Welcome to our 3rd issue for 2011. this issue is especially dedicated to Berjaya Corporation Bhd for its continuous support towards the National

Kidney Foundation of Malaysia. In this issue, you will read how Berjaya Corporation Bhd helped us to raise

rM 170,000 which we used to renovate and develop the “NKF-Berjaya resource Centre”, for our patients. Its subsidiary, singer Malaysia, also raised another rM 52,000 to help us manage the resource centre for another 2 years. We highlighted all the activities being carried out in our resource centre and we hope our patients will take the opportunity to participate in the many interesting activities being organised for them.

We are also proud to share with you a story about our 101 year old patient who currently seeks dialysis treatment in our dialysis centre in Kluang. We wish him many more good years ahead.

Congratulations to our NKF - lions Club, alor setar dialysis centre for receiving the “Best Centre award” for 2010/2011. You may read further about the judging criteria and the other winners, on page 4.

Please also read about our organ transplant patient and how the kidney transplant changed her whole life. We hope this article will inspire our patients who wish to go for kidney transplantation in the future.

our sincere appreciation also goes out to Yang amat Berhormat tuan Guru dato’ Bentara setia Hj. Nik abdul aziz Bin Hj Nik Mat, the Menteri Besar of Kelantan for gracing our “9th Patient Forum” in Kota Bharu recently. It was a successful event with over 300 participants. the forum was aimed at providing information on financial assistance for those on dialysis as well as job opportunities for those dialysis patients able to work.

We take this opportunity to thank each and every donor. You contribution will certainly help us to help Malaysians suffering from end stage kidney failure, who lack access to or cannot afford dialysis treatment. Currently, NKF has more than 1,445 patients receiving subsidized dialysis treatment in 24 dialysis centres nationwide.

Happy reading

The average life expectancy of a Malaysian man is that of 72 years, whereas a woman is about 76 years old. However we

are fortunate, that in NKF we have a patient who is 101 years old. Mr Chaw Kang Hoo begun his dialysis treatment with NKF on the 16th of May 2006.

Kang Hoo has always been a patient of NKF, since he began his treatment. Kang Hoo now resides in Kluang, Johor with his son. that is not his only child, as Kang Hoo has another 4 sons as well as 2 daughters.

Judging by how exhausting and time consuming a dialysis treatment can get, just like any other patients of dialysis, Kang Hoo was forced to leave his job as a labourer. He was 70 when he chose to retire. the main reason was that of kidney failure.

He seems very happy and at ease with NKF and the way the medical staff have been treating him all these while. the local committee also have been giving him a pleasant time, which makes his sessions at NKF much more tolerable. all these may seem irrelevant to us who are not dialysis patients, but to a patient who is going through dialysis treatment, good service from staff is crucial.

Kang Hoo loves his own home in Kg.Paya, Kluang, Johor. Many times, his children have proposed for him to reside with them, but alas, he refuses. to him, no other place is like his very own home.

due to this, his children will normally take turns to send him off for his dialysis treatment at the Che luan Khor-NKF dialysis Centre, Kluang.

His children consider themselves honoured to be serving their father in times such as this. they admit that during his younger days, their father has always been a very hardworking man. though just a labourer, he managed to successfully bring up 7 of his children. In return for his sacrifice to his children all these while, when tragedy hit and Kang Hoo is required to undergo dialysis treatment, his children are more than willing to tend to the wellbeing of their father.

We hope that the dialysis treatment will be easy on Kang Hoo, and that he will be able to lead a happy and normal life.

We wish Mr Chaw Kang Hoo all the best and may he have many more good years ahead of him.

NKF Northern Branch held its inaugural health screening and kidney awareness programme for the rural community

at Pematang damar laut, Batu Maung, Penang recently. the experience of conducting a health program for the local community was different compared to the urbanites.

Unlike the city dwellers, who usually come very early whenever we had our health screening activities, the rural community was more laid back and each of them took their own time to come by. However, that did not deter us from providing our service.

We started off at 9.00am with the Children’s Coloring Contest and by 9.30am more villagers were stopping by for their screening. The program was officially launched by YB Tuan Abdul Malik kassim, ADUN for Batu Maung & State Executive Councillor, Chairman of Religious Affairs, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs. Dr Anita Bhajan, our newly elected Vice-Chairman was also there to unveil the “Love our kidneys” Message card with YB Tuan Abdul Malik kassim.

dato’ dr rozina Ghazalli, senior Consultant Nephrologist with Hospital Pulau Pinang shared her vast knowledge and experience in managing Chronic Kidney disease (CKd) with the community. all those present

benefited from her sharing and found the information useful.

to add to the excitement, the branch arranged for a “kerabu Preparation Contest” with the theme of “kurang Gula Dan Garam, Tapi Masih Sedap”. In total, 12 contestants participated with 2 male contestants emerging as the 2nd and 3rd winner. a talented lady chef emerged as the Champion after our 3 top chefs from the Chef association of Malaysia; Penang Chapter gave their final verdict. Chef thomas see, the Chief Judge mentioned that each of the Kerabu were unique in taste as there were no limitations on ingredients used. It had been a difficult choice but based on the requirement theme, they finally decided on the champion chef.

the program ended at 1pm and indeed it was a fruitful day.

The scene at the recent Kidney Care awareness Program at Pekan darat, seberang Prai Utara was almost serene when

our team of health screening volunteers arrived. the only sound we heard were probably the chicks and geese walking on the village site compound. en salehin, the coordinator for the program arrived shortly with his team. all of us started to get busy with the setting up and within 30 minutes, a group of young kids started to arrive.

the enthusiastic kids were all anxiously waiting as we set up the health screening and games counters. they were all there for the Coloring Contest which was due at 9am. By then, several villagers had already come by for the health screening. the crowd started to peak after 10.30am with more villagers dropping by after their morning breakfast and marketing sessions. By then, the children's coloring session had ended and sr tan lay ai was seen sharing

PROGRAm PENjAGAAN BuAH PiNGGANG,PEKAN DARAt, sPu, 24 juLY 2011

some tips and word of advice to the young ones and also their parents on looking after their kidneys well.

the kids indeed listened and understood what was being mentioned by sr tan as right after the session, we conducted some educational games with them such as the "Kidney alert snake and ladder" game and "throw away the symptoms Game" and they were able to answer the questions without any hesitation! Mission accomplished!

For the health screening, we managed to screen around 66 villagers. though the number wasn’t that significant but we are glad we were able to play our role to detect and prevent more kidney disease in this society. We finished off the session with 15 lucky draw items for the participants who had came by for our health screening. By 1pm, we were all packed up and having our kampung lunch!

When lim Chu ee was 10 years old, she suffered a viral fever, which left her weak and unable to lead a normal life. little did

she realise that it would be a life changing experience. enrolled into a Chinese school, and enjoying her life as a school girl, with many friends and a happy family, it was an earth shattering experience to be informed by her doctor that her kidneys had failed as a result of the illness.

referred to Hospital Kuala lumpur (HKl), she became a patient with HKl, attached to the Paediatric Nephrology department where she underwent training for Continuous ambulatory Peritoneal dialysis (CaPd). However, it was a difficult time, coping with school work and at the same time being on dialysis, before school, after school, after homework in the evening and at night before lim went to sleep, in all 4 times daily.

at the same time she filled in the form for an organ transplant and was put on the waiting list. Her family, ever ready to help, underwent the test for compatibility for a transplant but none was successful. Her siblings were too young at the time and so lim shouldered on, waiting and hoping something would happen to change her life.

out of the blue in 1996, her parents received a phone call requesting them to make a trip to Kl as a child had died and the parents were willing to donate her kidneys. lim and her parents made the journey, hoping for good news and they were not disappointed. lim was one of the lucky recipients and the other kidney went to another school girl, known only to lim as ‘Haslina’.

they became good friends over the 3 months hospitalised in HKl.

today, at 26 years old, lim is happily married and four months pregnant with her first child, radiant and enjoying the experience. accompanied by her husband, Wong tian Goey, 30 years, lim attends regular check-ups and takes care of her health. lim is grateful to her donor but said that she was not aware who her donor was until she was shown an article in Utusan Malaysia, published in 1998. only then she knew her donor was a 2 year old child.

“the transplant changed my whole life, for the better. I could lead a normal life, have friends, go to school and my family was not worried about me anymore. My ambition was to be a teacher and I did have some temporary teaching jobs but with nothing permanent

I decided to be a tuition teacher,” said lim, who now resides in Gua Musang, Kelantan with her husband.

With ten students, lim feels fulfilled and together with her husband, can look forward to the birth of her baby. However, lim is aware that there are many dialysis patients who are not as lucky as her. Many children have been on the waiting list for years with no hope unless donors come forward.

“I am one of the lucky ones, without the donation of the kidney, I would not have been able to lead the life I have now," said lim,

while waiting for her check-up at HKl. she hoped others will come forward and donate their organs and make a difference in the lives of dialysis patients, especially children.

Petaling Jaya, 29th July 2011 – National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF) is one step closer to achieving its vision of

becoming a National resource Centre in the prevention and treatment of kidney disease with the opening of NKF-Berjaya resource Centre. the resource Centre, located within walking distance from Pusat dialisis NKF – dato’ dr sreenevasan dialysis centre, in Petaling Jaya, will provide information on kidney care and kidney disease to patients, their families and healthcare professionals.

the resource Centre, made possible with sponsorship amounting to rM 170,000 from Berjaya Cares Foundation was launched by Mr tan U-Ming, executive director of 7-eleven (Malaysia) sdn Bhd and son of Berjaya’s founder, tan sri dato’ seri vincent tan Chee Yioun.

