For the first time in almost three decades, the provincial rid-ing of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pem-broke has a minister in the pro-vincial cabinet. John Yakabuski kicked off his 15th year as the region’s MPP by being appointed as Minister of Transportation for Ontario. The last time the region had a member in cabinet was in 1990 when Sean Conway was the Minister of Education and Colleges and Universities. The demands on Yakabuski will be huge on this file as spe-cial interest groups are already wanting to get light rails, bicycle lanes and more onto his desk for consideration. The pre-determi-nations have already started, with one post on Twitter saying that because he’s from a northern rid-ing, probably all he cares about are roads. But knowing “Yak,” he’ll take that all in stride, given his 15-year marathon to get here. He’s not one of these elected officials who swooped in to a minister’s position - he worked for it. He became the Conserva-tive Party’s critic on just about

every portfolio, earning him the respect throughout Queen’s Park, and making sure his riding didn’t feel abandoned by the govern-ment in power, as so often is the case in the urban-rural divide.

A Father’s Footsteps In media, Yakabuski credits his father, Paul Yakabuski, for inspiring his drive in politics. He feels genuinely honoured when people tell him stories about his dad as he travels the riding. This year, however, the Yakabuski family torch has been passed. Despite serving 20 years with a party who led government at Queen’s Park, the elder Yakabus-

ki was never a cabinet minister. John claimed that honour in the first year his Conservatives formed government, after 14 years of opposition. The Yakabuski political story makes a good read. It begins in 1951 when Paul Yakabuski is elected to Barry’s Bay municipal council - by a single vote! Imag-ine if he had lost by a single vote that day? The Yakabuski legacy might never have taken root. Paul served as the reeve of the municipality until 1961, and then he decided to run for provincial politics. He entered as a candi-date for the riding of Renfrew

South, and in 1963 he defeated Liberal Leonard Quilty by 889 votes. He would hold his seat for 24 years. In 1987, he chose not to seek re-election. He died on the day of his retirement.

Second Cousins Just down the road in the rid-ing of Renfrew North, a cousin of Paul Yakabuski had entered politics, but as a Liberal candi-date. Sean Conway started his political career in 1975, earning a seat away from the Conserva-tives who had held it for nearly 20 years. Conway would go on to have a 28-year career in politics, which would include cabinet positions as Minister of Education in 1985, Minister of Government Services in 1986 and Minister of Mines the fol-lowing year. In 1989 Conway was returned to the Education portfolio and also the Minister of Colleges and Universities, followed by Minister of Skills Development. If you’re feeling stressed out, overtaxed, under-appreciated, bullied or abused because you work with a jerk, learn how to avoid, outwit, and disarm assholes today. Equally useful and entertaining, The Asshole Survival Guide delivers a cogent and methodical game plan when you find yourself working with a jerk-whether in the office, on the field, in the classroom, or just in life. Sutton starts with diagnosis: what kind of asshole problem are you dealing with? From there, he provides field-tested, evidence-based and sometimes surprising strategies for dealing with the rude, impolite, irritating, un-pleasant or incompetent people avoiding them and developing protective psychological armor. Ultimately, this survival guide is about developing an outlook and personal plan that will help you preserve the sanity in your life, and will prevent all those perfectly good days from being ruined by some jerk.

About The Author Robert Sutton is a Stanford University professor and author of six management books, including the New York Times bestsellers The No Asshole Rule and Good Boss, Bad Boss. He is an IDEO Fellow and cofounder of the Stanford Technology Ven-tures Program and the Stanford Design Institute.

This included the riding of Yaka-buski’s Renfrew South as well as Renfrew North. Conway ran one term in the new riding - making him the longest-serving MPP at the time - before making the decision to retire. His successor would be his second cousin, John Yakabuski.

John’s Career John Yakabuski’s first elec-tion was a tough one. He was up against 28 years of Liberal repre-sentation, and his opponent was Derek Nighbor who has worked with Conway and who, Yakabus-ki admitted, had more political experience than he did. But there was a mood for change in the riding, and Yakabuski earned his seat by a margin of 645 votes. Of greater significance that year was that Yakabuski’s was the only Liberal seat to be won by the Conservatives in the entire province that year as the Liberals were elected to a strong majority government. That would be the start of Yakabuski’s 14 years in opposi-tion at Queen’s Park. He would go on to be re-elected four times in the riding, earning between 62.35 and 70.78 per cent of the vote. In the 2018 election, he was elected with the greatest percentage of the vote of

any winning candidate in all of Ontario (69.19 per cent), and it wasn’t even his best showing! It might look like it has been an easy road with such gener-ous elected margins, but it has been anything but. At the Deep River All Candidates Night in 2018, Yakabuski talked about having lost two family members to mental health issues. He also lost a brother to AIDS. An hour before the polls closed on the night of the 2014 election, his brother-in-laws passed away. An hour later, Yakabuski was in front of cheering supporters and with more than 70 per cent of the vote, his heart breaking. And in 2018, when the Con-servative party was supposed to have the easiest road to victory ever, Yakabuski had to deal with the Patrick Brown situation, a hastily-organized leadership race and the public reaction to electing Doug Ford. And, he did all that by bringing Doug Ford to his riding on the first day of the provincial election cam-paign. Yakabuski has a vision of leading government. He was confident and he made voters confident, and it showed in the election results. Yakabuski’s win in a story of perseverance. He never gave up. He never became silent. No matter what side of the politi-

cal spectrum you are on, he is approachable. He truly is a candidate for all the people, and Ontario is better for it.

