Partnership Agreement for Conservation is Awesome

A partnership has been formed by the Ag Technology and Environmental Stewardship Foundation

(ATESF), Agren, Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA), Iowa Soybean Association (ISA), and the Iowa

Land Improvement Contractors Association (LICA). The purpose of the partnership is to implement a pri-

vate-sector initiative to demonstrate technology-based conservation practice planning as a tool to accelerate

implementation of Iowa’s Nutrient Reduction Strategy. This initiative, titled “Conservation is Awesome,” is

funded by a $114,000 grant from the Walton Family Foundation, and $80,000 from the Iowa Corn Promo-

tion Board for the software license to conservation planning tools. All partners agree to provide in-kind do-

nations which may include staff time, travel, materials, and/or equipment.

The partners have agreed to certain roles and responsibilities that were included in the grant application.

LICA’s responsibilities are explained below with timelines.

LICA: Promote the project to members so contractors participate.

Coordinate members to participate in webinar demonstration (December 2013).

Promote in-person training to participating contractors (December 2013 to January 2014).

Develop, implement, and analyze telephone interviews with participating contractors to measure

satisfaction with tools and willingness to pay (October 2014 and November 2015).

President’s Award Banquet on Tuesday.

Iowa LICA Website Navigation By Lori Keppler, LICA Technical Secretary

2013 has been a development year for our website. New things have been added and we have moved a few things around. Let’s take a look at

what exists in this online monster.

Above is the homepage for the Iowa LICA website. The top, right and left will stay the same regardless of which page you are

on in our website. The left side includes the state officers and staff. The top right side of the page allows you to search for some-

thing specific, shows you recent posts, gives you upcoming events that link to the calendar, frequent search requests, and the

archives you can search through. The top of the page gives you navigation tools to weave your way through the site. The middle

of the page will change depending on where you are. You will see the latest Iowa LICA posts in the middle of the homepage.

Along the top of the screen the navigation menu contains the following:

HOME

Now, let’s look at each of the menus at the top of our homepage. We’ll begin with “HOME.” This will bring you back to the

homepage no matter which page you find yourself on. I like to think of it as the reset button. If you don’t have any idea how you

got to where you are, but you want to go back, you can always click on “HOME.”

ABOUT US

“ABOUT US” is a page, but it also contains submenus. Click on this page you’ll find information about our members and what

we are committed to. By hovering your mouse over “ABOUT US” you’ll find additional choices to choose from.

Committees

Districts – This explains our districts and gives you the leadership for each district.

Newsletters – This page has newsletters back to 2011.

Officers & Staff – Here you’ll find photos of your state officers and the Iowa LICA staff.

LICA CALENDAR OF EVENTS

By clicking on this link you’ll be directed to the LICA calendar. If you hover over “LICA CALENDAR OF EVENTS” you’ll be

given additional choices which include:

State Convention – Information for the upcoming state convention including a registration form and schedule.

Field Days – Information for the Midwest Construction Expo & Field Day. You’ll also find a slideshow of photos from past

field days.

Day at the Capitol – You’ll find a slideshow of photos from Iowa LICA at the state Capitol.

OUR FARM

This page contains photos from our farm. You’ll be able to see progress we’ve made on not only the land but also the building.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERS

This is a newly added page this year. We created a map for our associate members. This map allows you to search or look for a

specific type of associate. They are color coded by: machinery sales, drainage machines, machinery repairs, insurance, contractor

supplies, drainage materials, and others. Once you find the vendor you are looking for you’ll find their address, phone, fax, and a

link to their website.

MEMBERSHIP

This is a page and menu. If you click on the page you’ll go to a page that has our membership application and a map of our mem-bers. This is created like the Associate map. It is color coded by district. You can search for a specific contractor. Once located,

you’ll be able to find their address, phone, fax, district, email, and a link to their website. This information is gathered on your

annual registration. If you find incorrect information, please make sure to submit correct information on your annual registration

form.

If you hover over the Membership link you’ll be given choices to find the application for membership and a page dedicated to the

benefits our association has to offer. This also includes the National LICA benefits.

BUY/SELL/TRADE

If you click on “BUY/SELL/TRADE” you will be taken to the form for you to add information to the website to buy, sell or trade.

If you have photos you would like to add to your listing, please email them to [email protected]. By hovering over “BUY/

SELL/TRADE” you will be shown the submenu to listed items.

LINKS

This page hosts important local, state, federal, and industry links for our members.

CONTACT US

This link will take you to our contact page. Here you’ll find our address, phone number, and a contact form to contact us.

cover all new updates on OSHA, MSHA, drug and alcohol, and CDL/DOT requirements.

There have been some major OSHA changes with hazard communication that will affect all

companies.

Myron Muehlbauer is the Technical Support Specialist for Ziegler Cat. This presentation

will be on some of the change to modern day machine hydraulic systems, with emphasis on the high

pressures involved, and also how minute system clearances have gotten to accommodate this. We

will illustrate how these small clearances have stressed the need for better maintenance practices,

proper machine warm up to avoid thermal shock, and escalated general safety considerations.

The last part will be a short introduction to the latest in hydraulics, the hybrid system used in the

Caterpillar 336E Hybrid Excavator. This system is very unique and efficient, and may be the

concept of the future.

figure the cost of operating a machine.

Drainage and Nutrient Reduction

Matt Helmers is an Associate Professor from Iowa State University. The Iowa Nutrient

Reduction Strategy has generated significant interest throughout Iowa. To reach the goals laid out

will require a combination of practices many of which will require LICA members for installation.

This presentation will highlight the opportunities for LICA members to be involved and lead efforts

in reducing nutrient movement to downstream water bodies.

Down on the Farm

I went to the farm a week ago to

make sure we were ready for winter.

All the water lines have been drained

and the equipment has been put

away for winter. Everything looks

pretty good. The seeding has come

up and everything is green.

You might not know that we have

four campers and a boat stored in the

building for winter. They belong to

some folks from Melbourne.

Also, want to thank members who

offered some antique equipment for

display at the farm. We will pursue

those offers next spring.

Contractor School at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo

Iowa LICA Chairman of the Board, Tim Recker, Iowa LICA Safety

Director, Linda Moyna, and several NE Iowa

contractors have been actively involved in the

development of a new Construction Equipment

Operator program at Hawkeye Community

College.

Students who participate in this program will be well prepared to

enter the workforce in the construction industry. Some of the

topics the advisory committee recommended are: intensive safety

training, general maintenance class, seat time on different

machines, class C CDL, along with social and communication

electives.

Hawkeye Community College intends to begin the program in

May of 2014. Moyna and Recker will continue to meet with the

advisory committee until the program is rolled out.

Northwest District goes High Tech!

We are all busy. It is hard to get to all the meetings and events we would like to attend. With the hope

of getting more member involvement in the operation of Iowa LICA, the Iowa LICA Northwest District

is going to hold its December district meeting via conference call. Will it work? We won’t know unless

we try. I want to make sure that members realize the call will not cost them anything. The call is billed

to Iowa LICA, not individual callers. If you haven’t ever been on a conference call, give it a try. Also,

have patience. We don’t know if we will have 10 people on the line or 50!

Conservation Award If you have a customer or technician you feel deserves recogni-tion for their efforts in conserving and protecting our soil and water, please contact the Iowa LICA office for a nomination form.
