JAVA DEVELOPMENTMost software product organisations are finding it tough to land strong Java developers with Cloud, Angular 6+ and React skills or developers with experience building microservices architectures. As a result, more companies are hiring contractors to meet these needs.

With so much hiring driven by the adoption of new technologies and approaches to software engineering, flexibility and aptitude for learning is more important than ever for software engineers. From mid-level upwards, companies consider people who can produce solutions to problems in addition to being a capable programmer.

With continuous salary increases in most IT sectors, the Java space has followed in the same direction with a rise for mid – senior level candidates with niche, in demand skill sets. Many software product organisations are proposing remote working, flexible start times to retain top talent and have come to realise that most candidates pursue the opportunity to toil with new technologies and the scope to build new things (greenfield projects or new feature development).In a competitive market, hiring companies are finding it challenging to secure the right candidates and are now shortening or consolidating their interview process to ensure it runs swiftly, giving them the best opportunity of landing top candidates.

.NET DEVELOPMENT

Cutting edge tech, learning & progression opportunities along with remote working and flexible hours are promising to be more important as it is seen as an indicator to how flexible the working environment is. Candidates could be concerned that micro-management may be at play should these incentives not be available.The need for Full Stack developers with Angular or React paired with .NET Core seem to be the focal point for most hiring companies, in addition to this they are also seeking candidates who are self-starting, passionate and eager to learn from experienced team members.

As the market becomes more competitive with an increased demand for a higher calibre of candidate, we have seen a rise in salary.

Most hiring companies are offering flexibility, health, pension, TaxSaver and access to training to strong candidates in order to secure them from various counter offers.

Majority of the Software Product, FinTech and MedTech companies have been migrating their systems to the cloud with Azure and AWS. What we have observed is a strong emphasis on CI/CD processes and candidates having experience with tools like Jenkins, Docker and Kubernetes.

BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE & ANALYTICS

Over the past 6 months there has been a noticeable salary increase for “traditional” business intelligence hires (Oracle, MicroStrategy, Teradata, IBM Cognos for example). As there are fewer junior candidates moving into these types of roles, the pool of available candidates is static or declining at the moment. Data Engineer salaries have strengthened noticeably due to increasing demand.

Most financial service organisations and various Data Platform companies within this space are in search of Data Engineers with combining software engineering skills (Java, Python or Scala) along with database knowledge and Business Intelligence developers with cloud (AWS, Azure) skills.

Established FS companies within this sector incline to centre their attention on candidates who are problem solvers, who can take ownership of

delivering solutions, are passionate, enthusiastic and display an interest in technology and business. Job seekers within this realm seek hiring companies who offer the opportunity to solve interesting problems with rich data sets, learn new tools, operate with the best technology stack, whilst continuously developing skills in machine learning, AI and cloud technologies.

It has been a successful year so far within the Business Intelligence & Analytics space and major transformations have transpired with a significant number of companies moving to cloud based BI & Analytics – migrating from on premise solutions to AWS, MS Azure or Google Cloud, along with new BI platforms being used such as Looker and Alteryx.

FRONTEND DEVELOPMENT – JAVA SCRIPT

Candidates with experience in developing applications with cutting edge frameworks, mainly React.JS are in particularly high demand. There is also an amplified need for candidates with experience in newer versions of the Angular frameworks, as we are now on version 7, most companies using the newest version are looking for candidates working with at least version 4+. On the other hand, there is also a heightened need for candidates who are experienced with Node.JS for Frontend development, as well as candidates who are equipped to use it as a Backend technology.

Over the past 6 months, top candidates have been searching for opportunities from hiring companies offering more

flexibility in the work place. Remote working options and flexible hours are factors that are enticing more passive candidates willing to move.

Majority of FS organisations, US based start-up companies and Technology companies utilising Big Data, Machine Learning, and AI are looking for engineers that have captured ownership, or demonstrated initiative in key projects during their career. They are usually interested in candidates that obtain product focused/application development in the frontend space, rather than candidates that have been building websites with Frontend technologies.

Within the Frontend Development (Java Script) sector, there has been a considerable increase in the salaries of candidates at mid-level (3-5 years’ experience). There are less of these candidates active in the market and the salary increases to warrant a move are going up from €2,000 - €6,000 in the past, to more so around €10,000 in recent months.

BUSINESS ANALYSIS & PRODUCT OWNER

6 months down the line there has been an evident rise in salaries due to strong competition in the market. Finding a skilled mid-level BA is extremely difficult and hard to lock down within the current market.

Present compensation packages are typically made up of a combination of the following: Pension between 4-8% / Healthcare / bonus 5-10% / flexible working hours and food allowance being a major draw for candidates.

One of the main obstacles for Financial Service, Software and Pharmaceutical companies in the current market is not locating the strongest candidates and getting them over the line. With high levels of competition, we typically see

the most sought after candidates are involved in multiple interview process. These candidates are generally looking for a more competitive salary and the opportunity to operate within the latest industry trends. Agile is one of the biggest buzz words for BA’s with everyone wanting to gain exposure to best practices.

Candidates with strong client facing exposure, core BA Principles and agile environment experiences are top of the list when assessing candidates for BA roles.

The BA space is proving to be a very competitive sector in terms of organisations trying to attract top talent. With a significant increase in activity for BA recruitment, organisations are tapping into the passive candidate pool now more than ever to secure top talent for their organisation.

PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT & SENIOR IT

In connection with this, there has been an upward trend in permanent salaries, while typical rates that contractors can command have remained firmer. With regards to desired skills, PMs with software application, infrastructure and PM change are preferred and these professionals have the necessary skills that tech organisations require.

Most hiring organisations in this space seem to filter across your Healthcare Services and Tech companies with the demand for PM talent continuously growing across these areas. Top candidates in the current market seek the option around flexibility, great cultural environment and a strong work-life balance.

