Drainage & Flood Protection News

Rainwater Harvesting Ltd has developed an innovative SuDS

device, providing an exciting new method for flood prevention. Rain Activ, provides ultra-low discharge source control for domestic homes with full auditability and minimal maintenance.

The system uses a storage vessel between 800L and 15,000L, a self-cleaning filter and low discharge SuDS outlet. Water from the roof area is filtered using a 1,000 micron screen, discarding any leaves or debris into the overflow. If configured, once the clean, filtered water has entered the tank a proportion can be used for rainwater harvesting.

During a storm event, the water level in the tank rises above the SuDS outlet which has an orifice 5-15mm depending on specification.

Using such a small orifice provides low discharge rates. For a typical domestic dwelling peak discharge can be as low

as 0.05 L/sec.

Rain Activ really provides drainage professionals with a powerful tool to reduce discharge rates from roof water to an absolute minimum. The product can cost-effectively, with low maintenance and full auditability deal with run off for smaller developments, greenfield sites and sites where low discharge values has been stipulated by planners.

Rain Activ has been rigorously tested over the last 18 months

with discharge data academically verified though theoretical, lab and real world data analysis.

By using data alongside hydraulic modelling software MicroDrainage™ the system is designed bespoke to the client’s requirements.Rain Activ sets to reduce costs to developers by heavily reducing or even eliminating secondary SuDS infrastructure such as balancing ponds and geocellular storage. In many cases this will provide additional land for the developer.

From inception the system has been developed with a reduction of on-site costs as a critical factor. Above ground or shallow dig underground tanks with an installation depth of around 1m are used reducing spoil removal. Tanks arrives fully assembled ready to install.

Crucially, maintenance is

extremely low (typically one visual check of the filter per year) and normally the responsibility of the home owner. The system therefore also provides considerable year on year cost savings in comparison with traditional SuDS technologies. Utilising knowledge from a decade of market leadership in the sector, Rain Activ can also be specified as a dual purpose system to combine with rainwater harvesting.

As the filtration and tank are already in situ, creating a full domestic rainwater harvesting system is as simple as adding a pump and management unit. In the UK,

a future integrated water management strategy should consider rainwater harvesting as an addition to new build properties. Rain Activ can collect 98% of roof run off so is an effective SuDS solution but as a dual system it provides developers with the ability to reduce mains water consumption by around 50%. As most of the infrastructure is already in place, the additional cost to add rainwater harvesting tends to be only

a few hundred pounds.”

At the main site in Peterborough there is a functioning Rain Activ system with test facilities. If you would like a demonstration of the effectiveness of the new technology please call or email.

Rain Activ-Sustainable Drainage Solution

Access all areas with TubosiderIf you are specifying a stormwater

system, speak to Tubosider. Tubosider are committed to finding customers the most effective value-engineered solution, designed specifically to meet the site brief. They are the leading UK manufacturer of corrugated steel pipe for WRc-approved stormwater management and attenuation tank systems, culverts and tunnels – including their WRc-certified Singlestore range, and their patented Twinstore System.

All Tubosider’s systems are designed by their expert team of problem solvers and made to order in their factory. Their approach of meeting challenges head-on means they regularly design bespoke systems and even new products to meet their customer’s requirements.

It was this ‘customer first’ focus that lead them to develop their new range of access chambers,

which rank as one of their most innovatively-designed drainage products yet. The development of this new WRc-approved range was driven solely by a desire to make life easier for customers, after

Tubosider’s design team recognised its potential in helping to save time, costs and reduce health and safety issues compared to installing modular systems.

Fabricated from galvanised steel, the uniquely-designed access chamber is able to be lifted entirely into an excavation. A lifting ring certified to the required weight is

secured by three incorporated slinging points that are part of the chamber design. The lifting ring is designed to remain attached to the chamber so that it can simply be dropped into place, typically reducing installation time to just an hour or two.

The devastating storms and floods that hit the North during Christmas 2015 are what sparked the National Flood Resilience Review. With the aim to see what lessons could be learnt, the review established the importance of installing temporary flood barriers across the UK. The government, through the Environment Agency, has now significantly increased their stock of temporary barriers.

Having worked closely with the EA since 2001, Geodesign Barriers have now officially become an EA framework partner and are supplying more temporary barriers for national

deployment. The well-established company not only manufactures quality barriers but also assist with planning, surveys and training of staff. They have created effective flood protection for a number of renowned companies including National Grid, UK Power Networks, Northern PowerGrid, SSE and SGN.

