CHAPTER DIRECTOR – JOYCE ELMORE

Spring is here and what a busy month it has been!! After the April meeting, a group of us left for Lompoc and their poker run. As most of you have already heard, we had a beautiful ride up on Sat, but we woke up to rain on Sun morning. We still went over to the start of the ride and tried to win some kind of door prizes, but only two of the group won anything. It was really rain-ing and we wanted to get on the road soon so we maybe wouldn't have to ride all the way home in the rain. Well, that just wasn't to be. We left and rode down to Ventura before we had to stop and get warm, we decided to have some lunch, too. By the time I got home it was close to 6pm. What a day, Crystal & Kay were soaked to the skin!! My gloves must have weighed 5lbs apiece. Not a very nice week-end. The next weekend was a visit

with Chapter Q for their chili cook off. It was a bit warm up in the park, so a bunch of us went to Carrows for lunch and to sit in the cool air conditioning. Again we tried to win the big prize, which was $1,000, but no one in Chapter F won any money, just a few door prizes. We took a nice ride home, up and over Ortega Hwy, with a stop at our favorite watering hole in Temecula, Rocky Cola's. Great food and ice cream. Two weekends ago we left McDonald's in Escondido on Fri-day night at 6:30pm, Dave, Dori, Craig, Crystal and me. We went as far as Bakersfield, got to bed around midnight, got up at 5:15 and headed to Merced for Chap-ter 2U's poker run. We got up there around 9am, visited with everyone for about an hour and a half and some of us spent some money. Crystal finally found a rain suit, so now it won't rain anymore. We then took off for the coast, Monterey to be exact. We stopped at Fishermen's Wharf for a little bit of shopping and some lunch and the hit the twisties on Highway 1. What a ride!! I haven't been up that way for quite some time and had for-gotten how beautiful it is. The rolling green hills and all those trees!! The ocean looked very cold, but pretty and we saw lots of sea lions on the beach. So

now it's time to find a place to spend the night, we hadn't made any reservations for Saturday night because we weren't quite sure where we would end up. So David is leading the pack and was thinking we could stop in Santa Barbara, well, he rides right past town and before he knew it we were back on the highway. We stopped in Pismo Beach for gas and inquired at one of the hotels about a room, but none were available. Next stop was San Luis Obispo, after in-quiring at two hotels, no rooms were available, again. So we de-cided to head to Santa Maria, where we might have some luck since it isn't right on the coast. Well, we stopped at the Motel 6, they had 3 rooms left, we only needed two, so we grabbed 'em. We got to sleep in that next morning and had a leisurely ride home. What a great weekend. The weekend of May 1st was the CAN U ride. A whole bunch of us made it to this ride. We left at different times on Fri, our group left McDonald's in Escon-dido around 6:30pm and got into Stateline around midnight. We hit a real cold spot going over the hill before we drop down and can see Stateline from the top of the hill. After a short nights sleep we took off for the first check point, across the highway back into California. It was a long

day, over to Lake Mead, up into Arizona and to St. George, Utah where we stopped for lunch be-fore we hauled butt back to Stateline. We did stop at the Valley of Fire, a beautiful state park east of Las Vegas, very pretty. Not many of us won any of the prizes, but Bob Taylor won the grand prize of $250!!! What a great weekend! We have a great ride coming up the 14th, a small group (so far, small) of us are going up to Marysville for Chapter 2G's Kickoff. If anyone else wants to go, please call either myself or Dave or Dori Dirig. If no one else calls us, we will leave as soon as we are all there. We are taking a day off from work, so we are leaving on Thursday the 13th. That's about all for now. Take care and see you on the road.

A very friendly hello to all of you out there the in M/C world. What a beautiful country we are blessed to live in and enjoy. This was brought home to me recently when we had our last chapter meeting. I think we have finally found a place that is large enough to accept growth and is willing to help us have a great meeting place and good food at a fair price. I only heard positive remarks, and I believe everyone enjoyed the meeting/food. For anyone that missed last month we look forward to seeing you in May.

This past weekend Bob &

Carla, Kay & I, left Friday morn-ing and rode to Primm, Nv. For the CAN-U ride. We had a nice leisurely ride up although we en-

countered rain off and on from Temecula to Victorville. It was not a heavy rain like Lompoc but a drizzle plus the spray from cars & trucks made for a interesting ride, also the higher elevations were chilly. We stopped for 2 hours in Victorville for lunch and let the weather pass before get-ting on the road again. The rest of the chapter arrived later that evening.

