touch, and sight. New technology is being developed to appeal to our sense of smell.
DigiScents, an interactive media company, is creating iSmell Digital Scent
Technology, new software which will enable scents to be broadcast from the Web.
This new technology will make it possible to send and receive scented emails and to
add scent elements to Web sites.
Digital scent technology is emerging as the latest tool in ecommerce. This

technology helps to develop characters and gives a sensitive intelligence of reality.
Digital scent technologies get its extensive range of applications in scentertinment
movies, music and games, in communication which includes websites which is
improved with smell. In the new future you will be able not only to just see but also to

The digitalization and broadcast of scent will enable consumers to send scented mail,

EVOLUTION

company specialized in the “perfumed web”.Oaklandbased company called
"DigiScents" wants you to go on the Internet, download "streaming scent," and play it
back on a device called an "iSmell," a portable scent synthesizer that's sort of a cross
between a printer and a speaker. It is in the size of a small loudspeaker, the machine is
linked to a computer and recognizes hidden instructions from a webpage or a games
console to reconstruct a smell from its scentbased of 128 essential oils,and transmit
it.
Many scientists have started for the virtual reality from the last 5 to 6 years.
The basic idea for this was given by the perfume making companies for the
advertisements of their perfumes because smell is the only sense that cannot be
turned off. If we can find the essence of a biological smell and build a profile, we

can digitalize and broadcast it. The sense of smell is closely tied to memory and
emotion,making scent a powerful way to reinforce ideas. If a picture is worth a
thousand words, a scent is worth a thousand pictures. DigiScents hopes that by
broadcasting scents to Web sites, games and ads, businesses across the digital
spectrum will experience the sweet smell of success. Founders of iSmell device are
Dexter Smith and Joel Lloyd Bellenson.
TECHNOLOGY BEHIND ISMELL
The company offers iSmell(TM), a personal smellsynthesizer. It is a device
one can attach to their computer, offering a range of smells. ScentStream(TM)
software as driver program for iSmell. Scent Registry(TM), a digital directory of
thousands of smells for license.
• Smell Synthesizer :
It is a device which is used to generate the smells. So it produce the gas
using computer. There are various types of smell synthesizers available in the market
• Ismell
It is a peripheral device, about the size of a PC speaker that connects to a PC
via a serial or USB port. The iSmell device reads a digital scent file, creates a smell
from a "palette'' of 128 chemicals stored in a cartridge, and then wafts into the air
with a small fan.

The specifications are :
1. It has cartridge of 128 chemicals which is able to produce 10,000 smells
2. To active this device for computer it will require a driver program called
as ScentStream.
• Cartridge
The cartridge will contain chemicals either natural oils or synthetic
fragrances that will be activated by either heat or air pressure, when you send a
signal from your computer. Currently 128 chemicals are stored in a cartridge.
Similar to an ink jet printer, those oils form the core of a replaceable cartridge, which
is inserted in the iSmell device.
The oils are electrically stimulated in different combinations to create specific
smells in response to software prompts programmed into applications. The idea
would be to have a box about the size of a small speaker that would be connected to
your computer and within that box is this cartridge of odors, having a hundred
different small chambers in it, and then on command from the computer, you can
choose various odors within that hundred, to be mixed up together and then puffed
gently out of this port where you can smell it.
BROADCASTING OF SMELL

iSmell, which connects to the user’s computer like a set of speakers, synthesis

file. iSmell technology turns smell into digital codes that can be stored on laser discs
or as computer files, and it can even be emailed. It reads the digital scent file, creates
a smell from a ”palette” of 128 chemicals stored in a cartridge, which wafts into the
air with a small fan.
iSmell Personal Scent Synthesizer is a computer peripheral device
which recreates Scent Objects by mixing and releasing one or more of 128 scents.
The device includes replaceable cartridges similar to those used in color printers.
• ScentPalette Cartridges
The cartridge is contained inside the iSmell device. The
cartridges are filled with over one hundred different fragrant materials that are
emitted alone or incombination. In addition to the general purpose of Scent
Palette there is a possibility of creating industry Specific cartridges for every
thing from fragrances and food to games and movies.

