The Chief Harem Eunuch'sImpact on Ottoman Religious
and Intellectual Life
Jane Hathaway is Professor of History at Ohio State University. She received her Ph.D. from Princeton’s Department of Near Eastern Studies in 1992 and was a member of the School of Historical Studies, Institute for Advanced Study, in fall 2016. Her specialty is the Ottoman Empire before 1800. She has published a number of books, notably The Arab Lands under Ottoman Rule, 1516-1800 (Pearson, 2008).
Her talk is Chapter 9 of her forthcoming book The Chief Harem Eunuch of the Ottoman Empire: Head of the African Eunuchs in the Sultan’s Palace, which will be published by Cambridge University Press. This chapter deals with the Chief Eunuch’s contributions to Ottoman religious and intellectual life, mainly through endowing educational institutions and providing critical book manuscripts.
