He began piano studies at the age of 7 with Mrs. Hanna Barzilai and later studied with Dr. Asaf Zohar. He has studied in the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music of Tel Aviv University (in cooperation with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra) with Prof. Tomer Lev and thereafter with Prof. Arie Vardi, and finished his Bachelor's degree with distinction. His acclaimed debut CD (with Chopin's third sonata, Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit and Schumann Etudes Symphoniques) has been broadcast, since its release in 2008, in the major Israeli radio stations, and was recommended by Noam Ben-Zeev, the music critic of "Haaretz" newspaper. The CD was also broadcast in American radio stations, where it was described by the Texas Public Radio as "Great music preformed by a great pianist that you do not want to miss". Ishay Shaer, The Riverfront

By Nigel Jarrett »

4:42pm Tuesday 9th December 2008

As bad luck or bad planning would have it, prize-winning pianist Ishay Shaer gave the ‘wrong’ audience the more formal of his considerable talents this week through no fault of his own.

The current winner of the triennial Newport International Competition for Young Pianists appeared in the city of his 2006 triumph for a lunchtime appearance, heading for Cardiff the following night for a longer and more measured evening recital.

It was back-to-front for whatever reason and deprived Newport of due ceremony if not sixty minutes of superlative, if somewhat breathless, music-making.

As recompense, the Riverfront made an event of it by regaling its Studio space with impressive drapes and floral displays.

The 25-year-old Israeli was more than worth it, taking little rest in his programme of Scarlatti, Beethoven and Chopin but demanding that his audience remain alert in exchange for a necessarily whirlwind presentation.

This confirmed that he was an outstanding Chopin player, investing the Sonata No 3 with the delicacy and power it demands by halting the pace so convincingly in the largo that the first movement’s intensity, the scherzo’s frenetic revisions and the final one’s relentless gallop sounded truly inspired.

This refusal to shrink from the music’s worked-up core also made the Ballade No 3 memorable, despite a slip at the very beginning, and there was rigour aplenty in two Domenico Scarlatti sonatas and Beethoven’s Sonata No 30 in E, all well-known pieces rendered with a refreshing lack of over-familiarity.

Classical review: Ishay Shaer, Etnahta, Jerusalem Theater By URY EPPSTEIN 05/29/2012 21:32 A young Israeli pianist, Ishay Shaer, paradoxically better known abroad than in this country, was presented to the local audience in the Etnahta Chamber Music series as a last-minute substitute for another pianist who had cancelled. Right from the start, Shaer surprised with an exquisitely soft touch and meditative tempo in Debussy’s Images. There was no rigidity but a Debussy-like, appealing flexibility, and a decisive, well accentuated left hand. In Beethoven’s Bagatelles, the pianist highlighted the contrasts between the composer’s mostly concealed intimacy and his characteristic impulsive outbursts. The program’s highlight was Schumann’s Symphonic Etudes in their rarely performed first version (1834). Though an extremely demanding work, the pianist did not indulge in showy virtuosity, despite his impressive technical competence, but concentrated on its formidable aesthetic and artistic qualities. He conveyed its complex and incessantly changing emotional content with utmost sensitivity and intensity. While refraining tastefully from demonstrative overstatements, he expressed the composer’s sometimes tortured and often exuberant statements subtly yet also with force of conviction. One looks forward with expectation to this obviously talented young pianist’s further development and progress http://www.jpost.com/ArtsAndCulture/Music/Article.aspx?id=271911

No Calm before the Storm Kunstverein: Ishay Shaer in Pianoplus By Fritz Herzog Not the meteorological phenomenon, but Shakespeare’s last play, "The Tempest", is the programme of Beethoven's piano sonata Op. 31 No. 2, carrying the same title. The 1983 born Israeli pianist Ishay Shaer, who was a semi-finalist in last year's "International Telekom Beethoven Competition", treats the composer’s allusions by “reading” both the musical and the literary texts: Asking questions, providing answers, leading dialogues, meditating, narrating or being impulsively enthusiastic. Ideas that seem as though they develop at the very moment give his interpretation of the piece a persuasive originality. In his "Pianoplus" performance, Shaer played, in addition to Beethoven, also Bach's prelude and fugue in F sharp minor (BWV 883), the last 10 preludes from Op. 28 by Chopin, Liszt's concert etude No. 2 in F minor, "La Leggierezza", and "Gaspard de la Nuit" by Ravel. Especially worth mentioning is the pianist's ability to experience each and every piece at an equal level of authenticity. The excerpt from "The Well-Tempered Clavier" captivates him just as intensively as the gentle autobiographical introspections of the zealous, lovesick Chopin. Shaer handles Liszt's virtuosity calmly and pleasantly, and in Ravel's work he unfolds the entire palette of Impressionism, with the widest range of dynamics. Here, as in Beethoven, he is exceptionally convincing. (4/08/2010)
