ISMANAM-2019 Pre-Conference Workshop on Advances in Nano-Scale Materials Characterization
July 7, 2019
Venue: ICSR Auditorium, IIT Madras
Convenors Dr. K.G. Pradeep and Prof. B.S. Murty
IIT Madras
Organized by National Facility for Atom Probe Tomography (NFAPT)
IIT Madras
ABOUT THE NFAPT
To improve the quality of nano materials research
and development in the country, NFAPT has been
set up at IIT Madras with the participation of
partner institutions namely, IIT Bombay, IIT
Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT
Ropar, ARCI Hyderabad/Chennai, BRNS and DST
Nano Mission. NFAPT houses the state-of-the-art
Local Electrode Atom Probe (Cameca; LEAP 5000
XR) along with Dual Beam workstation (Helios G4
UX SEM with Focused Ion Beam) for LEAP sample
preparation and a Tecnai T12 TEM. This is the first
remotely operable near-atomic scale materials
characterization facility of the country. Currently,
it is operated in a three-shift mode every day on a
24x7 basis. Each partner institution has been
provided with a workstation enabling them to
operate the LEAP located at IIT Madras remotely.
The partner institutions send their bulk samples
to NFAPT, from which APT tips are being
prepared using Focused Ion Beam (FIB). The
activities of NFAPT can be followed at
https://nfapt.iitm.ac.in.
Design of metallic materials with optimum
properties for applications needs the
understanding of local structure and elemental
distribution at the near-atomic scale. Elements can
be distributed homogeneously or remain in the
form of clusters, precipitates or can be segregated
at grain boundaries and interfaces in various
materials. The workshop is therefore aimed to
provide fundamental aspects of nano-scale
materials characterization using advanced
microscopy techniques at near-atomic resolutions
including aberration corrected TEM and APT and
their collective applications.
