15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.
Reflect
Peter had messed up really bad. On the night that Jesus was arrested and hauled off to be beaten and crucified, Peter had denied even knowing Jesus--three times! But as we read in today’s passage, Jesus was willing to let Peter another chance, time and time again, giving him a new beginning. Jesus is all about the new beginning. When we recognize that we have done wrong, ask for forgiveness, and change our ways, Jesus is always willing to give us a fresh start. At the same time, he expects us to be just as forgiving to others. When somebody seeks our forgiveness, Jesus wants us to be just as merciful to them as he was to Peter.
Respond
Are you carrying a grudge or harboring bad feelings against somebody? Take some time, now, to pray for that person. Ask God to soften your heart and give you the compassion to forgive that person. Not only will you be doing what Jesus wants you to do, you’ll feel better about the situation, too.
This is the day The Lord has made, I will rejoice and be
glad in it.
