NKF DIALYSIS CENTRES TEL NO

Greetings from the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia.

With the passing of time, we had celebrated the New Year for 2016 and had ushered in the year of the monkey for the 2016 Lunar New Year.

A good news for us at NKF is that we had seen and experienced the continued inflow of donations to assist us in the provision of dialysis treatment to poor patients.

Such funding in particular is with regard to the presentation of dialysis machines or even a dialyzer re-processor as disclosed by the articles within this newsletter. This has fortified our fundraising efforts and we continue to leave no stone unturned in the quest for sources for funding from the resilient establishments within the corporate sector in the light of the prevailing far from rosy economic situation.

We had been also truly blessed that at this time of belt-tightening there were indeed individuals who continued to provide financial support monthly out of their desire that fellow human beings should not be deprived of their critical medical needs.

With this assurance of sustainability in funds, we were confident to carry on with the extension of our health screening to cover the states of Johor, Malacca and Negri Sembilan from our newly established regional office in Batu Pahat under our Public Education Department.

We are proceeding with our plans to host the World Kidney Day Celebrations in March 2016, Patient Forum in April, 3rd Renal Nutrition Seminar in June and Annual Dialysis Meeting (ADM) in November.

More will be disclosed of these forums in subsequent issues of the newsletter.

Until then, have a nice time reading!

Cheers.

RESILIENCE TO LIVE ON

WELFARE TRAINING DIET EDUCATION EVENTS FUNDRAISING

Life has the tendency to throw curve balls at us. Such is the case for 44-year-old Chang Siew Keun, who continues to remain resilient, even after many life-changing challenges which started early in her life.

Poverty forced her to drop out of school in Form Two. Even so, this did not stop her from living a fullling life. She took up sewing to support her family, and later married; she now has two sons aged 10+ and 17+.

Siew Keun also suffers from multiple health complications related to hypertension, high uric acid and obesity. She was diagnosed with advanced chronic kidney disease approaching end stage renal failure in October 2012 and haemodialysis was initiated in December 2012 at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. She was admitted to Pusat Dialisis NKF - Good Health, Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur on 3 May 2013. She has been on NKF’s Hardcore Poor subsidy since her admission. Her Ministry of Health subsidy was approved on 1 April 2014. NKF also provides her with Transport Subsidy to ensure that she reaches the centre on time for her dialysis treatment 3 times a week.

Siew Keun had to give up her job as a seamstress as she found herself getting tired easily and could no longer commit to work hours with her frequent treatment. She found even simple household chores like cleaning and laundry strenuous. Her elder son is hyperactive and has problems getting gainful employment.

“I’m not proud to be dependent on charity for my dialysis, but for now, I just think of living from day-to-day,” says Siew Keun. “I look forward to my children growing up healthy and having good jobs.”

Kidney transplant can be a long-term solution for many kidney patients. Unfortunately, 19,474 people are currently on the waiting list for a kidney transplant with the number of kidney failure patients increasing every year. In comparison, less than 1% of Malaysians have registered as organ donors as of July 2015, pointing to a severe shortage in the gift of life for many end-stage organ failure patients.

For many of these patients, organ donation remains their last chance of survival but unfortunately, the limited availability of organ donors and misconceptions about organ donation have made nding suitable donors difcult.

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of Malaysia has launched an organ donation promotion unit at Sunway Pyramid with the support of Sunway Group,

Members of the public can also call up the National Transplant Resource Centre (NTRC) for more information or to pledge their organs. The NTRC can be reached by calling 03 – 2681 0681/2, Toll Free: 1800-88-9080 or e-mail [email protected].

NKF Worked With IJM Corporation Bhd To Spread Awareness On Organ Donation

On 5 October 2015 NKF together with IJM Corporation Bhd launched the organ donation awareness campaign at the Loke Yew Toll Plaza. The campaign, covering a time-frame from that date to December of the year, involved the distribution of organ donation information packs at public toll booths in the Klang Valley operated by the company.

Toll booths covered by the distribution were at the

New Pantai Expressway (NPE) East and West tolls, Kajang-Seremban Highway (LEKAS) South toll and Besraya (BES) Loke Yew, Mines South and Mines North tolls.

