February 2017

To: Carroll County Chapter American Wine Society From: Ron Riley, Chapter Chair

Hi Everyone:

It's been relatively benign Winter, but as we know, February can always be tricky-especially if you believe that rarely accurate Marmot Meteorologist Punxsutawney Philwho predicted Winter weather when he saw his 2017 Shadow. If we're lucky perhapswe'll make it through this month's tasting without storm problems.

The date is Sunday February 19th, with the usual 2PM (or so) start time. Again, as inprevious years, we'll be meeting at the historic country home of George and JackieGrillon. Presiding as wine host is our UK brother “Sir” Robert Horrocks, who will talk usthrough select Oregon State Red and Whites -“Everything BUT Pinot Noir” is his theme.

Jackie prefers email RSVP, Please respond by Thursday February 16th – “the sooner the better” Our thanks to Eileen and Richard Sien for hosting in January at their Eldersburg home. Itwas a great tasting with a solid laid-back and knowledgeable presentation by Eileen'sbrother in law Michael who sorted out Pinot Grigios, Syrahs and Nebbiolos. We also did abit of reminiscing about of the start-up of CCAWS in the 1980s with special nods to longtime members who were present: Chapter founders Jack and Emily Johnson, JohnLandon, Richard and Carmen, Nancy Slick, the Eisbergs and Dean and Becky Wilson

March - 2017

Carroll County (MD) Chapter American Wine Society

Hi Everyone,

It seems we have turned the 2017 pages pretty rapidly so far this year. After a very untypical February we're now into March with Daylight Saving Time coming

up on the 12th, Saint Patrick’s Day on the 17th and Spring's official arrival the day after our Sunday March 19th tasting.

Also, another milestone, as the long time tradition of Johnston's hosting this

tasting ends due to Jack and Emily's impending sale and move. We thank you both for years of great wines and good times, but happy to know you will be able

to continue as members sharing your knowledge and spirit with CCAWS.

Also, kudos to Bill and Michelle Sadler for stepping up to fill the date along with

Nancy Slick presenting. The format: – TAH-DAH! - “Do You Know Your Wine ABC's” She's is not planning doing a wine run on all 26 letters of the alphabet,

(Awww, come-on Nan!) but she will use at least 8, beginning, of course' with “A”

Please RSVP by Thursday March 16th preferably email to Bill. however, bill said if you feel the need for human contact you can call.

Thank you, Jackie & George, for hosting a wonderful tasting on the 19th which

turned out to be an unusually Sunny and relatively mild February day. Everyone had a chance to sit outdoors and sip as Dean Wilson, who brought his Drone

along, treated us to awesome live aerial views of Grillions' home and acreage. Of course, Robert Horrock’s presentational romp through Oregon gave us great

insights into some wonderful wines beyond their highly popular Pinot Noir

April - 2017

To: CCAWS MEMBERS From: Ron Riley, Chair,

Carroll County (MD) Chapter American Wine Society

Hi Everyone,

Weatherwise it was a roller coaster February – warmest since 1870 – March was much cooler, which unfortunately stunted many of the emerging plants and

blossoms – including Cherry Blossoms which opened 10 to 12 days late in DC.

Now into April, we’re in high anticipation of CCAWS’s Extravagancia Españolas. At 2PM Sunday April 9th we will join hosts John & Ann Carr, and their guest

presenter Spanish Wine Specialist Marie Stevens from Palm Bay Importers for an

unprecedented Vertical Tasting of Faustino Gran Reserva Rioja. Oldest wine to taste-1964. Because of limited space we reached capacity fast! So, with others

waiting, if you must cancel be sure to contact the Carrs. Also, when making your “dish to share, please try to make something Spanish or of Spanish influence to

complement the Riojas”.

