The1916centenary,celebratedacrosstheworld,willhavespecialresonanceintheUnitedStates.Itwillofcoursebeparticularlymeaningfultothe35millionUSresidentswhoclaimIrishancestry.ButthenarrativeoftheRisingwillresonatewithallAmericanswhocherishtheprinciplesoffreedomandself-de-terminationwhichshapedtheirownhistory. Aswehonourandinterrogatethe1916legacy,wewillalsopresentthedynamicandmulti-facetedIrelandoftoday.Thedefiningcharacteristicofourcentenaryprogrammewillbetopresentmoderntwenty-firstcenturyIreland-with1916asthepointofdeparture,wewillchartthejourneyandthepointofarrival,andseektopositionourselvesforthenextstepsonthatgreatcontinuingjourney.
