State of Kenya’s Horticulture Sector
Horticulture is the third largest foreign exchange earner and has
undergone a transformation over the last 50 years garnering
around 150 billion annually and contributes significantly to the
Kenyan economy. The industry provides employment opportuni-
ties to 350,000 directly and supports over six million livelihoods.
The key to the sector’s success can be attributed to the use
of the latest technology, availability of technical training and
easier access to markets.
To enhance the quality of our produce, industry associations and
other players have trained and supported producers and
exporters on requirements for international accreditations on
food safety and traceability.
Despite the challenges brought about by the COVID-19
pandemic, the Horticulture sector performed fairly well. Export
earnings for the year 2020 stood at Ksh.151Bn. Flowers earned
the country Ksh 108B, Fruits Ksh 18B while Vegetables earned
Ksh 24B.
However, a huge proportion of this earnings went to the
payment of air freights. The growers and exporters did not realise
the kind of profits they expected. There was a 5% improvement
on earnings as compared to 2019.

Fresh Produce Sector Deepens Relations with Kenya Airways
3
FPEAK CEO Mr. Hosea Machuki and KQ Cargo General Manager Mr. Dick Muriankiduring the certificate presentation
FPEAK and Kenya Airways have committed to increasing their areas
of collaboration, a move that will bolster the export of Kenya’s fresh
produce. The event was marked by an event held in Nairobi
with participation of Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Industrialization,
Trade and Enterprise Development, Hon. Betty C. Maina, CBS who
was the Chief Guest.
This partnership will therefore create synergies with other agencies
involved in the supply chain as per the local and international regu-
lations, improve the logistics of Kenya’s fresh produce to both the
local and international markets, thereby strengthening Kenya’s
position in a globally competitive marketplace.

Kenya Airways unveils its first “Preighter”
4
FPEAK, on 8th February 2021, joined the national carrier, Kenya Airways and other
stakeholders during the unveiling and commissioning of the first Re-purposed
Dreamliner. The repurposed passenger Boeing 787 to a cargo aircraft, is in response
to the depressed demand on the passenger side and the growing demand for air
cargo in Kenya and across the continent.
The repurposing included cabin modifications undertaken through December 2020
by the KQ Team in close collaboration with Avianor, a leader in the aerospace
industry. This will increase the capacity of FPEAK members to ship flowers, fruits and
vegetables to the international markets.
The event was graced by the CS Transport, Infrastructure Housing, Urban Develop-
ment and Public works, Mr. James Macharia and CS Industrialization, Trade and
Enterprise development, Hon. Betty C. Maina. FPEAK will continue to engage the
government and other industry stakeholders to ensure smooth running and
increased efficiency of businesses.

Fumigation Protocol of Flowers to the Australian Market
Dubai Expo 2020
5
In regards to the mandatory requirement that all
consignments of cut flowers and foliage to be allowed or
imported into Australia are free of live quarantine pests, there
is need to have a phytosanitary certificate from the National
Plant Protection Organization (NPPO) of the exporting country
proving compliance. Pest freedom will be able to be achieved
through either offshore treatment or through the use of a
systems approach (a combination of pest control measures in
production, transport and packing areas)
FPEAK, in collaboration with other industry stakeholders, is
developing Kenya’s fumigation protocol of fresh cut flowers.
This protocol would allow Kenya to export cut flowers to the
Australian market. The final protocol will be shared with
members once completed.
The Kenya Export Promotion & Branding Agency, in
collaboration with various stakeholders in the public and
private sector, is spearheading Kenya;s participation at the
World Expo Dubai 2020.
The theme of the expo is “connecting minds, creating the
future” while Kenya’s theme will be “Feel the Energy”. The Expo
is part of the flagship projects for the Ministry of Industrializa-
tion, Trade and Enterprise Development that seeks to enhance
Kenya’s market access milestones in the United Arab Emirates
(UAE) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
The Dubai Expo 2020 will take place from 1 st October 2021 to
31 st March 2022 with the Food, Agriculture and Livelihoods
themes taking place on 20 th to 26 th February 2022.
FPEAK encourages members to register in the B2B app which
will facilitate B2B meetings with market players during the
expo.
Kenya will launch the Dubai Expo 2020 on 7 th April 2021 in
Nairobi.

Minor Crop Extrapolation
7
FFPEAK is working with Pesticides Control Products Board
(PCPB), Agrochemicals Association of Kenya (AAK) and Kenya
Plant Health Inspectorate Services (KEPHIS) to facilitate and
guide on the extrapolation of agrochemicals for minor crops in
Kenya. COLEACP has committed to support the efficacy trials
through the NeXT Project of some of the products with the trials
slated to begin in March 2021.
The committee has prioritized the crops in regards to the need
for products and crop related groups. So far, PCPB has issued 37
efficacy trial permits for pest control products on minor crops
between 4th July 2020 and 31st December 2020 (Table 1).
During the same period, thirty efficacy trial reports for pest con-
trol products to be used on minor crops had been received from
accredited institutions by PCPB (Table 2).

1. Kenya Horticultural Market Access Program supported by TMEA
Through this project, FPEAK and stakeholders in the horticulture and
logistics industry have had visits to Eldoret international airport and
engaged with the county government, Kenya Airports Authority and cargo
handlers. The main objective is to unlock the potential of the airport to
operationalize the fresh produce cargo handling facility and have growers
in the region to utilize the airport for exports. Currently, some aircrafts
depart from the airport without any cargo once they offload inbound dry
cargo.
FPEAK and stakeholders from the horticulture and logistics industries, had
a meeting with the Lake Region Economic Bloc to seek partnership with
the county Governments in the region on production and marketing of
horticultural produce within the Lake Region Economic Bloc. The meeting
was attended by, Chairman, Council of Governors and Governor, County
Government of Kakamega, H.E. Hon. Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya, EGH and
the Governor, County Government of Kisumu, H.E. Prof. Anyang Nyong’o
among other stakeholders.
FPEAK and stakeholders met with the North Rift Economic Bloc counties
to assess the availability and facility readiness for fresh produce export from
the region. There was a round table meeting which brought together
farmers and value chain support services to look into opportunities and
bottlenecks within the sector which may hinder export of fresh produce in
the region.

2. Fresh Produce Promotional documentary Through the Kenya Horticulture Market Access Program, FPEAK developed a promotional video documentary which would help to
market Kenyan Horticulture produce in regional and international markets. The video can be found on https://youtu.be/0lCmjiWaVG0
3. COVID-19 SupportFPEAK, in collaboration with TMEA is supporting members in certification and recertification to various market standards which are
required to trade. Through this support, TMEA will be paying 50% of the total certification fee. A flier was sent to members and those
who responded will be benefitting from the support. Any similar opportunities will be communicated when they arise.
4. MarkUp ProjectFPEAK in collaboration with UNIDO is implementing the Markup project which aims to support mango, avocado, passion fruits,
beans, peas, groundnuts, and macadamia value chains in Kenya.
The CEO, Mr. Hosea Machuki, has been in a team which has visited Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Busia, Bungoma, Homabay, Siaya,
Nakuru, Makueni, Taita Taveta counties to check on the capacity of the counties to produce various crops for export. The project aims
to support various activities such as development of clean planting materials, small holder training on Good Agricultural Practices,
groups dynamics, KS 1758 among others.
