Message from the Principal

It was a bit of a chilly week wasn’t it?! The ‘Beast from the East’ definitely arrived on the Isle of Dogs! But the children’s learning was not dampened as we continued to wok hard this week and even enjoyed a snowy break time in the park! It was great to see all the children dressed up for World Book Day, with so many amazing characters turning up in school. Gangster Granny, Tintin, Pinocchio, Mary Poppins, Harry Potter and many other favourites from the Literacy world were represented . Thank you for helping to create some wonderful costumes. Congratulations to all the class winners. On Thursday our Year 6 children found out what Secondary school they were offered and I am pleased that so many of the children have chosen to remain with Canary Wharf College to continue their education. They will be moving in to new temporary premises at Selsdon Way in September. You can check the progress of the building works on the Secondary newsletter that you can find on our website. Stay safe and warm over the weekend.

TRUST NEWS We are pleased to inform all parents of children from years 3 to 8 that we have booked an e-safety advice session to take part in the East Ferry school hall on 22nd March, 830am -10.45am. The session will be delivered by Catherine Rushforth Associates and will cover all aspects of e-safety. What a fantastic day we had in Year One for World Book

Day! We all got dressed up in some amazing outfits to show

off different book characters. The day was also jam packed

with lots of fun activities for us to do. We read ‘The Highway

Rat’ story and completed a ‘WANTED’ poster. We wrote a

new page of the book and enjoyed acting out parts of the

story. We also had a book scavenger hunt and wrote about

the character we dressed up as. We loved our silent reading

session and looking at different picture books. We cannot

wait for next year’s World Book Day!

We had a wonderful World Book Day with adults and children

diving deep into books to inspire their costumes. In our Maths

learning we have been revising time with 5 minute intervals

and have been practicing converting time from analogue to

digital clocks. Even though this is really tricky, we’ve learnt

some strategies to help us solve complicated word problems.

We practiced writing 5 minute intervals on the clock to help us

work out the times. We also had fun playing some ‘Time’

board games to practice our skills.

This week we have been looking at the story of

Rumpelstiltskin. We have been exploring different names

and what they might mean, as well as trying to make up our

own funny names. We have been adding and subtracting

using a number line and bags of gold. We have been able to

take our learning cues from the winter weather, looking at

ice and collecting it - only to find that it turned to water in

our warm classroom! We have been exploring icicles in the

railway arches at Millwall park and we have built a

snowman. Some of us have thrown our first snowballs, a

real life landmark!, We also enjoyed World Book Day with a

glorious costume parade!

On Wednesday we celebrated World Book Day, where children and staff became a character in a book for a day! Everyone looked fantastic. We looked at Polly Dunbar’s ‘Penguin’ story and attempted our very own poem about memories of someone. We role played freeze frames from the scenes in the book and retold the story through the eyes of the penguin. For Art we made happy hats to cheer ourselves and others up!

This week Year 4 have been learning about Haiku poems and

are excited about writing our own poems using the 4 seasons

as a subject. We will be publishing these in an anthology on

Amazon! We have been working hard all week to make our

poems perfect and are looking forward to creating amazing art

to add to our anthology too! In Maths we were mind-boggled

by fractions and decimals. On Wednesday, we all put in the

most amazing effort dressing up for World Book Day and loved

getting into character. Although, we think the highlight of this

week has definitely been playing in the huge amounts of

snow!

We have begun studying a new sculptor in our Art lessons- Alexander Calder. We look forward to recreating our own versions of his hanging mobile sculptures. We had so much fun on World Book Day - congratulations to the Year 5 winners on their fantastic outfits! Finally, we enjoyed playing in the snow (but are wishing for a slightly warmer weekend).

During our DT lessons both 6RL and 600 have been sewing monster puppets using felt fabric. In Music we chose a picture book and created a scene from the book using musical instruments and drama to tell the story. The highlight of our week was World Book Day! We dressed up as our favourite characters and enjoyed taking part in workshops with Year Five. Overall it was a very enjoyable week not only because of World Book Day but because it has been snowing all week!

LUNCH BOX IDEAS

Did you know chips don’t have to be made form potato? Cucumbers, peppers,

apples and carrots can all be cut in to ‘chips’ for the children to snack on.

You can also provide a tasty dip for your

chips, like hummus or tzatziki!

CAMERA CLUB

Camera Club ventured outside to get some great shots in the snow!

Thank you to everyone who

donated to the cash for clothes

collection on Monday.

We raised £175 towards Easter

activities, and the larger toys and

households items were given to a

local homeless charity.

We would like to welcome Sophia

Abe-Ly (3JT) and Alison McLean

(RAB) who have stepped up this

term as class representative.