Geodesign Barriers have a long, proven record of successful flood emergency responses in the UK, across Europe and all over the world, since the mid 1990s. Around 68km of barrier have so far been distributed around the world, providing an effective protection against flooding. BSI Kitemarked since 2003, this easy-to-deploy, flat packed barrier is available in dam heights of 0.45m, 0.65m, 0.80m, 0.85m, 1m, 1.01m 1.10m, 1.25m, 1.50m, 1.80m and 2.40m.

Britt Warg, UK ManagerM +44 (0)7890 [email protected]

Geodesign Barriers become an EA framework partner

Having been recognised as the Best Company to attend Flood Expo

2016, we are delighted to introduce Geodesign Barriers Ltd to our readership. We spoke to the organisation’s UK Manager Britt Warg, who was keen to tell us more about this achievement.

The group made a great impression at the world’s largest flood exhibition and conference, which was held in London this October, whilst showcasing the latest version of its newest flood protection system, the EUR101. The steel barrier, which is more lightweight than

its counterparts, is particularly convenient for those running large scale flooding operations and has recently been sold to the Environment Agency as part of a substantial nationwide investment.

The original prototype from Geodesign Barriers incorporated metal frames, wooden EUR pallets and a plastic membrane

cover. The most contemporary varieties employ aluminium sheets or marine plywood boards instead of pallets and have been duly acknowledged as highly effective forms of flood protection.

The barriers were specifically designed for the purpose of flood rescue operations and have proven most useful even during the most challenging of conditions, including guarding vital infrastructure. The tried and tested innovation has saved many properties from the devastation caused by floods and have been used for advanced coffer damming in civil engineering works as well as in projects conducted for the EA, local authorities, utility companies and private businesses.

“With our vast experience we have a lot of knowledge to share,” Britt explained. “We would like to stress that we don’t just sell the barrier, we also assist and help our customers by providing expert advice and

training so they can use the barrier for best practice.”

With a lifespan reaching well over 50 years, the reusable and robust system can save clients a significant amount of money and time. Its simplicity is also a key benefit; as well as being quick to deploy and easy to store (as a flat-packed product in stackable crates), the barrier can even be effectively deployed in water.

It was this versatility that made Geodesign Barriers stand out whilst at the coveted trade show. “Just like last year, Flood Expo went really well for us,” Britt continued. “In fact, the 2016 showcase was even better than the previous. We made a lot of good contacts; visitors were very aware of our product and were keen to learn more.

“During our time there we received two awards: a banner by the BSI for having had the BSI Kitemark for 13 years and

Building Solutions’ ‘Best Company At Show review 2016’. Following this success we will certainly be attending the next edition of the Flood Expo – we have already booked the same stand location!”

Geodesign Barriers are also promoting a ‘National Flood Brigade’ concept. The idea is to make the best possible use of the resources available whilst enlisting the help of trained local volunteers able to assist in an emergency situation – reacting to a flood as retained firemen would to a fire. This will involve the participation of individuals who, after having been trained to use the temporary flood barriers, will work with the authorities to make modern modes of flood protection more accessible and efficient.

T +44 (0)1793 538565M +44 (0)7890 [email protected]

Flood Solutions Proven in Flexibility, Reliability & Security

The team, who boast over two decades of industry experience, impressed the

hordes of visitors participating in the coveted event whilst promoting their exceptional flood protection systems.

The company’s history dates back to 1995 with Sten-Magnus Kullberg, a dedicated and hard-working designer who developed the barrier concept and erected a temporary flood protection system with the incorporation of metal frames and wooden EUR pallets covered with a robust plastic membrane.

It was upon this occasion that the pallet’s strength was recognised, although during the course of the organisation’s existence this has since been replaced with aluminium sheets and marine plywood boards (although the pallet is still a viable option should customers prefer this).

Once an investment in the flood barrier has been made, the company can provide training on how best to deploy it whilst also carrying out surveys for vulnerable sites and producing temporary barrier plans that

customers will find most useful.

This great flexibility was one of the benefits that made the product particularly attractive to potential customers attending the industry-specific trade event, which is widely considered the place to be for flood professionals.

Attending the show at ExCel, London, APT showcased their

superior, high performance Eco Dry range of laminated fabrics as well as the new, innovative Aclimatise range. Manufactured in the UK, Aclimatise is the world’s first thermoregulated waterproof, breathable and windproof fabric system. It includes a range of fleeces, gilets and jackets designed to challenge the norm in the outdoor clothing industry. A workwear range of waterproof garments will soon be introduced to further enhance the collection.

