With last summer’s public announcement by Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, the Foundation’s newest initiative has quickly moved from planning phase into reality. Inspiring Journeys: A Campaign for Jenny Lake is a collaboration between Grand Teton National Park and Grand Teton National Park Foundation. The project will address deteriorating conditions and inadequate facilities in order to better connect people to this magnificent place, inspiring generations of future visitors to become park lovers and supporters. The Foundation’s $13.4 million campaign, along with $3 million in park-funded work, will provide a far-reaching $16.4 million transformation at Jenny Lake. Fundraising is targeted to be completed by August 25, 2016, the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. As of May 2014, the Foundation has raised $7.8 million toward the goal.

Over the years, many of the facilities at Jenny Lake have been loved to death as millions of visitors seek the area’s famous views. “Foundation supporters are keenly aware that the park has a long list of needs and shrinking funds to address them,” Foundation President Leslie Mattson says. “If we want to see a holistic improvement project, private philanthropy will need to lead the effort.” As with the Foundation’s role in providing most of the funding for the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center in Moose, Foundation involvement at Jenny Lake will allow for a higher quality and more impactful project.

“At its core, Inspiring Journeys is about trails. The popular hiking destinations at Jenny Lake are an incredible introduction to wilderness for hundreds of thousands of visitors each summer,” Mattson says. “Visitors are currently confronted with crowding and poor conditions on the trails and at the most popular hiking destinations—generally not the desired first impression of our national park.”

Inspiring Journeys aims to reverse years of accumulated trail damage, providing a safer and more inspiring experience for hikers of all abilities. By encouraging one-way hiking on a series of loop trails, the perception of crowding is decreased. The project will also make much needed improvements in and around the existing Jenny Lake Visitor Center.

In early May, a helicopter transported 260 tons of stone and crushed aggregate to backcountry staging sites in preparation for trail improvements that will include rustic steps, retaining walls, and drainage swales. According to Matt Hazard, the park’s lead landscape architect for this project, “the trail crew will complete the work started last summer on the lake’s south shore, and visitors can also expect to see construction between the west boat dock and Hidden Falls along the north side of Cascade Creek. Although hikers will need to follow reroutes in various places this year, public access to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point should always be possible.” Hazard also notes that the horse trail that bypasses Inspiration Point will be reconstructed and, therefore, closed much of the summer season. Access to popular climbing routes will be maintained.

Let’s begin in the center of Town Square. The elk antler arches that mark the four corners of George Washington Memorial Park are among the most-photographed landmarks in Jackson Hole. Members of the local Rotary Club built the first one on the southwest corner (at Broadway and Cache Street) in 1953 with antlers collected in the spring by a local Boy Scout troop on the National Elk Refuge. The troop still collects the antlers every spring and holds their annual antler auction during Elk Fest, the Saturday before Memorial Day.

Visitors and local residents enjoy driving through Grand Teton National park to gaze at the stunning mountain vistas. Most of the motor drives through the park are through fields covered with gray-blue sagebrush. One of the most iconic plans of the American West, the hardy, silvery sagebrush grows only in the western United States and Canada. Its wonderfully pungent fragrance earned it the nickname “cowboy cologne.”

After the establishment of Yellowstone National Park there was growing awareness of the need to expand to the south both to protect the scenic beauty of the Tetons and the wintering range for wildlife. In a series of meetings held in Jackson Hole the idea of a new park was founded and the park was established in 1929. The superintendent of Yellowstone Horace Albright, who participated in those meetings, reached out to John D. Rockefeller, who later gave 35,000 acres to the United States government that was incorporated into the park and protected the scenic foreground of the park’s dramatic mountains.

With the views of the Teton peaks rising to the west, you may be curious about the early skiers who strapped long boards to their feet and took a leap of faith for the thrill of swishing down the slopes. In

the winters of the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60’s, a Jackson Hole local named Neil Rafferty, the developer of Snow King Resort in the town of Jackson, installed a rope tow at the top of Teton Pass on Highway 22. At 10 cents per ride, this allowed locals to ski during the early part of winter before Snow King had enough snow to open for the season. At the end of the day, when Rafferty turned off the rope tow, everyone would ski down what is now called the Old Pass Road. Jackson is now so well-known for skiing that SKI Magazine named Jackson Mountain Resort the #1 Resort in North America for 2014.

Other pioneers climbed the peaks of the Tetons simply for the challenge. No one knows for sure who first climbed the highest peak in the Teton Range, the 13,770-foot Grand Teton. The first undisputed ascent of the Grand Teton was in 1898 by William Owen, Franklin Spalding, John Shive, and Frank Peterson. In 1927 Mount Owen the second-highest peak in the Teton Range, rising to the northeast of the Grand Teton, was named after the climber, and the Owen-Spalding route remains on of the peak’s most popular climbing routes.

From the tops of the Tetons, let’s return to the Town of Jackson to enjoy some well-deserved refreshment. The Wort Hotel and Million Dollar Cowboy Bar are two of the most iconic institutions in Jackson. The Wort Hotel stands at the corner of Broadway and Glenwood Streets. Completed by the Wort brothers in 1941, it features the famous S-curved Silver Dollar Bar inlaid with 2,034 uncirculated 1921 Liberty silver dollars from he Federal Reserve Bank in Denver. The world-renowned Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, on the west side of the Town Square and with the Wyoming cowboy on a bucking bronco on the roof, was first owned by an unsavory character by the name of Joe Ruby. He was run out of town after he took a shot at one of his patrons!  Modern visitors will enjoy far-improved customer service at the bars, restaurants, cafes, shops, galleries, and other businesses throughout the community. 

One hundred years have passed since it was proposed that the Town of Jackson should be incorporated on September 21, 1914. Forty-eight votes were cast in favor of incorporation and twenty-one votes against. At Teton Raptor Center we focus on helping these magnificent animals through educational programming, conservation initiatives and rehabilitative care. Each year our educational programs provide more than 25,000 people with a bird’s-eye-view of the world of raptors. Our conservation projects help protect birds of prey and their habitat throughout the country. And our rehab clinic provides critical care to dozens of injured, ill and orphaned birds, giving many a second chance at freedom.

Teton Raptor Center has a long history in Jackson Hole, beginning with renowned local raptor biologist Roger Smith. In 1992 Roger began assisting Grand Teton National Park officials with the medical care of many raptors that were injured through human-caused interactions such as power line collisions, window strikes, car strikes and poisonings. The demand became so great that Roger, in partnership with his wife Margaret Creel, also a wildlife biologist, founded the Teton Raptor Fund (TRF) to provide a formal means of helping these birds. Seventeen years later, TRF has grown into Teton Raptor Center, a national leader in raptor biology, rehabilitation and conservation education.

This summer, look for TRC’s resident raptors at community events including Old Bill’s Fun Run on September 6th. TRC also offers a one hour Raptor Encounter program featuring live birds of prey at the historic Hardeman Ranch in Wilson every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at noon or 2pm. Reservations are appreciated, but not required, and participants of every age are welcome. Alive at 5 is in the Teton Village Commons every Wednesday from July 7 through August 27 at 5pm.
