2018Shalom Austin Impact Report

IT ALL STARTS WITH YOU

Dear Friends,

Every day, your Shalom Austin Annual Campaign gift makes a difference to our community. This report gives you a taste of the meaningful work your dollars support, from the key service programs that help those in need to the new initiatives that create fun and positive experiences for newcomers.

The stories within are inspiring and they’re only a fraction of the impact our Annual Campaign has—there are so many other programs, services and special events that mean so much to our community members. Your dollars, alongside the gifts of your neighbors and friends, impact our community both in Austin and overseas, both in teaching our traditions and our history and building new relationships and new paths forward.

Inside, you will find the Shalom Austin Celebration of Jewish Giving which acknowledges the individual and collective philanthropic impact of our generous donors. And we believe, to fully appreciate the breadth of Shalom Austin’s work, you have to see it for yourself—so please come by, join in and know that without your support, none of this work would be possible.

Abby Rapoport Shalom Austin Board Chair

Shalom Austin is the hub of Jewish life in Central Texas, and with Jewish values at the center of all that we do, we’re here to help families and individuals of all backgrounds thrive.

Our integrated approach — with the Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family Service, Jewish Federation, and Jewish Foundation working in partnership — gives us a deep understanding of local needs.

With programs that serve both Jewish and non-Jewish people in Austin and Central Texas, Shalom Austin fosters a vibrant community that supports families, develops leaders, and strengthens our city.

Our work is only possible through the generosity of supporters like you. Gifts to Shalom Austin’s Annual Campaign, Generations Campaign, and the Jewish Foundation provide critical funding to sustain our programs, build out our campus, and ensure a strong future for the Jewish community. Every gift makes a difference.

At the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year, children in the Early Childhood Program’s four pre-k classes discussed what it meant to give to charities, to have righteous or just behavior, and to be active members of a community. It was important to all the educators to ensure children learned and understood the life lesson that actions always speak louder than words.

The ECP serves children from six weeks through five years old in a Jewish, values-based curriculum full of nature, provocations and explorations that highlight students as both capable and integral to the construction of their own learning.

“Andrea and I love the ECP, and appreciate the care, love, and philosophy

you bring to our daughter, and all her schoolmates. Thank you for continuing

to test yourselves, and for reminding us what a great choice we’ve made trusting

you with our precious child.”

YAD helps young people develop as leaders, and find community as they build the foundation for the rest of their lives. The Annual Campaign funds many of the YAD activities, including the YAD Jewish & Newish event, which brings young professionals together to network, and the relaunched J-Lead program to train future leaders.

“When I moved to Austin, I was looking to meet friends through the Jewish community. The Young Adult Division really helped me achieve my goals – I’ve referred six people to work, I’ve been on three committees, I have two bridesmaids I met through YAD, I have one mentor I met through J-Lead, and one husband I met through YAD! I’d say that’s a success.”

The day after 11 people were killed and more injured at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue at an October 27, 2018 Shabbat service, Shalom Austin, local congregations, Anti-Defamation League and other Jewish organizations organized a vigil of peace and healing on the Dell Jewish Community Campus.

As one of the largest gatherings on the campus, 650+ people filled the JCC Community Hall, about 150 more spilled outside the building onto the lawn, where we created a second vigil.

Providing for People in NeedDespite a common perception that hunger is not a significant issue within the Jewish community,

there are in fact many Jews in Central Texas who face economic challenges and could benefit from

regular access to free and donated food. To address this need, JFS developed a food pantry available to

members of the Jewish community.

JFS also works with people who have limited mobility and are unable to easily get to a grocery store or

restaurant.

Because of your donations to the food pantry and Annual Campaign, JFS staff is able to deliver much-

needed food and personal care items directly to these clients’ homes.

though they are dealing with these terminal illnesses, you can still have a positive attitude and connect with

them in a different way. If I look at everything from the perspective of

Our Annual Campaign directs funds to local and regional partner programs and humanitarian and community building efforts in Israel and overseas. Shalom Austin seeks to develop Jewish leaders, help Jewish communities grow, and allow people to reconnect with their Jewish roots.

