Welcome! I would like to thank you for attending the IPRIME 2017 Annual Meeting at the University of Minnesota.

IPRIME is the Industrial Partnership for Research in Interfacial and Materials Engineering, and is the largest industrial consortium in the University and one of the most successful in the country. It connects industrial companies to selected research programs in the College of Science and Engineering, to the NSF-supported Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC), the College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource Sciences, and the Academic Health Center. IPRIME currently includes 48 faculty and their associated graduate students from 9 departments working in 7 research programs, with support from 39 member companies.

The IPRIME Annual Meeting is an ideal opportunity to network with other member companies, to learn about latest research results, and to meet with more than 150 dedicated young engineers and scientists. This year, IPRIME researchers will be sharing their expertise in areas such as biotechnology, bio and pharmaceutical materials, electronic materials and devices, organic semi-conductors, polymers, and coatings. In addition there are 7 exciting workshops and a plenary lecture on the “Imagine Heart Valves that Grow and Don't Wear Out.”

On the following pages you will find the schedules and abstracts for both the presentations and posters. You will also find the location of the meeting rooms and a map of the poster sessions. Complete information is available on our website, www.iprime.umn.edu. Following the Annual Meeting, many of the presentations and posters will be available on our website that you will be able to access with your company password. If you can’t find the presentation on the website, feel free to contact the presenter, identifying yourself as an IPRIME member.

We welcome your feedback through your company’s Technical Advisory Committee Representative(s) (TAC). Again, thank you for your membership in IPRIME and for participating in the 2017 IPRIME Annual Meeting.

Sincerely,

Chris Macosko Director, IPRIME

Characterizations of Coatings: Needs and Opportunities-1

Coating Process Fundamentals Program Satish Kumar, Coordinator

Characterization of coatings is essential to determining and maintaining coating quality. This includes characterization of the coating in both its liquid state (e.g., rheology, wetting, flatness) and solid state (e.g., stress, microstructure, adhesion, roughness). Many advances in this area have been made over the past decade, but many needs remain. The purpose of this workshop is to highlight industrial needs for characterization of coatings along with associated opportunities for fundamental research. Such opportunities may arise from long-standing problems as well as emerging areas. Contributions that discuss practical industrial challenges and needs are especially welcome.

Natural, Synthetic and Hybrid Biopolymers as Biomaterials Biomaterials and Pharmaceutical Materials

Ron Siegel, Program Leader

While the vast majority of implanted polymeric materials are based on synthetic polymers, there is a growing literature in which biopolymers such as proteins, polyamino acids, and polysaccharides as implantable materials are being investigated as alternatives. These biopolymers can be implanted alone or as hybrids with synthetic materials. The biopolymers may enhance bioavailability, and can also exhibit superior mechanical properties. This workshop will feature advances in the use of proteins based on silk and elastin, crosslinked glycosaminoglycan hydrogels, and adhesive proteins, as implantable biomaterials.

"Imagine Heart Valves that Grow and Don't Wear Out"

We have developed a novel tissue-engineered tube of cell-produced collagenous matrix, which is allogeneic upon a decellularization performed prior to implantation and thus “off-the-shelf.” It is grown from dermal fibroblasts entrapped in a sacrificial fibrin hydrogel tube that is then decellularized using sequential detergent treatments. The resulting cell-produced matrix tube possesses physiological strength, compliance, and alignment (circumferential). Using the concept of a tubular heart valve, where the tube collapses inward with back-pressure between 3 equi-spaced constraints placed around the periphery to create one-way valve action, we have created a set of novel heart valves for adults and children that offer indefinite durability and growth potential because the matrix becomes a living tissue with the recipient’s cells post-implantation.
