The star of the long-running reality show ‘Bondi Vet’, Brown also fills in often on ‘The Project’, and has a seat on the popular lifestyle show ‘The Living Room’. Plus there’s also the time spent running a busy vet clinic in Sydney. Its all in a day’s work for the 34 year old from New South Wales.

The current series of Bondi Vet, the fifth, is a thirty episode series, something that is a rarity in today’s cutthroat world of TV, and its something not lost on the man often referred to as ‘Chesty Bond’.

“To be honest when we started ‘Bondi Vet’ in 2009 I didn’t think the show would get to a fifth week never mind a fifth season, and that’s just the nature of television,” Chris said from his Bondi Junction surgery. “We were happy with what we did originally and its just the great unknown…you don’t know how people are going to take to it.

“The comments I got initially were that people didn’t think it was what they were expecting, nobody expected it to show how crazy and bizarre the life of a vet can be. This new series has a 30 episode run, and that’s a lot of footage. It’s been a busy twelve months, and all a bit of a blur, especially with me doing

‘The Living Room’ too.“I don’t know how I do it, I just work I guess.

To do two shows at the same time and still get into the vet clinic is really tricky. I rarely get days off and when I do there’s always work to do. I haven’t had a holiday in over 19 months, and I just never seem to make it happen.”

So does Chris have an idea what it is that has made the show such a favourite with viewers?

“I think it has a lot to do with the fact that Aussies are animal lovers. At its core, people are intrigued with the relationship people have with their pets. It’s always been at the heart of what we do, we want the viewer to invest in the story and cross their fingers that they (the pets) are going to be ok. A big thing about the show is the honesty, if I don’t know what’s going on I’ll say that on screen, and it brings a raw honesty with also a sense of fun. It’s not designed to be draining, you don’t want to hold a box of tissues all the time, but you want that sense of fun to come through.

“Most of the time I leave it to the producers to choose the footage for the show, but I have a good relationships with them, we’ve been doing this for a long time now, and i know that if I put forward a good argument they’ll

listen. “By the same token we won’t hold back if

there is a story that doesn’t work out. That’s real life, and if we only show happy endings then the show becomes a bit predictable.

“For sure it teaches kids about life and death. As a kid my boxer died when I was five and I remember every single about that day. It’s the gentlest way possible for kids to understand the meaning of life and death.”

Chris is often asked what his favourite animal was that he worked on through the life of the show, and surprisingly, it’s a two legged dog.

“People ask me all the time what’s the most amazing animal I’ve ever worked on… and keep in mind I’ve worked on tigers, rhinos, lions and all sorts, but the answer I always give is a dog. It’s a two legged dog called Faith in Indianapolis, born with only her back legs but walks like a person.

“I’ve kept in contact with the owners and they’ve become close friends of mine. They told me that Faith was reaching the end of her working life, she does a lot of charity work, and we went over there to film her last week on the job for this season, and to catch up

with the family.”Working on so many different animals, it must

be hard to learn the ins and outs of all kinds, but Chris says that most species fall into one of ten groups, as he explains.

“The best way I can explain this is that there might be thousands of animals, but there are only about ten models. There are thousands of fish say, but they share the same organs. I know the basics of elephants, but in terms of the way their bodies work and function, it’s the same as a cow except one has a trunk and one doesn’t. It’s a very simplified way of looking at it, but it does work. If you looked at a giraffe as a horse with a long neck, it goes a long way to solving the problem when you work on that giraffe.

“Keeping up with research is the hardest challenge, the animal world is like the human medical world, there are always new ways of treating things and you need to be up to speed with all of that.”

So far there is one animal that Chris has yet to work on, and he’s working towards making it a reality.

“My dream animal to work on is a polar bear, I find them fascinating. They intrigue me and I was hearing someone talk the other day about them who told me that if you can see a polar bear with the naked eye, its too late, you’re dead. That’s just an incredible thing. Hopefully I’m working on some projects that might get me in the company of a polar bear soon.