The information packs contained wallet tissues with organ donation statistics and pamphlets on organ donation that had been compiled by the Public Education Unit of NKF.

At the launch site at the Loke Yew Toll Plaza free health screenings, cooking demonstrations, health exhibitions and health talks were held in conjunction with the launch.

The collaboration with IJM was part of the continuous efforts of NKF to promote organ donation, in addition to aiming to dispel misconceptions on organ donation through numerous education programmes which include health screening, health exhibitions and talks on organ donation.

NKF graciously thanks the management of IJM Corporation Bhd for its full-hearted and generous support for the campaign.

As a further step towards reinforcing organ donation awareness, an organ donation promotion unit was opened in the Sunway Pyramid in October 2015 as a more permanent, convenient and concrete step to encourage more organ pledges.

The Public Education Department (PED) of NKF has set a new regional office in Batu Pahat, Johor, as its 5th LifeCheck Team, serving the states of Johor, Negeri Sembilan and Malacca.

The address of the office is:-7-1, Jalan Ceria,Batu Pahat.Johor

It began operations on 15 December 2015 with the team under the supervision of Ms. Yap Lai Yin, the Assistant Manager from PED Head Office, carrying out its maiden health screening at the Summit Batu Pahat from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. As a result, 46 persons were screened.

The team carried out another screening on 20 December 2015 at the Batu Pahat Mall, when Mr. Chan Ming Zheong, the Lions Club of Batu Pahat Chairman, organized a health screening as well as a blood donation drive.

The health screening carried out involved readings of blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) and tests on urine and blood glucose as well as counselling based on the results of the readings and tests.

NKF thanks graciously the Lions Club of Batu Pahat in particular Mr. Chan Ming Zheong for the selfless efforts in making the screenings a success.

NKF Health Screening At Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur On 24 January 2016, the Elite Team of NKF Mobile LifeCheck was in

Batu Caves to carry out free health screening. The team was made up of 7 NKF staff from the Public Education Department and 3 students from the International Medical University, Kuala Lumpur, who were doing their internship with the Foundation.

With Cik Norhafatini Bte Aziz as the leader, the team set up the screening at the Sri Maha Mariaman Temple Devasthanam.

The free screening covered readings in blood pressure, body mass index (BMI) and urine as well as tests for blood glucose. To round up the readings and tests, individuals who had undergone the screening were counselled based on the results of the tests and readings.

Blood pressure reading is taken to reveal the likelihood of stroke, heart and kidney diseases, with the urine test to screen for diabetes and kidney diseases. On the other hand, BMI assesses the risks of heart and blood vessel diseases and other related diseases.

Nevertheless, such a screening is only a preliminary to an individual’s well-being, and if the tests for an individual reveal irregularities he is advised to go for further medical tests at a hospital or a medical facility.

At the end of the screening, 81 persons had their health checked, and NKF is very appreciative of Datuk Dr. A.T. Kumararajah, Head of Medical, Thaipusam Festival Batu Caves for making the necessary arrangements to enable the screening to be carried out without any hitches.

Patients’ Family Day of Pusat Dialisis NKF - Dato’ Dr. G.A. Sreenevasan (Petaling Jaya) - 4 October 2015

4 October 2015 was a special occasion for patients, their family members and members of the staff at Pusat Dialisis NKF - Dato’ Dr. G.A. Sreenevasan (Petaling Jaya).

It was a time when they gathered together as a coherent group to celebrate the Patients’ Family Day of the Centre at Lubok Manggis Camp in Hulu Langat, Selangor.

The celebration kicked off when they assembled at the premises of the Centre at 8.00 a.m. In all, 32 patients together with 20 members of their families and 15 Centre staff members boarded a bus chartered for the occasion and 7 cars to travel to the camp site.

Once there, the group was feted to breakfast before proceeding with their organized activities of fun and games.

With the enthusiastic participation of the group, barriers to closer and warmer relationships were overcome especially since the patients dialyzing at the Centre were from three different shifts.

As time progressed the members of the group became more relaxed with their actions and conversations.

In between the fun and games, the group also enjoyed lovely meals.

