It’s A Jungle Behind My HouseBy Debbie O’Brien

We’ve had quite a bit of late winter rains and now the hills are abundant with flowers, the trees are blooming and raining down yellow blossoms everywhere. And of course, the weeds alongside your house are getting knee high. What to do?

Coy Landscaping will spray the weeds, trim those dead or overhanging branches, and pick up tree and shrub debris in the Common Areas behind and beside your house.

If you would like to have areas addressed, come on down to the Activity Office and fill out a Common Area Landscaping Work Order Request. The forms are in our self-serve area in the lobby, on the counter below the TV. Then just leave it with the front desk. (Ask Shannon if you need help finding the form.) If you fill in a detailed explanation of what area needs work, then I can communicate it better to the Landscaping Company. Your Common Area Landscaping Request is entered into the MBV Work Order system, it’s sent over to the Landscaping Company. I need you to fill out the form in order to start the process, no phone messages please.

Community Corner

Thank you for your confidence in your new Board! This year will be a busy one as we focus on TRANSPARENCY, COMMUNICATIONS and RESIDENT INPUT to enhance our buildings and grounds and overall value of these assets of MountainBrook Village!

I am very pleased to be working with Peter Cavoto (Board Vice President and Chair of the Architecture Committee); Wayne Walworth (Board Secretary); Ed Butler (Board Treasurer); and Pam Ingram (Director and Liaison for the Communications and Activities Committees) throughout the coming year.

We have a very experienced and talented pool of Committee Chairs (Chris Bukovac, Keith Charpentier, Larry England, Tami Tack and Claudia Vaughn) and Committee members. These individuals provide much of the analysis and recommendations to your Board throughout the year.

Your Board is committed to continually find ways to get your input and comments as we continue on the journey to make MountainBrook as attractive and desirable a home for all of us. We realize there is an upsurge in remodels, resales and a new generation of “Mountaineers” bringing a wealth of experience and camaraderie to our community! Keeping abreast of the retirement trends and ensuring we have a balanced

set of activities, amenities and services to meet both your needs and the next wave of Homeowners is an interesting balancing act.

We recently held 3 meetings to get your input into the Sunset and Activity Center buildings. Fine tuning the designs to make sure these remodels meet todays and upcoming needs is well underway. The final needs analysis will be completed mid-month and then we will enter the detailed design phase. Integrating your valuable input and using it with MBV resident Architects and Engineers has already resulted in significant improvements to the original plan. I will report progress on this key initiative over the coming months.

Our new Community General Manager, Suzanne Murray, has quickly provided the leadership for streamlining day-to-day Operations. As we close out another very successful year of events and many “firsts”, Jennifer McGraw (Lifestyle Director), Jan Pitts (Dances), Randy Ratcliff, Mike Worthy and Barbara Hofmeister (Follies) have raised the bar for a stellar season of enjoyment! Thanks to you and your teams!

Your Board looks forward to serving you and harnessing all your ideas to make MountainBrook an even better place to live and visit.

Please feel free to give a call or send an e-mail to any of us on your Board with your comments and suggestions!

March 28, 2017 HOA Board Meeting Highlights

The Board meeting was called to order by HOA President Jerry Stevenson. All five members of the HOA Board were present: Peter Cavoto, Vice President, Ed Butler Treasurer and Secretary, Jerry Stevenson President, Pam Ingram Director; and Wayne Walworth, Director.

The consent agenda was reviewed and approved. Ed Butler reviewed our February Financials and emphasized our

strong financial position (Operating Cash $783,701; Reserve Cash $1,106,335 and an additional $60,449 in Restricted Cash Reserves compared to 2016. There were 12 homes sold last month compared to 7 in 2016.

Suzanne Murray gave the Community Manager’s report. The Board approved the following motions:The Five Year Planning Committee will be changed to the Planning

Committee as recommended by the Board. The Chairman will be Keith Charpentier along with Tom Roberson, BJ Jensen, Pat Hardy, and Mary Peters.

