Welcome! I would like to thank you for attending the IPrime 2016 Annual Meeting at the University of Minnesota. IPrime is the Industrial Partnership for Research in Interfacial and Materials Engineering, and is the largest industrial consortium in the University and one of the most successful in the country. It connects industrial companies to selected research programs in the College of Science and Engineering, to the NSF-supported Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC), the College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences, and the Academic Health Center. IPrime currently includes over 45 faculty and associated graduate students from 9 departments working in 7 research programs, with support from 41 member companies. The IPrime Annual Meeting is an ideal opportunity to network with other member companies, to learn about latest research results, and to meet with more than 150 dedicated young engineers and scientists. This year, IPrime researchers will be sharing their expertise in areas such as biotechnology, bio and pharmaceutical materials, electronic materials and devices, organic semi-conductors, polymers, and coatings. In addition there are five exciting workshops and a plenary lecture on the “Innovation Journey.” On the following pages you will find the schedules and abstracts for both the presentations and posters. You will also find the location of the meeting rooms and a map of the poster sessions. Complete information is available on our website, www.iprime.umn.edu. Following the Annual Meeting, many of the presentations and posters will be available on our website that you will be able to access with your company password. If you can’t find the presentation on the website, feel free to contact the presenter, identifying yourself as an IPrime member. We welcome your feedback through your company’s Technical Advisory Committee Representative(s) (TAC). Again, thank you for your membership in IPrime and for participating in the 2016 IPrime Annual Meeting. Sincerely,
Chris Macosko Director, IPRIME

Surface Treatment, Surface Patterning, and Coating Adhesion-1
Coating Process Fundamentals Program Satish Kumar, Coordinator
Coating quality is frequently dependent on the properties of the underlying substrate. Substrates are often treated in various ways to promote certain properties, such as coating adhesion. In other cases, the surface to be coated may be patterned, chemically/and or topographically, creating unique challenges for controlled liquid deposition. The purpose of this workshop is to highlight opportunities for fundamental research concerning surface treatment, surface patterning, and coating adhesion. Such opportunities may arise from long-standing problems as well as emerging areas. Contributions that discuss practical industrial challenges are especially welcome.

Advances in Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Materials for Flexible Electronics
Flexible Electronics and Photovoltaics Russell Holmes, Coordinator
Organic electronic materials possess a variety of attractive processing features over their conventional semiconductor counterparts. Despite these processing advantages, the resulting device performance can lag those based on conventional electronic materials. Interestingly, unique synergies and functionalities are often possible when materials and devices are designed that combine both organic and inorganic building blocks, often leading to favorable combinations of attractive processing and unique performance. Recently, this has been especially evident in the emergence of hybrid, organometal-halide perovskite photovoltaics and printable metal-oxide electronic circuitry. This workshop will examine recent advances and remaining challenges to the broad application of hybrid organic-inorganic electronic materials for application in solar energy conversion and flexible electronics.

"The Innovation Journey: You can't control it,
but you can learn to maneuver it."
Our Minnesota Innovation Research Program and other studies have found that a common set of issues are encountered while the innovation journey unfolds in the development of a wide variety of new technologies, products, programs, and services. These issues challenge the usefulness of: business plans and budgets, stage-gate development processes, administrative progress reviews, consensus leadership, trial-and-error learning, and the belief that managers or entrepreneurs can control the innovation journey. However, they can increase their odds of success by developing and practicing skills in learning, leading, relating, and cycling through the innovation journey.
