Vertical Assemblies – Holocaust Memorial Day 27th January

This week you have all been involved in your vertical assemblies and discussing interesting

or favourite journeys.

Journeys is the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2014 and through understanding them

we can learn how journeys themselves became part of genocide, and how the journeys

undertaken were often experiences of persecution and terror for so many people who

suffered in the Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution and in the subsequent genocides. We

can also learn about the life stories of journeys that brought survivors to the UK and

how, in many instances, journeys of return have been part of the experience of rebuilding.

Many of you have shared your own personal journeys with us ranging from favourite holidays, time spent with

family and even sporting journeys – all of them important. Look out for the display in the Key Stage 3 Hub.

Springs Lane Entrance

Following a review of our site security and safety,

we are making the wide vehicle and pedestrian

entrance on Springs Lane, vehicles only. There is no

real path and no opportunity to insert safe access

away from cars because of an electricity substation.

Mixing cars and students as we currently do is not

safe. We may not have had an accident, but this

becomes increasingly likely if we continue as at

present.

Therefore, from Tuesday 4th March when you

return after half term, the Springs Lane entrance will

be vehicle only. A CCTV camera already monitors

it and you must not be found using it. It does mean

you will need to either walk up Wheatley Lane or

further along to the Springs Lane pedestrian

entrance if you are coming from ‘Ben Rhydding’ but

it will mean you are safe.

Well done to everyone who wore their Christmas jumper with pride, just

before Christmas. We raised a total of £2147.33 and have received an

official thank you from ‘Save the Children’.

Options Timings

The Year 9 options process starts on Tuesday 4th February with your

options assembly. You will hear more about choices, subjects, events and

timings then, but please be aware of the following;

Recruiting our New Headteacher

Following Mrs James’ decision to retire in the summer, the governors are in the process of finding her successor.

She is going to be a very hard act to follow; in her 12 years here Mrs James has led and inspired students and staff

to ever-improving achievement. IGS is a calm and orderly school with an ethos of trust and care and students who

have a highly positive attitude to learning. We need to build on this secure and strong base as we continue our

journey to excellence.

The post is advertised on the TES website this week and full details will be on the school website. Interviews are

scheduled for February 19th and 20th, so that, if all goes well and we find the right person, we will be able to make

the appointment by half term. Mrs James will not be leaving until August 31st.

the final. Who will be victorious in S band?

East Path

Can I remind students the East Path; that runs behind the swimming pool, is a transit route only. Students should

not congregate on the path between the bungalow and the swimming pool unless they are in a designated lunch

queue.

Mr Rignall

Run Mr Milburn Run!

You may have seen Mr Milburn limbering up and running around the school. His training

regime is well underway but he still needs your encouragement.

So, why not help him reach his fundraising target by guessing his finish time at

guessmyfinishtime.com or following Mr Milburn on Twitter @GetTimGoing or sponsor

him at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com.

Career of the week: Hospitality/Catering

Manager

The Work: you could work in hotels, small

independent restaurants, eateries that are part of a

large chain, fast food outlets, and larger catering

organisations such as business or factory canteens,

hospitals or schools. Your duties would include:

Planning menus.

Advertising vacancies and recruiting staff.

Making sure that all staff are fully trained.

Keeping staff motivated to provide the

highest standard of service.

Organising shifts and rotas.

Managing stock control and budgets.

Running the business in line with strict

hygiene, health and safety guidelines.

Entry Requirements: many large restaurants, fast food chains and catering companies run management training

schemes that can lead to management roles. You would usually need a foundation degree, a degree or relevant

experience in order to be accepted on a scheme. Prior to this there are full and part time college courses and

apprenticeships available in hospitality and catering. To work as a catering manager you will need to have the ability

to manage staff, strong customer service skills and to be able to work with figures.

Training and Development: if you enter this work without a degree you could work towards a qualification

such as the Level 4 diploma in advanced hospitality and tourism management. There are 1 year BA (Hons)

conversion degree courses in Service Sector Management for those people with a degree not related to hospitality.

There are also postgraduate diplomas or masters in hospitality management for graduates with relevant degrees.

Pay: starting salaries for assistant restaurant or catering managers can be between £18-23,000 a year. With

experience this could rise to between £25-40,000 a year.
