So what was needed was the requirement of a ‘Fast Track membership lane’ to be incorporated together with a separate entry and exit points to guarantee regular members could gain access to the Sports Centre without delay. We frequently deal with this kind of brief, but what makes this installation even more special, and a great example of what ITABmk can do, is that a full height screen to segregate ‘reception and cafe area’ was also required to be incorporated into the design (see photo).

Following our site survey, the installation was turned round in a matter of days on time and to budget, with great success, which was acknowledged by Andrew Miller, Manager of the Harvey Hadden Sports Centre. Our customer relationship with the City of Nottingham Council goes from strength-to-strength as we are currently working on future projects with them.

This turnstile offers the benefit of being more affordable that the prestigious Premier model due to its simpler lines and construction yet still projects the image of an elegant, robust and uncompromising unit.This turnstile can also be fitted with a stylish drop arm as it offers completely free and unhindered exit in an emergency situation, as the battery power pack (which can be either built into the turnstile unit or situated remotely) unlocks the arm from the horizontal position and drops the arm down to a vertical position. The Rotogate offers a cost effective and versatile solution to controlling entrance/exit to any location. This simple, versatile design of the Rotogate presents a secure and stylish solution that compliments many locations, particularly those which experience high levels of pedestrian traffic. Our Rotogate is packed with many features that make access control more integrated and less obtrusive. 25. Control Mechanisms


ITAB MK automatic gates can be interfaced with a variety of control systems, from a simple manually operated push button to more sophisticated fully automatic ultrasonic or autosensor devices. Connection to a customer’s own bespoke control system, for example a fire alarm or computer system, is also possible. Standard control mechanisms are described as below:

Photocell EyesPhotocell eyes are a reliable and effective form of gate control. The eyes act as a presence sensor, sending out a beam of invisible infrared light directed at a reflective strip placed opposite the photocell eye.

1. First Front EyeThe first front eye is positioned 100mm above the finished floor level in the upright post supporting the lead-in rails at a recommended minimum of 1.2 metres from the gate body. When a person or object breaks the invisible beam of light, the gate will open and close again after a pre-set time delay. Should a person or object remain in the path of the light beam, the gate will remain open.

2. Second Front EyeSupplementing and operating in the same manner as the first front eye, the second front eye is typically positioned on a cross rail close to the gate body. If the gate begins to close before the customer has passed it, activation of the second front eye will re-open it.

3. Six Eye Rear Safety ZoneThe six eye rear safety zone is highly recommended and offers increased safety for pedestrians in the path of the gate arm. If any one of the six eye beams is broken, the gate arm stops moving. Detection of a presence in the rear safety zone will override any other signals. The gate will not function until the safety zone area is cleared of any presence and a pre-set time delay has elapsed.

4. Reverse Action EyeThe reverse action eye is exclusively for use with reverse action gate configurations, and is incorporated into the lead out barrier rail. Reverse action gate configurations allow unrestricted flow in one direction whilst inhibiting flow in the opposite direction. Upon detection of an exit attempt in the restricted direction, the gate arm closes and remains closed until the reverse action eye detects return movement in the permitted direction, or the pre-set time delay elapses.

A minimum of 3 metres is required between the reverse action eye and the gate body so that a person attempting to run out of the store may still be stopped.

5. Push ButtonA push button is the simplest means of controlling a gate. It can be used in any application where direct control or monitoring of persons through the gate is required.

6. AutosensorsAutosensors are generally used in applications where space is limited or a more open environment is desired. One internally mounted sensor is required per gate. Autosensors are only able to detect movement and so cannot be used as a presence detector i.e. in place of a safety detector. Each sensor is factory-set, but due to the variable nature of each installation, it may be necessary to alter the detection range on site. Care should be taken when positioning an autosensor, as cross pedestrian traffic flow may lead to false opening of the gate.

7. Ultrasonic SensorsUltrasonic sensors are presence detectors which can be used where it is not desirable to use lead-out rails with a six pack rear safety. One internally mounted sensor is required per gate. As the detection zone is not visible, consideration must be given to ensure that it is kept free of obstructions because this will prevent the gate from opening.

