Pastor’s Corner                                          Rev. Samuel Loterte, SSS Important Dates:

Mission Statement: Centered on the Word of God and the Eucharist we gather as a commu-nity of disciples of Jesus Christ as we seek full-ness of life.

Blessed with many cul-tures and gifted with the Hawaiian spirit of Aloha we pledge to share our heritage and our faith, and commit ourselves to the full development of our people.

With Saint Joseph as our patron we offer our gift of self for the greater glory of God.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear brothers and sisters,

We can learn from Martha and Mary, the two leading characters in today's gospel reading. Like Martha, we can be 'anxious and upset about many things' when entertaining visitors. Like Mary, we can go out of our way to be attentive to them. We can spend time listening to their stories. They need to be listened to just as much as they need to be served food.

This is the same in our life of faith. Sometimes we have the tendency to focus much on what we want from God and on what we can do for God. What the Lord wants of us is to be close to him and to put our trust in him amid life's concerns.

This is the kind of hospitality that the Lord wants from us.

God bless you,

Fr. Samuel E. Loterte, SSS

V To Our

We might call today "hospitality Sunday." Our Gospel story is the familiar ac-count of Jesus visiting the home of Martha and Mary. Martha sounds a lot like my Italian grandmother. I remember how, as a child growing up in the house where my grandmother lived, I would watch her prepare for Sunday company. Guests who came to our house would be the center of attention. My grand-mother would work feverishly before the guests arrived to prepare the meal. During the meal she would fuss at them, to make sure they had enough to eat—of every dish on the table. Woe to you if you failed to sample everything my grandmother had prepared! She imitated Martha's busy concern for guests, mak-ing sure they had all they needed. But there's another side of hospitality besides fussing over the food or accom-modations for a guest. It’s taking the time to listen, to give the other our full at-tention. Last Sunday the story of the Good Samaritan urged us to take a risk to become involved with others as a true neighbor. Today we have the "how-to" of Christian neighborliness. In our parishes, neighborhoods and city, we need both dimensions of Christian hospitality: actively serving while we seek to truly lis-ten and understand. I’m Father Greg Friedman, with the "Sunday Soundbite" for St. Anthony Mes-senger Press, on the Web at FranciscanRadio.org.

We are in the process of developing a Pastor Plan in accord with this mission. We need help especially in the area of Adult Formation. This will include an RCIA program starting in September for adults who wish to be baptized, enter the church, and/or receive confirmation. If you have an interest in this area and a will-ingness to help develop such a program, please contact Peggy Farias at 982-5919. Mahalo!

(continued from page 4) E KOMO MAI, FR. KHANH: We welcome Fr. Khanh Hoang to Malia Puka O Kalani and thank him for help-ing us celebrate the liturgy in the absence of Fr. Joe. Fr. Khanh is the Vicar for Clergy and, as such, is directly responsible to the Bishop in representing all the concerns of the diocesan clergy. This is a very important position but, many times, an unnoticed and thankless job. Fr. Khanh’s presence at Malia this week-end affords all of us the opportunity to say, “MAHALO for your ministry”. Fr. Khanh will be here only for the weekend. There will be no Masses during the week. THE NEW PROCESSIONAL CROSS: I hope you have noticed the new processional cross. This cross was made by and is a gift from our parishioner, Chris Graper. Chris found the KOA wood, dried it, cut it, shaped it, and made it into this wonderful holy object. Chris is the same person who made the KOA stand for the tabernacle. MAHALO, CHRIS! FUND RAISING PROJECT: We have an innovative fund raising project under the guidance of Luana Leite and Laverne Costa: A MALIA RECIPE BOOK FOR CHRISTMAS SALE. The printing will be donated by Anna Texeira. 100% of the profits will go to Malia. In the words of Luana and Laverne, “We need recipes unique and origi-nal for our upcoming Malia Cook Book. We want new and/or those not com-monly found in other books or on the internet. We’re hoping to get it made so that we can sell it for Christmas.” Please give your recipes to Luana or Laverne or put them in the KOA Bowl (we’ll get the recipes to them). Let’s all get be-hind this first part of the project! We are deeply grateful to both Luana and Laverne for undertaking this major fundraiser. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION: Malia will begin our own Religious Education and Sacramental preparation pro-gram in September. The program is under the direction of the Religious Educa-tion Committee, Wendy Cortez, chair. Registration for the program will begin on August 15th. The actual classes will begin in September. If you have any questions regarding the program please see or call Wendy (934-7909). We will be publishing more information in the next few weeks. BAPTISMS: All inquiries regarding Baptisms and/or scheduling Baptisms should be directed to Samantha at 966-6350. We congratulate Matthew and his parents. Matthew will be baptized this Sunday.