The next morning we all

met up at the gas station for the ride, we left with 12 bikes & 16 people. Kay, Rick, Carmen, Rae & Carla remained behind to do whatever it is you do in Whiskey Pete's. Along the way we picked a member of CA1-Z who rode the last half with us. The total ride was about 355 miles and through some very pretty coun-try. I found out some of our long time members had never been through this part of the country before so it was a nice scenic trip for them. We arrived back at Primm about ½ hour before the check point closed and freshen up and got back in time for the drawing and awards. The chap-

8

ter tied for 2nd place with the most registered members, CA1-Q took 1st place. We only needed 6 members to beat them out, maybe next time we can take 1st place. A couple of members won some prizes.

Kay & I, Bob & Carla

headed out a little earlier than the rest of the group so we could have a leisurely ride back. The rest of the group left about 1/2 hour later. We stopped at Tom’s Farm and snacked on a fresh loaf of French bread and cheese while sitting on the grass and watching Harleys and old cars come and go. They had a craft fair going

on, and the place was crowed. It was a nice break, and while we were there the rest of the group passed us by, and when we got to Rocky’s they were already there. We finished the weekend with ice cream and a staff meeting and then headed for home.

Remember, ride hard,

ride safe and enjoy life to its full-est every single day.

Cross winds -- man they used to really scare me! Dori and I would be riding along and it would get gusty -- we'd slow down and ride it out -- weaving in our lane (mostly) and slowing down if it got too windy. That was no good -- traffic comes up behind us, we're not stable -- it just wasn't safe all around. I'm sure a number of people have felt the same. What do you do? Wait until the wind stops? If you're going cross-country, this isn't an option. If you wait for the wind to die down or for it to stop raining, you'll never make it out of California, let alone make it across the U.S.! We had to come up with a solution before our big trip last summer or we'd never make it across the South-western states. We were talking about this one

day with Jim Waddell, and he pointed out that riding in cross winds is simply another exercise in counter-steering. Slowing down never helped; it made a difference psychologically, but the wind still blows you all over the road. What we needed to do was find a way to counter the wind effects on the line the bike tracks down the road so as to maintain a straight line regard-less of speed and wind direction. You can't 'lean' quick enough to make up for a gusting 20 mph wind, but you can push on the handlebars that quick. Counter-steering was the answer. We tooled across Oklahoma (ya know 'where the winds blow') with not a moments hesitation. I think we spent more time in that state at a 45 degree angle then we did straight up. I wanted to make sure the tires weren't worn on one side once we got to St. Louis. It was quite exciting at times; pulling a trailer, passing an 18-wheeler highway speeds with a stiff and gusting right to left cross wind. I got a kick out of seeing Dori all canted over be-hind me on her GL1100. Quite a sight!

CHAPTER EDUCATORS – DAVID & DORI DIRIG

When the wind blows from the side, counter steer into it. In the same way that you push left to go left, if you have a cross wind from the left, you want to push on the left bar and counter-steer into the wind to maintain a straight line. This is not a sud-den extreme 'push-push' as counter-steering to avoid an ob-stacle, but a continuous pressure on the handlebar that the wind is blowing from. This will lean you into the wind to counter the wind's push and maintain your straight line down the road. When the wind blows harder, it takes a little more pressure on the bar on the side that the wind is coming from. One key point is to worry about the path you're taking down the road, not the an-gle that the bike is at. Just let the bike lean and only worry about the path you're taking down the road and the amount of pressure on the handlebars to maintain that path. If the wind is gusty or you come under an underpass or pass an 18-wheeler on the lee side, that pressure will have to change with the wind conditions, so stay alert. With a little prac-

tice, you'll be sailing that bike down the road like the best of them. Its not easy riding in a gusty cross wind, but it is not impossi-bly difficult either. It is simply a matter of knowledge, education, and experience. (what part of motorcycling is not?! ;-) So the next time the winds pick up, try a little counter-steering before you get off the gas and/or call it a day. For more information on riding in the wind, check out Motorcycle Consumer News, May 1999, Page 39. Feel free to contact Dori and I if you have further questions; remember the only bad question is the one that goes un-asked. As always, Ride Safe and COAST (Concentrate On A Safe Trip)

Spring is upon us! The weather is getting gorgeous. Its time to RIDE, RIDE, RIDE. But before we all saddle up, let’s cover an important safety tip; COMMU-NICATION! When we ride in groups, commu-nication is an important part of our overall group safety. How do we make sure we have good communication within the group? 1. Having a good working CB

radio 2. Knowing what CB channels

are being used by the group. 3. Keeping the CB channels

clear. 4. Transmitting in a calm clear

even voice. 5. Knowing the protocols when

a rider goes down. 6. Pay attention during Riders

Meetings. 1. A good working radio. This includes the radio, and every

thing that plugs into that radio. Does the push to talk switch function properly? Has contact cleaner ever been sprayed into it? Are all the connections clean and tight? Does your head set work properly? Is you antenna “matched” to your radio? This matching is done with an SWR meter. A good antenna match is crucial to the performance of your radio. The factory and the dealer do not do this . It is up to you to do this or have it done. We are lucky, we have people in our chapter that know how to do this, and if asked, they will probably be glad to help. 2. Know what channels are being used. What is the primary CB channel? What is the secon-dary ? This is always covered in the Riders Meeting. When we need to switch to the alternate channel, it is never called for by number. We do this so the “traffic” on the primary does not follow us. 3. Keeping the CB channel clear. This doesn’t mean you can’t speak up when you have some-thing to say. What I mean is, in traffic situations the “front door” and “back door” of each group need 100% access the CB chan-nel. Important safety/traffic in-