26. Control Mechanisms - Overhead Sensor


This control system offers the security benefit of unobtrusive automated entrance gates which are operated based on motion and presence in order to open/close the gates as required.The overhead sensor can be installed in a variety ofapplications from recessed into the ceiling to supported by unistrut (see photo for illustration), in order to complement the site environment. Thus removing need for any barriers whilst giving finite control.The overhead sensor detection pattern is made up of 4 rows, each of which has 6 detection spots. This provides a very dense detection area of 24 detection spots. The sensor is microprocessor controlled, providing programmable Presence Timer (2, 15, 60 secs).It has a pattern depth and width which are adjustable using mounting heights, dip switches, pattern angle adjustments, it also continuously monitors itself with its self-diagnostic function, and has 4 frequency settings to avoid cross interference between sensors in close proximity.

28. Mechanical Gate - Controlled Entry


This gate is designed to be open through 90 degrees and return to the closed position under spring tension. The entry or exit of people is controlled remotely by a member of staff, by means of an electrical impulse which disengages the solenoid lock. When the control is activated a green light (in top cap) indicates that the gate can be opened. The gate will close under spring pressure and lock until a further signal is received. When used as an entry gate a mechanical emergency exit facility is fitted as standard (breakout for emergency exit facility is in the opposite direction to gate opening)

29. Mechanical Gate - Emergency Exit


The Emergency Exit gate is ideal use for internal areas where barriers would prevent access to emergency exit doors. The gate arm will open in the exit direction through 90 degrees only under the pre-set pressure and will remain open until reset. Gate arms can be supplied with or without support leg. The base of the leg is fitted with a nylon wheel for smooth operation when opening. Standard finish is bright chrome plate with infill panel. A range of No Entry and Emergency Exit signs are available.

31. Mechanical Gate - Lift Up Lock Gate & Lift Up Key Lock


This gate is designed to be open through 90 degrees and return to the closed position under spring tension. A standard feature of these gates is where access is to be limited or used occasionally the standard mechanical gate can be supplied with Lift Up Key or Lift Up Lock facility.

Lift up Lock Gates-This small lock, which is fitted to the barrel of the gate, requires the lift-up action of the lock before access can be gained. The fitting of the lock does not affect the Emergency Exit breakout facility.

32. Mechanical Gate - Alarmed Controlled Emergency Exit


This mechanical gate is designed to be used in areas to positively indicate the emergency exit flow and particularly suited where maximum security is not required and an alarm needs to sound. The gate is designed to be open through 90 degrees and return to the closed position under spring tension manually controlled via a push button. This particular type of gate is to be used as an Emergency Exit gate where an emergency passageway is required in the same direction as as the entry gates, typical use is at closed checkout aisle where customers who may have no purchase can exit or at a customer service desk. In an emergency, the gate can be pushed in its normal mode of operation and under pressure will break open sounding the alarm and activating the top light which will flash. The exit of people is controlled either remotely by a member of staff, by means of an electrical impulse which disengages the solenoid lock or can be pushed to sound the alarm. A checkout closer is the ideal solution, simple and cost effective, for providing a barrier across the aisle to prevent unauthorised access/exit through the checkouts. To open the checkout closer if it is closed - lift up the lock block and push closer arm into store and ensure arm is fully open at 90°to engage lock position. To close the aisle - lift up lock block and return arm to fully closed position across the aisle to engage the closed lock position. To use the closer as an emergency exit, push the closer arm hard towards the store exit direction to the fully open exit position. To return the closer to the fully closed position the lock blockmust be lifted and the arm moved to the fully closed position across the aisle.

This checkout closer is simply installed onto the side of the required checkout unit. The checkout closer is designed to be open through 90 degrees in either direction to suit any requirement and is operated manually. A standard feature of these gates is the ability to be opened by firm body pressure to give an emergency exit facility. A simple adjustment negates this facility when used as a exit. This type of checkout closer has the optional added feature of being alarmed which is reset manually ensuring a member of staff has registered the disturbance.

It can also form a screen or barrier to keep things in or out. However it is not for use as balcony or stairway balustrade or stadium crash barrier ITABmk produces a complete modular range of standard uprights, cross-rails and connecting cups in such a variety of finishes and colours that Barrier Rail is suitable for almost any situation.
