July 2014Dear Supporter,As I come to you this July I can only think of the quote by Thomas Paine, “These are the times that trymen’s souls”. It is HOT. Day after day of 110 plus or minus a few degrees. A tough existence for most ofthe pigs here in Arizona so what possible good reason could there be to continue to breed pot belly pigshere? GREED! Thanks to that woman from England and the American media blitz, the fad to have a“micro mini” or “Tea Cup” pig spread like wildfire across this country and now there are thousands morepigs in need of homes because people believed the lies they have been told by the “Tea Cup” breedersthat these pigs will be 35 to 50 pounds. Not one minute of thought or consideration is ever given to the innocent animals behind the humaninsatiable appetite to massage their ego with exotic animals. Ever since the first group of pot belly pigswere brought here in 1985, the flood gates of abuse and neglect of one more exotic species were opened.Once the initial fad began to die out because people began to realize that they did not want a 120 to 170pound strong independent animal bulldozing their backyard or pushing over their furniture or attackingthem or their household members, the new “Tea Cup” fad began. They inbreed them until they becomesmaller with many congenital health issues or starve them so they won’t grow big and you will have theideal little house pet, a “Tea Cup” pig. WRONG! It is animal cruelty pure and simple and the breedersshould be turned in to animal control. They are no different than any other individual whose animalswill be confiscated and the owners prosecuted for starving their animals. Why do we put up with this?Because it is a commercial business and there is money to be made just like the Puppy Mills.Pigs are wonderful, sensitive, intelligent animals and many who have them love them dearly but notenough people do. Just go to the livestock auctions here in Arizona and see how many are not loved. It isoutrageous that we as a “moral” society accept killing of all of our disposable animals when they nolonger fit into our life styles or there just aren’t homes for them because we have either unintentionallyor intentionally overbred them. The ages of pigs now needing homes are younger than everbefore and the numbers are out of control. It is becoming moredifficult for us to cope with these increased numbers. Please dowhatever you are able to do to stem this tide. I know that I ampreaching to the choir, but maybe you will encounter oneperson and convince that person to not buy a “Tea Cup” pig.One at a time we hope to stop this insanity.Thank you for caring,Mary SchanzPresident & Co-Founder

n the May newsletter youwere introduced toCharlotte, a rescued pig who

just happened to be pregnant. Sherejected her babies leaving us tobecome the moms. Her five boyskept us busy with several feedingsthroughout each day and night, worrying about the runt whonever seemed to grow like hisbrothers, getting medicine andPedialite down that same runtwho developed diarrhea, cleaningtheir playpen which was theirnighttime home inside the VisitorCenter, making runs to pick upgoat’s milk, and on and on. Themany nights of interrupted sleepand the extra work involved haveall been worth it though!

We started with feedings of goat’smilk in a pie plate except for EdAllfree who insisted on being fedfrom an eye dropper for quitesome time. We were so excitedwhen he began eating from thepan like the others! It wasamazing how fast the boys couldsuck down a pan of milk! Laterwe began adding a little mashmade of a mix of Pig Starter andYouth Food. Gradually theamount of mash overtook thewww.ironwoodpigs.org [email protected]

amount of milk. After eachfeeding the babies had to bewiped down because they were somessy with their meal, divingright into the pan of milk andmash. Jango and Huratio reallydidn’t like the bath thing at all andlet everyone know about it!When the babies got older wetransitioned from mash to drygrain with fruits and vegetables.

On behalf of these adorablepiggies, we want to say a huge, giant THANK YOU to Shelby ofHoofsnHorns Farm Sanctuary andCarol Hawkes, a neighbor ofIronwood who both provided milkfrom their goats to feed ourbabies. They were so generouswith letting us have as muchgoat’s milk as we needed, whenever we needed it. I reallydon’t think the babies would be as

healthy as they are now orpossibly have even survivedwithout the milk provided bythese two ladies (well, by theirgoats ). Our heartfelt thanks goout to Carol and Shelby!

Jango, Huratio, Riley, Ed Allfreeand Si are all doing fantastic now. They have grown into chubbylittle piggies who have funplaying in the hay, mud and water. The nights warmed up enoughthat in early May we began lettingthem sleep outside in the shelter

inside their pen. They haveaccess to two connected pens, sothere is plenty of room to run andplay. It wasn’t too long beforethey got big enough to go out intothe exercise yard for short dailyexcursions. Here Riley and Siwere the first to get brave enoughto try out the wading pool.

Huratio is our littlest boy and theone we worried about most often.Thankfully, he finally began togain his strength and put on someweight until he was able to keepup with his brothers. He playsand tumbles and pushes rightalong with the others. It is so cute

to watch them play! Ed Allfreeloves to have his tiny bellyrubbed. Jango enjoys a good earrub. Si and Riley like beingpetted but would rather eat thananything else! All five boys arevery social with each other andwith people. They’ve beenhandled so much since birth thatthey are super friendly.

