Before You Spend a Dime Podcasting is usually talked about in a manner that simplifies the actual amount of work involved, the time required, and funding needed to have a successful show. This is usually presented by people who have a course to sell you. We want to lay it out and have you answer a few questions, so you can walk away better informed about what it takes to run a successful show.

So please take a few minutes and read the following pages, then sit down in a quiet place and write out the answer to the questions being asked of you. Be honest and evaluate your current situation.

What is Your Why? As you are planning your podcast one thing that you should determine is your WHY.

Why are you wanting to podcast? Why are you wanting to devote hours of your week to this?

Why is what your potential audience will be asking: “Why should I subscribe?” or “Why should I trust you?”

Your “why” is your innermost specific motivation for starting a podcast. A good “why” can follow the pattern of, “I want to [desire] so that I can [action].

“I want to make more money” is not a good enough why and your audience will see it eventually.

“I want to podcast, so I can share my passion and help others understand it”.

This is better, but What’s Your Why?

What is Your What? Podcasting allows anyone, anywhere, to communicate with people all over the world. All you need is a computer or a smartphone with access to the internet.

You can:

• Discuss the news and/or current events. • Showcase your hobbies and/or interests. • Give instructions. • Tell stories. • Talk business. • Talk about yourself. • Entertain. • Highlight important causes.

In producing a podcast, you will make connections with your audience, they may grow to feel that you are talking directly to them, person to person. So, what is your what?

Who is Your What for?

So now that you have your Why and What, who are you making your podcast for?

This step is just as important and your Why. You need to have a complete understanding of exactly who your audience is. This will guide your content creation, how you promote your episodes and factor into the time it takes to grow an audience.

Creating a persona for your audience A lot of people talk about creating an ideal listener persona or avatar. All this is, is a list representing your ideal listener containing, demographics, likes, interests, goals and reasoning for paying attention to you.

You should keep that avatar in mind every time you plan a piece of content:

“Would my avatar, enjoy this episode?

“Would my avatar, react to this social media post the way I want them to?

This persona and these questions will help you keep your efforts focused and on track, both of which make for more engaging content. They also help you plan future content with ease. A win for you AND your listener - woohoo!

Can you describe your ideal listener? Here is an example;

“My avatar is 32. His name is Mike, and he has a full-time job but is looking for a side hustle. He’s been wanting to start a podcast for months now, and in a continued

search for courage found “Sitch Radio”. He’s a good employee and has a passion for books, and really needs a little truthful help on how to plan his podcast.

Mike lives with his Girlfriend and they both want to travel more, hate their jobs and don’t have enough time to pursue their passions.

Time The Podcast Production Process I am using the below action items and timeframes as an example of how much time can be consumed in producing a show. These are not definitive timeframes, nor should they be used as a goal and they will vary depending on your knowledge and expertise. You will improve processes and workflows and these estimates will reduce as you perfect your skill.

Budget The Bare Minimum The very minimum you require to the podcast is a microphone to record some audio, a podcast hosting account to deliver it to the world and some very basic, home-made cover art. This is assuming that you already have a computer to record it on, and then upload to your host, of course.

The bare minimum is easily enough to start out with, and many hobbies, or even business podcasts, do fine on the bare minimum for years.

I encourage people to start out with the bare minimum and follow that approach for the first 10 episodes. For one, it keeps the complications very, very low, so you have no excuse to get episodes out regularly, building your influence and gaining practice as you go. For another, it means you can decide if you like this podcasting lark before you invest a fortune in it.

The Bare Minimum

Costs:

• Headset microphone: $50-$100

• Podcast Hosting: $10-$45 per month

• Music: $40

• Cover Art: $25

What’s the Final Cost for Podcasting?

The Cost of Hobby Podcasting

Up front cost of approx. $210, then $45 per month to maintain hosting.

Obviously, these prices vary for a multitude of reason. Do your research, spend wisely and slowly upgrade along the way.

Before you decide on starting a Podcast We want to be upfront but not scare you off;

• YES, it will be difficult. • YES, you will make mistakes. • YES, you may change your course a time or two.

But I can tell you this; • There is enough room for all of us. • It will get easier. • Your message matters. • Your audience will grow. • People will get to know you and hear your message.
