FROM THE HEAD FOX
Spring is officially here now – old growth is out and new growth is beginning all over again. I wonder how that relates to our Chapter?
Hmm….
In most other parts of the country “Riding Season” is just beginning. But for us folks here in Southern California – it really never ends.
I can almost see one of those Chapters now – full of members who have stored their bikes for the long winter months …. and finally…. seasons are changing …. and oh oh oh are they aching to ride. I mean they are salivating, dreaming, talking, planning, tak-ing extra blood pressure medication, and anticipating that 1st ride of the season.
Their Chapter holds a planning meeting and wa la (that’s a word somewhere) 50% of the Chapter shows up. Ride ideas are tossed around a mile a minute. Five people trying to talk at the same time. I can even see a couple of heated exchanges ….. “I want to do this ride”….. We did that last year – It’s my turn”. Three hours later ….. after hammer-ing out rides, filling up the calendar (every weekend ) they all depart for home excited to get that 1ST RIDE OF THE SEASON in the books.
Its like being on a strict diet for months and months and finally …. The time has come to SPLURGE. …. a pizza – some sugar – some carbohydrates or pasta – a good ole’ fashioned burger – fries – and shake.
Do you get my drift? These people can’t wait to get on their bikes and … RIDE LIKE THE WIND.
Now for those fortunate ones who have year-round riding (like us) …. who eat pizza… sugar… or burgers (like us) anytime they want – HOW DO YOU GET THEM GUNG HO ABOUT more pizza… more sugar… more burgers?
We have to CREATE IT by … SELF MOTOVATION… a PICK YOURSELF UP and DUST YOURSELF OFF kind of attitude. A self induced mindset that gets you on the road forgetting about the economy, finances, yard work, etc. That Final Frontier - TO GO WHERE NO BIKE HAS GONE BEFORE - or at least the next road that you’ve never been on.
We had one of the largest turnouts that I have seen in a while at our last planning meet-ing . It was so thrilling to see so many people anxious to put their two cents worth in. And what a staff and crew this Chapter has …. All are self-motovating – in fact so much so …. sometimes its hard to keep them reigned in.
YES ….. this Chapter creates it’s own seasons and that my folks – is what keeps us go-ing.
So get out there and RIDE.

Taking the Road Less Travelled On Saturday April 16, I volunteered my time to provide Motor Assist for the Annual Baker to Vegas Challenge Relay Race (visit bakervegas.com for details) , along with most of my teammates on the Gold Angels Drill team. We were also joined by a couple of other Chapter CA1F members and several riders from other chapters. Different groups of runners (in 263 teams from various law enforcement agencies and emergency personnel) started off each hour on the hour from 9am to 5pm, for the first of 20 legs of their 120-mile foot race to Las Vegas.
Providing Motor Assist for the event involved riding up to Baker, CA on Friday, spend-ing the night there, then going to the starting line Saturday morning and acting as a roll-ing traffic cop the entire day. Our job in Motor Assist was to make sure that the runners were kept safe from the starting line until they met up with their personal follow-vehicles about 2 miles down the road, and that passing vehicles only did so in a safe manner.
I gotta tell you… I had a great time, and strongly encourage more of our chapter mem-bers to help out at this event next year if they are able.
But the point of my article this month is about the day after the event. On Sunday morn-ing, as people were deciding which way to head home, two of my fellow CA1F mem-bers asked if I would like to accompany them on more scenic route back to San Diego than just heading down I-15. I’m really glad that I said “Yes” because it was a FAN-TASTIC ride along roads that I had never travelled, and probably would not have done so on my own, for the uncertainty of what I would come across.
Our route home took us from Baker to Kelso through the Mojave National Preserve, where we stopped at the Kelso Train Museum. We then headed south, crossed I-40 and went west along a short stretch of Historic Route 66, and south again toward Twenty-nine Palms. We then went through the Joshua Tree National Forest, and after crossing I-10 we soared through Box Canyon and ended up at the North end of Salton Sea. From there it was familiar territory, going south on CA86 and then west to Borrego Springs, through Santa Ysabel, and home down CA-67.
The ride from Baker to Kelso was so empty and devoid of other traffic, it was a full 25 miles before we saw our first set of opposing headlights… and it was great! In fact, the whole ride was great, and I was glad to have the opportunity to be riding in a group my first time through this unfamiliar territory.
Now that I’ve been on this particular set of “roads less travelled”, I will feel comfortable taking it on my own, or with other riders who wouldn’t take it on their own otherwise. The lesson here: If given the opportunity to take the road less travelled with someone who knows it already, TAKE IT! You will be glad that you did.