13

formation is relayed to each of them and other members of the group hear too. Remember, your groups back door knows more about current group, and traffic conditions than any other mem-ber of the group. And is the ONLY Rider that should be call-ing the shots! (sometimes there are exceptions.) 4. Speak in a calm and even voice. Contrary to popular be-lief, shouting into your micro-phone will not help in getting you heard any better, this has to do with what is called “over modulation” or distortion. The quality of your mic., and the clear slow even enunciation is heard by all listening. Also re-member, Panic in your voice will instill panic in the mind of your listeners. It may also take their mind off what they need to be doing and cause a major safety hazard. 5. Know the Protocol when a bike/rider goes down. This is VERY, VERY, IMPORTANT!! That persons life may depend on it. Your life may depend on it. My life may depend on it. Hell, LIVES DEPEND ON IT!!! Our Chapter Educator, the learned Dr. Dave Dirig, wrote a very informative safety article about this in the April 1999 news letter.

6. PAY ATTENTION at the Rid-ers Meeting. This is not the time to chat among yourselves, it is a time to listen. This is the time that all information is given out. I.e., the directions to our destina-tion, CB channels, safety as-pects of group riding and how we do it is being given as well as the front and back doors and number in each group are chosen. I know we have all heard this be-fore, but this is vitally important information. The new rider to our group needs to hear this in-formation. So please be courte-ous and just pay attention. Hopefully this will be of help on your next group ride. So, until our next group riding seminar this is all I have to COMMUNI-CATE. I hope all of my Chapter family has the safest rides they can. And knowing a little bit more makes it that much safer. The more you know, the better it gets. Until next time, The lane is secure, do your head check, bring it over as a group!

It's been a week since we re-turned from our District Cruise and what a time it was. I com-mented to Fay that I thought that was the best cruise we've been on. I think that was our sixth one. Some were three day, some seven day and one was a ten day cruise. Part of what made this one so special is we had two of our sons and their wives with us. Then there was our special GWRRA friends. The food was special and so was the service. The other passengers were also very nice and as far as I could tell everyone had a great time. I don't think we'll have another one next year but we are looking into the possibility of a cruise where we can take our motorcy-cles aboard. I envision cruising out of a port in the area of Van-couver and go to Prince Rupert or points north. Then everyone can take off and head to their fa-

vorite destinations. It's just a thought right now but we'll check it out and let you know what falls out of the hopper. Let us know if you would participate in an ex-cursion like this. The new District Logo will soon be an item that will be available in the District and Chapter stores. As you know we had two to se-lect from and the winner is Logo number 1. From the outset of the voting this logo stayed ahead by a margin of 31. The person that did the final artwork was Patrick Dolan from CA1Z. Thanks Pat-rick. The District Rally is coming along fine. The DoubleTree has just reported to me that reserva-tions are far better than they ex-pected. They are not used to a group that make reservations early. Don't get left out. Make your reservations now before they are all gone. Vendors are already sending in their reserva-tions for space. We'll have some unique seminars for you this year. So make your room reser-vations and send in your Rally registrations. Just remember............. IT DOESN'T GET ANY BET-TER THAN THIS!

CANU– 2U

4 states and 1924 miles in 9 days..... oh yeah and 5 work days in there somewhere. With finally having a few weekends off, Dori and I capitalized on the time and went to CA-2U's ride and then to CANU this past weekend. Of course, we rode ourselves into an oil change in the span of 9 days, but that's the price of doing busi-ness. Dori, Joyce Elmore, and Craig and Crystal Rush all took off two weeks ago Friday after work for Bakersfield with the plan being to head for Merced on Saturday. Actually, we would head for Merced and then turn left for Monterey and then on to Santa Maria by way of Hwy 1. Give credit to this crew; we were all on our bikes pulling out of the parking lot Saturday AM at 5:55am, a full five minutes ahead of schedule. On to Merced we went to support their ride. It was

quite a dilemma whether to fol-low CA-2U's lead and head for the Sierra's or head for the coast. The lure of 90+ miles of twisties was too strong, so after an hour or so of socializing, doughnuts, and coffee, we mounted up and headed for Monterey. Beautiful ride along 152 around the San Luis Reservoir until we got to 101 and dealt with traffic in Monterey. It was worth the work as we rewarded ourselves with clam chowder and a little shop-ping at Fisherman's Wharf. Funny story -- the booth atten-dant at the wharf assured us that there was motorcycle parking, but it turned out to be a single RV slot with a motorcycle sign over it. We managed to get all 5 bikes into this space, but one crotch-rocket could have parked us all in. All's well that ends well, and they only charged us 2 bucks for all five bikes. We managed to get the ladies back to

Taking it easy somewhere on the California coast...