“We are proud to partner up with NKF in order to establish the NKF-Berjaya resource Centre. research has shown that sedentary lifestyle and poor food choice among Malaysians have increased the risk of many non-communicable diseases, including kidney disease. In line with our corporate social responsibility motto “Building Communities, Enriching Lives”, we hope to play a part by assisting the NKF in supporting their efforts toward containing and reversing this worrying health trend.” said Mr tan U-Ming.

also present at the launch was Mr Yeap dein Wah, Managing director of singer (M) sdn Bhd who presented a mock cheque of rM52,000 in support of 2 years’ operational expenses for the NKF-Berjaya resource Centre.

Currently equipped with reading materials on kidney and kidney related diseases health magazines and educational videos and newsletters, the resource Centre will act as a focal point for all kidney patients, their family members

or caregivers and students to obtain and access information related to kidney and kidney related diseases.

For the benefit of those visiting the resource Centre, educational kidney health posters and pamphlets are displayed as a source of information on signs, symptoms of kidney disease, prevention of kidney disease, dietary guidelines, the effects of diabetes and high blood pressure in the long term on the kidneys.

For those patients in need of a meeting place for their patient support group and other related activities, the resource Centre provides an ideal location as well as a centre of relaxation with a massage chair, tv and dvd player as well as computers on which to surf the Internet.

the resource Centre has organized a series of activities such as kidney health talks, patchwork workshops on producing aprons, tea-towels, attractive bags and other saleable items, from which dialysis patients can derive an income.

Mr Chua Hong Wee, Chief executive officer – (NKF), said providing affordable dialysis is just one aspect of NKF’s work. the emphasis is also to provide emotional support and guidance to dialysis patients so they can lead productive lives with their families.

With more than 24,000 dialysis patients nationwide and the numbers growing annually, it has become important to reach out and educate them on various aspects of the disease as well as leading a better quality of life through part-time incomes.

With time, counselling would be incorporated as part of the services of the resource Centre for the benefit of dialysis patients, their family members and caregivers.

“Counselling is an important aspect of rehabilitation as dialysis has an impact on the emotional and psychological make-up of the dialysis patient,” emphasized Chua, who hoped the resource Centre would attract those in the high risk groups for Chronic Kidney disease (CKd), kidney patients, students above 13 years and also

journalists to access the facilities of the resource Centre.

Chong on dialysis for the

past three years, is a

subject of much concern

by our dialysis centre

manager. as a patient, Chong’s disposition displays many symptoms

of excessive fluid intake, with swollen feet, bloated face and while

walking to his dialysis chair, appeared to be short of breath.

Ms sharleen lee, Head of department for Public education, NKF

said the project was on going since 2009, with Monash University,

sunway Campus, as a community based project related to health

promotion research. she felt one of the areas which required

educating patients was fluid intake as many problems controlling

their fluids, especially water. this had an impact, not only on dialysis

outcomes, but also on mortality rates of dialysis patients, where

many had died due to complications derived from fluid control.

thus, the project by five second year medical students from Monash

University, suebsakul Pripanapong, Manpreet Kaur, rahael alia, Joe

Wei and raevin Kumar was timely, “Effectiveness of Educational

Intervention on Compliance of Recommended fluid Intake”.

to make the message more effective, a health talk titled “Control

of fluid and Sodium Intake” by Halimah Ismail, Dietician, was

conducted to educate patients on how to control their daily fluid

intake by measurement of water intake with the use of measuring

jugs and even ice cubes when thirsty.

“High sodium foods are mostly processed and

preserved such as sausages, seasonings and

sauces, prawn paste and belacan and also western

food such as fried chicken, nuggets, burgers and

also frankfurters ,” said Halimah.

these foods have a high amount of sodium and as

a result water is consumed to satisfy the feeling of

thirst experienced by dialysis patients. Unfortunately, said

Halimah, the result, over consumption of water to the detriment

of patients, who can then become hypertensive or worse, water in

the lungs and heart.

the project involved selected dialysis patients from NKF centres in

the Klang valley, who were required to fill in questionnaires prepared

by the five students related to their fluid intake.

the questionnaires were required to be filled in both before and after

the talk on fluid intake in order to gauge whether the understanding

and compliance of the dialysis patients had increased after the

talk. after two weeks, the students would meet the patients in the

dialysis centre to discuss fluid compliance.

after this, dr Kyi Kyi tha, senior lecturer in Pharmacology from

the school of Medicine and Health sciences, Monash University,

sunway Campus and supervisor for the students, said the

questionnaires would be compiled and assessed for the final report

by the students.

dr Kyi said overall the whole project was to highlight to patients

the importance of controlling fluid intake and this is judged by the

weight of the dialysis patient taken both before and after dialysis,

as recorded by the dialysis centre. this interdialytic weight as it is

known should not exceed a safe range 2.0-2.5kg.