To round up the Day and to make it more meaningful and memorable, all patients were given goody bags. There were also prizes for group and lucky winners and these included amongst other items a stand fan, an oven and a rice cooker that were sponsored by companies.

Finally the Day came to an end when the group left the camp at 4.30 p.m. and headed back to the Centre.

Family Walkathon Sees RousingParticipation In Aid Of Kidney Disease

On 12 March 2016, in conjunction with World Kidney Day 2016, the National Kidney Foundation, together with the Malaysian Society of Nephrology and the Ministry of Health jointly kicked of the World Kidney Day Family Walkathon. Held at Kepong Metropolitan Park in Kuala Lumpur, the event witnessed the congregation of more than 1,500 participants who came together to support the battle against kidney disease.

The event was also graced by Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Dr. Hj. Azman Abu Bakar, Director of Medical Development Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia.

Covering a distance of 3.5km which took participants on a scenic route around the vicinity of the Kepong Metropolitan Park lake, the walkathon was flagged off at 8.00am by YBhg Dato’ Dr Hj Azman bin Abu Bakar.

Themed “Kidney Disease & Children”, the event championed the prevention of kidney disease, especially amongst children, with a special emphasis on the need to encourage a healthy lifestyle amongst youngsters and early action to keep the onset of kidney disease at bay.

True to the theme and to encourage the participation of entire family units, the registration fee to participate in the walk was waived for participants aged 18 years and below while a nominal fee of RM15 was imposed on adults, to further encourage participation, especially among family units.

“Given the growing sedentary lifestyle among the Malaysian communities, we have witnessed the onset of kidney disease among more and more people, even among the youth. Even seemingly healthy kids may be at risk of kidney disease at an early age, so we urge everyone to be more aware of the symptoms of kidney disease.” said Dr. Wan Jazilah Wan Ismail, the Organising Chairperson of World Kidney Day 2016 Family Walkathon.

“This year marks the 11th anniversary of the World Kidney Day. Seeing the rise of the disease among younger patients globally, this year’s campaign is dedicated towards the prevention of kidney disease amongst the young. Parents were encouraged to be more involved with their children’s wellbeing,” she added.

World Kidney Day 2016 also aims at providing support for the thousands of families in Malaysia with children already living with kidney disease.

Many participants and visitors were seen taking advantage of the complimentary health screenings, diet counselling and health exhibition offered at Kepong Metropolitan Park. Although educational, the event took on a carnival-like atmosphere of sorts with a myriad of fun-filled activities, especially tailored for children. These included a colouring contest, face painting, balloon castles, sand art and Mr. Red Bubbles the clown, who thrilled the young ones with his antics and special tricks.

World Kidney Day is annually observed globally on the second Thursday of March. Proceeds from the Family Walkathon will be channeled towards NKF’s efforts in raising awareness about kidney disease and providing treatment for Malaysia’s underprivileged kidney disease patients.

Students Of International Islamic University Malaysia Did Their Worthy Part For NKF

On 16 November 2015, students of Practicum 3999 Class of the International Islamic University Malaysia embarked on a campaign to raise funds in aid of the poor patients having their dialysis treatment in centres of NKF.

The campaign kicked off with the students helping to sell merchandise which they had obtained from NKF and using NKF donation boxes to solicit donations.

Among the items for sale were the NKF umbrellas, button badges, canvas bags, wrist bands, fridge magnets

They then proceeded to use their ingenuity to sell the merchandise to the campus community and members of the public. Likewise, in seeking donations, they too approached individuals from within and outside the university.

To add to their boundless energy in raising money through this approach until 11 December 2015 they capped their activities by organizing a charity dinner with half the cost of food sponsored by the China Islamic Cuisine, while the décor for the function was done by Elzawa Couture.

Among the highlights of the dinner were a video show of student life in the university, lucky draws, songs and speeches.

As a result of their prolonged and selfless sacrifices in seeking money for NKF, a total of RM5,214.15 was collected from the entire combination of the activities covering a time-frame of nearly a month.

NKF is profoundly grateful to the worthy actions of the students in the Practicum 3999 Class of the International Islamic University Malaysia.
