Frozen Berries
Recent advice from the Department of Health and Human Services regarding
frozen berries and Hepatitis A has been well circulated in the media. We are in
receipt of current advice sheets and welcome any questions or concerns
community members may have with regard to this matter. Please contact the
centre for more information.
Building and Redevelopment Works
Planning and costing of works for three projects
currently being undertaken have commenced. The
family centre yard upgrade in partnership with
Wimmera Uniting Care, our Mens Shed upgrade
project in partnership with the Balmoral and District
Angling Club and a partnership project to colocate
Ambulance Victoria onto the Bush Nursing Centre
site has also commenced. Plenty to do at the
moment!
Community Engagement Sub Committee
We are seeking one or two community members to
volunteer some time to sit on one of our
subcommittees that meets four times each year
for approximately one hour. We are seeking
positive, community partnership minded people
who have links to other Balmoral and District organisations that are interested in
having input into how the Bush Nursing Centre partners within and outside of
our community and are prepared to have active input into this. Please contact
me, or alternatively Sabrina Watt at the Centre if you have an interest.

Blood Pressure (high) – Hypertension High blood pressure (hypertension) means that your blood is pumping at a higher pressure than normal through your arteries. This can contribute to a number of diseases including heart disease, kidney failure or stroke. Hypertension usually produces no symptoms. Hereditary factors, obesity, a diet high in salt, smoking and a lack of physical activity can all contribute to hypertension.
Blood pressure readings are a combination of two measurements. These are: Systolic – Is the highest pressure against the arteries as the heart pumps. The normal systolic pressure is usually between 110 and 130mmHg.
Diastolic – is the pressure against the arteries as the heart relaxes and fills with blood. The normal diastolic pressure is usually between 70 and 80mmHg.
Most people with hypertension feel okay!
Hypertension usually does not produce any symptoms, because the organs of the body can resist high blood pressure for a long time. That’s why it’s important to have regular medical examinations to make sure your blood pressure isn’t creeping up as you grow older.
Flu Vax 2015
The Department of Health & Human Services have advised a delay in the delivery of this years Flu Vax stocks. The 2015 dose should be available by late March.
Find us at the Show The BBNC Nurses will be offering free blood pressure and blood sugar checks at the

PLANNED ACTIVITY GROUP news
Volunteers of the month went to Beth and Nancye. They both helped out
over the month of February on a very regular basis, as Heather and I were
coming and going. A very special thank you to Beth and Nancye for their
time and support to the BBNC PAG program.
For the movie afternoon we watched “The Horse Whisperer”. After a
devastating riding accident, a young girl and her beloved horse are both left
with serious physical and emotional scars. This was a long movie, but
everyone enjoyed the story of The Horse Whisperer.
To celebrate Valentine’s Day we made chocolates using different moulds.
Once again under the guidance of Nanyce and Beth. Everyone was able to
go home with a box of homemade Chocolates.
Pancakes were on the menu for the afternoon, we tried different pancake
mixtures and different toppings, this was a fun afternoon with lots to eat
and enjoy.
If you’ve ended up overindulging during the month, don’t despair. Get back on
track and put it down to a great month.
Chinese New Year celebrations recognised this year as the year of the Sheep/
Goat
Goat comes 8th in the Chinese zodiac. The 12 zodiac animals are: Rat, Ox,
Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
According to Chinese astrology, each year (starting from Chinese New Year) is associated with an
animal sign, occurring in a 12-year cycle. For example 2015 is a year of the Goat.
Lucky Colours: brown, red, purple
Lucky Numbers: 2, 7
Lucky Flowers: carnation, primrose
Year of Birth: 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015, 2027
Projects continue at the Men’s Shed each week. The men travelled to Coleraine on the 19th February to
the opening of the new Coleraine’s Men’s Shed building. This was a chance to catch up with other members and to share ideas. After a meal at the Coleraine Hotel it was back to work at Balmoral’s Men’s Shed. Lyn Iredell & Heather Smith

At the Balmoral swimming pool
Sunny weather, crystal clear water and many, many laughs
have all contributed to the success of our swimming program.
We kicked off on the 6th January with the weather being very
kind, had a week off then threw ourselves neck deep into the
water the following week. If you have never been to a water
exercise class, I highly encourage you to do so. Not only will
you receive a great cardio workout, but you might be surprised
by the strength training benefits you can gain from using the
water as resistance. Because of the buoyancy of the water,
working out in the pool provides a perfect medium for those
who must avoid high impact exercise. Water exercises make it
easier for those who suffer from arthritis or for those who find
land-based exercises to be too high impact for their joints.
A few things you may not know about exercising in water……..
Your exercise heart rate will be lower in the water
compared to doing land-based exercises. This effect is due to the buoyancy and cooling effects of the water.
Water aerobics allows for a greater range of motion,
therefore, helping us with flexibility.
Because of the water's natural resistance, it helps us build
greater muscle tone and endurance.
Please contact the Centre for more information on how to join.
Simone Aitken Childcare Team Leader
news EARLY LEARNING CENTRE
We are 5 weeks into our year already! I have been so surprised on how well all the children have
settled in. We have a large number of one and two year olds this year and the care and understanding
they have for each other is fantastic to see.
Children begin to show concern and care towards others -Community
The children have loved exploring our ice and sea
creature tubs. Many children help get the ice out of the
freezer each morning and have made this a part of their
routine to settle in for the day.
Children use effective routines to help make predicted transitions smoothly. –Identity
The children were very eager to help weed the
garden, they all worked cooperatively along side each
other to collect the weeds and put them in the bag. We
even found a few ladybirds!
Children cooperate and collaborate with others. -Wellbeing Children express wonder and interest in their
environment. -Learning
We were absolutely delighted to have some men do
some work on the roads around our centre.
Tractors and machinery is currently a huge interest of
many of the children so it was so terrific to have something so
appropriate come right to our back door! As you could
imagine this sparked lots of conversation around what each
machine does and the sounds they make.
Children can convey and construct messages with purpose and
confidence– Communication
We have also been very busy making our display for the Balmoral show, please keep an eye out
for our display. -Community
I will be taking leave for the month of March and Rebekah will be working as the
Team leader in my absence.
I’m very pleased to say that we only have one afternoon place left on a Monday. If you are
interested in booking your child into care please give me a call on: 0448 980 027.