“I’m actually off to Kenya next week and I have to figure out how I’m going to catch a zebra. Africa is a magical place. You don’t realise till you

are there how extra ordinary it is. It’s a dream world for a vet, all those amazing animals.

“The strangest feeling is that all around you are these creatures that want to eat you...it’s a really confronting feeling as a human being.”

Monitor your alignment.The use of shafts or alignment sticks is a

very easy and effective way to assist with aim during practice. Constantly checking your alignment will ensure that you are seeing the actual ball flight relative to the target, and allow you to properly assess the areas of your technique that needs improvement.Change up the target and ball flight.

Do you hit lots of balls at the same target for extending periods of time when you practice? This repetitive type of practice doesn’t produce the variety and diversity that is needed when you play on the golf course. Instead, try changing the target, club and ball flight frequently. This will give you adequate time between shots to practice your routine and thought processes much like you would on the golf course. This process will also allow you to maintain much higher concentration levels and achieve far better results. Change your practice habits today and start developing stronger and more effective practice routines.Suggestions:

Try using one ball to 10 different targets instead of 10 balls to the same target.

During putting practice, only use one ball and set a goal for your practice. E.g. Playing each hole 1 at a time and finish the course without a three put, if you do not achieve your goal repeat the process until successful. This is a great way to put your putting practice under pressure.

Its become quite a tradition at Westside Christian College to help out those less fortunate in our community, and this year’s ‘Can Drive’ resulted in a record 1,700 cans being donated by school students, staff and families to help the needy.

The appeal is in its fifth year at the school, and working with the “Helping Hands” charity, the school has to date collected nearly nine thousand cans of food over the years, which equates to over three and a half tonnes.

The Helping Hands vans travel around Ipswich every Tuesday night, and the food is given to those who need it most. Students often join the vans, and it is common to see the experience having a profound effect on the students.

Helping Hands co-ordinator and school staff member Richard Condon says the appeal gets bigger every year at the Goodna school, and while donations grow, so the number of people turning to the vans for help as the cost of living gets out of reach for many people in the community.

“I had one student who donated all his 17th birthday money to buy cans, and he bought hundreds. The kids have really embraced it, but what’s best about working with Helping Hands is that when the kids come with me and see it go into the hands of people, they see for themselves what a difference it makes.

“This is our fourth year of working with

Helping Hands, and the junior school makes sandwiches to give out every Tuesday. We have local bakeries and fruit stores who donate food to the vans, and they are chockers each week.

“The number of people who come for help is increasing, and they now know that we will be there every week no matter what. I’ve seen families with young kids come and get food who normally wouldn’t be asking for help.

Many of these people are in that situation through unemployment or disability, and most times they just don’t know how to access services.”

Westside’s Secondary Chaplain Sheralyn Anderson said that she’s seen the school students get right behind the appeal.

“Some of these problems are way too big for one person to handle but when we get together as a school we can all help make a difference. I’ve seen some kids bring in up to forty and fifty cans.

“I met a family one night who lost their home in the floods, and their world has been turned upside down. Its not shame or embarrassment, but that sense of their wounded pride asking for food. I can’t imagine how humbling that must be for people.”

St Augustine’s College in Augustine Heights recently celebrated its ten year anniversary with a range of events at the school that embraced all students and staff over the last decade.

When the sod was turned on the school to signify construction in 2003, the land was surrounded by nothing but bushland. Today, the school is now surrounded by hundreds of houses, with a new shopping centre just next door…a far cry from the bushland of ten years ago.

‘StAC Week’ is an annual event held during the last week of August to celebrate St Monica’s Feast Day (St Monica is St Augustine’s Mother) and St Augustine’s Feast Day Apart from the annual ‘reading rug’ and picnic lunch, and to celebrate 10 years, they also held during the celebrations buddy activities, cocktail functions, and a special assembly featuring many ex-students and staff who returned to join the celebrations.