A popular hit with the audience was APT’s unique Hi-Vis collection. As 95% of Hi-Vis clothing currently ends up as land fill, APT Fabrics has developed a solution meaning their range can be fully recycled at the end of life,

leading to substantial benefits for the environment. The company is currently working on a new Hi-Vis jacket and trousers combo to rival all other brands. The show was a major success for the company as they received a great deal of interest, many potential leads and an overwhelming amount of positive feedback.

“Our products were a major hit at the show and we were able to speak to a great deal of existing and potential customers,” commented Founder Stanley Russell. “We were shortlisted for 3 sections and were highly commended for our Fabric innovation.”

The Northern Ireland-based company was set up by Stanley in 2008 following his 30 years of experience in the fabrics industry. His knowledge

in every facet of the sector – from coating to weaving – prompted the budding entrepreneur into starting up a company specialising in high performance products.

The resulting APT Fabrics is now a renowned name in the delivery of specialist solutions aimed at the PPE and technical clothing segment. Its competencies extend to customised fabric sourcing and modification services, and seminars, consultancy and technical textile training schemes are also available to be implemented where necessary.

“At APT Fabrics, we are passionate about providing customers with high quality products that really work,” Stanley continued. “We are always innovating; coming up with outstanding products and considering how to bring new technologies into current workplaces.

“We are now working on a number of new and exciting products which will soon be available and our aim is to

continue to make customers aware of the many potential benefits our Aclimatise range has to offer.”

Energy Saving with Titanium Tank Heaters

The need for dependable, high quality heating systems is ever-present,

particularly due to the fact there are around 1,000 microbreweries throughout the UK. This is where Titanium Products comes in, facilitating the needs apparent in the industry with its renowned supply of exceptional higher power heaters.

The ISO 9001:2008 certified company, which was originally established in 1990 as a supplier of non-standard welded CP Titanium tube for the main domestic electric hot water heaters element market, uses approved sub-contractors in order to provide machined components, pipe fittings and welded/fabricated assemblies to customers’ drawings. The team also supply precious metal coated Ti anodes and heating coils for tanks.

The reasons to fit titanium tank heaters over the traditionally specified nickel alloy heaters are extensive. Not only do they last 3 times longer than its outdated counterparts (as proven by a number of breweries including Teignworthy Brewery of Newton Abbot), but they also use less energy, improving efficiency with a thinner wall titanium tube (titanium heaters feature a 0.4mm wide tube whereas alloy heaters us a 0.6mm wide tube). In addition to this, the advanced heating systems are customisable, help to reduce lime scale build up and have a greater level of thermal conductivity.

Specifically, the titanium sheathed water heating elements offer a superior thermal performance in hard water areas; in these cases, typically installed nickel alloy heaters that have a shorter service life, so you will get more value for money and significantly less maintenance trouble with the titanium alternatives.

These notable benefits are supported by the 6 week relative performance project conducted by WatStech (spin off from University of Wolverhampton) and funded by MAS. This scheme demonstrated a 6% reduction in energy costs with a Ti heater

when compared to a similar specification nickel alloy heater (further details can be found on the website: www.titaniumproducts.co.uk).

Furthermore, specifying these titanium heaters will help to support organisations who are seeking the following certifications:

a) ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management: (the minimisation of waste and efficient use of raw materials and energy)

b) ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management: (the reduction of energy usage and carbon footprint) accreditations, so they will also help to better businesses’ green credentials.

The stock tank heaters are 9kW/240V and 12kW/415V and the size range for the titanium tubes is 6.35mm – 15.88mm diameter for as-welded products. By drawing down stock tube, diameters down to 1mm are available for medical/surgical instruments, temperature sensors etc., and the Titanium strip at 0.4mm and 0.5mm thickness is usually in stock (other thicknesses below 0.5mm can be produced by cold rolling). 240V, 3kW, 11”L, 27”L, 9kW, 36”L, 415V, 12kW, 36”L & 65mmL titanium heaters are available ex-stock on the company website, and other sizes can be made to order if required.

Bricks and mortar are like moisture reservoirs that fill during a rain event

– they wick water into themselves because they are porous. Properly built brickwork will give many years of trouble free service, but add an extension or conservatory onto an exterior wall and there could be trouble ahead.

