WELCOME TO THE 2015 SCHOOL YEAR

Welcome everyone to the 2015 school year at GK! Hard to believe, but another school year is underway. It’s always

great to know that our students, staff and families have returned safely from the holiday period. A very special wel-

come to the many new students, families and staff who join GK for the first time.

We had an extremely smooth and orderly start to the school year last Friday with all of our students in grades 1-6

returning with smiles on their faces and plenty of enthusiasm for the year ahead. Everyone has settled into their

new class routines quickly and the scene is all set for a terrific year ahead.

On Monday, this week, a very excited group of Prep students commenced school for the first time and what an

exciting day they had too! I’m sure some of our Preppies (and parents) thought the day would never eventuate,

such was their level of excitement and enthusiasm! Special thanks to our Parents and Friends Welcome Committee

for providing a welcoming “Cheers & Tears” morning tea which I know was appreciated by those able to attend.

A big thank you also to parents for doing a great job of making sure that your children have returned with their book

bags, water bottles, hats, correct uniform and other items necessary for school. Well done on your organisation!

I also pass on my appreciation and thanks to a fantastic staff team effort that has enabled such a smooth start to

the year. Since the last school day in 2014, many staff have continued to be in and out of the school ahead of their

official return date which was Jan 28th. Staff planning and organisation is to be commended, the results of which

have been seen since day one last week. Thank you!

PARENT COMMUNICATIONS

In the early part of a new school year, there is a lot of information that we need to get out to parents. The infor-

mation is intended to inform you, not overwhelm you! For some of our families, information will provide some wel-

come reminders, for others the information may be entirely new. Some information will be for reading only, whilst in

some cases, parents will need to respond by signing and returning a notice to school.

The online weekly Linkletter and our website will always be two primary means of getting information out to our

families. So too our new electronic sign at the front of the school. For the parents who have subscribed for email

notification of Linkletter uploading to the website, then we occasionally send out emails regarding event reminders.

Paper notices and information will also be distributed from time to time too. We’re also investigating apps that could

be used to push information electronically to parents also, preferably an app that is compatible with QKR that we

already use.

Currently we’re getting together paper information packs which will be distributed to all families at the end of next

week. Rather than send out a raft of information day by day, we’ll be distributing a number of items including a

grade information booklet along with some other parent information bulletins in one pack so look out for this please

and do take some time to read everything.

STAFFING UPDATE

We welcome several new staff members Shirley Borg (Student Wellbeing and Engagement), Amy Proberts (4),

Daniel Boulton and Aimee Deacon (5) and Bianca Perry (2). Louise Ramsdell also joins the admin team so wel-

come Louise! Regrettably, our Music teacher Loretta Simmonds accepted a position at Hazel Glen College on the

last day of term 4 so we thank Loretta for the great job she did in Music at GK and we wish her well in her new posi-

tion . We welcome and thank Kate Whelan who has stepped in to take Music classes at GK for the time being.

SCHOOL SHOES -

It’s great to see so many students wearing shoes that meet uniform requirements. A reminder to parents

though as we’ve noticed some fluoro laces and non compliant shoe colors.

2015. The ‘NO HAT, NO PLAY’ rule operates from September through to April

so please make sure those hats are in school bags and ready to be worn on the

first day of school. Also, hats should be in good condition please without

frayed edges and graffiti free.

POLICY STATEMENT – SCHOOL UNIFORM PHILOSOPHICAL BASIS Wearing School Uniform fosters pride in the school and unifies the students from various social backgrounds into a cohesive school unit. GUIDELINES 1. The wearing of school uniform is compulsory for all students except where exemption is given by School

Council. 2. The acceptable school uniform should consist of a combination of items from the designated uniform list. Any

modifications to school uniform other than adjustment for proper fit are unacceptable 3. Students participating in interschool sport and excursions will wear the appropriate uniform. 4. All Grade 5 and 6 Sporting Teams will be expected at lunch to change back into their school uniform prior to

the start of session 4. 5. The majority of school uniform items should be available for purchase from the volunteer-operated Uniform

Shop. 6. Second Hand Uniform Shop

a. A second hand uniform shop should operate to enable parents to sell or buy good quality used items of school uniform.

b. The second hand uniform shop should be operated by the PFA and the commission earned on the sale of garments should contribute to the fundraising of the PFA.

7. Arrangements can be made to supply uniforms via State Schools Relief for families experiencing economic hardship.

8. A special jacket for the Grade 6 students will be available for purchase each year. 9. Guidelines relating to out of uniform days will be published in the Linkletter prior to the event. 10. Hats

a. Wearing a hat (as prescribed in the uniform list) for all outdoor activities is compulsory from September to April each year unless the activity is conducted in a shaded area.

b. Hats are not to be worn inside. 11. Hair

a. Hair should be neat and well groomed at all times. b. Hair which is shoulder length or longer should be tied back at all times in line with our Head Lice

Management Policy. c. Extreme hair colors and styles are not acceptable at any time including special out of uniform days.