There was also a photo booth session so students can create their own memories, pavement art and a special mass. Brookwater Golf Club also hosted a special cocktail function for all current and past staff. A time capsule that was buried many years ago by the school was retrieved with papers and items from the

time. It took many digs and several phone calls to the original people responsible to locate the exact site of the capsule, but it was found eventually.

Archbishop Mark Coleridge also visited the school to preside over the special mass on August 31 for a special celebratory mass. Following the mass, Fr Peter Wieneke blessed the new ‘Value Pillars’ and a celebratory stone to signify the school’s ten years.

The piece of art was commissioned as a special project to celebrate 10 years of St Augustine’s College and are to be a lasting legacy and reminder of the values that are at the heart of the school and in the minds of the staff and students.

Ireland’s hardest working comic returning to Australia

Normally when Byrne tours Australia, its not unusual for him to play sixty of seventy shows, such is the demand. Last year he spent over a month in Melbourne alone at just one venue.

Byrne has been very busy since he was last in Queensland at the 2012 Brisbane Comedy Festival which featured the Australian Skipping Team in a finale that had audiences mesmerized. Byrne has been busy turning his popular radio sitcom ‘Father Figure’ into a BBC comedy series which he hopes will win over as many fans as the original radio series which aired in the UK. Ipswich Life asked him how he gets time to squeeze all the touring and TV stuff in.

“Well this is a smaller tour than I normally do, and it isn’t a case of not wanting to do a massive tour, but it’s the opposite…I should be doing hundreds of gigs. It’s all a question of time.

“I’ve done this sitcom for the BBC, and just finished that a few weeks ago. That’s been solid work for months, and I just didn’t have the free time to do another massive tour of Australia.

“It was funny, all the actors in the TV show don’t do stand up, and they all said at the end of filming that can’t wait to sit around for a bit and do nothing. They said ‘so Jason, what are you going to do’, and I said ‘I’ve got to do

shows all next week’, and they are like ‘what’?”Many of the UK’s best TV comedy shows

began life on radio. Even shows like Little Britain. So how did Byrne find it writing a show for radio and then converting it to TV?

“It’s a lot easier to convert radio to TV than it is the other way round. Radio shows are so heavy in dialogue that when you write for radio, you have to tell the listener everything with words, but with TV you dont have to worry about that. With me being such a visual and physical comedian I can express myself more.”

If you’ve ever been to a Jason Byrne show, you’ll see how he manipulates members of the audience in the show. It’s something that most comics steer away from, but Jason has embraced it and got better over time.

“My audience participation totally evolved. When i started I used a few props and I’d just think ‘what am i going to do?’..I had some props and saw this guy in the crowd, I got him to act out his job or something, and the audience loved it. It was something that nobody was doing. It was stand up with participation from the audience on a higher level, and over the years its just grown.

“It hasn’t always worked, I had a drunk guy once who was really funny in the crowd, but when I got him on stage it was an absolute

disaster. He just stood there and said ‘Woombuffgarrrhurraggg” I had to literally hold him up and I’m doing this while I’m doing the stunt with one hand. Just awful.”

So the burning question is there a stunt that Jason throught was too risky?

“There was one. I was trying to do this thing when I was connected to a wire and I wanted to run out into the crowd and keep going. The venues went mad. They said if I cut someone in the head we’ll kill YOU. By the time we looked into all the things we had to do to meet OHS I decided to go back to wooden sticks and bits of curtain.

“Often I find the simpler the set up the funnier it is. But there’s something about the Irish and the Australians, we share the same sense of humour…I suppose its because we both hate the English. The Irish and the Aussies were both treated the same way by them throughout history, and its still going on, like with the Ashes.

“People often ask me where is the hardest place to do a show and I always say Ireland and Australia, because everyone in those two countries is so funny. There is no shortage of people and great stories.”