On the morning of May 27th Itook the five boys to the clinicwhere they were neutered by Dr.Neal and her vet tech Becky. Thebabies were excellent patients andquickly recovered from theirordeal. By the time I pulled intothe sanctuary’s driveway shortlyafter noon, they were squealing inanticipation of a late lunch actingas if nothing had happened tothem.

It has really been a team effort tofeed and care for these piglets. We owe a lot not only to Shelby,Carol and their goats but to thestaff and volunteers who helpedwith the feeding and socializing. You may have heard the Africanproverb: “It takes a village to raisea child.” That certainly applies tothis situation. It took acommunity of animal lovers toraise these boys into happy, healthy piggies.

When Aidan arrived at thesanctuary it was evident he wasdifferent than most pigs. His teethwere a bit underdeveloped andbroken; he had sensitive skin frombeing indoors and he was a bitjumpy. Aidan was going to needsome special attention and love.

We knew Aidan would do muchbetter if he were to be adoptedthan if he were out in one of ourfields. I immediately put a pleaout to some people I knew thatwould be good parents for him. When Aimee said she would loveto bring him in to her family Ithought it would be a great fit.

Aimee and her husband have onepig, Petunia, and several otheranimals including chickens.Their yard is very large with tonsof trees and grass. They love theiranimal family so dearly. I knewAidan would love theenvironment and be welcomedwith open arms. After I made avisit to check out Aidan’s newhome we made arrangements forme to bring Aidan to his newfamily.

When I arrived with Aidan,Aimee was so enchanted whenshe saw him. Who wouldn’t be!?When Aidan came out of hiscarrier and stepped onto the grasshe immediately went to Aimee’shusband, Andy. He gave himkisses and seemed to feel reallycomfortable around him. Aidanthen did some exploringthroughout the yard and under thetrees. He even rooted around alittle bit. I’m sure the openness ofhis new yard was as exciting as itwas overwhelming. He was histimid self at first but warmed upquickly to everyone.

Petunia, Aimee’s other pig, came

out to greet Aidan. Neither raiseda hair at the other and theyseemed to accept one another.Aidan was really interested inexploring his new home andfinding all of the best places tolounge, so the two didn’t spend alot of time together at first.

Aidan, now known as Boaris, currently spends his days in a

green wonderland. He oftenhangs out under a fig tree with hisnew sister Petunia. The twospend a lot of time together andseem to enjoy each other’scompany. Boaris is slowlylearning that he can come in thehouse and sleep with Petunia. Inthe meantime he has a largeshelter outside that he can hangout in.

Boaris loves meeting theneighbors and giving kisses. Hegets along well with all of theother family animals. It was suchan easy transition. We couldn’t bemore thankful.

Here are Aimee’s feelings onwelcoming Boaris to the family:

“Dear Taryn,

Thank you so much for allowingsweet Boaris into our home andinto our hearts. I cannot sayenough about this little guy! Hegreets me every morning with somany grunts and kisses! I thinkhe is telling me about hisadventures and telling me he ishappy. :) He will give me a kiss, assume the belly rub position, andwiggle his way right onto my lap!He is a snuggle bug of a pig ifever there was one! Oh! Andlet’s not forget sucky face! Ohthat sucky face was enough tohave done me in alone! What’sreally great is when he gives me alick, then makes sucky face! I canbarely take it! Oh! :) And anotherthing that is so very wonderful is

the face. It is not a common pigface; he has a uniquecharacteristic of a tongue that justwon’t stay in his sweet mouth. ILOVE it! Just looking at the face

is enough to make one’s own facehurt from smiling and will warmone’s soul. His favorite pastimesare sitting in his pool or under thefig trees, belly rubs, kisses, healthy snacks, belly rubs, spending time with his new buddyPetunia pig, belly rubs...and did Imention belly rubs? lol

Thank you from the bottom of ourhearts for choosing us as adoptiveparents for this sweet boy!

To Spay or Not to Spayhen giving tours orspeaking withsupporters and visitors,

I am often asked why we spay ourfemales if all the males areneutered. That’s a good question.Thirteen years ago when Ben,Mary and I started Ironwood we

thought that just neutering themales to prevent any pregnancieswas good enough. Of course wespayed any females that went outfor adoption so there would be no“accidents” out in their newhomes. As the sanctuary grewand we learned more about pot-bellied pigs, experience taught usseveral other reasons why weshould get the girls altered.