Some fascinating changes have ensued in 2019 within the Programme Management space, one of these is the elevation in more contract roles within the current market. Although, most hiring companies are seeking to employ talent on a permanent basis rather than taking on contractors to fill skills gaps.

SENIOR APPOINTMENTSSalaries for CTO and head of engineering level roles haven’t varied significantly and the last 6 months continues to be a lord spectrum of financial scale in salaries that are offered to executives’ period, this is largely dependent upon the scale of the organisation and the scale of the challenge that the role will encompass.

Most hiring companies within the sector are typically looking for candidates that have been on a similar journey to the one they are progressing on, have done things of real substance not just being a caretaker and have worked through difficult challenges and found acceptable outcomes.

We have identified that there is no dominant set of companies hiring for executive level positions in the Dublin market at present. On the

client side there is a high demand for Head of Engineering and leadership of software engineering groups as a whole.

From a candidate perspective, having a genuine voice and control, a company that is growing or in need of improvement where they can influence the success and be recognised for their achievements are aspects that candidates consider when selecting the ideal company.There have been a number of US based organisations that opened offices in Dublin offering roles such as EMEA CTO or Head of Engineering but some of these roles have proven to be toothless when it comes to real decision making which can be frustrating for a budding CTO who is keen to really put their mark on things. It’s important to double-check the commitment for growth and autonomy in Ireland.

In the last 6 months as there has been more movement at an executive level as companies look to push to the next stage of their evolution. There have also been a number of software companies that have either reduced in size or have moved the Irish operation overseas or just ceased trading.

QA AND SOFTWARE TESTINGThe QA and Software Testing space has seen a growing demand for strong automation candidates skilled in building frameworks with a solid working knowledge of OO programming, combined with strong traditional QA principles.

In the last 6 months, there has been a reduced demand for Manual Test Analysts due to an emerging pool of candidates with a combined skill set of QA fundamental’s and mid-level automation experience, taking on a dual role of manual and automation engineering, QA Engineers. Many employers are now opting for this calibre of a candidate as they start to introduce some basic automation into a manual environment, while still delivering end-to-end manual solutions.

With many organisations on the hunt for top tier candidates, salary growth has started to slow down as candidates in this space are now being afforded the opportunity to upskill in areas such as automation, with the trade off of a lesser salary increase for their move. This growing pool

of candidates provides employers with a wider variety of profiles to choose from, increasing candidate competition.

As QA candidates get more involved in the full SDLC, communication and leadership skills are now just as important as a candidate’s technical skillset, engaging with the business and different teams within an organisation. In automation, most companies are less focused on individual tools or tech experience and are more interested in their relevant experience for an individual project. This allows them to upskill in their new role and learn new technologies.

SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION & DEVOPSDublin’s Infrastructure market is persistently growing. The data confirms a strong demand for DevOps professionals as a growing number of organisations begin implementing the development model in their businesses. In terms of salaries, they have rapidly increased over the course of the year as positions open up in a market known to be candidate-shy.

Cloud experience (AWS, Azure or GCP) are the highly rated skillsets in demand. Everybody wants AWS, even though more companies are using Google Cloud. Without AWS experience, you really limit your chances. It’s a vital factor to acquire AWS knowledge and experience to be able to work in 80-85% of the DevOps environments out there. Over the past 6 months, companies are thinking about containerization, microservices, with Kubernetes relating to the level, and they realise the gains they can make by having it in their environment.Organisations with the likes of

SaaS and Financial Institutions are continuously looking for candidates who are able to contribute to the open source community in their own time and have a track record of continuous learning. IT SECURITY & NETWORKSAs the economy experiences further growth and international companies expand operations into Ireland there is and will be an increasing threat from cyber-criminal. Third party vendors are being asked to answer and provide evidence that their IT infrastructure is compliant with the relevant regulations in order to prevent from hackers gaining entry through third party vendors.

Salaries will increase as we operate in a skill short market. However, in order to attract top talent, organisations will have to remain competitive in the current market place offering competitive salaries and compensations. A high calibre candidate will be reluctant to join a company with high staff turnover and organisations who don’t promote from within.

The biggest fear for most hiring SME’s, financial and public sector organisations is cultural fit and attitude, an unpleasant attitude can bring a team’s productivity down with knock on effects throughout the business.

Skill set is evidently important, candidates must have a technical ability and a passion for the role when interviewing, however if a candidate demonstrates an ability to be coached and a willingness to learn this can lead to greater long-term success.

Strong IT Security Analysts, Risk & Compliance Consultants and Senior Network Engineers are in high demand within this space. IT Security & Network candidates typically want a number of things and this varies from candidate to candidate. Real considerations are location, salary, the opportunity to work with the latest technology, career progression and flexible hours is becoming increasingly favourable for most candidates.

IT SUPPORTIntroducing our IT Support section for the first time in our Archer Salary Survey. No significant changes have occurred in 2019 which has resulted in no noticeable alteration in salaries out of line with the broader Irish economy.

With a demand in niche skillsets, the rise in popularity of the Linux and Apple iOS has not shown any signs of significantly eroding the dominance Microsoft Windows holds in the desktop domain meaning that the technology stack most in demand remains aligned to Microsoft.

Many of the larger scale corporations already established in Dublin have stable IT support functions, the movement in the market has been through a combination of a small number of Brexit related moves by companies moving some of their UK functions to Ireland and small and medium sized businesses expanding their IT support capabilities.

Career related training & certifications and career development are the two most significant draws for candidates and through this they are able to develop into more experienced roles. From the other side, most hiring organisations seek candidates with a very strong customer focus and the ability to think beyond a break-fix situation and to consider preventative strategies.