The success of the ‘Antiques Roadshow’ television series points to a great interest in people finding out just what their family heirlooms are worth on the open market, and ‘Treasures from the Attic’ aims to seek out Ipswich’s hidden treasures and have them valued by expert valuers.Arts, Community and Cultural Services

Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said ‘Treasures from the Attic’ was returning to the Gallery after a four-year break and would give members of the public the opportunity to have their items appraised by experts.

“There’s no questioning the priceless sentimental value of family objects passed down through generations and this event aims to help residents uncover the financial value of their items as well.

“The panel of valuers coming together for ‘Treasures from the Attic’ have decades of experience between them and will be able to let people know if they’re sitting on hidden treasure,” Cr Pisasale said.

Yande Meannjin Antiques owner Stan Prickett is one of four valuers participating in this month’s event and said items made after the Second World War were in popular demand.

“Today people mostly want post-war items such as Murano glass, silverware as well as single cups, saucers and plates of quality,” Mr Prickett said.

“They want items that will make a statement in the home rather than

having a collection that might accumulate dust,” Mr Prickett said.

Valuer, and owner of Southside Antiques Centre, Rhonda McGuigan will also be participating in the event and said items used for High Tea events were also back in vogue.

“For a few years, I’d been collecting the three-tiered cake plates and I thought ‘I’m not buying these anymore, they’re sitting gathering dust’ and then all of a sudden, the High Teas came back into flavour and all our three tiered cake plates went!” Mrs McGuigan said.

Stan Prickett has worked in the antiques industry for 30 years and said he was looking forward to participating in his first ‘Treasures from the Attic’ on September 21.

“Ipswich is an old established city. Think back to the industries that were here such as the woollen mills and the timber industries.

“There is a wealth of history here, wealthy families, and they would have all been able to afford good quality items,” Mr Prickett said.

Residents are encouraged to bring items such as paintings, ceramics, glassware, china, jewellery and other collectibles for valuation

whilst larger items, such as furniture, can be appraised by photograph.

Mrs McGuigan said her long-lasting memory from previous ‘Treasures from the Attic’ events was the number of people wanting to have items valued.

“The first time we did “Treasures from the Attic’, I arrived and walked past a lot of people with parcels and bags and I thought ‘something’s going on up this end of town’.

“As I came closer to the Gallery doorway, I knew what was going on. There would have been a couple of hundred people.

“We were supposed to finish at half past one and we were still going at 3 o’clock!” Mrs McGuigan said.

Entry to ‘Treasures from the Attic’ is by gold coin donation and a limit of three items per person will apply. Items will be valued on a ‘first in, first served’ basis.

‘Treasures from the Attic’ will be held at the Ipswich Art Gallery 10am – 1pm on Saturday September 21. Grandchester, formerly ‘Bigge’s Camp’Grandchester was originally known as Bigge’s Camp, so named for pioneer pastoralist Frederick Bigge, who was the older brother of Francis Bigge, a Cleveland pioneer. Frederick Bigge had camped by the lagoon situated there on his way north to Brisbane Station, in 1842. Frederick Bigge was later to become a prominent member of the community, serving as a member of parliament.

The first settlers in the area were Thomas and Maria Mort, who took up the Franklynvale run in 1849.

Bigge’s Camp, later Grandchester, has always been a stopping point for travellers looking for a place to rest, including Alan Cunningham who is said to have camped here in June 1829. When the railway line was opened, the new name of Grandchester was chosen and over time, Grandchester was to become the centre of the district. The locality known as Lady Bowen Hill is said to have been the place where the official function was held in July 1865, to celebrate the opening of the

railway. The actual railway station was also constructed in 1865 and is the oldest in Queensland. The name Bigge’s Camp is still displayed at the station, forming a link with the area’s early history.

This photograph, dating from 1867, shows Bigge’s Camp or Granchester as it was starting to be called, only some two years after the opening of the line. At the time, the buildings were still in a rudimentary state, but the settlement was starting to grow under the positive influence of the new railway line.