First, there is a health risk asfemale pigs age. Nearly 85% ofthem develop uterine tumors overtime. These can grow into lifethreatening problems if notremoved. We have taken in oldergirls whose bellies were bulgingand lopsided, as if they had abasketball inside. The rest of theirbodies were thin and bony due tothe tumor sucking all theirnutrition away. Not all of them

survived their surgery, with thedamage to their body being too faradvanced. For example, late thisMay we took in a stray that wasfound near our Annex whomwe’ve named Dottie. Her bellywas hanging low and large withemaciated hips, so we assumedshe was either pregnant or had atumor. Dottie went to our vet’sclinic for a sonogram. She has ahuge tumor but is too anemic toundergo surgery just yet. Dottie isgetting iron supplements as wellas a high fat, high calorie diet toprepare her body to handle thespay surgery.

In April we spayed Mary Helenwho arrived here in January of2014. Her tummy was full androunded, looking suspiciouslylike there was a tumor present. She only had a small tumor but itwas blocking the opening of heruterus causing a great deal of fluidretention. The poor girl had 18pounds of fluid inside her uterus!Spaying Mary Helen saved herfrom carrying that uncomfortableamount of liquid that would haveonly increased over time andeventually killed her.

Several years ago we took Betsyin to be spayed. She was stillrather young, less than ten yearsold yet she was carrying a 42pound tumor that was barelyobvious from the outside. Canyou imagine how that felt! Youmay have read Mary’s articleabout Aibileen on page six of our

January 2014 newsletter. Thatpoor girl had retained fetuses andnumerous adhesions and wouldhave certainly died if she hadn’tgotten spayed when she did. Most of the pigs we have hadspayed that are 7 years or olderhave had small tumors or ovariancysts present. It is a very commonoccurrence in pigs.

Preventing pregnancies and healthissues are the top two reasons forgetting a pig spayed. Manypeople are not aware that pigs gointo heat every month for 4-6days. That’s twelve times a year!During their heat cycle pigs canundergo some frustrating andannoying changes in theirpersonalities. One of our manyCharlottes whom we call OneEared Charlotte would run aroundlike a complete maniac pushing, shoving and gnawing oneveryone’s legs and evenattacking the ATV’s tires.Penelope (also one of several bythat name) would become fixatedon the wading pools. She dumpedthe water out then drug the poolall over the field, smashing it intopieces and once even shoving one

canned pumpkin and oatmeal arenecessary as their bodies react tothe anesthesia and trauma ofsurgery. It can be very timeconsuming for the staff. Wenormally will only spay one tothree girls at a time due to theincreased after care as well asthem tying up pen space which isneeded for incoming or sick pigs.

Since the girls have to be withouta pool or mud wallow, we are alsorestricted by the weather as towhen or if we can have thesurgery done. We have so manyweeks and months oftemperatures well over 100 thatbeing without a pool or mud to

cool off is just pure torture as wellas dangerous for a pig. Late falland winter are prime times forspays to occur……if nobody elseneeds emergency surgery for ablocked urethra or dental surgerybecause they can’t eat or removalof mammary tumors, etc. Yikes! We still hang on to that goal ofgetting all our girls spayed sonone will have to suffer throughuterine tumors, cysts, retainedfluid or frustrating behaviorchanges. It may never happen, but we won’t stop trying!

---Donna

up into a tree. Penelope cost usseveral pools before we got herspayed.

Some of the females feel the needto chase people and nibble ontheir toes or the calves of theirlegs, neither of which feels verygood. These behavioral issues arenot always present during heat

cycles. Some pigs are like Cocoor Lacey who just become overlyfriendly wanting lots of attention.Pippa and a few others becomemore vocal and go around huffingat pigs and people. Some such asChristine or Claudia in heryounger days become more“active” and constantly mountany pig within reach. Others aresimply impossible to be around

www.ironwoodpigs.org [email protected]

Issue 59 IRONWOOD PIG SANCTUARY Page 11

iduring that few days each month.I mentioned earlier in this articlethat we started out just neuteringthe males here at Ironwood. Oncewe discovered all these reasons toget the girls spayed, it became agame of catch up. We made ahuge effort and got a lot of ourgirls taken care of, but theconstant intake of pigs has made itdifficult to go back and spayeveryone. We can only get somuch surgery time with our vetsand there are always so manyother operations needed besidesjust spaying and neutering. Thereis a list of 44 girls to be spayedwhich is only 7.3% of our totalpopulation and we do as many aswe can whenever possible.

