PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Dear Parents and Carers and Community Members

I would like to start this newsletter with a huge thanks to all the students, parentsand staff of South Newman Primary School. Over the last few weeks we haveseen so many great things happening as a result of hard work, effort anddedication. To the students, thank you for your efforts you made in class toachieve good results and abide by our Newman Way values inside the class andoutside. Thank you to the parents and carers who ensure their children attendschool every day they are well and for being a part of their child’s educationaljourney. Thank you to the staff for their dedication, passion and desire to see allof our children achieve success no matter how big or small, academically andsocially.

I'd like to highlight some of the great things that have happened at sunny SouthNewman Primary over the past few weeks;

Last week we had our annual Lapathon. This year the P&C decided to add aSuper Hero theme which added lots of fun and colour to the morning. It waslovely to see so many families take the time to be with their child to run and walklaps around the Goanna oval. All money raised will go directly towards our NaturePlayground.

We were visited by the Royal Lifesaving Association and they spoke to differentage groups about water safety and water awareness.

The middle and upper Primary students had a workshop titled Zerobullying. Wehope the students can apply the strategies learnt when dealing with conflict andto remember the importance of accepting others and their differences.

We were fortunate to have Foodbank spend two days in our school cooking withmultiple classes. The outdoor kitchen proved to be a very useful space and thestudents not only cooked up a storm but learnt many important healthy eatingfacts.

Late last week, we had our Learning Journey evening where the students workwas showcased and family members were welcomed into the beautifulclassrooms created by the teachers and students. Student Reports were sent home last Monday identifying student achievementand progress. If any parent would like to discuss aspects of the report please donot hesitate to contact the class teacher.

This week we have been celebrating NAIDOC with many activities, starting with afantastic opening ceremony on Monday. During the week we’ve had a variety ofcultural experiences provided to the students and today we have our closingceremony. I would like to thank Mrs Bonney, Mrs Jones, Miss Murphy and MrsMcMaster for their work in creating such an engaging week. We all learnt manynew things and were able to acknowledge the contributions of many femalesthrough this years NAIDOC theme of “Because of Her, We Can”.

Sincere thanks must go to our previous Board members as the contributions theymade were invaluable. Due to the tenure of many of our school board membersexpiring we called for nominations. We were overwhelmed by the number ofpeople wishing to join our board. Voting took place and we are pleased to sharewith you our new School Board which we will introduce in the near future.

This term we farewell some of our staff. I would like to thank Miss Marie, MrsRuth O'Dwyer, Miss Thompson, Mrs Kucan and Ms Costello for the contributionsthey have all made to our school and wish them well for the future. We alsofarewell Liesel Pensio and her family, Liesel has been a speech therapist at ourschool for many years and volunteers her time in many ways to our school, working closely with families and staff members.

May I wish each and everyone of you a very happy and safe July holiday break.Take care on the roads and remember to value your most prized possessions, each other.

Happy holidays, see you back at school on Monday, 16 July.

LUNCH TIME 'CHILL OUT'

Lunchtime Chill-Out with Miss Loren creates a safe, easy going andfun space for any age student to come and just be.

Usually students come in to draw pictures, play games on thewhiteboard, and listen to music. While they play, we chat. It’sbecome a popular space and most students that come have beenpopping in regularly, so the “chill out” part definitely does not equalquiet because it gets pretty noisy in there!

Lunchtime Chill-Out takes place on Mondays & Thursdays 12.30-12.50pm.

'BREATHING STAR'

You may notice your children coming home with a BreathingStar.

Breathing Stars are a great way to remind kids to BREATHE intimes where they may be feeling distressed and overwhelmed.

They are pocket sized and laminated so they last. A great way toget involved with your child’s learning about their breathing star isto ask them to teach you how to use it. This reinforces theirlearning and also gives you the awareness that they have a toolthey can use to assist in regulating their emotions. I love thembecause they are visually appealing and tactile which helps tokeep focus.

'BOYS SHED'

Chris McIntosh

On the first day in

the Boys Shed, the

first step was to talk

about

the importance of

safety and working

with tools in the

workshop.

The students were

clearly excited to

work hands on and

were clearly

engaged.