Wayne Walworth agreed to take over the Board Secretary position from Ed Butler who had been Secretary / Treasurer.

Jerry Stevenson gave an update on the Sunset Center and Activity Center Projects. These projects are moving forward with community input on their requirements.

After much analysis and input from the MountainBrook pool users, it was approved to return the two pools from chlorine to salt chlorine like it was most of last year.

The Architectural Committee proposed a change to Section 3.2.7.1 for General Requirement/Fences/Walls which was approved. It

applied to the height of fences around home owners pools. The Five Year Planning Committee presented the MBV Reserve

Study which was received and accepted by the board. The study indicates MountainBrook Village is in a strong reserve position.Submitted by Wayne Walworth, HOA Secretary

Question: We have heard the Marquee sign by the Ocotillo is going to be replaced? When is that scheduled?

Response: This replacement sign was researched in 2015 and 2016 and reviewed at Coffee and News last year. After Board approval we have now received the go ahead permit from Pinal County. We expect installation will be completed in May. The sign has an electronic display and daily updates will be controlled remotely by FirstService. This display will be very visible and flexible and provide updates on upcoming MountainBrook events.

Question: Why don’t we have more dog-litter receptacles around the Community?

Response: Thank you for your question. FirstService Residential will review the existing ones and work with Coy to give the Board a recommendation on new installations.

Question: The new Fine Arts room is too small for even a small group. What can be done to give us Artists more space?

Response: Thank you for your feedback. We are looking to move the larger groups to other rooms. We are also considering removing some of the tables to provide more space in that room.

CANYON COOKOUT: Season finale, Four Stars!

It seems like it was only yesterday when Canyon Cookout fired up the grills for the 2017 season. As last year, the cookout has again been a huge success. Plenty of return customers and an abundance of new faces as well; many weeks the number of guests served was record breaking.

The final Canyon Cookout for 2017 was held on Wednesday March 29. Sorry to have it end for the season, but all good things must come to an end, which leads me to the reason for the article: a HUGE THANK YOU to Jack Twa and Gene Prescott. Through their commitment and hard work the Canyon Cookout has been a tremendous success for the past two seasons. You saw them on Wednesday but their work involved the shopping and stocking days in advance as well. The agreement with the office to allow Jack to shop and maintain the inventory was indeed a big factor in the success of the cookout. This was something the cookout committee requested for years. Right hand man Gene (actually, he was usually on Jack’s left at the cookout) was tireless and he also deserves a thank you since he accomplished this in his spare time while serving as the board president. That was no easy endeavor.

There were many other volunteers through the season; each week you might have noticed either a new face or a familiar face behind the counter. Don’t forget the gals ducking in and out to refill the table; plenty of ‘behind the scenes’ work goes on during the cookout. The ladies and gents who volunteered all deserve a thank you for the donation of their time and energy. We can’t forget to thank Loretta Milton; two words: Bread Pudding. Thank you Loretta.

Jack and Gene are not only hanging up their spatulas for this season, they have decided to permanently turn the task over to new faces. Gary and Jamie Dueling from Michigan have stepped forward to run the Canyon Cookout. Gary and Jamie are back in Michigan until October. They worked with Jack and team at the cookout plus went shopping prior to their departure. They’ve been very involved with food prep in times past and she’s licensed to work in a church kitchen. More about them when they return.

And don’t forget; it’s a lot of fun to work this event but we need volunteers. Think about next season and please prepare to help Gary and Jamie continue to have a successful Canyon Cookout.

Again, thanks to Jack Twa and his entire Canyon Cookout team. Looking forward to the 2018 Season starting next January.

The Dance Season is Over Our dance season concluded with a Mad Hatter Themed event featuring live music by our

own Chuck Pitts! This was a FREE event for residents, as our thank you for your ongoing support for our monthly dances. We were pleased to see so many new faces on the dance floor, as well as those who just wanted to come and listen to the great bands and music. Plans for next year are well underway and we look forward to providing monthly updates in the Mountaineer over the summer. As in the band Player's 1978 song title, we anticipate that you will plan to "Join in the Dance", next year.