WORKING
A prototype of the iSmell Personal Scent Synthesizer is shaped like a shark's
fin, and it will be connected to your PC through USB. It can be plugged into any
ordinary electrical outlet. Here's how it works:
• DigiScents has indexed thousands of smells based on their chemical structure
and their place on the scent spectrum.
• Each scent is then coded and digitized into a small file.
• The digital file is embedded in Web content or email.
• A user requests or triggers the file by clicking a mouse or opening an email.
• A small amount of the aroma is emitted by the device in the direct vicinity of
the user.
Ismell is personal scent synthesizer, a computer peripheral device. The Ismell
attaches to the serial or USB port of your personal computer an plugs into standard
electrical outlet. The ismell emits naturally based vapors into user's personal space.
The device is triggered either by user activation (like a mouse click) or timed
response. It has an on/off switch in case one's nose gets overwhelmed.
It currently can produce 2 to 128 the power smells with ismell personal scent
synthesizer. The scentstream software will instruct the ismell device to emit one or
combination of over 100 basic scents. The device comes in the handy. It is slightly

The digital smell is basically a hardware software combination. The hardware
part of digital smell will produce the smell, and the software part will evaluate the
smell equation and generate specific signals for specific smell and finally that smell
will be produced by the device. The hardware device is a device like speaker, like
speaker this device is also connected to the computer system. For this device there is
also a driver program which will evaluate the digital equation for generating specific
gas. The small device decodes digital signals from smellenabled Web sites and
actually emits the appropriate smell, all concocted from cartridges that, according to
DigiScents, can emulate thousands of smells.
The implementation of this technology consists of a computer addon, based on
a simple dispenser device with scent producing material, which enables users to
control the type, number and combination of scents to be dispensed in their own
environment, or to affect distant environments by sending relevant instructions to
other users through email or instant messaging.
There is a complete software and hardware solution for scenting digital media
and user. It includes a personal scent synthesize for reproducing and electronic nose
for the detection of the smell. These two peripheral components connected to the
computer and the communication network for the transmission of the digitized smell
data does comprise the digital scent technology and communication.
Digital scent technology digitizes the scent by digitizing the scent along two
parameters the chemical make and its place in scent spectrum then digitized into a
small file which can be transmitted to the internet attached to the enhanced web
content. Then with the help of digital synthesizer connected to the computer the
transmitter scent can be reproduce from the palette of primary odors following the

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS OF SCENT DESIGN
Digitally generated scent has certain properties to consider when designing a
presentation. First, the designer must make a careful selection of the scent emitting
sources to be represented, as the physical characteristics of the viewing environment
usually tend towards a closed room with limited ventilation. In the static world of a
seated entertainment experience, it is not possible to fully represent all of the scent
emitters in any given scene. Second, it takes a number of seconds for the iSmell
device to “render” the scent, 1 to 10 seconds depending on complexity. Further, the
iSmell only renders one scent at a time.
Scent has a “persistence envelope”. This is the period of time the odor can
reasonably be expected to linger in the air surrounding the viewer in a “normal”
viewing environment. During the persistence envelope, it will take a scent with a
stronger intensity to overcome the current scent. Because of this physical reality, it is
better to use scents that have a regularized rotation at the mild intensity level as they
may have to be overcome by a prize or entity/event triggered scent.
SCENTWARE
It is a combination of SoftWare and Hardware. There are two types of software.
One allows you to “Design” your own custom fragrances, and the other allows you to
receive the codes for a custom scent and have them activate a spray device so you can
smell it.

The design software is simple as a web page with pictures of familiar scents
that you can drag with your mouse into a virtual beaker and mix. The combinations
you choose can be saved as a custom fragrance, which gets stored as codes to be
passed to a spray device.
The spray device is a piece of hardware that can be plugged into one of the
serial ports of your computer. This device has a disposable cartridge with a number of
chambers inside, each containing a chemical compound that can be mixed with others
to match the custom scent you’ve created.
ScentMixers are basically programs that will allow the developers to create
their own aromas for multimedia. Once the product is available, the consumers will
be able to use the ScentMixer Scent Creation Software, which allows you to create
your own scents.
• SNORTAL
It is the the Internet's first a scentenabled Web portal. Visiting the Snortal, you
will be able to send scented email, design and register your own smells, and create
and share ScentTracks for your favorite movies and music. The Snortal was developed
for DigiScents as a portal to scented products, features, and entertainment.
• SCENT REGISTRY
To ensure odor authenticity, DigiScent has created scent registry which is a
digital index of thousands of scents that the company will license to developers to
integrate into games, Web sites, advertisements, movies and music.

