Janelle Agius – Principal This weekend we celebrate Father’s Day and I would encourage all to remember their fathers, or those who fulfil the father role in their lives, on Sunday. In reflecting on my own life, I was blessed to have a wonderful, gentle and caring man as my Dad. Year 12 Retreat Catholic schooling is centred on our spirituality as Catholics and the development of the Catholic community. The Year 12 Retreat is a very important aspect of our Catholic life at St Patrick’s College. I wish to thank all students who participated and express my disappointment of the many that decided not to attend. This week the Year 12 students had a two day retreat with Mr Michael Fitzpatrick. Many of the students have had a one day experience with Mr Fitzpatrick previously, but all have agreed that the Year 12 retreat, with its focus on setting things right for the next stage of their journey, has been most significant and memorable for them. The highlight of the retreat for many students was the web of connections, that they created by discussing significant events that have occurred in their two years at the College. The web was then symbolically cut, indicating what will happen as they graduate in a few short weeks and disperse, each taking their piece of the story with them. In a ritual held in the middle of the day, students acknowledged each other, forgave each other and supported each other. Students also received a blessing from the Leadership team. Students were also challenged during the retreat to think about their participation in the wider church community. Year 11 and 12 Exam Timetable The Term 3 exam timetable is now available through Parent Lounge, Student Café and the College Website. This weekend we celebrate Father’s Day and I would encourage all to remember their fathers, or those who fulfil the father role in their lives, on Sunday.

Year 12 Retreat Over the past two days, Year 12 students of St Patrick’s had the opportunity to come together and speak about their relationships and experiences they have shared together. As a big group of students, they do not get many opportunities to talk with each other as a whole. By taking the opportunity to attend the retreat, many of the students had the fortune to meet others students from their year level they would not normally interact with. Students of the graduating class of 2020 could very easily feel as if their entire school career has been one long experiment and that they have missed out on so much. To take a pessimistic view of their education would miss many of the great positives for them.

• They had a full year in Prep – previously many students started directly in Year one and took some time to be ready for school. These students fell quickly behind other students and never caught up.

• They started Year 7 at high school – I have worked in primary schools where Year 7 teachers would consistently comment about the students being ready for high school and filling in time. Most students thrived in the environment where they changed rooms and teachers throughout the day.

• They are older in Year 12 – students are able to obtain their licences earlier, for good or bad, they spend less time on buses to and from school.

• No QCS test – students have missed out on sitting for the Queensland Core Skills test. Parents with older children understand how much anxiety was caused by this test.

• COVID-19 meant less assessment – Lock down in 2020 has created confusion and stress. However, the removal of a piece of assessment from general subjects has been a positive for the students. Less stress.

Many of the St Patrick’s College past students speak with fondness about their relationship with the other students of the College. This bond between students is built upon their experiences between lessons: the sports fixtures, rehearsals/performances, the camps/excursions and the lunch time activities. The retreat was an opportunity to revisit and reflect upon the significance of these events and experiences for these students. With the increase in demands upon the students and the demands of workplace safety, many of the school events from years gone by are harder to maintain in the school year. Experiences are becoming fewer for the students. That is why it is important for us to maintain events like the retreat, so that the students still have an opportunity to come together and develop their relationships, as class mates. For those who attended, I am sure, you found it a worthwhile experience. In the years to come the past students of St Patrick’s College will remember the people more than the buildings.

Parish Mass Update – Churches are open Through the collaborative efforts of a number of Faith communities around Queensland, a plan for Church services has been developed with the approval of the Queensland Government. An industry COVID safe plan for places of worship is in place to minimise the risk of the spread of the disease. Each parish has a COVID Team, who are responsible for implementing the industry plan which Bishop Michael has agreed to. Thank you, to the members of our parish councils, liturgical teams and parishioners who make up these teams. Regular Catholic Church services have resumed in Mackay. Within the Southern Cluster of Mackay, the organisation for each of the different Churches may differ due to the physical size of the Church space, for example, numbers for each service may be restricted to less than 100 for smaller Churches, such as St Mary’s. St Patrick’s Church, on River Street is able to accommodate over 100 people. To facilitate organisation and determine numbers for each mass, we have been asked to book a ticket for masses, this can be done through a booking service. However most services are not full and you are able to sign in at the door before the start of the service. If you would like to book ahead (which does help the parish team): https://www.trybooking.com/BKACF or you can book through the Southern Cluster of Mackay Website: https://www.mackaycatholics.net/