The problem is both rain and sun together can exacerbate the excessive moisture in walls and cavities. Wind driven rain will track by capillary suction into dryer areas of brickwork. Solar radiation heats saturated brickwork and will drive moisture vapour inward as well as outwards. A higher vapour pressure and temperature differential forms between the cavity and cool interior, drawing in the moisture vapour, which will then condense into liquid and present as damp spots within the existing building or building extension interior.

The Solution is to apply ProShield XT water repellent masonry cream to the exterior

masonry walls. It’s quick and easy to apply and being water based, is environmentally friendly, with no VOCs. It does not seal the masonry structure but penetrates deeply, to provide breathable, invisible protection from damaging water ingress - maintaining masonry appearance whilst reducing the risk of penetrating water damp and mould within the structures interior – Only available from Rapierstar.

Send your message with artWhat better way to show your

loved ones you care than with beautiful contemporary works of art. From atmospheric landscapes to boxing hares and from cute puppies to steam trains, you are sure to find something to suit every taste with Natural Partners Art’s beautiful prints and greeting cards.

Working with over 30 established and emerging artists and photographers, the family-owned fine art publishing company produce quality gifts that reproduce artists’ original works.

The organisation was set up by Joe Cole in 1999. Having come from a very arty family, Joe recognised the struggle every artist goes through to get noticed and saw how many can be exploited by businesses. He therefore

wanted to provide a platform where artists were free to express themselves and create their own individual art to be showcased and sold to the public.

He set up the company as a small fundraising business working with local charities and dabbling with fine art prints and cards as fundraising tools before eventually moving over to the publishing side in 2010 after receiving encouragement from a number of retailers. All artists working with Joe are guaranteed to be treated fairly and receive a royalty for every print that is sold. He also acts as an agent for some artists, helping them to become recognised in the industry.

Natural Partners Art display their greeting cards and prints at many major trade shows throughout the year. They are also available to purchase from small and independent card and gift shops, garden centres and galleries as well as major national chains.

For more information contact Joe on +44 (0)7714 768956 or email [email protected]. The website is currently being updated to offer a new trade and retail site. This can be found at www.naturalpartnersart.co.uk

Here at Industrial Solutions we are delighted to announce that Thermaset

has been selected as our dedicated Powder Coating Company of Choice.

It all began in 1984 with the business’s founder Tom McElhannan. Over three decades of refined industry experience – namely in the formulation of thermosetting powders for the purpose of electrostatic

application – has enabled the company to become one of the largest manufacturers of its kind operating within the UK.

Based in Staffordshire,

Thermaset boasts an extensive product range comprising various powder coatings (speciality, antibacterial, polyester, architectural, nylon modified, epoxy, post forming and epoxy polyester included). The particularly popular architectural variety, which can be used for interior and exterior usage, incorporates selected polyester resins and pigments in order to remain functional

after being laid on buildings, window frames, fascia and fences.

The corrosion-resistant powders have proven effective within shop fitting, electronic, household appliance, furniture and automotive applications. These products have been deemed a more operationally advantageous alternative to traditional, solvent-based coatings because they don’t run or sag and don’t require the effort involved with pre-mixing. Other benefits include minimal waste, easy control and the ability to be recovered for re-use.

The recently ISO 14001 accredited organisation is also pleased to offer a highly convenient and widely appreciated next day delivery service. This efficient method,

which has been titled ‘Pre 12 for a Pre 12’, enables customers to receive selected stock the morning after an order submission, provided the purchase was made before noon on the previous day.

Ben Jennens, Sales and Marketing Co-ordinator at Thermaset, told us: “The depth of our stock range and the level of customer service we offer is what places us in a strong position in the industry. We provide the personal touch – our dedicated and experienced team are always on hand to answer any query as quickly as possible and we strive to provide every customer with the right product to suit their requirements.”

2011 and has become increasingly popular ever since. Situated in Ford, near Arundel in West Sussex, the architectural & structural specialist strives to provide the most appropriate glass design solutions individually tailored to suit singular customer applications.

The refined industry experts employed at the organisation are well practiced in supplying and fitting exquisitely designed and carefully constructed staircases, balustrades, splashbacks, sho ronts, walk-on glass

floors/bridges, glass ceilings, glass roofs and aluminium curtain walling. Custom-made door solutions, automatic entrances, sliding glass doors and glass canopies are also available as part of the company’s comprehensive product portfolio.