But then things start to go awry: you have a week filled with work functions, you plateau, or you injure yourself and can’t exercise.

Suddenly you’ve gone from being an enthusiastic, inspired go-getter into a demoralized, indifferent mess. Things are going to go wrong — it’s inevitable. But it’s much easier to get through those tough times if you build up your motivational toolkit before you actually need to open it up and dip inside.

Consider what has motivated you to achieve other things in your life. What strategies did you use? How could you apply similar strategies to your weight loss?

Just days after the announcement that the Brisbane Lions are moving to Springfield, came the announcement of a new purpose-built head office for GE to be built in Springfield at a cost of $72 million.

The purpose-built 14,000 square metre office building will cater for 1200 people and aims to achieve a 5-star Green Star rating. The site, which will have access to restaurants, cafes, crèches and a gymnasium as well as other shopping, services facilities and extensive parklands, which is under construction.

GE will base its Queensland Headquarters at the site, housing the majority of its Queensland office-based employees there from early 2015, along with other tenants.

Steve Sargent, President and CEO, GE Australia and New Zealand, said GE’s decision to move its headquarters to Greater Springfield was a significant investment in the company’s Queensland operations and formed part of its broader commitment to Greater Springfield as a key technology partner for the emerging city.

“We have been working alongside Springfield Land Corporation since 2009 and we share their vision of Greater Springfield as a sustainable city of the future. I’m confident that this new office location will offer our employees a modern, healthy and productive working environment.

“Our new purpose-built, energy-efficient site will provide our employees with a huge variety of choice for eating and shopping, as well as easy access to essential services such as banks and chemists.

“Greater Springfield will not only be the site of our new Queensland headquarters, but will showcase some of our world-class technologies in distributed energy and water infrastructure. We also look forward to working with Springfield Land Corporation and its partners in developing a leading-edge, integrated health ecosystem for all Greater Springfield residents,” Mr Sargent said.

Springfield founder Maha Sinnathamby said the growing community was in great shape to reap the many benefits of becoming a world-class city.

Premier Campbell Newman joined Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale and local politicians at the official announcement, where the traditional ‘sod turning’ was held to signify construction getting under way.

GE’s new office will be within eye view of Greater Springfield’s $253 million Polaris Data Centre, considered one of the biggest and most advanced ‘clouds’ in Australia.

Recently I baked a celebration cake and it was from in the garden that I drew my inspiration Vanilla Cake with Crystallised FlowersCake185g softened butter1 teaspoon of vanilla essence1 1/4 cups caster sugar 3 eggs 1/3 cup milk 1 ½ cups self-raising flour 1/3 cup cornflourIcing1 cup icing sugar, sifted2 tablespoons butter, softened1 teaspoon vanilla essence1 teaspoon waterCrystallised Flowers1 egg white1 teaspoon waterEdible flowers, pesticide freeCaster Sugar

Preheat your oven to 180c and prepare a 23cm round baking tin by lining it. Add all ingredients into a mixing bowl and combine with a spoon. Take your electric mixer and on a medium speed beat for approximately 3 minutes or until it’s fluffy and the mixture’s light in colour.Pour into you baking tin and place in the oven for 35 minutes. Remove from the oven and let it stand for five minutes, and then turn out onto your wire baking tray. Make sure it is completely cooled before icing. IcingTake your softened butter and whip until silky.Add the butter along with the sifted icing sugar and vanilla essence into a bowl and mix. Add your teaspoon of water and combine and you should have a creamy vanilla icing.Crystallised FlowersWhisk your egg white and water together. Then very carefully handle your edible flower to minimize bruising, and take a small brush and gently brush the egg white mixture over the petals. Sprinkle over sugar and place on a lined baking tray.You can prepare these the day before which I recommend for special occasions including weddings and let them stand at room temperature until use.

