From the GM

Cabramatta Confidential Issue No:50

Well we find ourselves into Mid May all of a sudden, where has the year gone?

The 2016 Cabramatta Cup has been run and won by a young up and coming talent in Austin Bautista from Bonnie Doon with an outstanding score of 66 four under par. He won the event from a three way tie on 71. Austin wins $1,000 voucher kindly donated by Tom Stephens Jnr of Tomkat Roofing.

The prestigious and highly contested Cock O’ Walk 2 Ball Match Play Final has also recently been completed with Noren Ung and Tony Young beating Kevin Boggs and Brian Bissett 5/4. On the subject of golf, congratulations to the Greens Staff for the way the course has been presented. I have received many compliments well done guys. A camera mounted to a drone is currently filming each hole, this will accompany a hole by hole description, I think this will sit very nicely on our website.

What a huge Mother’s Day weekend with 640 patrons for Sunday lunch and dinner. This followed a private function for 160 on Saturday night that also proved to be an outstanding success.

The Club’s Auditors have just concluded their Annual Audit. With all the improvements and repairs both on and off the course over the past twelve months, I expect to finish a little in the red after we write off $360,000 in depreciation and approximately $54,000 in long service and annual accruals. Very much so the Club is in a healthy position to capitalise on our renovations and most of the repairs although greatly needed are going to be once only. The Club’s Annual General Meeting is set for Monday 29th August and a gentle reminder that it is an election year for the Directors positions.

Work will commence soon on trimming back the overhanging branches to Cabramatta Road, once the necessary approvals are granted we will be straight into it.

The Member’s Badge Draw has now had its limit raised from $1,000 to $2,000, just another reason to come along to Spin N Win on a Friday night with heaps of prizes on offer.

A fair bit has happened on the Course so please refer to the Captains Report for that update.

The Club has just recently purchased fifteen new Yamaha petrol golf carts, this has increased our fleet to fifty so a 100 person Corporate Day can easily be handled without having to borrow carts from outside sources. Each of these new carts have been fitted with a rear bag protector to enable protection from the elements.

The Club also just completed its 2016 poker machine upgrade thus providing the latest and greatest games on the market. Net gaming revenue for 2015/2016 is up a staggering 25%.

Our current marketing campaign kicked off in March mainly on face book and google, the areas we are targeting are social golf, Club Membership, Corporate Golf, our catering facilities, golfing clinics and our newly renovated Clubhouse. I am very encouraged with the traffic on the course and the other areas are receiving good enquiries so benefits should soon flow onto our trading accounts. We have just had Carlton Black installed to our range, why not give it a try.

Until next edition swing slow and stay healthy.

From the Captain

Well it has been a very busy time out on the course with cleaning up after storm damage and getting the course ready in time for 2 of our major events being the Golden Wattle Cup and the Cabra Cup.

Thanks to the Green Staff and the volunteers for your efforts during this busy time.

The Lone Wolf has been decided with the winner being Sophak Chen defeating Matthew Smith on the 19th Hole. This was a tough match and congratulations go to both players.

The Golden Wattle Cup was won by Washington Alvarez (13) with a 68nett. The scratch winner being Adam Wadick with 86.

The Cabra Cup was a great success with 172 starters, sadly the last 3 groups had to battle the dark as well, but they did finish with the help of some much needed light from my phone. Thanks to the Proshop, Matt & Michelle for their friendliness towards all visitors and members and getting the players off in time and Bellissimo’s for the great service during halfway.

Some interesting stats from the Cabra Cup are:

172 players for the cup with 95 being visitors, 2 dropouts and the rest being members.

Congratulations to both Austin Bautista from Bonnie Doon winning the cup with a 66 and Steve Nelson winning nett with 68nett.

Next on the calendar is the Awesome Foursomes, good luck to all players.

Until next time, remember if you see me around the traps come and have a chat.

“The only sure rule in golf is he who has the fastest cart never has to play the bad lie.

Annon

News from the Green Staff

The weather just keeps getting better, I think it was the warmest April in 60 years or so, and very little rain to speak off. And of course with these perfect conditions the golf course should look pretty good, which I think it, does. The turf has held its colour and the greens are firm and fast, which can be achieve much easier at this time of year, opposed to the hot humid conditions throughout summer, so it’s a great time to play golf.

