Welcome! I would like to thank you for attending the IPrime 2013 Annual Meeting at the University of Minnesota. IPrime is the Industrial Partnership for Research in Interfacial and Materials Engineering, and is the largest industrial consortium in the University. It connects industrial companies to selected research programs in the College of Science and Engineering, to the NSF-supported Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC), the College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences, and the Academic Health Center. IPrime currently includes over 54 faculty and associated graduate students from 10 departments working in 8 research programs, with support from a record 50+ member companies. The IPrime Annual Meeting is an ideal opportunity to network with other member companies, to learn about latest research results, and to meet with more than 150 dedicated young engineers and scientists. This year, IPrime researchers will be sharing exciting new discoveries in areas such as biotechnology, biomaterials and pharmaceutical materials, magnetic heterostructures, organic semi-conductors, polymers, coatings, and renewable energy materials. In addition there are six exciting workshops and special Characterization Facility demonstrations. Enclosed is the schedule for our 2013 Annual Meeting and maps of meeting room locations. Complete information, including abstracts, is available on our website, www.iprime.umn.edu. Following the Annual Meeting, many of the presentations and posters will be available on our website (access with your company password). We welcome your feedback through your company’s TAC, Technical Advisory Committee Representative(s). Again, thank you for your membership in IPrime and for participating in the 2013 IPrime Annual Meeting. Sincerely,

Chris Macosko Director, IPRIME

IPRIME WORKSHOP & DEMO ABSTRACTS

Protein Stability and Biocatalysis (BB) May 29, 1:15-5:00p, Coordinator: Ping Wang (Program Leader) Stability of biocatalysts is concerned for most industrial applications which challenge the catalysts with harsh environments that are very different from their biological origins. Engineering more stable protein structures and after-isolation fabrications are effective means in deriving stable enzymes for extended life and consistent performance. Most protein engineering strategies alter the equilibrium between folded and denatured forms by either stabilizing the folded form or destabilizing the unfolded form, while after-isolation stabilization emphasizes manipulation of the microenvironments surrounding enzyme molecules. This workshop will review limiting factors of protein stability and emerging technologies for highly stable biocatalysts.

Antimicrobial and Antifouling Surfaces and Materials (BPM)

May 29, 8:30-11:40a, Coordinator: Chun Wang Biomaterials surfaces are often plagued by adhesion of microbes such as bacteria, which can lead to serious and often times fatal infections. It remains a significant challenge to develop surface coatings for medical implants and devices that are resistant to bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation, or are toxic to bacterial cells without harming human cells. On the other hand, nonspecific protein adsorption onto biomaterial surfaces not only aggravates bacterial adhesion and colonization ("biofouling"), but it also may lead to poor biocompatibility in vivo and compromise normal functioning of medical devices. In this workshop academic and industry experts will introduce state-of-the-art approaches, materials, and surfaces with antimicrobial and antifouling properties. They will also discuss how these technologies can improve the performance and biocompatibility of implants and devices.

Perspectives on Coating Process Fundamentals 1 & 2 (CPF)

May 28, 1:30-5:20p & May 29, 8:30-11:40a, Coordinator: Satish Kumar (Program Co-Leader)

This workshop will be the 25th in the history the Coating Process Fundamentals Program. To commemorate this occasion, we are planning a special two-part workshop.

Tuesday afternoon will be a "working shop" where companies bring in short vignettes of interesting problems they have. This format has been used successfully in past workshops, & the problems that companies discuss often significantly influence CPFP research.

Wednesday morning will be devoted to talks providing a look backward and at what lies ahead regarding several key areas in coating processes fundamentals. Perspectives will be given on areas such as computation, solidification, visualization, and industrial-academic interactions.

IPRIME WORKSHOP & DEMO ABSTRACTS CONT’D

Carbon Polymer Nanocomposites 1 & 2 (MP) May 28, 1:30-5:20p & May 29, 8:30-11:40a, Coordinator: David Morse

The workshop will focus on composite materials containing carbon nanotubes and graphite or graphene sheets. Carbon polymer nanocomposites offer some unique advantages, but also pose unique challenges because of the difficulty of dispersing some of these materials. The workshop will discuss a variety of methods for dispersing and processing nanotube and graphene composites, structure characterization, and relationship of structure to final mechanical, transport, and electrical properties.

__________________________________________________________________

Self-Assembly, Colloids and Surfaces in Industry (NMP) May 28, 1:30-5:20p, Coordinators: Alon McCormick (Program Leader) and Joe Zasadzinski

We have invited panelists who are select alumni and allies of the program (former graduate students, postdocs and industrial fellows) currently in industry to provide overviews of self-assembly, surface, colloid and nanostructure issues important to their professional practice. This collection of short overview talks will provide technical insights, vistas and challenges, and also some retrospection on the transitions from academia to the industrial research and development environment. __________________________________________________________________

Materials, Architectures & Processes for Organic Light-Emitting Devices (OEI) May 29, 8:30-11:40a, Coordinator: Russ Holmes

Organic semiconductors continue to receive significant attention for application in next generation electronic and optoelectronic devices. These materials are attractive for their high performance and compatibility with large-area, high-throughput processing techniques. While organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) are the most mature technology based on organic semiconductors, there remain significant fundamental and technological challenges that need to be addressed before these materials can truly realize broad application in displays and solid-state lighting. This workshop will discuss key challenges related to materials and device design and performance, and also address the characterization and processing techniques relevant to this area. __________________________________________________________________

Characterization Facility Demos on Coatings and Polymer Nanocomposites May 29, 7:00-8:30p, Coordinator: Greg Haugstad

Demonstrations will include cross-sectional SEM, nanomechanically sensitive AFM, and confocal Raman microscopy, applied to polymeric-nanocomposite coatings where the disperse inclusions are nanoscale organic particulates (e.g., drug), inorganic nanoparticles (e.g., silica), or nanoscale domains of phase-segregated polymers.

INDUSTRIAL FELLOWS PROGRAM

The goal of the Industrial Fellows Program is to bring industrial and university

scientists and engineers together in collaborative interaction for an extended

period. This program structure provides the opportunity to formulate and

implement long-term, non-proprietary research projects of mutual interest and

encourages the exchange of new insights, ideas, and knowledge. Companies with

IPrime Sponsor-level membership may send one Fellow per year as part of their

membership fees. Affiliate-level companies may send Fellows for an additional

fee.

While in residence at the University, a designated employee works closely with

IPrime researchers on an open, pre-defined research project of mutual interest. To

encourage Industrial Fellows and IPrime faculty to have a true interactive research

experience, the program allows for a flexible schedule, and the residency period

ranges from 10 days to one year. However, to ensure meaningful collaboration, the

10 days should be scheduled within a year.

HOW TO BECOME AN INDUSTRIAL FELLOW The prospective fellow works with the IPrime faculty member who will be directly

associated with the project to develop a one- to two-page proposal describing the

nature of the research and the estimated amount of time to be spent in residence.

The fellow, faculty member and appropriate IPrime Program Leader sign this

proposal and forward it to the Partnership Director for final approval. For further

information contact Bob Lewis, [email protected], ph: 612-625-1269.