That’s entertainmentAfter months and months AND MONTHS of speculation, the casting for 50 Shades of Grey has finally been announced. And you’d be forgiven for not knowing these names straight away, because it looks like, in a similar fashion to the Twilight Saga did, they’ve cast actors with a currently low profile. I’m sure that’s about to change for Charlie Hunnam (below) whose been cast as Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as Anastacia Steele. Hunnam’s recent film credits include Pacific Rim and television series Sons of Anarchy; Johnson has had roles in 21 Jump Street, The Five Year Engagement and is the daughter of actors Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson.

Former Captain Kirk William Shatner is releasing another album of his bizarre musical stylings. In true Shatner style it’s not quite singing, not quite talking, doesn’t really flow, and yet is strangely interesting. His new project Ponder The Mystery is out in October and he described it as: “quite possibly the most creative thing I have ever done”.

Australian singer Sia (Titanium; Clap Your Hands) has been collaborating with Glee actress Lea Michelle (Rachel Berry) for Lea’s upcoming solo album. Michelle is working with a handful of writers on the project (which has yet to receive a release date) but tweeted: “Spent the day hanging and working with the amazing Sia… Such an incredible woman… So inspired.”

It’s been a few years since Lily Allen (It’s Not Fair; Smile) announced a retirement from music, but now it appears she’s ready for a comeback. After lending her vocals to the Pink song True Love under the moniker Lily Rose Cooper, Allen (below) has changed her twitter name back to Lily Allen and tweeted: “Hello, I’m Lily Allen, and I’m coming back, b**ches.”

Producer Timbaland is working on a top secret new project involving a back catalogue of lost works from the late Michael Jackson. It’s all very hush-hush at the moment and the only detail he’s revealed is that one of the tracks is called Chicago.

Fans of the star of Harry Potter went into overdrive recently at the Venice Film Festival. Hoards of screaming fans stampeded across the barricades once Daniel Radcliffe (below) hit the red carpet for the premiere of his upcoming film Kill Your Darlings. Luckily for the 24-year-old, bodyguards and police came to his rescue to ensure his safety as he walked into the film’s premiere. He admitted during the press conference that he takes all the attention in stride. “Thankfully, it’s not always like this,” he said as the crowds of people outside caused the windows to rattle in the building. ”I’ve been dealing with it in various ways since I was 11. I don’t take it seriously, actually I think it’s funny,” he explained.

And in case it’s possible you missed it.. Ben Affleck IS Batman. Or at least the next one — in an upcoming Batman Vs Superman style flick, that is based in the same Superman universe as the recent Man of Steel adaptation. Affleck (below) has played a superhero before in the flick Daredevil, and most recently won the Best Picture Oscar for his film Argo.

During the First World War, almost 1,000 British, French and Commonwealth troops, some as young were 16, were executed for desertion or cowardice. Over 3,300 Australian soldiers were court martialed for desertion, although estimates suggest ten times this number were ‘adrift’ at any given time.

‘The Accidental Soldier’ is the story of Harry Lambert, played by Dan Speilman, a shy and gentle baker from a rural town. With the forces desperate for new men, Harry signs up to do what he can, but after finding himself on the Western Front in France, amongst men who are unfit for fighting, but Harry is shocked. He walks from the battlefield and tries to avoid capture, and subsequent punishment.

Based on the book ‘Silent Parts’ by John Charalambous, it’s a look at a story that

remains mostly untold, and it’s the tale of deserters that attracted Dan to the role when he spoke to Ipswich Life about the movie.

“I think that’s what attracted me to the role, the fact that it’s a story that isn’t told too often,” Dan said. “If I can speak so broadly, I think we have a mythology in this country of our history in world conflict and we want to protect that as we believe so fiercely in it. This story is not about being heroic, or glorious, and towing the party line. It’s about fear, and humanity feeling humiliated by the senseless killing at that time.