THEATREBill Wash

The actors took their final bows as the curtain closed and lights dimmed on the last performance of The Odd Couple (Female Version). Roger Renstrom (aka Manolo) called Director Mary Stoalabarger to the stage. As Mary was surrounded by the cast of eight actors, Roger thanked her for her directorial efforts over the last two months and assured her that she made it a fun experience for all. He then informed the audience that Mary is retiring from directing after having directed The Second Time Around in 2010, Ghost Of A Chance in 2011, The Dinner Party in 2012, Lovers Leap in 2014 and The Odd Couple (Female Version) in 2017. Her reason for retiring is a serious back surgery procedure scheduled shortly after the closing of the play. Mary spoke to the audience, sharing that as a director she is stepping down on an emotional high by the success of The Odd Couple (FV). Although she will no longer direct plays, she is looking forward to rejoining the Theatre by appearing on stage as an actress. We all wish Mary the best. Please see the accompanying photo of Mary surrounded by her The Odd Couple (FV) cast.

When one curtain closes, another opens. Randy Ratcliff will direct You Can’t Take It With You, a comedy by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman scheduled for February 22-24, 2018. Auditions were held March 8 & 9. “The longest day in an actor’s life is waiting for a phone call the day after auditions”. Following are the names of actors awarded a role and the character they will play, listed in the

order they are named in the script: Shirley Renstrom as Penny; Chris Rinker as Essie; Linda Belland as Rheba; Roger Renstrom as Paul; Jerry Olm as De Pinna; David Huffman as Ed; Mike Melichar as Donald; Jim Mosier as Grandpa; Sue Mashek as Alice; Bob Carnahan as Henderson; John Soper as Tony; Dick Brennan as Kohlenkov; Karen Carnahan as Gay; Bill Wash as Mr. Kirby; Mary Stoalabarger as Mrs. Kirby; Bud Wolf and Michele Maanum as G.I. men; and Barb Wolf as The Grand Duchess Olga Katrina. Yes, this will be the largest cast to appear on the MBV stage in a play, nine of whom will be making their acting debut. Although Randy has directed many plays in the past, this will be his first at MBV. Randy selected this play because “It’s funny, has been on Broadway many times, been made into a movie and has stood the test of time”.

Next month, we will announce the results of the voting to replace members of the Theatre Board whose terms have expired.

The Bright AngelGary Hyde

The park brochure says that the canyon is 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, with an average depth of one mile. There are 15 major trails which provide access to the canyon and we chose to take the 7.1 mile long Kaibab Trail, which would lead us down the 4,500 foot elevation drop to the Phantom Ranch where we would stay the night. The brochure says “A unique resort providing all facilities for a comfortable stay at the bottom of the Grand Canyon”. Our plan was to stay overnight at the Phantom Ranch and then hike out of the canyon the next day using the 9.5-mile-long Bright Angel Trail.

We left the Phantom Ranch at 6:04 A.M. this morning, and have finally reached the half-way point at Indian Garden campgrounds. We were now ready for a twenty minute break, taking time to rest and eat our lunch. The 20 minutes goes all too fast and it’s once again time to hit the trail. This morning’s trek from Phantom Ranch to Indian Garden has taken us 3 ½ hours to travel 5 miles, with an elevation gain of 1476 feet. We now have 4 ½ miles remaining with an elevation gain of 2948 feet before we reach the top of the South Rim, our final destination. The trail has a slight incline for ¾ miles until we reach the side of the canyon and then it’s up, up, up, in a series of switchbacks that take us to the top.

By this time my knees are aching from yesterday’s descent into the canyon, and my legs are aching from today’s climb out. I have blisters on both feet and my every muscle is stressed from this climb. You know you’re tired when you can see you’re about to step in a pile of mule poop and don’t even try to avoid it.

