ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT topics for Ohigan is “dana.” It can be

translated as “generosity” or “giving.” It

is the first of the “Six Paramitas” or “Six

Perfections” that form the basis of bo-

dhisattva practice. As Buddhists we are

often encouraged to try and perform

dana ourselves.

Dana can take many forms – it

can be monetary, or acts beneficial to

others. At the Buddhist Church of

Oakland we even have a Dana Fund –

moneys that can be used to help people

in need. This financial assistance is giv-

en anonymously – in other words, you

may donate money to the fund and yet

never hear about who received it.

But this brings up an interesting as-

pect of Dana. As noted above, “parami-

ta” means “perfection” – in other words,

the perfect practice of giving. Here, it

often means that the generosity of a bo-

dhisattva is selfless, purely for the ben-

efit of the recipient with no thought of

oneself. So actually, giving to the Dana

Fund is an interesting way to try and ac-

complish this – you may receive thanks

from the Buddhist Church of Oakland,

AFTER SEVERAL CANCELLATIONS the Momiji group finally came together

on Thursday, July 18.  The day turned

out to be a luncheon meet with a birth-

day cake honoring two of our ladies.

Our Miss Patti also had returned from

her trip to Istanbul, so we all enthusi-

astically went into our Yoga exercises

under her able leadership per usual. It

was just so nice to see everyone back

together again.

After lunch a video titled, “And

They Came For Us”, was presented. This

video was loaned to the group by Ms.

Susan Tanisawa.  The story depicted

the evacuation of Japanese Americans

during World War II. For many of us in-

volved in the movement, it was a sad

reminder of the treatment towards our

people. We thank Susan for her Dana.

At this time we have members to

thank for their Dana. Ms. Teru Shibata

for the tasty plums, Ms. Fuzy Yoshi-

da for handling the food, and to Ms.

Joanne Makishima for her donation

of a CD player to the our organiza-

tion. Thank you to the ladies for their

kindness and thoughtfulness to the

Momiji kai.

Our next meet will probably

be on Thursday, August 15, 2019.

You will be notified. n

actual beneficiary.

There is another important aspect

of Dana that Shinran Shonin brings to

our attention as well. In Chapter Four

of the Tannisho, Shinran is reported as

saying the following: “It is extremely

difficult… to accomplish the saving of

others exactly as one wishes.” Maybe I

don’t have sufficient resources, maybe

my ego gets in the way, maybe I mis-

understand the situation – the poten-

tial problems are almost endless.

And yet, we can still try. We may

find that we wish to perform a gener-

ous, compassionate act. It could be

something we have thought about

for a while, or it could occur sponta-

neously. If you feel so moved, I say go

for it! But also be prepared to engage

in self-reflection – you may find ego

operating, which is fine – it is actually

probably impossible to escape the ego

by our own effort. But realizing this

omnipresent ego, we may actu-

ally realize that the compassion is

actually coming to us from Amida

Buddha. Recognizing this embrace, we

may wish to “pay it back” – and Dana

could be the way to do it! n

A THROWING ERROR BY White Sox shortstop leads to a walk

off run by A’s pinch hitter Chad Pin-

der. Game over… the A’s sweep the

White Sox! This was the exciting finish

to a fun-filled outing to the Oakland

Coliseum on July 14. The day started

with a relaxing tailgate barbecue in

the Coliseum parking lot. About 70

members enjoyed brats and hot

dogs grilled by master griller, John

Minamoto. A variety of green salads,

potato salad, potato chips, fruit, and

desserts topped off the menu.

Thank you very much to those

that brought snacks to share. Thank

you also to Ron and June Nomura, Jon

and Linda Takagaki, John Minamo-

to, Don Kaneshige, Ruth Terada, and

Christine Kamita for helping setup the

tailgate and prepping the food. Thanks

to Jeff Hisaoka for taking photos.