The company’s most recent focus has been the expansion of its acoustic door range. The flush, individually fabricated double glazed acoustic doors achieve up to 44dB (Rw) acoustic performance, incorporating excellent sound reducing qualities whilst simultaneously providing the clean glass look, a finish that is extensively required in contemporary office buildings. With its recent relocation to larger premises, Demon Designs is now able to house a large

stock of standard door sizes whilst promising the fastest turnaround in the industry.

In essence, Demon Designs acts as a one-stop-shop providing a full range of glass and metal structures and specialised services. In order to ensure customers receive the necessary support and expected reassurances following an enquiry, the group offers an inclusive sales package covering all associated areas. This inevitably involves the arrangement of thorough consultations and the formulation of accurate drawings and detailed quotations following in-depth discussions specifying project requirements and important technical information.

This great flexibility – which is further emphasised with Demon Designs’ bespoke design capabilities – comes courtesy of the in-house team’s unrivalled knowledge in glass product development and creation. With over 20 years of shared experience, the competent workforce has a reputation for design excellence and has the skillset needed to produce unique components facilitating side hung or pivoting versions, self-closing or free swing.

This ability to fulfil all glass product requirements has made Demon

Designs attractive to a number of esteemed clients. Its bespoke assemblies and standard off-the-shelf structures have been supplied and installed across a multitude of sites, having been widely appreciated by customers working within a variety of construction sectors.

Previous projects of particular significance include the installation of automatic doors at the visually characteristic Walkie Talkie building on Fenchurch Street in Central London and the general fitting of kitchen splashbacks and shower screens. As well as tending to the needs of small and medium

sized building contractors, general builders, domestic customers and large construction companies, the team has even provided design consultancy services to a few of its competitors!

Please don’t hesitate to contact Demon Designs today if you want any further information or if you

wish to enquire about a particular product or service. Any questions you pose will be met with an informed response by a well-qualified industry professional.

A company that cares about quality and cost

Renowned for their services in milling, grinding,

blending and storage of fine mineral powders, Francis Flower recover, reclaim and recycle mineral by-products from industry for the benefit of customers and the environment. They provide an exceptional range of products and services to customers primarily in the construction and agriculture industries but increasingly in the paints, plastics and pharmaceutical sectors.

Francis Flowers’ unrivalled expertise along with over 50 years’ experience in the industry has led to the company becoming a leading provider of specialised mineral materials and services for a range of industrial sectors.

The prestigious company is the owner of the UK market leading

brand- Gypsol. Manufactured in the UK, Gypsol acts as an exceptional alternative to sand/cement screeds and polished concrete. At the forefront of liquid screed development and innovation, the Gypsol brand has grown significantly since its creation three years ago and has gained the majority of the market. It is made mainly from a recycled material and makes for the perfect supplement to underfloor heating.

When compared to the more outdated and traditional flooring systems, Gypsol has proven to be more advantageous in a multitude of ways. Not only is it significantly cheaper, less problematic and more environmentally friendly (as it is constructed predominantly from a recycled material), it is also incredibly easy to apply.

“The Gypsol product is a highly useful, innovative creation,” commented Paul

Pepper, Managing Director of Francis Flower. “Since introducing the product three years ago we have received a fantastic amount of interest and sales have soared. We provide the basis for our customers to produce a high quality floor screed and we create the demand in the market for them to sell into.”

Architects, designers, main contractors, self-builders and flooring contractors utilise this specialist ingredient in order to effectively enhance their industrial projects. The incorporation of Gypsol over underfloor heating systems lessens costs and increases sustainability, and tests have confirmed that those using anhydrite screeds can improve the co-efficient performance of an underfloor heating system by up to 25% by reducing reaction times and reducing the required flow temperature.

A notable product in the Francis Flower portfolio is the Solida System, which is designed to provide a whole house heating solution by combining existing technologies and the Gypsol based flowing anhydrite floor screeds. The process involves incorporating Gypsol screed in separating floors in order to maximise desirability, asset value and useable space.

“This system enables the screed to go on the first floor on timber floors, ensuring homeowners encapsulate underfloor heating effectively,” Paul explained. “As a sustainable alternative to radiators, the Solida System improves a house builder’s green credentials massively as it reduces energy use. We now have a number

of customers using the Solida System, including the renowned timber frame manufacturers Oakworth Homes.”

“We provide the highest quality products and systems to help your company create the best products possible,” Paul concluded. “Our aim is to continue to develop more innovative products and work on our systems to further improve thermal conductivity. We also have other exciting products and systems we are working on that due to be launched in the near future.”