Centre Urges Proper Disposal Options

Small electronics causing fires The Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre is seeing a spike in inappropriate disposal of electronics, and it is causing fires in the landfill. Small electronics; particularly those containing lithium-ion batteries, and causing fires and can emit dangerous fumes from the combustion of a wide range of materials contained within the landfill. Landfill fires can also be difficult to put out if not detected immediately as they can spread under the surface and burn for extended periods of time. In 2017, there were three landfill fires associated with electronic devices and hazardous waste being improperly disposed

of in garbage. In 2018, there have already been five fires. In the most recent fire, an electronic tablet was recovered and found to have caused the fire. Electronic devices such as tablets, cellphones and laptops contain rechargeable, lithium-ion batteries. When these batteries are punctured by the Centre’s landfill compacting equipment, the liquid contents of the battery react with water in the air gen-erating high heat and sometimes producing a fire. Proper disposal of waste electronics is easy, convenient and drop-off is free at the Centre. For a complete list of acceptable items visit www.ovwrc.com.

Calls for Cross-Border Ambulance Changes

Lanark County council sup-ported a motion by the United Counties of Prescott Russell regarding municipalities that fail to pay for cross-border ambu-lance calls. The motion calls for the City of Ottawa to enter into good-faith negotiations on cross-border ambulance compensation with neighbouring paramedic services, and for the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to amend the Ambulance Act to require a cross-border ambulance compensation agreement. The motion is being circulated to Ot-tawa, neighbouring municipali-ties and the Ontario government. The move comes as municipali-

ties adjacent to Ottawa are facing increased provincial dispatch calls for ambulances to service needs in Ottawa, which increases strain on services to meet their own local response times and also has financial consequences.

Event Cancelled For 2018Comberemere’s CO Blitz will not be taking place in 2018. In a report to council, CAO Suzanne Klatt noted that several factors were involved in the decision, including: costs of security and entertainment, upgrades required for the outdoor rink and a chal-lenge in recruiting volunteers.

Also, as the event is a committee of council, they were not able to continue with their raffle. A partnership with an association would be required to sponsor the raffle. The loss of revenue associated with the popular community event was noted as a financial implication.

By: Jennifer [email protected] In preparing for this column, I took a stroll through the books on my shelf and came across some inspiration from Who Stole My Sale? 23 Ways To Close The Deal by Todd Duncan. It’s a small book of 1-2 page short an-ecdotes geared to sales success. As I flipped through, a quote caught my attention. “It doesn’t matter how many prospects you see. It matters how you see the right prospects. To maximize your prospecting efficiency you must replace the traditional “more is better” quan-tity concept with a “less is best” quality concept.” The quote referenced the movie Jerry Maguire, the Tom Cruise film about a sports agent who decides having fewer clients but paying more attention to them is better than carrying 72 clients that you can’t spend any time with at all. He drafts a “manifesto” of sorts to this effect and his subsequently fired. He then goes on to have one single

client and builds a relationship with him. The other agents all laugh at Cruise until the end when one player, envious of a player-agent bond Cruise has says to his agent, “Why don’t we have a relationship like that?”

Relationship Ready If you’re not a Walmart, rela-tionships should be the focus in building your business. You can still seek out new clients, but you want to seek out the client who is looking for a relationship. With-out securing a connection, you’re just a hamster wheel - always having to find new clients. Yes, it takes longer to develop a relationship with people, but the value is there. Just look at your own book of clients. Who are your relationship clients? How have they increased their business with you? How many people were referred to you by them? Your relationship clients will grow your business. Chasing new business is time consuming and exhausting because your starting point is ap-proaching someone who hasn’t sought you out and probably has no interest in what you have to offer in the first place (or else they would have sought you out.) The work is in convincing them that of all the other options they have for the product or service, they should choose you.

With a relationship client, you have already done that part. With a prospect referred to you from a relationship client, you don’t have to spend time on that part because the relationship client has already convinced them you are worth a call. The hardest part of the sales process is unneces-sary when you focus on relation-ship-building. When I meet with clients for marketing consulting for the first time, I offer one-hour of free consultation. I do that for two reasons. First, it’s an easy entry point for someone who might be new to marketing. Second, it gives me an opportunity to see if we can build a relationship. I believe that the person you invite into your business to help with marketing is someone you need to trust to give you good advice and guide you in the right direc-tion. Basically, I’m asking for trust. That’s a big ask - but there is no relationship without it. As you’re sitting by the camp-fire and relaxing this summer, put some thinking to your best clients and how you have ben-efited from that relationship. You might be surprised how the dots connect.