Welcome Back to Dharma School A MESSAGE FROM DHARMA SCHOOL CO-SUPERINTENDENTS DELIA IKEDA AND MELYSSA MINAMOTO

Bazaar 2019

A NEW DHARMA SCHOOL YEAR and academic year is upon us and

summer has come to an end.   Our

emotions are excited for what is

to come this year and perhaps

somewhat sad for all that has ended

last year. Our minds and bodies are

preparing to get into the routine of

attending church on Sundays and

school on the weekdays. So goes

the  impermanence of life—one cycle

ends and another begins. Dharma

School is a great opportunity to slow

down each week, be present, and

become awakened to things as they

are and ourselves as we are. We do

this at the Dharma Family Service

at 10 a.m.  through meditation, su-

tra chanting, and Sensei’s Dharma

Message. Then we continue after

service in our classrooms with fun,

thoughtful, hands-on learning about

living a Jodo-Shinshu Buddhist life.

Our  first day of Dharma School is

September 8th.

Speaking of “ourselves as we

are,” Dharma School students wear

many hats (teammate, band mate,

volunteer, student of other schools,

human being who needs rest, etc.),

as do their parents. Throughout the

year, commitments place demands

on our time. We do the best we can.

Shinran taught us that there are dif-

ferent ways to practice awareness.

For us, that might look like attend-

ing church most Sundays, or it might

look like attending only Shotsuki me-

morial services. No matter how your

practice materializes, no matter how

often you make it to church, you are

always welcome at Dharma School.

This year, we’ll be hosting a period-

ic Kids’ Club on Saturday nights for

members and non-members alike to

socialize and share in the Dharma

with fun activities, games, music, din-

ner and movies. Stay tuned for more

information. If your children are pre-

school (age 3) to high school age and

you are interested in having them

attend Dharma School at any point

in the year, please complete the en-

closed registration form and mail it

to the church (c/o Dharma School),

or email a scanned copy/photo to

[email protected].

Let’s look forward to an

enjoyable Dharma School year of

meeting new people, learning

new lessons about things as they

are and ourselves as we are, and

experiencing Oneness in different

ways. And yet, let’s also look back

with gratitude for all that Maya

Lawrence, teachers, Sensei, and

current families  have done to keep

our Dharma School operating at a

high level and to shine a bright light

on the Dharma in our lives. A spe-

cial thank you for donations to the

Dharma School from  Maya

Lawrence  for her gift quilt,  Yasuhiko

and Margaret Aoki  for Veterans

Shikisho, and Jensen and Lianne

Tsujimoto-Wong  for  Ryan’s

college graduation. Thank you also to

our  Dharma School families  for their

help at Bazaar. n

BUDDHIST CHURCH OF OAKLAND 32nd ANNUAL BENEFIT GOLF TOURNAMENT

Dear Members and Friends: The Buddhist Church of Oakland is proud to sponsor its 32nd Annual Benefit Golf Tournament to be held at the Berkeley Country Club (formerly Mira Vista Golf & Country Club), 7901 Cutting Boulevard, El Cerrito, CA 94530. This year’s tourney is slated for a later date than last year’s event. It will be on September 30, 2019, Monday. We are, once again, offering corporate sponsorships to invite local community organizations, companies or individuals to further participate in the church’s programs including community outreach. Three levels of corporate sponsorship are available. Each level provides corporate representatives to participate as well as opportunities to identify your company or business in our program and at the golf course. Other opportunities include providing a donation that could be used as a raffle or door prize. We also ask you to consider supporting this fundraiser by being a hole-sponsor for the tournament. In recognition of your monetary donation of $100 or more for the hole-sponsor, a sign advertising your business or your personal sponsorship will be displayed at one of the 18 tee areas and will be acknowledged in the printed program. The proceeds of this tourney will go towards addressing the maintenance challenges that are in many cases long overdue at the church. A list of the types of sponsorships and donations are on the second page. In order for your donation to be properly acknowledged in the program, please complete and return the form on Page 2 to the Buddhist Church of Oakland by September 16, Monday. It is with deepest gratitude and appreciation to the many participants and donors over the years that we are able to continue having this annual event. Your consideration of supporting this event is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Sincerely,

Keiju Terada, Committee Chair Committee Members: Michael Endo, Mary Hiromoto, Eric Ikeda, Linda Minamoto, Edward Mon, Peter Nakaso, John Neishi, Ron Nomura, Jeff Suda, Ted Tanisawa, Gary Tominaga, Janet Tsukahira
