The manmade environment is built on the natural environment where animals live. Humans have been building streets,

highways, buildings and ci es without considering animal habitats. Many of these construc ons cause isola on of animal habitats. The

fragmented habitats decrease species diversity which can destroy ecosystems. Since humans are part of natural ecosystem, we cannot

neglect the fact of fragmenta on. There have been many eff orts to reconnect fragmented animal habitats such as building ecological

bridges.

Human habitat is where humans live. It can be defi ned in various ways such as house, community and town which are part of man-

made environment. In my thesis, the human habitat that I refer to is community scale. Are human habitats not isolated? Are we living in

an environment that allows us to interact with people, nature and resources freely? Interes ngly it is not. There are many human habitats

isolated from their surroundings caused by the eff ects of built environment and social system.

Landscape architecture can change the environment se ng which infl uence human behaviors. The changed human

behaviors can lead to social changes as well. I believe the designer should create a posi ve impact within the system

by understanding the en re picture of these impacts.
