A remarkable achievement to help Arna as she takes the next step in her university education. I wish her all the best and acknowledge the generosity of the Mercy Order. Health Gateway to Industry Schools Program Mrs Agius and Mr Korneliussen recently signed the official Memorandum of Understanding which provides a link for the College to the Health sector. This agreement is with the Health Gateway to Industry Schools program and is an initiative of the Department of Education and is being delivered in partnership with CHECKUP. Representatives of the Gateway to Industry program and the Mackay Base Hospital attended the signing. The program will link schools with industry partners to introduce students to the many career pathways and job options available to them within the health industry. The Health Gateway program will also help to facilitate learning opportunities and experiences for both students and teaching staff. Patties Farewell Festival 2021 On Thursday 21 October, students, parents and staff enjoyed a fun filled day of festivities at the College to celebrate the final day for Year 12 student’s formal schooling. I would like to thank Mr Sean Geoghegan, members of the SRC and staff for organising this day of celebrations. It was great to see so many parents attend and for students to farewell each other and staff in such a special way. I would like to wish our Year 12 students all the best in the upcoming external exams and look forward to seeing them all at the Final Assembly on Thursday 18 November and then on Friday for their Graduation Mass. Semi-formal The Year 11 Semi-formal is coming up on the last day of term, Friday 26 November. Please see Ms Samantha Nutt’s section later in this newsletter for more details.

Sean Geoghegan – Deputy Principal

A big congratulations to the 2021 cohort, and the SRC in particular, for re-establishing the tradition of providing a gift to the College that not only improves the latter’s appearance but also holds educational significance. This year the SRC chose to highlight the fact that despite St Pat’s being one of only four Rats of Tobruk schools in Mackay, no public display existed to acknowledge this fact. Consequently, commemorative plaques were designed, commissioned and unveiled at 9.15am on Thursday October 21, 2021 by the College Captains, Ben van Gestel, Casey Brown, Jordan Bliss and James Neivandt at our inaugural Year 12 Festival. The citation by the captains read as follows: Ben van Gestel: Good morning Mrs Agius, staff, parents, students and friends of the St Patrick’s College community. On behalf of the Year 12 cohort of 2021, it gives us great pleasure to welcome you here today for our inaugural Festival Day. It is the product of many hours of deliberation by this year’s SRC. I would also like to thank those present for being here to witness the unveiling of our cohort’s gift to the school, one which we hope has special educational significance for the year groups, and the generations, which we know will follow us at this great school. As one of only four Rats of Tobruk Schools in Mackay, it was the express wish of this years SRC that our membership of that group be more visibly demonstrated. This is also part of a broader desire to ensure that the true story of Australia, and mankind’s past, is neither distorted nor erased. Casey Brown: Humanity can never progress or have any hope of improving our world if we forget or lose sight of the facts. We also need to acknowledge the good, the evil and the heroism displayed by those generations that came before us and the sacrifices they made. This heroism is still on display, but in a vastly changed context. Jordan Bliss: The last two years of our schooling and our lives have been profoundly altered by a global pandemic, the likes of which have not been seen for more than a 100 years. The heroes are still among us. The scientists, the doctors, the nurses, the paramedics and all those who have made immense sacrifices and taken huge risks to stop us succumbing to what has already killed 5 million people worldwide. James Neivandt: The history of our period is yet to be written and we hope that perhaps, at some future date, students of this college will remember and commemorate the deeds of those who fought to keep us safe. Perhaps they will make an effort to understand the times in which we, the class of 2021, have lived. The story displayed on these plaques which we are about to unveil, is the story of an earlier generation in a world that was very different to ours, but in some ways, disturbingly similar. We hope that these plaques commemorate not only the bravery and contribution of an earlier generation, but also our commitment to make a positive, life-giving contribution to our world. Ben van Gestel: As we move into the third decade of the third millennium, it is our prayer, and our hope, that this college continues to stand as a fortress of truth and never surrenders to those forces and systems that work to erode and deny the value of life and the dignity of humankind. Lest we Forget

Tracey McLeod – Assistant to the Principal: Welfare and Administration SPECIAL REPORT: Managing Overwhelm Due to the pandemic, the world we now live in is a very different place. The hyperconnected nature of our current environment means that we are constantly being reminded of the challenges we face via numerous media and social media channels. Our connectivity to the digital world exposes us to a barrage of messages that can leave us feeling overwhelmed. As a result, many children and their parents are reporting higher levels of stress and anxiety. Unfortunately, our brains have not evolved fast enough to adapt to this digital landscape. The combination of constant access to information and having little control over the situations presented, can be stressful and overwhelming. It is therefore important for adult carers to check in with their children and be aware of what information they may have been exposed to. It may not necessarily be the information itself that is harmful, but more their inability to process and make

sense of it. Providing children with the skills and strategies to cope will enable them to flourish and thrive, socially, emotionally and academically. The blueprint for parenting, based on our own experiences, is no longer fit for purpose in raising kids as citizens of tomorrow. This can be inherently stressful and overwhelming, not only for parents and carers, but children alike. If left untreated or unmanaged, constant stress and anxiety can lead to a number of behavioural issues or health consequences. This Special Report suggests a number of strategies to help manage any feelings of overwhelm that you or your child may be experiencing. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please seek medical or professional help. Mark Casey – Pastoral Care Coordinator Valedictory 2021 The recent Valedictory night celebrated the successes of the year and was a great opportunity for year 12 students to be congratulated for their efforts. Parents and staff were proud to see the many students that attained awards for effort in the classroom as well as awards for academic performance. The behaviour of all was exemplary and all students should be proud of the way they conducted themselves throughout rehearsal and on the night. It could not have been such a success without the tireless efforts of the St Patrick’s College office staff as well as the generous time given by many St Patrick’s College staff.

Marty Hollis – Acting Sports Coordinator Sports Award On Friday 15 October, the college celebrated the sporting achievements for the 2021 year. It was our 30th presentation. I personally wanted to thank all the students, families, staff and external community members who came and supported individual and team efforts. I believe this wonderful college community value and understand that extra curricular sporting teams build the college ethos, an individual’s Catholic identity, enhance self-development/ welfare and lastly relationships. I believe this college has the premier sporting curriculum in the whole region and as such, it is an excellent platform for students to showcase their talent. Showcase their passion and desire. Without such a supportive network, I do not believe the level or standard to which students achieved in 2021 would have been possible. Thank-you St Patrick’s Community.

House Cup During the final assembly as a school, we acknowledged the efforts from all students who participated in various academic, cultural and sporting endeavours within the 2021 year. Students earnt participation points from the 71 events we accounted for the entire year. Although there is a winner at the end of the day, the main focus of this cup is participation and college culture. We want students to get involved, challenge themselves in new environments and ultimately experience and create a legacy of what it means to be a St Patrick’s community member. It is with great pleasure that the House that won for 2021 was Chisholm. Totals listed below.

1st – Chisholm (2,006 points) 2nd – Colin (1,894 points) 3rd – Rice (1,767 points) 4th – McAuley (1,746 points)

We will compile all donations and present them to a St Vincent de Paul representative at the Year 11 Christmas Liturgy on the last day of Term 4. Our donations will go towards helping families in the Mackay area, and you will be assisting those locally to have a Joyful and Happy Christmas. So please dig deep and help those experiencing difficulties, and spread some Christmas cheer.
