Dear Parents,

Happy New Year!

In more ways than one it has been a stormy start to the term and especially so for Form Five and the Upper Sixth who have been taking mock exams. These might have taken a little of the edge off the Christmas celebrations, but it is better to have a few traumas now than in June.

Most of the Upper Sixth now have all their university news and many have been very successful in attracting competitive offers for coveted places. Amongst those received so far include an offer to study Medicine (always tough to get) and one to study Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College. Six months of hard work should see them past the finishing post.

Not all Shebbearians have been freezing cold this weekend, I was delighted to receive some photos of Freddie Stevenson and Toby Biggs (right) who are playing cricket in Cape Town for the next two months as part of our exchange programme with the Newlands Cricket Academy. Meanwhile we heard that Shian Brathwaite (left) now 17, who came to Shebbear in 2014 has been picked for the West Indies

U19 cricket squad. They are the reigning world champions so this is a tremendous achievement.

Tomorrow is the Old Shebbearians’ Association Reunion Dinner, so former pupils will be gathering at the RAF Club in London for this very enjoyable annual event that draws together all the ages.

I am looking forward to meeting OS David Williams who recently made national headlines when he safely landed his Virgin airliner after the landing gear failed. No doubt Head Prefects Lucy Taylor and Harry Dymond are also looking forward to speaking to the assembled guests though their current thoughts about doing so might not be so joyous!

Poland Trip 2018We are delighted to announce that the next trip to Kraków, open to all current 4th, 5th and Lower 6th Form pupils, will be on 5th - 9th February 2018. The full itinerary, costs and payment schedule can be found at the end of this newsletter.

Once again the trip will include excursions to Auschwitz and Birkenau Concentration Camps, Oskar Schindler’s Factory, Kraków’s Old Town, Jewish Quarter, the Ghetto and a meeting with a Holocaust survivor. This includes many locations where Schindler’s List was filmed.

To provide a lighter balance, pupils will enjoy visits to the Wawel Royal Palace, Wieliczka Salt Mines, the historic Jagiellonian University of Science and Medicine - where they can stand in the study rooms of mathematician and astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus and Pope John Paul II - and Stalin’s communist suburb of Nowa Huta. Very popular on the last trip were the shopping excursions, restaurants, live music and dancing.

This is a wonderful enrichment trip which encompasses history, religion, ethics, psychology, science, music, art and culture - a full report of the previous trip can be found in the latest Shebbearian yearbook.

For more information or to confirm your booking please email Mark Charman on [email protected]

News from the Prep SchoolDear Parents,

I’m not sure when the statutory period for wishing people a happy new year runs out, but Happy New Year to you all anyway! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and that the start to 2017 has been a positive one. For the Furber family 2017 certainly promises to be a very memorable one, and I would like to take this opportunity if I may, to thank you for all the kind messages of goodwill and support I have received.

Despite the sudden drop in temperature and heavy rainfall, pupils and staff in the Prep School have returned from their holidays in fine spirit. It has been great to hear all their news and I have been impressed with the way that right across the school our children have settled quickly back into routines and are already working very hard.

In Year 6 this term we will be linking much of our learning in English, Art, Geography, RE and PHSCE to our History topic all about the 20th Century and I would really appreciate your help with this. It is my wish to continue to develop the Prep School Museum as a valuable learning tool. Whilst I appreciate that you may not have had much Victoriana lying around the house, seeing as for most of us the 20th Century becomes personal rather than ancient history, I was hoping that you may be able to loan the school some ‘treasures’ that we can share with the pupils. I promise, that they will be well looked after and returned at the end of the year.

Once all fixtures and educational visits are finalised, calendars will be sent out. However, we are already getting busy on the sports field. On Friday our pupils participated in a netball/hockey tournament at West Buckland School and on Sunday our brave runners will be battling the elements I’m sure in the latest Gliddon and Squire Cross Country race meeting at Northern Burrow. Good luck to all who are taking part.

Congratulations to Willow Forester in Prep 5 who has been a very busy girl and successfully completed her Grade 2 Ballet, Grade 1 Piano and Grade 2 Singing - all with merits!

Finally, I would like to welcome two new pupils and their families to the Prep School. James Horrocks and Charlotte (Lottie) Morton have both started in Prep 4 this term and have already settled in well and made some good friends.