“Right from when Gallipoli was being reported there was a tendancy for people at home to want to read about things in a glorious, good light. This story goes against that grain, and shows a side of war that hasn’t been told before.

“When I got the role I did some research and I looked into the Australian presence in Europe, and the figures of desertion, plus the recruitment drive and how propaganda worked… it was fascinating.

“Here was an older guy to start with, a baker, and was he drawn into the war. Harry Lambert was certainly not a soldier. I looked at propaganda from all over the world, and also at the battles in France, particularly Verdun.”

The Battle of Verdun was a nine month battle that took over 300,000 lives in February to

December of 1916. “This was a brutal battle that is referred to in

our story, and was the most horrific situation, where hundreds of thousands of soldiers were sent into a small area and it turned out to be like a meat grinder.”

Directed by Rachel Ward, and also featuring her husband Bryan Brown, it’s a small but experienced cast in the telemovie, including French actress Marie Bunel and Julia Zemiro, who only talk French. Does this make it harder to learn your lines when someone is talking another language?

“When someones talking in another dialect, no, it’s not really harder to learn your lines as we have the script in English and French. The character doesn’t understand what others are saying, so I can react as normal in those scenes, but having to learn French was tricky. That was challenging as an actor, doing scenes in French, I understood what I was saying, but its really strange and exciting to do that.”

Next year will be the 100th Anniversary of the start of the First World War, and its possible the movie will get attention overseas.

In once scene, Dan strips off and jumps into a dam. “Stripping off and jumping into a river in front of fifty people is really awkward. We did it after lunch when the sun was out luckily, but the owner of the property told me just before I did that scene that there was a turtle in the

dam that liked to bite you on the wotsit.“We filmed it just outside Perth, and you’d

never know it wasn’t France when you see the movie. There are economies we had to take in the story, due to the nature of Australian TV. We didn’t have the budget for big battle scenes, but I was convinced when I saw it that it was France, they did an amazing job.

“There’s a scene when the character looks out the window and can see artillery fire in the distance, which brings it homejust how close everything was to the people at that time.”

RM Williams boots have been a part of country life for generations and will now be worn by Australian soldiers on parade and when on ceremonial duties.

The Department of Defence has assigned a contract to the bootmaker RM Williams to supply 15,000 pairs of black Craftsman boots each year for the next three years.

Chief of Army, Lieutenant General David Morrison said the Army is proud to be partnering with the Australian brand.

 “With the Australian Army’s 112 year history, it is fitting that we will now also carry over 80 years of Australian tradition in our boots,”

Lieutenant General Morrison said. “Over the next three years Army will replace

the lace-up style patent leather boot with the new parade boot which is a fully stitched, elastic-sided boot with a grain leather design.”

The boots will be made at the RM Williams facility at Salisbury north of Adelaide.

Under the agreement, the company will visit Army units across Australia to conduct individual fittings for soldiers.

The contract follows a trial by members of Australia’s Federation Guard, who have regularly worn the new parade boot for ceremonial duties.

Members of the RAAF’s No 33 Squadron took time out from a busy operational schedule recently to show family and friends around the squadron and the KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft, the newest aircraft type in the Air Force inventory. The squadron played a major part in the recent Talisman Saber exercise refuelling RAAF Super Hornet fighters.

There’s no need to rush to apply, as the ballot is open for three months, closing on 31 January 2014.

The Anzac Commemorative Site at Gallipoli can safely, securely and comfortably accommodate 10,500 people. In 2015, this will comprise places for 8,000 Australians, 2,000 New Zealanders and up to 500 official representatives of the countries that served in the Gallipoli campaign.

Some of the places available to Australians will be reserved for special representatives including: direct descendants of Gallipoli veterans, widows of Australian First World War veterans, veterans of other conflicts, Australian secondary school students and their chaperones.

