From the Pastor’s Desk 2 Mrs, Cari Ramold is in charge of Little Saints (which meets on Wednesdays), Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, and the preparation of couples for marriage. This past week she organized First Reconciliation, and normally would be in charge of First Holy Communion. I say “normally” because Cari and her family are moving to Norfolk, NE. She will be with us until early February. She has been a capable and generous presence on our staff, always among the first to volunteer for jobs that come up unexpectedly – somewhat more the rule than the exception during the COVID-19 time we are in. She loved her job and we loved having her do it. We thank her for her spirit of generosity and contributions during her time here and wish her well

in the future. Until May we will be juggling roles with various people, as Cari has organized things and sought volunteers to help until the end of school. We have already found her successor but she won’t be available until May. Her name is Megan Frerking. In February she will be getting married to Reggie Johansen. Currently she is working on the FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) team at NWMSU. We are delighted and privileged to have her as part of the staff. As a monk I have not had to deal with transitions or changes as frequently as I have as pastor since coming here. Speaking of changes, in exactly a month (February 17th) Ash Wednesday will be here, and we will begin Lent. Normally Ash Wednesday attracts a lot of worshipers seeking ashes. Assuming that our COVID-19 restrictions will still be in place, we will have to have people sign up for Masses in order to keep our distancing in place. We will have Masses at 8 AM and 6 PM for the public, a separate Mass for the school, and a prayer service with distribution of ashes at noon. We will be sprinkling the ashes on top of your heads, rather than smearing the ashes on your foreheads. Likewise, on February 3rd, the Feast of St. Blaise, we will not lay candles on each person’s throat, but give a general blessing to all from the sanctuary, as recommended by the diocesan Liturgist, Fr. Paul Turner. While I prefer the more personal approach, I think it prudent until the pandemic subsides. Hopefully with the arrival of the vaccines, it will be soon. Thank you for your faithfulness and cooperation. We will get through this time together and be stronger for it. I continue to find it a joy to be your pastor! Father Albert, O.S.B.

The Ministry Center Food Pantry needs our church volunteers for April and May. Times: Monday / Wednesday / Friday (1 - 4 PM) Job: Help clients get their groceries. It's a very rewarding experience! Need: 3 volunteers per day. Masks, gloves, and safety precautions are in place to keep everyone safe. If interested, please call Carla Spire (660-528-2212) or Judy Crane (660-254-2427). There will also be a sign up sheet in the gathering space through the end of January. Thank you. ~ Carla and Judy

My question this week is “What does it mean to have a Mass said for someone?”

This is another practice I had heard of, but had not requested myself until recently. So, I searched online and according to shrineofdivinemercy.org: “The Church considers the Mass the greatest possible prayer of intercession because it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the Paschal Mystery of His death and resurrection. It is a longstanding tradition in the Church that a Priest may be requested to offer a Mass for a spe-cific intention, even when one cannot be physically present at the Mass.”

So I now understand that the Mass intention is for the Priest as he says Mass and it is a prayer of intercession. But I wondered about my role as a member of the congregation. So I asked Father Stephen. He explained that all Masses are for everyone, living and deceased, and each member of the congregation should set their own intentions for the Mass. There are times throughout the Mass when we are called to prayers of petition and of intercession.

This prompted me to explore the difference between the two. According to YOUCAT we should petition God because “God, who knows us through and through, knows what we need. Nevertheless, God wants us to ask...even struggle with him in prayer”. Prayers of intercession are prayers of petition we say not for ourselves, but on behalf of others.

In conclusion, I plan to set my own intentions before Mass starts, and at times throughout, pray my own prayers of petition and intercession. I also plan to have Masses said for deceased members of my family at special times of year like their birthdays and anniversary out of reverence to them and their faith. I have learned that this is a practice the Priests in most parishes do often and may be scheduled by contacting the parish office. It does not require a stipend, but a free will dona-tion of $10 is suggested. While it is common for Mass intentions to be for a deceased person, it does not have to be. It can also be for the living.

Thank you for sharing your gifts. – Chris Kuhlemeyer

Pizza Ranch Fundraiser—Thank You! Thank you to everyone who supported St. Gregory Barbarigo School via the Pizza Ranch fundraiser in early December. Due to your generosity we were able to raise over $800.00 for our school as well as support our local Pizza Ranch. Thank you!

Thank you - PTO Football Raffle The 2020 PTO Football Raffle is completed and in the books. Once again, thanks to Sarah & JR Kurz who have been chair-ing this PTO fundraiser for many years (11!). This year we sold close to $24,000 worth of tickets which gave us a profit over $15,000! This is a huge fundraiser for PTO and helps to fund many items/upgrades for our school that are not a part of our annual school budget. Thank you Kurz family for your efforts and sacrifice. Thanks to ALL of you, our parishioners and community members, who purchased tickets. Without your participation, these profits would not be possible.