Tracey McLeod – Assistant Principal Welfare Administration SPECIAL REPORT: Celebrating Father’s Day For many years now, the role of fathers has changed and evolved. During the industrial revolution, fathers were often considered detached and distant due to working long hours in factories. However, today things have changed dramatically, with many dads being celebrated for being sensitive, caring and more hands-on. Recent studies have shown that children benefit greatly from having fathers who are present and interacting in everyday activities. This has transformed the understanding of how fathers shape children’s lives from the start, challenging conventional ideas of parenthood and gender. Research also suggests that fathers influence their sons and daughters in different ways, which is especially true during their transition to adolescence. Engaging in regular physical activities can play a key role in influencing children to learn self-control, face challenges, regulate emotions and take manageable risks. In this Special Report, fathers will learn about the positive impact they can have on their child’s mental health and wellbeing, whilst also ensuring they indulge in a little self-care. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help. St Patrick’s College – Student Exam Procedure

1. Read your exam timetable carefully and note all exams. This is YOUR responsibility.

2. Turn up in plenty of time – half hour before most exams or at 8.25 am for morning exams.

3. Wear academic uniform correctly (in correct uniform or detention).

4. Phone the College if you are going to be late or are ill. Illness will usually require a medical certificate to be presented when you return to school. You will still be required to complete the exam.

5. Bring all necessary equipment – spare pens, calculators, rulers, erasers, extra batteries etc in a clear container. You will not be allowed to borrow anything during the exams. Do not bring other materials into the exam.

6. When called over the PA, line up in classes in alphabetical order so that rolls can be marked. This order is also the order that you will sit in for the exam. Follow teacher directions.

7. Dispose of any study notes before you enter the exam room.

8. Once you enter the exam room you must remain silent and not communicate with any other student in any way. TO DISRUPT AN EXAM IS A SERIOUS BREACH OF THE COLLEGE BEHAVIOUR CODE.

9. During perusal time, you may read the items and associated assessment materials. You are not allowed to touch any writing instrument or other equipment. This time is for reading only. Remember perusal means read thoroughly, not skim.

10. During planning time, you may plan how to respond to items and associated assessment material. You may make notes on the stimulus or planning sheet, but may not commence responding to the assessment in the response space or booklet. Notes made during planning are not collected, nor are they graded or used as evidence of achievement.

11. Read the whole paper during perusal and ask questions at that time.

12. Do not ask teachers how to answer questions – they cannot tell you and it wastes your valuable time.

13. At St Patrick’s you may not leave the exam room until the set time, ie the end of the exam.

14. No food is to be taken into exam rooms and water bottles must be kept on the floor.

15. If you wish to speak to a supervisor you must stand in your place. Do NOT raise your hand.

16. MP3s, iPods, Mobile Phones etc are strictly forbidden in the exam room at all times.

17. We are under State and National requirements for the qualifications gained by senior assessment including exams – these require the College to conduct exams under strict, secure, ethical conditions.

18. Rearranging an exam can only be done under very exceptional circumstances which MUST be disclosed to the Administration of the College – rescheduling exams is not desirable because of the reasons stated above.

19. SCHOOL NOTICES will be posted on noticeboards each day. Please check these for any important information.

20. If cheating occurs during the exam the student will be removed from the room immediately and paper invalidated.

21. If a breach is discovered after the exam the paper will be invalidated.

Karlie Tatchell – Regional Indigenous Education Liaison Officer QATSIF Graduation Ngandadyi {Hello in Yuwi language} Recently at the College, we celebrated the graduation of our QATSIF students and the start of their next chapter in life. Guests included Mayor Greg Williamson, staff from Mercy College Mackay, parents and our Parish Priests. Lawson Allen gave a heartfelt reflection, on how QATSIF has impacted upon his learning journey and Mr Stephen Mortimer spoke one on educating all people about the true history of Indigenous history in Australia. All members of the St Patrick’s College Leadership Team would like to wish the QATSIF students the very best.

Deborah Millar – Indigenous Teaching Assistant On Monday 31 August, the College was happy to welcome the Indigenous Career and Transitions Pathways Officer Shelley Major, who spoke with our Year 12 students about their career choices and what the future holds for them. The students participated in an information session about the choices they can make after they finish school. On Tuesday 1 September, we hosted the Year 10 students from Holy Spirit and Mercy College as part of the Year 10 Deadly Learning Session. Presenters from Central Queensland University and Queensland Health were here to speak to the Year 10 students about getting a head start on their studies. A past student Rhys Mackenzie, also spoke about the benefits of having the support and advice from those who work in Catholic Education. A big thank you to those that attended the event.