Widows of First World War veterans do not need to apply for the ballot and will be contacted separately by DVA regarding their interest in attending. Places for secondary school students and their chaperones will be allocated outside the ballot by State and Territory Governments.The remaining places (3,000 double passes) will be open for all Australians to apply.

Advice will be provided to individuals on the ballot outcome in March 2014, to ensure those successful have enough time to organise and pay for their trip. 

Those who have already booked a tour to Gallipoli in 2015, which includes attending official Anzac Day commemorative services, should speak to their travel agent or tour operator regarding arrangements if they are not successful in the ballot. Tour operators are not in a position where they can guarantee a place at the commemorations.

Many mortgage holders are not responding to the very low official interest rate.

With rates now at 2.50 per cent and the challenge for mortgage holders is ensuring they get the best out of this scenario, because it won’t last forever.

The starting point for any reviews on finance should always be information: ensuring you have accurate information, that the information is current, and that you understand it well enough to compare apples with apples. Yellow Brick Road has just completed a survey of mortgage attitudes and the results were an eye-opener.

The first number that grabbed my attention was the 62 per cent of respondents who had not even looked at how their home loan compared to others in the past 12 months. And 35 per cent had not considered refinancing to get a better mortgage deal. The RBA’s cash

rate has dropped by 2.25 percentage points in

the past two years, to historically low levels.

That so many mortgage borrowers are not even

investigating how they could get a better deal is

quite extraordinary.There was a strong streak of inertia

portrayed in this survey. For instance, 56 per cent of respondents said they had a home loan from one of the major four banks, yet 66 per cent of respondents surveyed believed a competitive home loan rate is 4.9 per cent or less, but none of the major four banks advertise a variable rate in the sub-4.9 per cent range.

The discrepancy is jarring and it says something about attitude versus behaviour.

There was also a large number who didn’t really know what a good deal looked like, such as the 27 per cent who said they believed a competitive mortgage rate would be 5.0 – 5.4 per cent.

A person who believes a good mortgage deal is over 5 per cent could be paying way too much — and that’s money that could be used or invested elsewhere.

By way of example, the savings on a rate of 5 per cent compared to 5.25 per cent on an average 30 year, $350,000 loan would be approximately $20,000. Australia’s current low rates are a bonus for those who are motivated. But it starts with you knowing the market. And a low interest rate environment is no time to be complacent. Holden fans can now take on the world’s ultimate race track with Holden’s own app based game, ‘World Record Ute’. Players have the chance to set their own record in the VF SS-V Redline Ute, pitting their skills against Holden’s own world record driver, Rob Trubiani.

Free on iOS and Android, the game features four challenging stages as players race against Rob’s ghost car, which demonstrates the best lines through the course. Bragging rights are up for grabs with the top 200 times for each stage posted on the global leader board.

Carlton star and AFL legend Chris Judd recently put up his Hyundai vehicle to the highest bidder all in the nam e of charity.

Judd’s Hyundai i40 was listed on ebay and successful bidder Warragul Grandmother of 16, and lifelong Carlton supporter, Gillian Archer won the vehicle with a bid of $31,001 which will go to The Steven Walter Childrens’ Cancer Foundation.

Hyundai also chipped in with an additional $15,000 for the 9 gols Carlton kicked against Essendon on August 24th, making a total of $46,001.

The eBay auction page was viewed by 11,000 users, with 45 people trying to outbid each other for right to own Juddy’s Hyundai i40. With the auction ending during the blockbuster Carlton vs. Essendon match, eBay bids spiked during the first quarter with Gillian eventually coming out on top.

“We had a look at the i40 and were very impressed. My children and I are big Carlton supporters so this persuaded us, and what a wonderful way to be able to support a charity and make someone else happy,” said Gillian Archer, the winner bidder. “My daughter has a Hyundai ix35 and loves it, and her twin girls also own Hyundai’s so we knew it was the right purchase.”

All the funds donated by Hyundai will go to a very important psych-oncology research program at the Children’s Cancer Centre, Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne.