16

CANU– 2U CONTINUED

the bikes without this degenerat-ing into an all day shopping trip, but it was a close call ;-) The Maritime Museum looked inter-esting and the Aquarium is great. Monterey in itself deserves a weekend, but we could only af-ford a couple hours.....the twisties were calling!! Hwy 1 here we come!! The most beautiful sign I've ever seen; "Dangerous Curves, next 74 miles!!" And the rest of the day was spent tearing through the curves and reducing the clear-ance of our foot pegs. What a group! It got kind of exciting at times with the cross winds com-ing off the ocean, no guard rails, and one lane retro-fitted bridges, but we had a blast!! The weather was perfect, and there was mini-mal traffic which was conscien-tious (for the most part) and let us by at the various turn outs. We did have one kid in a pick-up truck who thought he could out run us, but after he crossed the centerline coming around a turn, he couldn't find a pull out fast enough. The group almost lost its leader at one point when an RV came around a blind turn "sharing" my lane. I thought I was gonna get Winebago stamped on my forehead, but I managed to find enough road to

avoid becoming a hood ornament and call a warning back to the group. Chalk one up for always using a delayed-apex curve method! Dori (who was in the 2nd position) commented on how scary it was as she dodged out of the way....She should have seen it from a little closer!!! pant pant pant......... About this time we saw a sign that warned about more twisty roads. We were dis-cussing how we had been on twisties for the past 30 miles and how it was strange to see that sign when I hit the first 15mph hair-pin turn. I swear I could read my own license plate!! The sign was not in error, and boy-howdy did we test our riding ability from there on out. We stopped near San Simeon for cof-fee and a photo-op, and then it was back on the road (gas was 2.74/gal!!!). After a gas stop in Pismo Beach, we headed on to Santa Maria where we ended up staying in the Motel 6 right be-hind where District Rally was 2 years ago. After dinner and a good night's sleep, we were back on the road on Sunday (again 5 minutes ahead of schedule...what a crew!). Sunday was an un-eventful ride down 101 to get home by early afternoon. Of course there was the requisite stop for ice cream at Rocky

CANU– 2U CONTINUED

Cola's in Temecula. 999 miles over 2 1/2 days by Dori's trip odometer. What a great ride!! Hwy 1 is fantastic, but its not for the faint of heart; beautiful views but some killer twisties. When can we go again guys!!?? CANU was the following week-end. We took off Friday after work (8 bikes), and another 6 bikes met us in Primm, NV. We ended up having 21 people regis-tered for the ride, which was a tie with a Utah chapter for second place, with only CA-1Q having more people there. It was a cold but dry ride coming over from San Diego on Friday night. Sat-urday was another 300+ miles as we headed out through the twisties around Lake Meade and through Valley of Fire before jumping on 15N through the Vir-gin River Valley and heading for St. George, UT. Back through the valley once more for good measure (beautiful views and fantastic sweepers!!) before heading back to the casino. I'm not sure who won what, but Bob Taylor rode his new Venture and was rewarded by winning quite a bit of cash in the 50/50. Sunday was exciting at times as we bat-tled the traffic heading east out of Vegas, but by the time we got back to Victorville, we had more

lanes to work with, and it was an uneventful ride all the way back to...yes...you guessed it. Rocky Cola's for more ice cream!!! An-other 925 miles door-to-door for Dori and I. What a great time; quite a contrast to spend one whole weekend in the twisties along the coast and another on highways blasting across the de-sert. A grand old time we had; but now I need to get off the computer and dig up some new oil filters. When can we go again guys!!?? One weekend ac-tually spent here in town <gasp>, and then we're off for CA-2G's kickoff on May 15th!!

The CANU Ride was lots of fun this year. The weather

turned out to be FANTASTIC and the scenery was just as nice. For those who haven’t seem some of the back coun-

try of Nevada, here is a taste of what it’s like.

29

PHOTO ALBUM – LOMPOC RAIN RIDE

The ride back from Lompoc was NOT fun. Most of us looked like drowned rats, as you can see by the pictures below. The good news is that we all made it home safe.
