Ineach stanza h e saluted h im as th e om nipre s ent pow er pervadingon earth , h eavens , all stars and planets of th e Univers e , and allth at exists th ere in. H e bow ed to H im as caus e and effect of allth at h appens , th e giver of sustenance, m aster of battles andordainer of peace, th e nem e s is of tyrants and saviour of th erigh teous , th e fountainh ead of w isdom and th e source of all th atis beautiful, ever m erciful and ever com pas s ionate .

View ed from anoth er dim ens ion, all th at h appens to us inlife is th e outcom e of our Karm as , or th e past deeds , m ay bein th is life or th e earlier one s . Th e s e k arm as leave an im printon our psych e in th e form of s am s k aras or predispos itions . Th ek arm as are very pow erful and even th e gods lik e m oon, sunand Brah m a h ave not been able to e scape th e negative effectsof k arm a. Th ere is only one pow er th at can ch ange k arm a andgrant a releas e , and th at is God’s com pas s ion, for H e as th e Lordof univers e is also th e lord of k arm a. H is grace and benedictionalone can h elp us transcend th e effects of k arm a. Th us w h enw e pray to h im , H e break s th e s h ack les of k arm a and s ets usfree . Th is indeed is th e m iraculous pow er of prayer ens h rinedin th e divine w ords of Jaap Sah ib.

Jaap Sah ib is not a prayer of a particular religion or faith .It is a universal prayer w h ich h ails God in all H is variedattribute s and in th e proce s s s e e k s H is grace . In fact Jaap Sah ibits elf says , “Nam astang am ajbe”, th at is , salutation to god w h obelongs to no one religion. Even th e language of Jaap Sah ibbelongs to no one particular religion, country or region.

Som e people com pare it w ith Vis h nu Sah as ranam a. In fact,apart from Vis h nu Sah as ranam a, th e re are th re e m oreSah as ranam as available i.e . Siva Sah as ranam a, LalitaSah as ranam a, and Sri Ram a Sah as ranam a. In all th e s e w ork s ,th e auth ors h ave de scribed th e attribute s in th e m anife st form sof th e ir spiritual guide or god. But in Jaap Sah ib, Guru GobindSingh h as de scribed and bow ed to th e unm anife st aspect of th eSuprem e Being. H e is de scribed as form les s , m ost pow erful,w ith out any faults and above all w orldly entanglem ents , as th ecreator as w ell as th e de stroyer; beautiful as w ell as h orrifying;generous as w ell as h ard h earted.

In th e com pos itions of th e saints of th e m iddle age s as w ellas in Gurbani, th e Lord is de scribed as k ind, forgiving and

Th e tyrannical rulers h ad m ade lifedifficult for th e public and th us s elf pre s ervation w as of greatim portance . To inculcate th e feeling of courage in th e m indsof frigh tened population and prepare th em for w ars , Guru Jiincluded th e attribute s of th e Lord th at s h ow ed H im as de stroyerof th e s inners and be stow er of all strength to th e righ teous .

Th e m eters us ed in Jaap Sah ib are such th at inspire zealand enth us iasm in th e reader. Th e s e are arranged in such a w ayth at a soldier w h ile figh ting in th e battle could follow footm ovem ents of sw ord figh t as w ell as gain vigour and inspirationfrom th e Lord’s pow erful nam e s by reciting Jaap Sah ib.

Jaap Sah ib is a com pos ition purely in prais e of th eUnm anife st Lord and ris e s above th e narrow s h ack les of anyparticular religion or belief. It can be safely said th at it is m eantfor th e w h ole univers e and not for any specific faith , country,region or culture .