We have managed to finish the 3

rd fairway bunker complex, with the

remaining bunker essentially being refurbished, with new drainage being installed and at the same time lowering the base of the bunker, and new sand being placed in it. I’m happy with the result, I think the whole area has improved remarkably and hopefully it can catch some of the longer hitters, making it tougher to get to the green in two if you get caught in it. The gum trees on the right side of 16th fairway were infested with worms as can be seen by the photo as well as the roots encroaching on to the green. From all reports, and some great feedback from visitors, the Cabra Cup went off very well, once again with the help of the change of timing this year and the fantastic weather conditions. Next year we will en-deavour to take it to a higher level again. In the lead

up to the cup, with the assistance of 3 casuals for two weeks, we were able to weed, prune and mulch 95% of the gardens on course, including the car park, and this made a huge difference in lifting the appearance of the golf course. This is such a large task to undertake and we are looking to do our best to maintain the gardens to as higher standard as possible all year round, not just for big events like that. As we move into the cooler months please try to dry carts sensible around green and tees and try to stay on paths as much as possible, especially when the ground starts to become wet for a prolonged period of time.

Enjoy your golfing, and the course.

Steve Kazurinsky

Course Superintendent.

A very wet year which disrupted golfing activities and which often caused drastically reduced social club and

member attendances. As a result all sources of revenue were affected, particularly with the enforced cancellations

of bookings by social clubs. A Trading profit of £1,788 was achieved which was down on last year by some

£6,000.

The major focus for the Committee was the formulation of plans for the design, financing and erection of a new

clubhouse. A special Building Sub-Committee was formed early in the project and they spent much of their time

visiting other clubs, inspecting new clubhouses, discussing financing, and examining the trading results achieved

following completion. An Extra-Ordinary

General Meeting was held in February and attended by 213 members and approval was given to proceed.

Work continued on course improvements with the purchase of new machinery and renovation of a number of

greens. Following consultation with the Forestry Commission, a tree planting programme was commenced.

Social functions continued to be well patronised.

The Major Pennants side was successful in winning the 1963 NSWGA Group 2 Pennant Series completing their

matches

undefeated. The team was: R. Watson (Captain), A.Cross, R. L. Moore, A. Pilon, M. Reid, J. Ryan, D. Sharp, J.

A Scottish Jew decided to retire and take up golf, so he applied for membership at a local golf

club.

About a week later he received a letter that his application had been rejected.

He went to the club to inquire as to why.

Secretary: You are aware that this is a Scottish golf club?

Scot: Aye, but I am as Scottish as you are, ma'am, my name is MacTavish.

Secretary: Do you know that on formal occasions we wear a kilt?

Scot: Aye, I do know, and I wear a kilt too.

Secretary: You are also aware, that we wear nothing under the kilt?

Scot: Aye, and neither do I.

Secretary: Are you also aware, that the members sit naked in the steam room?

Scot: Aye, I also do the same.

Secretary: But you are a Jew?

Scot: Aye, I be that.

Secretary: So, being Jewish, you are circumcised, is that correct?

Scot: Aye, I be that, too.

Secretary: I am terribly sorry, but the members just would not feel comfortable sitting in the

steam room with you, since your privates are different from theirs.

Scot: Ach, I know that you have to be a Protestant to march with the Orangemen.

And I know that you have to be a Catholic to join the Knights of Columbus.

But this is the first time I've heard that you have to be a complete prick to join a golf club.

Tim and Janice met on a singles cruise and Tim fell head over heels for her.

When they discovered they lived in neighbouring cities only a few miles

apart Tim was ecstatic. He immediately started asking her out when they

got home.

Within a couple of weeks, Tim had taken Janice to dance clubs,

restaurants, concerts, movies and museums. Tim became convinced that

Janice was indeed his soul mate and true love. Every date seemed better

than the last.

On the one-month anniversary of their first dinner on the cruise ship, Tim

took Janice to a fine restaurant. While having cocktails and waiting for

their salad, Tim said, "I guess you can tell I'm very much in love with you.

I'd like a little serious talk before our relationship continues to the next

stage."

"So, before I get a box out of my jacket and ask you a life-changing

question, it's only fair to warn you, I'm a total golf nut. I play golf, I read

about golf, I watch golf on TV. In short, I eat, sleep, and breathe golf. If

that's going to be a problem for us, you'd better say so now!"

Janice took a deep breath and responded, "Tim, that certainly won't be a

problem. I love you as you are and I love golf too; but, since we're being

totally honest with each other, you need to know that for the last five years

I've been a hooker."

"Oh wow! I see," Tim replied. He looked down at the table, was quiet for a

moment. Deep in serious thought he added, "You know, it's probably

because you're not keeping your wrists straight when you hit the ball."