April has brought us some great Chapter fun already. I hear Gary Bowers singing debut at the CA-1A’s Rally was something to behold. CA-1L’s Pirate Run always draws a huge crowd to enjoy some of the best Tri-tip in the country, then to top off the month, CA-1Y’s was kind enough donate a set of tires to me at their Duck Run in Lompoc last weekend. Truth be known, I actually won them as the Grand Prize – how cool is that?? There is still a lot more fun ahead, CA-1K & CA-1Q’s shared weekend is just around the corner and they always put on a great show, so get your registrations turned in and get in on some of the fun.
While your planning your Ride Calendar, don’t forget to consider heading out to Pueblo, Colorado for the 2011 Region Rally. I under-stand Anita is planning a “Tribute to the Troops”, so dust off your best patriotic riding duds and head east to some of the most in-credible riding in the country, I hope to see you all there.
Since I’m on the topic of Rally’s & Conventions, if you’ve never thrown an event yourself, you just can’t appreciate all the work that goes into putting one on. It takes weeks, and sometimes months of planning, to pull off a successful event.
Consider the following… As the big day approaches, you work late into the night before the event to ensure everything is ready, then you wake up several times throughout the night because you are too nervous to sleep thinking about all the stuff you still need to do. You’re on pin’s & needle’s until the first guests arrive, then before you know it there are dozen’s of GWRRA members hugging and having a great time talking about the great ride they had get-ting there. That’s when you can finally breath a small sigh of relief.
(Continued on page 9)
9
CDD cont:
At the end of the day, after all the cleanup is done, when you finally go to bed for some much needed sleep, you wake up several times during the night thinking about a dozen things you could have done better, or will do next year.
The most important ingredient to a successful event is the peo-ple. Those that help plan and host the event, and those that ride ½ way across the state to attend are all equally as important. These Rally’s serve several purposes. The obvious one is to raise funds for the Chapters to continue to grow and thrive, but more importantly, the teamwork it takes to put on an event brings the Chapter mem-bers closer together. Lastly, the event gives other Chapters an ex-cuse to go on a ride and enjoy the company of some of the most fun people in the country – California GWRRA members.
So the next time you find yourself considering attending an up-coming Rally, remember back on all the fun you had the last time you attended one, then think about all the hard work that went into put-ting it on, then always remember “you” are the most important ingre-dient to a successful Rally - thank you attending.
Until next time, “Hang on – we’re going for a ride”.

We are looking for a new birthday, and anniversary song. There are a few of you that have volunteered to work on this. As most of you heard last month (Aprils breakfast) my daughter sang hers, with a little dance. Well if that song is to be the choice, I promise you, that you will not be required to dance, just sing the song. So in May we plan on letting some of the other people that have come up with their version. Once every one has sung their song we will choose one, either in May or dur-ing the June gathering. We will give the winner a nice prize (remember you have to sing it to the chapter during the breakfast/meeting). Let me or Dana know if you are interested in participating. I want to thank Carolyn Way for her talent. She is the person that makes each of the birthday, and anniversary cards for us. The cards are hand made and personalized by her, for each individual, each month. She does a great job, so the next time you see her, give her a big thank you. Well I guess that is it for this month. We look forward to seeing you in May at breakfast.. ttfn

The Education Corner
Chapter Educator Mike & Elma Maury
GWRRA’s Rider Education function has been busy. We recently went onto the GWRRA Seminar Presenter web page and found some new and revised materi-als.
New/Revised Seminar Topics include:
Level Up – a presentation on GWRRA’s Levels program
Going, Going, Gone – Trip Planning, Mapping and Packing
Riding with New and/or Inexperienced Riders
Night Riding
Dealing with Different Elements
Co-Rider Seminar
The following material is from the new seminar packet on Dealing with Differ-ent Elements.
When the 2 second rule is not enough
Many of us were taught the 2 second rule in Driver’s Education back in high school. All too often, the part we don’t remember is that it is good up to around 30 mph, after which you should add an extra second for every 10 mph.
http://www.survivalsHYPERLINK "http://www.survivalskills.clara.net/riding_skills_41.htm"kills.clara.net/riding_skills_42HYPERLINK "http://www.survivalskills.clara.net/riding_skills_41.htm".htm
One error that occurs over and over again, even after the dangers are explained, is following the vehicle in front far too closely.
The loss of forward view is another subject altogether.
Common sense and most driving courses say that you should drive at a speed that allows you to stop in the distance you can see to be clear, and at a distance that will allow you to stop if the vehicle in front stops suddenly, and quotes some following distances.
The problem with quoting distances, whether in feet, meters, or car lengths, is that it is almost impossible to visualize these distances.
The rationale of the Two Second Rule is that it stretches following distance as you go faster because it is based on counting seconds.
However, what driving manuals or riding tips fail to make clear is that the Rule is not perfect:
(Continued on page 15)
14
15
CE cont:
it does not emphasize clearly enough that Two Seconds is not a target to aim for - it is a MINIMUM safe distance and should be extended at all times if the traffic conditions allow
it relies on the driver/rider of the following vehicle being alert and on the ball
there is a cross-over point where if the car in front hits a brick wall you could not stop even with a two second gap
You travel 44 ft per sec (f/s) at 30mph. Stopping (reaction and braking) distance at 30mph is quoted in driving manuals as 75ft. In reality a modern bike on de-cent tires can cut several yards from that. We've made two assumptions:
an alert rider can react in around 0.5 second
a motorcycle can pull about 0.9G of braking force
Also, we've ignored wind resistance, the effects of poor road surfaces and all rolling friction. So here are the braking figures:
You can see what is happening - at 60mph, maintaining a 2 second gap, you will crash at walking pace even if you are wide awake and brake as quickly as possi-ble.
Now lets look at the effect of being a bit dopy at the bars - we'll double the reac-tion time to a not unreasonable one second.

CE: cont
The speed of the impact matters little at higher speeds - the important point is that now the cut-off point is actually 45mph - you will crash at walking pace if you are a bit dozy even if you brake as quickly as possible.
Average reaction time for a typical driver is actually slightly longer than 0.5 sec - around 0.7 sec I believe - and considerably longer for someone who is tired, bored or distracted. So even if you are alert, 60mph is the point at which the Two Second Rule should most definitely be stretched, and if you feel the least bit bored or tired, you should open up the gap much earlier. Don't forget, you are probably most at risk on motorways or roads which you drive repetitively!
The new material goes on to discuss pros and cons of the above logic, motor-cycle vs car stopping distances, and the effects of ABS and other systems but the bottom line is that at greater speeds we all need longer safety margins between vehicles. GWRRA has not come out and said that we need more spacing between bikes within our groups. This is because with our staggered and single file formations we have better forward visibility and stopping mar-gins.
Your Seminar Presenters have a lot of new material to study and present, wish us luck.