Mike Furber

Happy New Year and welcome back!

Notes from the Music CentreCongratulations to all our pupils who took part in the initial rounds of the prestigious Rotary Young Musician 2017 Competition which was hosted here in our Music Centre. All the performances were of the highest standard. We wish Cameron and Rachel the best of luck in the regional finals.

William Shows Festive SpiritForm 1 pupil William had a busy time over the holidays. Along with his sister he put together a festive concert of singing and playing the keyboard for the residents of two local care homes. At Sunday Club William and others from the congregation put together shoe boxes filled with gifts for those less fortunate at Christmas. He also took his 89 year old nan for a ride on his quad bike so that she could enjoy seeing the places her walking frame won’t allow!

Flexi Boarding for Day PupilsFlexi boarding is becoming more and more popular and we are delighted to host a number of our day pupils on a regular basis, who join our boarding pupils to enjoy various evening and weekend activities with their friends.

One parent commented ‘if you need a quote to promote the flexi boarding, I think it’s a great service, Felix loves it and, with no local family support, it takes the stress out of finding reliable childcare if I

need it. It’s also a cost-effective option. But it’s now Felix’s preferred option, which is lovely. Thank you.’

For more information or to book flexi boarding please contact Naomi Giddy: [email protected]

A Word from the LibraryLate last year the writer and actor Simon Callow donated a large number of books from his personal library to the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals. As a member of the institution, our librarian, Mrs Welby, was able to obtain a number of these for our College Library. They were collected for us by her son Benjamin, an old Shebbearian, and delivered over the Christmas break.

The books and a CD, which will be of particular interest to English Literature students and budding actors, are available in the library.

Sister Rosemary Light At the end of last term we said goodbye to Sister Rosemary Light. Rosemary has been a central figure as our school nurse since 2001. Many students past and current will know her well and will have fond memories of her care.

Rosemary and Malcolm educated their children at Shebbear College and had

involvement in many areas of school life because of it. Portia (Birmingham - Law); Brett (Plymouth – Environmental Science); Jed

(Keele - Geology), and latterly Rob Rushton – Taylor (Birmingham - Media) have all been significant personalities in our community during Rosemary’s tenure. The whole family have been prominent in our lives, be it in the classroom, on the sports field, or over several years on the Ten Tors Challenge. The family have hosted boarders on their farm and many boarders will have great memories of swimming or rowing on the family lakes. The boarders have also benefitted from Rosemary’s commitment to the annual Boarders’ Extravaganza, as well as her involvement in ballet and swimming activities over the years.

Our boarding community, day pupils and staff have all been looked after at some point, and we all thank Rosemary for her dedication in running our school Medical Centre and the care and attention she has shown during her time here. We all fondly wish her the very best for the future.

Netball

U14 Netball v OkehamptonIn the first game of the season the girls battled hard on a very cold and windy afternoon. With wind in their ears the team struggled to get a grip of the match early on as Okehampton dominated possession.

In the second and third quarters the team played better with some neat passing on the counter attack from Bess Scambler, Laura Priest and Billy Powell, allowing Ellerker Singleton to capitalise with some superb shooting from distance to keep Shebbear in the game.

Going into the final quarter the score was 12-8 but unfortunately Okehampton once again applied the pressure and there wasn’t enough time for a Shebbear come back. Other highlights included

Amelia Vogan making her debut for the side and some excellent defensive work by Poppy Daniel.Final Score 20-10.

Arron Steel

U15 Netball v OkehamptonA good start to the season for the girls. From the start they confidently moved the ball down the court with some great play from Amy Taylor, Sophie Gillies and Cara Phillips in attack.

Only playing 8 minute quarters meant that as the girls were getting into their stride it was quarter time. The defence made some great interceptions with Jess Biggs and Lauren Wivell making it difficult for the opposition to get the ball into their shooters.

In the second half the girls continued to work well together with Connie Gillies making some brilliant interceptions and Anna Walter shooting really well. Well done girls a great start to the season. 17-5 win.

Hannah Little

U16 Netball v HolsworthyThe U16 netball team started their season with some very tough competition. Holsworthy won the North Devon tournament last term, so the girls knew they had a lot of work to do, but were ready for a challenge.