Danika Hurley – College Counsellor QTAC I have been busy seeing many Year 12 students mapping out their future pathways post schooling and ensuring they have set up their QTAC and ATAR accounts. Below is useful information provided by QTAC regarding the first ATAR release and how to apply for this and QTAC.

Phillip Reid – Science Ambassador Science Week Good Morning Everyone, as you all know, last week we celebrated National Science Week. I would like to thank everyone who got involved.

On Monday 17 August, we demonstrated a chemistry experiment called ‘Elephants Toothpaste’. We wish we could have made the experiment larger, however due to the amount of heat produced, it would have been too dangerous. On Tuesday 18 August, we held an egg dropping competition in D5, where four teams created great contraptions, however only one team successfully transported their egg to the ground without breaking it. On Wednesday 19 August, we had a Senior Mechanical Engineer attend with two of his co-workers, a Project Engineer and Designer. They had great knowledge and insight into a career in engineering and design, and everyone who attended their presentation, got the opportunity to ask in depth questions about their career and were given valuable advice. Students who attended definitely gained a lot of knowledge into what engineering involves.

On Thursday 20 August, Yvette and her friend Jenny brought a five month old wallaroo and wallaby, and a young possum currently being rehabilitated. They also shared lots of knowledge on what they do and shared many interesting facts about our Australian wildlife. This was definitely everyone’s favourite activity during the week.

Lauren Rickards – Science Ambassador Along with the activities held each day, everyone got the opportunity to participate in a Science Quiz. We quizzed everyone on topics relating to many fields of science. After counting everyone’s papers on Friday, we had 92 participants. The points scored by the houses were as follows, Colin house – 126, Rice house – 122, McAuley house – 109, Chisholm house – 69. Of the 92 entries, 71 went into the draw for a $50 Canelands voucher and before we draw the winner, I’d like to thank everyone who participated in Science Week and the Science Quiz.

The winner of the $50 Canelands Voucher is Paris Santacaterina.

Samantha Nutt – Pastoral Care Coordinator Girls Rugby League Recently, the St Patrick’s girls Rugby League team participated in the Mackay District Gala Day Competition, which ran across two full days on Tuesday 11 August and Thursday 27 August. The girls were successful yet again, winning three games and drawing one. The team consisted of Lara Waterson, Jessica Doring, Hannah Zeglio, Kayla Shepherd, Emily Bella, Eden Grigg, Kamiah Grigg, Lara Hutchinson, Paige Smith, Page Brodel, Ruby Mecoles, Amber Ansell, Casey Manzelmann, Lucy Garner,

Caitlin Brownsey, Ayva Gauci, Eve Doull and McKeely Lawton. The girls all played exceptionally well. I would like to say a massive thankyou to Sam Bliss for helping out with the team this year. We were very lucky to have such a knowledgeable sportswoman and role model to look up to. A special mention also goes out to Tanya Anderson - we are so thankful for all the time you dedicate to the girls both before school and after school.

Mark Casey – Pastoral Care Coordinator Rugby Sevens St Patrick’s College entered a team in the Open Females Division of the recent Rugby Sevens Tournament held in Mackay at Quarry Hill.

The team began the tournament in an outstanding display in which they defeated Mackay State High School 33-5. Tries were scored by McKeely Lawton, Eve Doull, as well as Emily Bella crossing the line twice. The girls showed very enterprising play, by making yards through the middle and supporting each other well in broken play.

Next, St Patrick’s College defeated Mackay Christian College 22-10. with tries to Lara Waterson, Jessica Doring, Lucy Garner and Brodie Walsh. Again the girls showed great grit by muscling up in the middle of the field, than using the speed of the outside backs to their advantage. Their last pool game was a hard fought victory 10-7 over a Barbarians team, in which Hannah Zeglio scored twice.

The team was unable to repeat their earlier heroics against Mackay Christian College, losing the Grand Final 10-5, with Jessica Doring crossing for their solitary try. St Pat’s was on the wrong end of a lop-sided penalty count and had some injuries to key players in earlier rounds. Other students involved in the day included Paige Smith, Amber Ansell and Brooke Waterson. Despite this loss, the girls played outstanding Rugby and should be proud of the effort and mettle they exhibited throughout the day.