We have been passed by three mule teams already this morning; some are carrying supplies down or back from the Phantom Ranch, while others are burdened down with tourists who have come to see the beauty of the canyon, but opt to go by mule rather than by foot. We are also beginning to encounter more hikers on the trail. Some stayed the night down at the Phantom Ranch and are now beginning to overtake us, while others had come down from the top of the South Rim just this morning. We had covered about two of the switchbacks when we met up with a group of three young men resting alongside the trail. I briefly talked with them and learned that they had come down the day before, stayed the night at Indian Gardens, and were now on the return trip back up.

A couple more switchbacks up and the trail began to parallel a high rock wall, stained with black, green and white streaks caused by years of winds and rain. It was a beautiful sight so I stopped to take a picture. When I finished taking the picture I looked down the trail and noticed the three young men walking towards us. But two of them were now carrying the third. I quickly asked them if he was hurt and could we be of any help? “No” they exclaimed, “he just can’t walk very well”. A further conversation revealed that their friend was disabled and for the most part confined to a wheel chair.

It had been the boy’s lifelong dream to hike the Grand Canyon, but being confined to a wheel chair it had been nothing more than a dream. Then his three friends decided that they could help to make it more than just a dream. They figured that they could actually make

it happen. They planned out the hike, received a hiking permit from the park service, packed their gear, set him in his wheel chair, and started on the journey of a lifetime. Down the canyon they went, over the bumpy Bright Angel trail, one carrying the pack and the other two trying to keep the wheel chair upright as it jostled down the trail. They kept this up for about a mile until the trail became so rough that they had to discard the wheel chair and carry him down the rest of the way in their arms. One boy took the pack ahead for about three-hundred yards, while the other two carried the boy for a hundred yards, rested, went another hundred yards, rested, and then caught up with the pack bearer. One would then trade off carrying the pack while the other helped carry the boy, who must have weighed at least 130 pounds. Carry, rest, carry, rest, a hundred yards at a time until they had covered the remaining 3 ½ miles of the trail. They stayed the night at the Indian Garden campground and now they were struggling their way up the canyon trail to the top.

I was so taken with this act of service that I could barely speak. When I gained enough composure to stammer something out I asked if we could be of any help. “No thanks, we can make it” they said. I did offer them some of my water, my box of raisins, even my Oreo cookies, all of which they gratefully accepted. Seeing that they were OK, albeit tired, we wished them the best of luck and continued up the trail on our own journey. We still had to traverse an innumerable number of switchbacks to cover the remaining 3 ½ miles and 3000 foot elevation gain, but our steps were a little lighter, and our spirits a lot higher.

That day hiking out of the Grand Canyon, we had witnessed something even more beautiful than the splendor and grandeur of the canyon itself, even with its 277 miles of length, 18 miles of width, and one mile of depth. We witnessed the awesome beauty of one of Gods greatest creations. We saw three young men saying “Thank you God for all you have given us, now how can we repay you”?

“Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” (Matt. 25:40.)

Artist of the MonthDavid LarsenI have been an active photographer

since high school. In my early career, I worked in marketing and product management for two major photo companies. I later taught Photography and Digital Photography at a community college. I am now devoting my time to fine art, portrait and real estate

photography. The photos displayed are of the ApacheLand movie ranch.

ApacheLand was built in 1959-60 and was the site for many western television shows and movies. My photos were mostly taken in 2003, before it was destroyed by fire on February 14, 2004.

The barn and “Elvis” chapel survived the fire and are now located at the Superstition Mountain Museum. More of the ApacheLand history is available at the museum or on the web.

In The Territory.........Submitted by Mike Karr

The Mountaineer recently sought contributing articles, and since I formerly owned a tour and travel company, and am always searching for unique venues to take our winter guests, I thought I'd share some of these out-of-the-way places with my fellow MountainBrook residents.

This initial visit is to the Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery which features “The Eddie Basha Collection”. As you approach the gallery at 22402 S. Basha Road in Chandler, you feel like you're in an industrial district instead of about to embark on a world class collection of Western American and American Indian art. The gallery is attached to Basha's corporate offices and warehouse distribution center.