Through Jewish Federations of North America and our other partner agencies, primarily the American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), Jewish Agency for Israel and World ORT, we help Jews in Israel and over 70 countries across the globe.

Together we work to alleviate hunger and hardship, rescue Jews in danger and create lasting connections to Jewish life.

The group spent an entire day with the Austin Jewish Academy, taking part in a chocolate seder, learning Israeli dances, singing and sharing music, and creating a connection as the Israeli educators’ classes Skyped with the AJA students. In addition, students from Kids Connection in the Youth and Teen program learned Israeli dancing and enjoyed practicing with the visiting educators.

Developing Jewish Leaders

“It was an honor and privilege to experience first-hand how our local dollars are helping the Jews of Europe and the Former Soviet Union lead a more vibrant Jewish life filled with a sense of community, love of Israel

and education which produces an embracing of culture and tradition.”

– Heilla Lain, Shalom Austin Leader

Rabbi Daniel Septimus, Jill May, Heilla Lain and Dan Kraus attended the annual Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) FRD Leadership Mission to Berlin and Budapest to understand and grasp the impact of our collective overseas support of Jewish communities through our historic partners, Jewish Agency, American Joint Distribution Committee and World ORT.

They left deeply inspired and impacted by their experiences. There is a resurgence of Jewish life taking place in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union that could not have been fathomed following the Holocaust and during Communism. Now, nearly 30 years after the fall of Communism, residents of countries throughout Central and Eastern Europe are rediscovering their Jewish roots and rebuilding Jewish life with great pride and enthusiasm.

Dan, Jill, Heilla and Daniel participated with over 150 community leaders and professionals from 34 Jewish Federations in North America for a “kippah walk” in Berlin to show solidarity with Jewish residents of Germany. They were joined by German Jewish and Muslim students who are courageously confronting growing hate against the Jewish community.

As the first capital campaign since the Dell Jewish Community Campus opened nearly 20 years ago, Generations is an ambitious effort to fund the expansion and renovation of our campus, the heart of Jewish life in Austin and an important community resource. Our new, sophisticated facilities will house programs funded by the Annual Campaign and provide additional space to accommodate our rapidly growing community.

By June 2019, thanks to your generosity, the community raised 92% of its $25 million goal. Together, we can ensure Austin Jews always have a place to go, a place to grow up, and a place to call their own.

Jewish Austinites are set to enjoy first-rate learning spaces and programming through the newly established Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center for Jewish Culture and Education at Shalom Austin, created through a $1 million gift from the Rapoport Family to the Generations Campaign.

The Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center will have a transformative impact on Jewish life in Austin by enabling the construction of technology-rich learning spaces in the soon-to-be expanded Jewish Community Center. It also provided seed money to hire Rachel Stern to serve as the center’s chief learning and engagement officer and grow creative, cutting-edge, collaborative Jewish learning and enrichment programming on the Dell Jewish Community Campus and throughout Central Texas.

Bernard and Audre Rapoport, of blessed memory, lived in Waco, Texas, where they were active in their local Jewish community as well national Jewish organizations.

Building Our Future

“My hope is we can be a convener for education efforts and that it can then be a great resource to all the people in the community

looking for ways to define Jewish living and be a community and find learning communities and resources—to have Jewish homes and

lead Jewish lives but with the freedom to identify what that means to them. Sometimes figuring that out requires some education; it

requires some help and support.”

54 SHALOM AUSTIN 2018 IMPACT REPORT

In 2018, Shalom Austin selected 13 local Jewish organizations to receive annual grants totaling more than $150,000. These grants provide critical support and much needed funding for community programming, events, projects and initiatives in categories including arts and culture, business, camp, community, education, Israel, philanthropic, religious and social.

The awards were selected based on the need for these services in the Jewish community and for their ability to provide opportunities for people to come together in the service of one another. Together these grants to nonprofit organizations will strengthen Jewish values and a culture of caring and connecting in Austin and Central Texas.

The 2018 grant award recipients include:
