Dear Secretary General:

It is with great regret that we learned of your travel plans forthe month of June, thus precluding your meeting with our conferencegroup on June 9th, as had been scheduled.

Due to further last-minute changes, other key speakers have alsobeen called away from New York during this time period. We didseek suitable replacements for these speakers, but found itextremely difficult at this late date. After long deliberation,we decided it more to the purpose of the program and to the ad-vantage of the United Nations to cancel the program at this time.

I very much appreciate your interest in our June program this yearand the able assistance of your staff in making all necessaryarrangements .

We, naturally, understand the exigencies of your eminent position, which take you abroad in June, and do look forward to an opportunityin the future to meet with you again.

Dear Secretary General: • --• '<?/: <//•'', i) y

The Young Presidents' Organization Seminar at the UnitedNations was a tremendous success and your w i l l i n g to take so muchof your time with YPO was the outstanding feature of this Seminar.

In YPO we have two educational universities a year, oneprimarily North American, and the other more oriented towards theinternational world. While many organizations that hold meetingsw i l l try to obtain one "star" quality speaker and then presenttechnical discussions for their own industry, because of the diversenature of the businesses of YPO members, we have an intensive educa-tional university involving many outstanding leaders from manyfields.

We have just completed our North American University atAcapulco wherein we had about 600 members and wives plus approxi-mately 50 faculty representatives. Amoung the faculty, wereDr. Henry Kissinger, John Connelly, George Bush, B i l l y Graham,Charles Schulze - Chief Economic Advisor to President Carter, andthe following presidents of major corporations:

Pete Estes, General MotorsDon Kendall, Pepsi ColaJim Shepley, TimeJim Duffy, ABC TV

Also, at 'our recent, much smaller Southern Area Conferencein Florida, we had Senator Richard Stone, Frank Borman, MichaelBlumenthal, Jerome Kurtz from the IRS, Richard Voel 1 from BeatriceFoods, Ronald Reagan, Kris Kraft from NASA, and many others.

The YPO members attending Rio International Universityw i l l be entirely separate group of members, of which nearly 200members are international members from 30 different countries.

I need not tell you how enlighteningand impressive YPO's exposure to the United Nations was last year.I'm sure I speak for all last year's attendees when I say that theirUN experience was one they shall always treasure.

I feel it is very important to expose our members to both thepragmatics and principles of the United Nations, giving them theopportunity to build a working relationship on true understandingrather than vague misconceptions and generalities. Dear Dr. Waldheim:

10017

As Chairman of the recent Young Presidents' Organization Seminar, I wouldlike to tell you how honored we were by your reception and your informativediscussion with our group.

Our entire United Nations experience was one that we all shall treasure. All of us that participated, left the United Nations with a new feeling ofgenuine enthusiasm. If more people could have the exposure to the UnitedNations that we were privileged to have, I am sure that, at least in thecase of the American Business Community, we could build a positive forcein aiding the United Nations in doijig its most important work.

I don't believe that most small and medium size corporations reallyunderstand the United Nations, and this lack of understanding creates acertain atmosphere of suspicion. However, the efforts on behalf of yourselfand your staff to tell the United Nations' story, surely will pay greatdividends for everyone.

As a result of our recent meeting, I assure you you now have twenty-fivenew people in the business community enthusiastically selling the UnitedNations. This may be a small start, but the longest journey must beginwith the first step. If we can be of any service to you in the future, Itrust that you or your staff will inform us as to how we might be ofassistance.

Our prayers and every good wish for your continued success.

Sincerely,

YPO in Brief

Founded in 1950, the Young Presidents' Organiz;tion (YPO) is an educational association of chiefexecutive officers who have become president ofmulti-million dollar company before the age of 4Membership, drawn for the most part from smaland medium-sized firms, numbers over 3,600 tofexecutives from more than 47 countries and eve:field of business activity, from finance and com-munications to manufacturing and construction.

The typical YPOer is 43 years of age and marrie<He or she has been associated with a primary coipany for over 10 years and its president for abot9 years. The YPOer is active in the community iiareas related to the social responsibility of busineand in public speaking.

Many members are involved in more than onecategory of professional endeavor. Currently 34?of the membership is engaged in manufacturing;19% in retail or wholesale; 18% in service; 15%finance; 13% in construction; 5% in naturalresources; and 4% in transportation. About 65%of YPO companies are privately owned, 35 %publicly owned. The majority of companies havesales of over $15 million per year; some exceed tl$1 billion mark.

YPO is a member-run organization, led by the International President, the Executive Committee a)the Board of Directors, all elected from the

membership. There are more than 83 memberchapters around the world. International Head-quarters is in New York, where a professional staffadministers the various programs.

The membership of YPO is committed to the goalsof continuing professional education, peer dialogueand high-level idea exchange. Each year a fullschedule of chapter meetings, internationalseminars, area conferences and universities forpresidents offers numerous self-development oppor-tunities for the member in his or her capacity ascorporate president, family person and responsiblecitizen.

YPO is a not-for-profit corporation, self-financedthrough membership dues and program subscrip-tion fees. A select organization, YPO maintains ahigh standard of excellence through membership re-quirements and a policy of member retirement atthe age of 50.

lAP-What is it?The Individual Action Program, or IAP, is thepublic sector oriented arm of YPO, which focuseson the dynamic relationship of business to govern-ment and society as a whole. Given the increasinginteraction among these spheres, IAP considers itgood business and enlightened management forYPOers to understand the important interrelation-ships in these domains, on both the domestic andinternational fronts, and to take an active part inpublic service programs.

Recognized leaders in their respective fields, members who participate in IAP activities lookbeyond their immediate business environment toexercise leadership in their roles as local, nationaland global citizens. As the name of the program in-dicates, their involvement is predicated upon "in-dividual action" — that is, YPOers participate inpublic sector activities as private individuals, ratherthan under the auspices of YPO.

Consistent with the organization's goals of educa-tion and idea exchange, YPO has developed a vitalprogram, providing stimulating educational oppor-tunities for the member, as well as uniquepossibilities for YPOers to match their time, talentand resources to challenging problems in the publicsector.

Conferences are organized during the year tofamiliarize members with prominent public institu-tions, leaders and issues. Past programs have fo-cused on a wide variety of topics ranging from theperks and pitfalls of public office, to the future offree enterprise, to the emergence of a neweconomic order.

At one event YPOers ventured behind the scenes atthe United Nations and met with world policy anddecision makers to discuss the organization, objec-tives and direction of that eminent internationalagency. Another conference explored Washington,D.C.'s "Corridors of Power", featuring face-to-facemeetings with national political figures and govern-ment officials for an in-depth look at the primaryissues of inflation, energy, security and governmentregulation. Offering valuable knowledge and in-sight into different segments of the public sector,IAP conferences help YPOers translate their keeninterest in economic, political and social issues intomeaningful public service involvement.

YPO members are able to share their broad ex-perience and education with a much wider au-dience through other IAP activities. Interest and in-volvement is currently concentrated in three majorareas: Community Action at the local level;Government Consultation at the highest levels ofnational political life; and Development Assistanceto countries around the world.

Hundreds of YPOers have offered their profes-sional talent in each of these areas. Rich intheoretical knowledge, practical skills andunderstanding of the dynamics of public sector in-volvement, members have made significant con-tributions on all three fronts.

Development AssistanceInternationally, the YPO membership offersdeveloping countries a tremendous pool of proventechnical, managerial and creative talent on whichto draw. The Individual Action Program (IAP) hasworked with international development agencies —UN, UNDP, and UNIDO among them —as well astrade organizations, regional banks, business con-sortia, management training institutes, nationaldevelopment agencies and government ministriesdirectly, to match the most appropriate YPOexpertise and experience to challenging assignmentsin the developing world.

Member involvement in development assistancemissions originates with a request from an in-dividual government, addressed directly to YPO orrelayed to the association through an internationaldevelopment agency, proposing the time frame andgoals for the mission, in accordance with the coun-try's designated development objectives. IAP chair-man and staff then coordinate YPO's input in closeconsultation with funding agency(ies), subject ofcourse to the approval of the host country govern-ment.

In keeping with YPO's non-political and non-"cause" oriented profile, members take part inthese missions as private individuals. This enablesIAP to develop an impressive breadth of activitiesindependent of official endorsement by YPO, Inc.The wide range of past mission activities —from ananalysis of industrial growth potential in LatinAmerica, to a review of Middle Eastern export pro-blems in the metals and electronics industries, to aprobing of trade opportunities in Eastern Europe —reflects this freedom.

YPO's Individual Action Program has most typical-ly been requested to bring together a 6-10 memberYPO team for a 2-3 week mission. Naturally, theexact composition and format of each mission re-mains flexible for custom tailoring to the respectivehost country's requirements.

YPOers volunteer their time and assistance on ano-fee basis. Therefore, costs to the requestinggovernment are limited to reimbursement of ex-penses actually incurred by the YPO team and s ta f f .

As versatile as it is flexible, YPO assistance lendsitself to many applications, briefly listed below.

A. Consultations with government and industry, regional bank, or international agency officials,to:

• review development strategies for applicabil-ity and adaptability of new technologies, anddiscussion of alternatives.

Page 41: Items-in-Young President's Organization, Inc. (YPO)€¦ · course forward any such changes to your office at the time of the event, and, if desired, follow up after the event by

• assist in the pre-project and pre-programmingstages of development assistance.

• identify financial and operational re-quirements for proposed commercial and in-dustrial ventures or projects, and evaluate in-vestment growth potential.

• trouble-shoot ongoing commercial and in-dustrial operations, such as recently centralizedindustries and projects where governments aredirectly interested and involved.

• review educational programs in managementadministration, particularly engineering andmarketing, for coordination with nationaldevelopment goals, and identify sources ofinter-country training and exchange of "know-how."

B. Industry-to-industry consultations —usually on-site visits — to:

• strengthen cost, production, quality and safe-ty controls, and organizational structure of hostcountry operations.

• evaluate products for export potential andreview local and international market entrystrategies.

• analyze hiring, training and compensationpractices for improved morale and productivity.

C. Seminars —normally incorporating lectures,round-table discussions and case study analysis— to:

• encourage and strengthen management andplanning capabilities of host countries.

• promote continued high-level contact be-tween international businessmen.

According to one UNIDO official associated withfour YPO-assisted missions, "YPOers represent thecream of the crop of top management at their mostenergetic span of l i f e . . .in every case the host's ex-pectations were exceeded and we've had a requestfor additional missions".

YPOers themselves cite again and again thestimulation and inspiration sparked by their ex-change of ideas and experiences with businessmenaround the world. The missions, then, are truly atwo-way educational experience highly valued byall who participate.

College StudiesChapters have performed management studies forarea colleges, including analyses of financialmanagement and long-range planning, among othertopics, for boards of trustees and college ad-ministrations.

TrusteeshipsColleges, hospitals, libraries and museums nation-wide have requested board nominations from themembership. Working in conjunction with nationalassociations, IAP seeks to match interestedmembers to the various openings.

Business ConferencesMembers often volunteer to serve as panelists atbusiness conferences held at colleges and univer-sities (or under the auspices of community agen-cies) in their states. Informal give-and-take sessionsfoster an open and frank dialogue among students, residents and the corporate presidents. Frequentlychallenging, the sessions cover a wide range ofbusiness and social issues—from free enterprise toecology, from employment practices to minorityproblems.

Education ProgramsInvolvement in education has taken many forms. Some chapters have a revolving chair on theBusiness Advisory Council to a graduate businessschool in the area. An enterprising West CoastYPOer coordinated a work/study program withlocal campuses to harness student interest and in-genuity in tackling selected projects and problemswithin YPO firms. Through this program graduatebusiness students can get a firsthand look at thechallenges they will be facing in the corporateworld.

Other chapters organize guest lecture series or par-ticipate in panel discussions on business themes atarea colleges. Still other chapters target their IAPprograms to the senior and even the junior highschool levels, meeting with local teachers to discusscogent economic principles, models and policies forclassroom use, to go hand-in-hand with otherstudy materials.

Members also participate as guest lecturers in in-dustry and research institute-sponsored programsto educate public opinion makers about theeconomic system and its vital role in society.

Junior AchievementEach year groups of talented high school studentsthroughout the U.S. set up and operate mini-corporations, learning firsthand the meaning ofprivate enterprise. Several interested YPOers judgethe "Young President of the Year" contest, coor-dinated by Junior Achievement, Inc., and awardscholarship funds donated by chapters andmembers during YPO's yearly JA fund drive.

YPO community activities are primarily coor-dinated at the chapter level through the IAPChapter Chairman. However, Headquarters staffserves as a clearing house for information on pastprograms and as an ongoing data and resourcebank to assist chapter chairmen in launching newand innovative programs of interest and value tofellow members.
