DESCRIPTION

I took 3 months to plan for this Italy holiday trip with my wife way back in 2007. In my overzealousness, I over-planned with simply too many options to complete in our 10 wonderful days in this beautiful country. Our final actual itinerary was Milan-Lake Como - Venice - Florence - Sienna-La Spezia (Cinque Terra) - Milan. Do take a look and share your comments and experiences with me. I certainly look forward to travel to Italy (there are so much more to see!)

Tuscany Exploration DAY 1Montalcino is a walled hilltop town in Tuscany lying in a very good position at 564 meters above sea level. It enjoys splendid views of the surrounding valleys. The landscape is characterized by stark rolling hills, marked by winding roads lined with dark cypresses and fortified towns, but among the most important features, are the numerous acres of vineyards from which some of Tuscany's most esteemed red wines are produced, Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino.

The climate and nature of the soil also favors the cultivation of olive groves, producing an excellent olive oil with a refined taste. Mushrooms, truffles, pecorino cheese, salami and honey crown the gastronomic offer of Montalcino.

pilgrims who went to Rome from northern Europe. It is called the Town of the Towers because in the past it had up to 72 Tower-houses and 14 still survive. San Gimignano contains many remains and several works of 14th and 15th century Italian art, especially from the Sienese and Florentine schools. Piazza del Duomo is the heart of the town and it hosts the Palazzo del Podestà, the Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) and the Duomo. Throughout the centuries, Piazza del Duomo represented the focal point of San Gimignano where all celebrations took place and where the municipal power was seated. Two towers rise up in the square: Torre Grossa and Torre Rognosa. Nowadays, it continues to preserve its ancient role and is still one of the focal points of the town.

o Duomo, Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta: Three nave aisle church dating back to the 12th century.

The rich interior with frescoed walls by famous painters contribute to

make this church a unique testimony of its ancient past. Works of art by Bartolo di Fredi, Taddeo di

Bartolo, Ghirlandaio and wooden sculptures by Jacopo della Quercia.

o Town Hall: It overlooks Piazza del Duomo with its 52 mt high tower,

called "Torre Grossa", the highest tower in the town, from which it is

24

possible to have a wonderful view. It hosts the civic museum with

many works of art. Worthy of note are the "Annunciazione" by Filippo

Lippi, (1482), the "Crucifix" by Marcovaldo (1260), the tabernacle of Santa Fina, the patron saint of San Gimignano and "Madonna in Gloria", painted by Pinturicchio in 1512. Of particular interest is the "Sala di Dante" where visitors can

admire the "Maestà" by Lippo Memmi, painted in 1317 along with

several other frescoes.

esplanade, making it a pleasant place for a stroll or a sit-down. There are also luxuriant parks, owing their existence to the turn-of-the-century lavishness that is also commemorated in the town's architecture and public buildings. Via del Prione is one of La Spezia's busiest streets, a largely-pedestrianised thoroughfare lined with shops, where the young bucks promenade on a Saturday afternoon.

La Spezia tourist Information Office is located opposite the esplanade at Viale Mazzini, 45. There is also a Tourist Information kiosk just outside the railway station.

Good daytrips from La Spezia include the Cinque Terre (thanks to the train service it's easy to walk and dine in the villages and then return to La Spezia to sleep), Portovenere and the other Golfo dei Poeti resorts, Lerici and San Terenzo, home of the Shelleys, which are pretty towns worth a visit for their

you will need to buy a ticket. The Cinque Terre Card is valid for 1, 3 or 7 days, and entitles you to walk on the paths and use local transport (trains and buses) at no extra cost. Costs begin at €5.40 for one day, and the card is valid on the railway from Levanto to La Spezia, so it's very useful if you are using one of these towns as a base.

The information offices will also provide you with leaflets about the National Park, a map of footpaths (rather basic) and a train timetable (invaluable).

LA SPEZIA INFORMATION

The Cinque Terre are (north to south): Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Below is our brief run-down on each one.

Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso has a certain amount of history as a seaside resort, and its name may be the most familiar. It has the most beach of all the Cinque Terre, but probably the least charm. More accessible by car than the others, the

Spezia-S.Stefano Magra. Follow the indications to La SpeziaCentro. At the end of V.le Carducci street, turn left to Cinque Terre and once in the middle of the city follow the indicationsto Castello di San Giorgio.

Boat servicesTourist boat services run to the towns around the Golfo dei Poeti, such as Lerici and Porto Venere. Frequency depends upon the season.

own sake as well as for their literary connections. In the castle at San Terenzo there is a small museum dedicated to Mary Shelley. Further up the Ligurian coast (about an hour and a half by train) you'll come to Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino.

result is expanses of tarmac by the seafront. There are several beach stabilimenti, where you can pay for a sunbed, and several strips of spiagga libera, where the beach is free to all.

Vernazza

Vernazza is an extremely charming small fishing port, with rooftops piled higgledy-piggledy around the little harbour and up the slopes towards a fortified tower, the Castello Doria. The small piazza by the harbour is lined with good restaurants and bars, and busy with ageing residents as well as tourists; the atmosphere is laidback and jovial, especially as the sun sets behind a distant headland and the painted buildings glow warmly in response.

Corniglia

Corniglia is the only one of the Cinque Terre to be perched up above sea level - a steep climb if you arrive on foot. Like a pine cone, the Corniglia mound is covered in clinging roofs and painted

33

Page 34: Italy holiday self planned itinerary (2007)

houses. The narrow alleys are buzzing with children playing and walkers stocking up at the little alimentari, general stores. A panoramic terrace affords great views from the top of the headland, where the houses give way to giddyingly steep cultivated terraces above the sea.

Manarola

Manarola is pleasant and peaceful, with more of an air of modernity than its nearest neighbours. There's a rocky cove which is popular with swimmers, and bars and restaurants overlooking the sea. There's also a tiny but pretty park at the beginning of the footpath to Corniglia, where you can sit and relax.

34

Page 35: Italy holiday self planned itinerary (2007)

Riomaggiore

From Riomaggiore a pedestrian tunnel runs alongside the railway towards the harbour and heart of town. The town is pretty, with tall houses marching up the hill away from the sea; all painted pastels and green shutters. There are plenty of eateries of all kinds.

La Spezia Restaurants in Cinque Terre Area: Eating Out

Local fresh fish is generally small in size and is served either fried, charcoal grilled, with potatoes or as a ciuppin soup. Ligurian anchovies are a highly prized dish, especially those coming from the Cinque Terre and Monterosso areas. They are easily recognized by their small size, hardly ever exceeding ten centimeters in length, and their color, the head and belly a silvery light gray with a dark blue-black back. These anchovies may be served in a variety of ways: raw with an olive oil and lemon dressing; with garlic and parsley; pan-cooked with potatoes; fried or better still, pickled. The bianchetti, anchovy and sardine fry fished in January and February, are a rare morsel indeed. They may be served either raw or dunked in boiling

water and then dressed with just a few drops of olive oil and lemon or, as is more customary, mixed with flour and egg and fashioned into small fritters.

Last but by no means least, the wines: wine production on Liguria's typical terraced hill sides has a well established and long standing tradition. Sciacchetrà, a very particular sweet wine produced in the Cinque Terre district, is one of the best known Italian wines.