Another consideration withspaying is the time involved withthe recovery and after care. Thepig needs to stay in a cleanenvironment away from pools andmud wallows until the incisionheals. This means 2-3 weeks ofliving in one of our holding pensnormally set aside for newcomersor pigs with illnesses. Some ofthe pigs have difficultyovercoming the anesthesia andneed almost constant supervisionfor the first couple of days andnights. Some of the older girlsrequire subcutaneous or IV fluidsduring the first day or two of theirrecovery which means a staffmember has to be with them at alltimes since a pig won’tnecessarily pay attention whenyou tell them not to move aroundand yank out the needle or knockthe IV stand over. (Don’t theyrealize we’re only trying to helpthem!) Special diets of mashes,

ur pigs are so lucky. They have good people like you who support them and good people likethese folks who go to a lot of effort to see our piggies get what they need for a good life. Allof this happened without any input or time spent by us which is such a relief since we run as

Thanks to everyonewho hiked the peaks, donated to the event, printed tee shirts, businesses and individuals who sponsored anddonated items for the raffle. A special thanks as well to Green Vegetarian Restaurant and Nami Soft Serve and Coffee who did the annualIronwood Soynami. They hosted the luncheon and raffle and donated 100%of their proceeds for the day to Ironwood. ---Mary

This was Kristie Ramos’ second year to do a wonderful vegan bake sale for us at the Earth Day event in Tucson. She got a grant from A Well Fed World to help with the cost of the ingredients, Betts Printing on Park Ave todonate the printing and she got some volunteers to help with the baking. The results were wonderful as you cansee from the pictures. Kristie had a wonderful day talking with everyone and promoting Ironwood and raisedalmost $1200 for our pigs as she also promoted cruelty free eating. What could be better!

oo is so cutehere enjoyinghis summer mud

bath. He is one of 58pigs we brought fromwhat is now our Annexback in January of 2002.We took them not longafter Ironwood hadopened in June of 2001.All 58 pigs arrived intwo large trailer loads.Roo is one of our East

Field pigs. Since we took all of these pigs not longafter we opened there was still plenty of spaceavailable for them and we quickly made a field wherethey could all live together. That’s how it has been forthe past 12 plus years. However we now have only 24pigs living in the field that once housed 58. Somehave been moved to other fields here at Ironwoodwhere they can receive more intensive care and manyhave passed on.

So Roo has comfortably lived in our East Field withhis best friend Buck all these years. All of the pigswere unsocialized and without names when theyarrived, but over the years Donna has given themnames. They have slowly allowed us to pet them andmost now have sponsors. Buck is especially friendlyso Roo has slowly warmed up as well seeing that hisbest friend allows us to pet him. As you can see fromhis picture Roo and the others in the East Field are notmicro mini pigs. Just a friendly warning folks.

hristine, Barbara and Karter were namedafter our three vets which we thought wasfitting since they play a large part in caring

for all of our pigs. These girls plus Aibileen, Karloff and James Dixon(not pictured here) have now been with us for slightlyover a year since their arrival on June 19th of 2013. Ithas been quite a year for them since their arrival. Theyare all settled together now in one of our large fields. Our youngest, Christine, certainly the daughter of oneof the grown girls, is growing up herself. She hasexperienced many trials over the year. She was spayedwith the others and later developed a suture infectionthat ended up taking several trips to our vet and manyhours of labor on our part. We had to submerge herpart way in a warm Epsom salts bath every other dayfor weeks. Since they are all wild pigs it was not aneasy task, but with enough animal crackers on handshe soon learned that the warm bath was worth it.Barbara was in the pen with Christine for a good dealof the time since she developed her own infection andalso was having difficulty with one of her ears. Atleast Christine had company while living out of thefield away from her family. Karter delivered 6 babiesbut only three were alive and only two survived.

I wonder if their hard life in the desert has made themmore vulnerable to many of their health issues. It hasbeen a long road to health for them and a lot ofunexpected expense and many hours of work on ourpart. But when you look at these three beautifulpiggies how can one not know it was worth all of ourefforts. Now they have a chance to grow old together.

Dear Mary, Ben, Donna, Tim and theremainder of the staff of Ironwood,

I attended your fabulous Open House onSaturday, November 9. You pulled out allstops and made the event most rewarding forthe visitors and supporters of your work, andby extension, your labor of love.

The pigs are fabulous. I tell people whohave never heard of Ironwood P.S. that theresidents are treated like Kings and Queens.

I saw “Amber”, she is a small pig andher scar is almost invisible. She seems veryhappy and I am certain that the intrinsicreward for saving her is enormous.

Tim was an excellent guide. He told ourgroup that he loves working there every day.A sincere fellow!

I was surprised just how wild anddangerous looking the desert scrub aroundIronwood appeared to be. Rattlesnakes haveno sense of humor. I am sure that you arecareful and mindful of the potentialdangers.

My friends from Green Valley had agreat visit as well. My only regret was that mysponsored pig, “Travis” did not survive 2013.

Thanks again and best wishes!!Bob Durkee