12. Accessories All hair accessories should conform to the colour scheme prescribed in the uniform list. (navy blue, royal blue, pale blue and white)

13. Scarves should conform to the colour scheme prescribed in the uniform list. 14. Fashion jewellery (including plastic wrist bands) is a health hazard during any physical activity and should not

be worn to school. Stud earrings in pierced ears are an exception. 15. Make up and coloured nail polish are not to be worn except for approved school activities. 16. All shoes should be selected to conform to the description in the uniform list and all shoe laces should match

shoe colours. 17. Teachers will hand out a Student Uniform Infringement Notice when incorrect school uniform is worn. If the

issue is ongoing then teachers need to speak to the Principal/Assistant Principal for follow up. 18. Parents are recommended to purchase school back packs that are endorsed by the Australian Physiotherapy

Association in order to minimise the risk of back injury to students. School back packs with our school logo which meet these guidelines are available from the uniform shop.

19. The School Uniform list will be published in the newsletter at the start of each year and be available in both the Parent Section of the school website and from the office.

20. Monitoring of Policy a. The monitoring of the School Uniform Policy should be the responsibility of the Uniform Sub-

Committee with the day-by-day decisions to be at the discretion of the Principal. b. In the event of conflict the School Council should be the arbiter. c. The Uniform Sub-Committee should be accountable to the School Council.

21. Enforcement of the Uniform School Policy is the responsibility of the principal and supported by staff.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

SCHOOL CROSSINGS Please use the crossings as directed by the crossing supervisors. Set the right example and don’t be tempted to walk

with your child/ren directly across the road instead of walking a bit further and crossing safely. This also includes not

taking short cuts across the roundabout or across the school carpark entrance and exit driveways.

We are very appreciative of the great work done by our Calendonia Drive School Crossing Supervisors Michelle and

Tracey. Making sure that pedestrians cross the road safely is not an easy task. Road safety is the responsibility of all

users—drivers, passengers and pedestrians and the crossing supervisors are there to provide assistance to those needing

to cross a busy road at a busy time of day. Always show courtesy and respect please and importantly, just do the right

thing.

STREET PARKING Please take notice of the parking restrictions in Calendonia Drive and nearby streets. You will be booked if a Bylaws

Officer notices you doing the wrong thing.

PLEASE READ THE PARKING RESTRICTION SIGNS CAREFULLY to avoid being booked.

SCHOOL/STAFF CARPARK The carpark is only able to be used for a 2 minute pick-up or drop off (ALONG THE DOUBLE YELLOW LINES

ONLY). Parents/grandparents are advised that the carpark is not to be used for parking and walking students to/from

classrooms. Where it is observed that parents are parking their cars in the carpark, there will be follow up. We are a

large school and need all of the parking spaces for teachers, non teaching staff, and others who visit the school on

school business (tradesmen, psychologists, speech pathologists, pre-service teachers etc.) We have a number of part

time staff who have different start and finish times so spaces need to be available for the parking needs of all staff and

school business visitors.

Further information regarding how the pick-up and drop off zone works can be found on our website (About Us /

Facilities & Grounds / Pick-up and Drop-off Zone). When drivers follow the rules, the pick-up and drop-off area gen-

erally runs as safely and smoothly as possible during the busy peak 15 minutes period prior to and after school.

St HELENA COLLEGE CARPARK Please note that the College carpark is only for the use of college staff and students. A number of their students are

also drivers so the college needs all parking spaces to be available for their use.

Hoping for everyone’s cooperation please …. Jill Ramsay

News from the School Community Garden

First off – a big THANK YOU and “brrrkkk brrrkkk” to all the families who took care of the chickens over the summer

holidays! Not only did they get to have a run around and some company, but our community school garden got wa-

tered and we haven’t lost any trees which is wonderful. It also added some security to the lower end of the school, and

because of this Heather was able to let us know that there had been a break-in and some vandalism in the propaga-

tion shed……yes all the seeds we had collected and propagated had been overturned and thrown on the ground! How-

ever, perseverance prevailed and with some dedicated staff, we were able to save a lot and have now got new growth.

So to Heather and Rachel, Angela and Sebastian, the Weightman, O’Loughlin and Allen familes THANKS AGAIN. To

Jill Ramsay, Sally Armstrong, Sandra Embling, David Blackburn, Heather and Rachel and my own family – thanks

for helping out with our little working bee down in the propagation shed! To Scott Matthews, thanks so much for the

brilliant installation of the solar panel on the chook shed roof – which now means that the chook hatch is powered by

the sun rather than having to constantly replace batteries.

Flappy-bird, Chickzilla, Nugget and Brave are very happy to have students back

at school and have some company. MONDAY lunchtimes we will continue to have

our gardening club when activities will be taking place down in the Community

School Garden. All students are welcome! We will continue to have a chook com-

mittee doing crowd control on other days.

Some new green school yard bins will be put out in the schoolyard in coming weeks. These will be for FOOD SCRAPS

ONLY and taken back down to our garden area each afternoon and emptied. If you think you would have 20 minutes

at the end of the day to help with the composting please let me know. I will be looking for adult assistance on:

Monday afternoons

Tuesday afternoons

Wednesday afternoons

Thursday afternoons

Friday afternoons

It would just be a matter of getting out any chook scraps such as bread, greens etc and putting the rest of the scraps

into the compost bins. Toddlers are more than welcome to come down and “assist”.

And remember, all visitors are welcome to come down and enjoy our Community School Garden at anytime – especial-

ly if you have toddlers who want to see the chooks at the end of the day! Spotted marsh frogs have continued to breed

in our gully pond throughout summer and we have a small family of Tawny Frogmouths who have made the area

their home! They are very hard to spot – so keep our eyes open and looking UP!

Finally – if you would be interested in joining our list of families on the chook duty roster please let me know. It’s real-

ly easy!!
