My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life MCA/Nashville VP/Promotion Van Haze discusses his most important songs, artists or concerts: 1. B.B. King and Bobby “Blue” Bland, Together For The First Time ... Live!: Growing up in Mississippi, I was always around the blues. This was the first tape I ever bought, and I just wore the thing out. The preaching, the music—it’s just electric. You feel like you are sitting in the audience.

2. Son Volt and Blue Mountain at Jackson, MS’s Hal and Mal’s: It wasn’t my first concert, but it was the first time I got into a bar with a fake ID, drank beer, and saw two bands that I loved play together. It may have been the best night in my hazy teenage years.3. Ray LaMontagne: He’s my default music. When I get tired of what’s on my iPod I just select Ray and hit shuffle.4. Josh Kelley For the Ride Home: I love Josh Kelley, and this was his first album. I’ve been a fan ever since.5. B.B. King, Nashville: My wife and I saw him on his 84th birthday. I’ve never seen anything like it. He still kills it. • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Pink Floyd, The Wall.•An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: I don’t get a lot of stuff, but I really like almost all kinds of music. If it has a good beat, I like it. • An album you played or listened to incessantly: John Mayer, Heavier Things.•One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Mood Ring” by Wade Bowen.

two from the round tables that adds another piece to the puzzle. This year we’re adding a third station, newly acquired WDZQ/Decatur, to our event. Adding more members to our Neuhoff St. Jude family is always exciting. “There were some suggestions on what to put on Facebook and how important it is to keep that updated throughout the radiothon,” Marsh continues. “Also, someone came up with

Country Still Cares (continued from page 1) Not surprisingly, the children made the strongest impression. WCTQ/Sarasota PD Heidi Decker was one of several who recounted seeing young patient Ellen singing “Over The Rainbow” for attendees. “Seeing her fussing with her little brother and fearlessly singing in front of a room of strangers, all while fighting for her life ... I get choked up now just remembering it,” Decker says. “If our listeners saw just that one moment alone, they wouldn’t want to wait for the radiothon to become a Partner in Hope.” The motivation found in the stories of families healed and the work left to be done is supplemented by the exchange of information stations can use to improve their fundraising efforts. “Our station has been doing radiothons since the beginning and have raised the bulk of our money in the last 10 years, primarily because of things we’ve learned at these seminars,” Marsh says. “Our team members and I always come away with a nugget or

Side Note: St. Jude has pledged its support for relief efforts in Haiti. A statement from the hospital says in part, “[We are] coordinating with regional and international aid organizations to provide support for Haitian pediatric cancer patients and others with catastrophic diseases within our expertise. In addition, through our International Outreach Program, our physicians will be available to consult on cases that may arrive at any hospital in the world and we have offered to provide medicines and supplies as our resources allow.” CAC

a great idea of using bank signs to promote our radiothon and ‘hope’ number during the event.” Several programmers also cited a presentation by Country Aircheck’s Lon Helton analyzing radiothon impact on PPM ratings. (The presentation is a continuation of the “Radiothon Rebound” story in our September ‘09 print edition.) “Intellectually, we have always known that there will be some tune-out during radiothons,” KSON/San Diego PD John Marks says. “When you see it graphically, it initially creates some knee jerk reactions. But I don’t worry so much about the mechanics of the PPM on radiothon days. “Our motto is that ‘you can never go wrong by being nice to somebody,’” Marks continues. “I regard projects like St. Jude and other worthwhile charities as our responsibility to support. Our listeners appreciate that we use our power and influence for something other than jamming spots down their throats. And if they do tune out, I know they’ll be back knowing that we dedicated ourselves to a greater good.” “Lon’s PPM presentation was exceptional and diminished, somewhat, the concern I had about a radiothon in the PPM world,” WGH-FM/Norfolk PD John Shomby agrees. “Don’t worry about PPM and your radiothon. What you lose you will get back fairly quickly.” But the weekend’s information, good as it may be, is dwarfed by its emotion. “It’s not what I take away that matters,” Marks says. “It what I’m reminded of. I’m reminded that I have a great life with friends and family who are happy and healthy. And I love to see the result of ours and many, many others’ good work with St. Jude.”

Here is the second installment of Fall 2009 diary Arbitron ratings results. We re-cap the markets as they come in each day in Country Aircheck Today, and provide this weekly overview of how Country stations have fared. As part of our weekly market-by-market offerings, with a few exceptions, only stations achieving at least a 1.0 share are included. Legend: A “+” indcates a Classic Country outlet, a “^” designates Country stations in the same market owned by a single operator and a “t” indicates a tie. A “NA” indicates a subscriber-only market, where rankings are not available.
