MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT GOVERNORMy Dear Family of Rotary,

Warm Greetings!

November is The Rotary Foundation Month. A Foundation that has been into existence for more than a 100 years. An incredible Foundation that supports and strengthens our clubs’ service projects and enables us to conceive long-term sustainable projects that will benefit our communities for years to come.

To put it simply, if we want to do good in the world, the Rotary Foundation provides us the support that multiplies our efforts manifolds. Our fight against Polio is a shinning example of how each Rotarian’s contributions have been put to the best use.

Through the pages of this newsletter, I urge each and every Rotarian of our District to contribute generously to the Rotary Foundation, if not more then at least a 100 Dollars each. As the collective contributions that we make this year to the Rotary Foundation will come back to our District in the year 2020-21, enabling us to do even bigger and better service projects.

The generous contributions made by you all in the previous year, proudly brought laurels to our District, making it the second highest contributor to the Rotary Foundation from our zone (which includes India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh). I am sure together we will be able to surpass the previous year’s mark.

I feel proud to announce that during the Rotary Foundation Seminar aptly named, The Million Dollar Dinner, held on 23rd August 2017, the Rotarians of our esteemed District committed to raise over 1.2 million dollars. However, now it’s time for us to honour our commitments.

Let us together Make a Difference by contributing generously to the Rotary Foundation and make it stronger.

New Year is the time at which a new calendar year begins and the calendar's year count increments by one.

Many cultures celebrate the event in some manner and the 1st day of January is often marked as a national holiday.

In the Gregorian calendar, the most widely used calendar system today, New Year occurs on January 1 (New Year's Day). This was also the case both in the Roman calendar (at least after about 713 BCE) and in the Julian calendar that succeeded it.

Other calendars have been used historically in different parts of the world; some calendars count years numerically, while others do not.

During the Middle Ages in western Europe, while the Julian calendar was still in use, authorities moved New Year's Day, depending upon locale, to one of several other days, including March 1, March 25, Easter, September 1, and December 25. Beginning in 1582, the adoptions of the Gregorian calendar and changes to the Old Style and New Style dates meant the various local dates for New Year's Day changed to using one fixed date, January 1.

The widespread official adoption of the Gregorian calendar and marking January 1 as the beginning of a new year is almost global now. Regional or local use of other calendars continue, along with the cultural and religious practices that accompany them. In Latin America, various native cultures continue the observation of traditions according to their own calendars. Israel, China, India, and other countries continue to celebrate New Year on different dates.