Eddie Basha's Aunt Zelma instilled in him the love of art, and that, combined with a degree in history from Stanford, is what turned a hobby of collecting art into a passion which he enjoyed with his aunt for over 30 years. The gallery which features over 3,000 artifacts is separated into several distinct areas such as the hand-woven baskets from the Pima, Yavapai and Apache tribes primarily from the 1800's. There is a separate area for Indian pottery which depicts the various religious and ceremonial aspects of the tribes. Zuni fetishes of mountain lions, wolves, badgers, bears and eagles are featured along with some jewelry displays. The majority of the museum is dedicated to some spectacular Western and Indian paintings. My favorite display area (and probably because we have our own little collection of kachinas) was the Hopi Katsinas. These hand-carved wooden “spirit gods” are simply sensational.

If you're looking for someplace a little different and out-of-the-way, then the Basha Gallery is worth the trip. And the best part about this gallery.........it's FREE! Made me want to go shop at Basha's as a little pay-back for what they are contributing to our community.

This, That & Other Things

Recipe RoundupDuring the past week I have

heard people talking about a recipe they want from an event they attended here at MountainBrook Village. Diana and I thought if we post the request in the Mountaineer, with luck the person with knowledge of the recipe will send an email to [email protected] . The recipe will be printed in the following edition of the Mountaineer. Hopefully, the recipe will not exceed our 500 word limit for articles. This just might open up an opportunity for a new column.

Request: A delicious roasted potato salad, served at the Illinois Party held on Sunday, March 13. I was fortunate to get one of the last servings of this dish and I will verify that it is very good.

Waiting for the response. Thank you all in advance!

Look pleasant and laugh. Life is taking your photograph

Come on down to the courts and make some new friends while getting good exercise.

PinochleBarb Hofmeister

The Thursday evening group has been having great attendance this winter. We are excited for all the players who join us weekly. High scores this month were scored by the following people: Ray Needham, 565. LaVoyce Nolan 548, Delores OFallon 520, Nellie Moore 664 and on the same night Ed Joyce tied with Nellie with another 664. Another night Ed Joyce topped 607 for the high score. March 16th Barb Hofmeister reached 608 and Linda Sandell came in second with 566. Three times on March 16 Barb witnessed three different players (herself included) who ended up with all but one card for a double run which is very rare. One of these nights someone will do it. Will it be you? Come early if you need a little refresher on pinochle.

The Tuesday Afternoon Ladies’ Pinochle Group It was exciting to have the snowbirds play with us on Tuesday afternoon. The first place winner was Raquel James for her 9 games –a total high so far. There were four 2nd place winners with 6 games for each ---Diane Kissner, Suzanne Kadlec, Sharon Hanson and Maria Langley. We had an interesting “once in a lifetime” hand this month. Suzanne Kadlec with her partner Diane Kissner laid down a double run of hearts to take the game. If you are interested in playing pinochle come join us Tuesdays 1-3 in Sunset Room A. For info call 480-671-4030.

The Legend of the Dogwood Tree

When Christ was on earth, The dogwood grew to a

Towering size with lovely hue. Its branches were strong and interwoven

And for Christ’s cross Its timbers were chosen.

Being distressed at the use of this wood, Christ made a promise Which still holds good:

“Not ever again shall the dogwood grow

To be large enough for such a tree, And so slender and twisted

It shall always be with cross-shaped Blossoms for all to see.

The petals shall have bloodstains

Marked in brown and in the Blossom’s center a thorny crown.

All who see it will think of Me, Nailed to a cross from the dogwood tree.

Protected and cherished this tree shall be A reflection to all of my agony.”

The Easter Parade What shall I wear for the Easter Parade? A dress that’s the color of marmalade With a border embroidered in light blue cornflowers Like the edge of a meadow after spring showers And a matching hat round as a top you can spin And elastic to hold it on under my chin And brand-new shoes whiter than newly-poured cream With heart-shaped, golden buckles that gleam;

And I’ll carry a small purse of butterfly blue With a penny for me and a penny for you To buy us both glasses of cold lemonade When we walk, hand in hand, in the Easter Parade. ~Author William Jay Smith~