Holsworthy managed to gain a 10 goal lead in the first quarter, however our best play was yet to come. In the second quarter Shebbear played brilliantly to triple their score from the first quarter, and limit how many goals Holsworthy scored. Unfortunately Holsworthy were to strong, and won the match in the end, 10-41.

Well done the Shebbear U16 as a whole, as they fought the whole way through and did not give up. A special well done to Olivia Rolls who stepped up from U15 to play GK, and played brilliantly with many interceptions. Also Holly Nancekivell who deservedly won player of the match.

Kate Burges

FootballThe 1st XI played their opening match of the season this week and travelled to Mount Kelly where the home side managed to salvage an unlikely draw in the last few minutes.

Man of the match Patrick Marks put the 1st XI in front, midway through the first half and then scored a second after Mount Kelly had equalised. A scrappy second goal for the home side, saw the teams level at half time, despite the dominance shown by Shebbear in terms of possession.

The team went ahead once again with a neat finish by Stuart Williams and there should have been more goals as we continued to dominate, but a defensive error late on was costly and so we had to settle for a 3-3 draw.

The Future of Jobs

Bank of England Governor, Mark Carney, has stated that the fourth industrial revolution (4IR), which includes developments in artificial intelligence and machine-learning, robotics, nanotechnology, 3-D printing, and genetics and biotechnology, is already having a significant impact on global labour markets and the nature of work. Carney’s view, that every technological revolution mercilessly destroys jobs and livelihoods well before the new ones emerge, echoes research by the University of Oxford and Citi Bank which predicts that over 50% of administrative and white collar office jobs jobs are at risk due to technological change and automation.

However, Carney also flagged potential economic benefits of technology arguing that, ‘in an age where anyone can produce anything anywhere through 3-D printing, where anyone can broadcast their performance globally or sell to China whatever the size of their business, there is an opportunity for mass employment through mass creativity’ and that developing ‘technology platforms such as taskrabbit, Alibaba, etsy, and Sama can help give smaller-scale producers and service providers a direct stake in global markets. Smaller scale firms can by-pass big corporates and engage in a form of artisanal globalisation; a revolution that could bring cottage industry full circle’. IF conferences for school staff

4IR - implications for young people and their futures IET, Savoy Place, London: 12th May 2017

The fourth industrial revolution (4IR) heralds a global employment landscape characterized and accelerated by artificial intelligence, hyper-connectivity and new ways of working.

This conference brings together inspirational and thought-provoking speakers from schools, higher education and the world of work, including:

• Jonathan Black – Director of Careers, University of Oxford • Keith Budge- incoming Chair of HMC and Headmaster of Bedales • Neil Carmichael (MP) – Chair, Education Select Committee • Peter Cheese – Chief Executive, Chartered Institute of Personnel Development • Bob Gilworth – Director of Careers, University of London • Eve Jardine-Young - Principal of Cheltenham Ladies College • Baroness Estelle Morris – Chair of Strategy, Institute of Effective Education

who will look at how best the school pupils of today can become successful, smart and well-adjusted adults in a technological world that offers challenge and opportunity in equal measure, by addressing questions including:

• What are the implications of 4IR for young people and their futures? • What are the characteristics and attributes that a young person needs in order to

function successfully in the 4IR world? • How can schools prepare young people for a world in which traditional roles are

disappearing and where learning new skills, sharing ideas and working across sectorial boundaries is becoming the norm?

This conference has been designed for heads and senior teachers, governors and trustees, pastoral leaders, careers advisers, heads of sixth form and higher education coordinators. The full conference programme and booking details will be available later this month via the IF website (http://inspiringfutures.org.uk/events/calendar) or by contacting Emma Whiteley: [email protected]

International Study and Work – Why? What? How? Montreux: 22nd, 23rd & 24th March 2017

Today’s increasingly global employment landscape and rapidly changing working practices present high achieving young people with a wide range of opportunities about where they study and work.

International study, be it a full degree or for a semester or a year, is viewed favourably by top employers who value students who have broadened their world perspective, built their self-confidence and self-reliance and developed networking, cultural awareness and language skills.

Working internationally is a definite career boost and in many cases is necessary to reach a senior level. Employers actively look for professionals who not only have excellent skills, but also have a global perspective.

Keeping up to date with what is available and what skills employers require in the global economy is a challenge for those involved in advising young people.

There are a few places left on this conference, which has been designed for careers advisers, heads of sixth form and higher education coordinators.