• DATA BASE REMINISCENTS
ScentObjets can be incorporated in many applications multimedia, for which a
license will be required. Whatever the smell that we are the license for can be entered
in the ReminiScents data base file.
• SCENTTRACKS
ScentTracks is software. By using this software you can edit the smell, create
the smell, create scented greeting cards, add smell for the movies or songs for all
these operation there are some tools are given which user can use.
* File menu > In this file menu they have given new, open, close, save, save as,
search, exit, etc. By these new menu of the ScentTracks user can create
several new smells. By these save and save as menu user can save these
smell in the form of chemical reaction.
* Greeting menu > In this menu user has provided the tools used for greetings
menu. Such as pictures as clip art, word art, chart, etc. The created smell or
ready smell can be attached to the greeting. Such that when greeting opens it
will produce the sweet smell.
* Editor > In editor menu they have given the editor for both the movies as
well as for songs. By using this editor you can add and delete smell at a
particular place in a movie or song. So that when that song continues at
particular place it will produce that inserted smell. But for that we require
different players. Currently they were making “Real Player” for that smell.

• SDK (Scentware Developers Kit)
Set of tools to create content with aroma, includes ReminiScents Database,
API and DLL of iSmell. The fields that could be seen modified are the entertainment,
foods, fragrances and fashion, home and hygiene, science, technology, trips and
education, since it would be possible to be induced knowledge or to be forced
reactions through the aroma, which can mean the following revolution. The SDK is
incredibly easy to implement, we expect to see an explosion of scent enabled content.
Using the ScentWare SDK, a developer can scent enable a game within an hour. The
SDK contains all we need to create killer scented games that allow gamers to smell
environments, entities, and prizes.

your web site is choosing between chocolate, orange, pine forest, the ocean, perfume,
flowers, new car etc.
IMPLEMENTING SCENT
The ScentWare SDK is designed to be a simple and robust solution to the
implementation of scent in an interactive application. It insulates the developer from

having to know if the runtime platform is scent enabled or not. All functionality
appears to work normally on a nonscent enabled machine. It is possible to query the
SDK as to whether the runtime platform is scentenabled to allow the manipulation of
controls and user preference dialogs. The SDK is packaged in a DLL that the
developer ships with their product. This DLL encapsulates/aggregates the iSmell’s
driver DLL so that it is unnecessary for countermeasures to be included in the code to
cover situations in which the iSmell driver is not present.
The scent objects that are used are created with the scent design tool package.
The scent objects are small parameter blocks that take up approximately 300 bytes.
The only memory that the SDK requires is the memory for the scent objects. These
are passed in from the application and need to be static objects, as the SDK will retain
pointers to them and write back to that address on completion of the persistence
period. Deleting or freeing scent objects while the SDK is running will result in an
overwrite condition. The API will cue one dissimilar scent if a command is received
while the device is busy rendering a scent. The cued scent will then be emitted when
the device becomes free.
Programmers implementing scent can either work with an iSmell or with a
software emulator program that will allow them to readily view the scent based
output of their application on screen and in log files.
APPLICATION
There are many applications for digital scent technology such as:

problem the ismell provides locking facility. So that user can lock that
particular smell which he doesn’t like.
One thing to take care is that virus could also be entered via these smell
devices.

A Scent has a strange power over human beings. It can create a mood. In future
these devices will play very well role in our life, such as in Theater, Televisions,
internet etc. There are several streams over which this digital smell is used, Such as
over the television, theater and the web. Hence we conclude that this digital smell
will revolutionized the world. And at every place we will require this device, such as
for scented mail, scented movies, scented songs we must requires this device. This
device will become our need in future.
