A Message from Your President

Greetings ASTD South Central Wisconsin members and guests!

I am Kimberly Frederickson, your new ASTD‐SCWC President for 2012. I’m excited to welcome you to a new year and a new Chapter Board of Directors. We’re look‐ing forward to continuing the momentum from last year bringing you great pro‐gramming and exceptional value for our chapter members! This is my commit‐ment to you as President. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my predecessor, Tracy Nelson. Tracy has served the ASTD‐SCWC Chapter as a Board Member during her most recent terms as VP of Marketing in 2009, President Elect in 2010, President in 2011 and now, as Past President for 2012. Her drive and commitment to our chapter’s growth and success has paved a great path for our future and given me a wonderful challenge to aspire to as I succeed her. This is Tracy’s second period of service as she also served from 2000‐2004. Thank you, Tracy, for your service, support and commit‐ment to ASTD‐SCWC! In the coming months you’ll be hearing more about the things your new Board is doing for you. The New Year is a time of transition for us, as for many. The New Year is often a time for resolutions about things we hope to change, hope to ac‐complish…the things we wish for ourselves for the year. Mark Twain said, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” This year I challenge you to engage in your ASTD South Central Wisconsin Chapter! We al‐ways say our chapter is only as strong as our membership. If you’re not a member, become one. If you are a member, get more involved. Sail away from the safe harbor of limiting yourself to event participation and become a volunteer, too. Catch the winds in your sail and share your expertise by becoming an event speaker. Explore, dream and discover through monthly programming and our 2012 Learning Summit: Learn Inspired. Live Inspired. ASTD‐SCWC has something for everyone!

Throughout this year, I would love to hear from you! I welcome your thoughts, questions, comments at [email protected]. 2012 promises to be a great year, and I look forward to seeing you at our many events throughout the year.

What is the Power of 2?

When ASTD members join both the national organization and their chapter, they choose to be knowledge leaders in the workplace learning and performance (WLP) profession and change makers in their own back-yard. Joint membership offers WLP professionals a unique opportunity to connect with local, national, and in-ternational professionals. Joint members can learn about trends in the field, and gain access to research, prin-ciples, practices, and templates they can apply directly to impacting organizational results, their community, and advancing their career. Many of our chapter members belong to the national ASTD organization as well. For information on national membership, you may call 1-800-628-2783 or visit the National ASTD website at www.astd.org. Discounted rates are available when you add a National Membership to your local one. Ask about "The Power of Two" to save $20 off your national membership, and make sure to use our ChIP code (5089) when joining.

Are you taking advantage of the many benefits of becoming a member of the South Central Wisconsin Chapter (SCWC) of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD)? Mem‐bership is an excellent way for workplace learning & perform‐ance professionals to stay up to date with the latest industry trends, build their professional development, and network with other folks who work in similar positions. Members of the ASTD‐SCWC enjoy exclusive cost saving oppor‐tunities such as: reduced annual renewal dues, discounted fees for our monthly “Learning Changing Developing” programming, free admission to our Summer Saving Series (June, July, and August programs), and a free pass to one of our other regular monthly programs. These are high level programming events that are based on the ASTD Competency Model Areas of Exper‐tise. The ASTD‐SCWC also provides our members with excellent re‐sources like our quarterly online newsletter “The Connector”, our annual membership directory, and access to the special member’s only sections of our new chapter website. Please e‐mail Dylan Drobny, our VP of Membership, if you would like more information about the many benefits of membership at [email protected].

The Afternoon Keynote and Workshop with Lance Secretan Our Keynote, Lance Secretan, has helped organizations such as Humana, First Command, ATB Financial, Ontario Chamber of Commerce and Greater Louisville, Inc. create the ulti‐mate mission statement; which Lance calls The One DreamTM.

During Lance Secretan’s Keynote, he will conduct a workshop leveraging his book The Spark, The Flame, and The Torch and lead us through a workshop to help us identify steps to take to determine your One DreamTM. Each at‐tendee will receive a copy of his book. You can learn more about this at www.secretan.com and read case studies specific to organizations Lance has partnered with. Here what others are saying about Lance Secretan. "Lance presents his material in a most unique and dynamic way that lends itself to getting people's attention who may not have otherwise been interested, and specifically, as a result, tapping the potential of all involved. The les‐sons he shared, are and will continue to be, part of the reason Medtronic and each of us at Medtronic are success‐ful in what we do."

Vern Dale‐Johnson, Director of Planning and Business Development, Medtronic of Canada Limited

"Of all the speakers I have been exposed to in my life, you are, without the shadow of a doubt, the one who has moved me and will change my life forever."

Isabelle Adjahi, Senior Director, Investor Relations and Communications/Directrice sénior, Relations avec les investisseurs et communications, Axcan Pharma

"Once you began your presentation, the energy in the room completely switched. Suddenly, you were talking about things that truly mattered —how do we create inspiring organizations, what do we really want for our lives? People sat up, they stopped fiddling about on their phones. I could see your words were affecting them deeply and they wanted to hear more. It was captivating for all of us. I learned a great deal, not just more about the prin‐ciples behind The Spark, the Flame and the Torch, but what It means to passionately convey those ideas and con‐nect with others".

Keir Overton

For additional details on the keynote and workshop, you can visit www.secretan.com/keynotes_torch.php To learn more about the event and to register, visit http://astd‐scwc.wildapricot.org/inspired.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2012 Learning Summit. Get Inspired!