Thanks so much to the Sadlers for March! The ‘snow scare’ of the 18th and 19th didn’t live up to the advertised hype and we spent a fine afternoon with Bill,

Michelle and Madison at their Gamber farm. Also, cheers to Nancy Slick for a fine presentation of mainly low to moderately priced White Wines from the US and EU.

BTW we won’t see Nan at the April event as she’ll be attending the Vinitaly 2017 Wine Fair in Verona IT. Tough job but somebody has to do it, as they say.

Hi Everyone,First some great “Headline News” from Kristen Lindelow, VP of Scholarships at the American Wine Society Educational Foundation (AWSEF) advising us that the Board of Trustees has awarded a $3500 scholarship funded by CCAWS -In Honor of Becky and Dean Wilson - to Jaclyn Fiola who is pursuing her PhD at Ohio State University. Her current and future research involves the environmental and economic sustainability of vineyards in the U.S. with a long list of goals including the relationship between soils and grapes with the overall goal of increasing cold hardiness while producing high quality grapes with less environmental impacts.quoting Becky and Dean “we are both honored to have helped our chapter to provide this scholarship. But we didn’t didn’t do it alone. Thanks also goes to all our contributing members! Ditto on that folks!! Our next tasting will be on Father’s Day, June 18th (kinda) promptly at 2PM with the annual AWS NATIONAL TASTING PROJECT (NTP). To: CCAWS Members From: Ron Riley, Chapter Chair Hi Everyone Hope you're enjoying your Summer! Although we're not having a tasting this month, I did want to get out a few words and then will follow up with a complete September Newsletter after the first of the month. -First we want to say "thanks so much" to George and Jackie Grillon for hosting their annual CCAWS Cookout and Pool Party at their historic home and acreage. Although Linda and I were unable to make it, Treasurer for Life John Landon reported that "everyone behaved" and a good time was had by all with plenty of burgers, dogs and wine and goodies to go around. - As mentioned in the July letter, Jerry and Dorothy Hampton are unable to host the August 20th date due to vacation conflicts but have jumped in to fill the September date which Haslauers are unable to host this year. - By way the Hampton's holiday is a lengthy stay in Sonoma wine country and Jerry tells me that his Eldersburg tasting on September 17th will focus on the Red & White wines of that legendary California county, which boasts 425 wineries! I wonder how many they will visit! "The Diverse Wines of Sonoma" is the theme and it Sounds like a winner!!! Put it on your calendar for next month!! Finally, here's mail from Corynne regarding a Carroll Arts Center wine/film event in Westminster on Friday September 15th which you may enjoy attending. That's it for now! Cheers!! Ron

This is release from Facebook FYI

The Judgement of Paris probably needs no explanation for my wine loving friends, but to jog your memory this Wiki link should remind you of the details of this momentous occasion in oenology history.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judgment_of_Paris_(wine) On Friday September 15th, the eve of the 2017 MD Wine Festival, Flicc will present "Bottle Shock", a film that dramatizes the 1976 event that "shocked" the wine world order. Current available vintages of two of the wines central to the JOP will be available, and a special live Skype introduction from the vineyards of California will precede the screening. Sponsor and 30 year veteran of the wine industry, Bernie Vogel, will MC the film and post Q&A session. A special pre-show tasting of the wines has sold out so please purchase your main event tickets early. Time to hit to road to the North Carroll countryside home of Charlie and Roseanne Hedges for their October “gala”. And for the 3rd year, Mike, Meggan, Chris and Tracy are the wine presenters. It’ll be another good one I’m sure. No food pairings this year, but as I write this Mike and Meggan are busily making some great final wine selections for “A Spice Odyssey-The Aromatics of Cabs and Syrah”

Date is Sunday October 15th 2PM Seating will be limited with members having first choice. Guests will be considered if there is remaining space. Although we’re not expecting this to be an expensive tasting we want to give everyone a heads up that the price might exceed $25 per person.

Please RSVP by October 12th and only to their email address As always, the earlier the better and please don’t forget to bring an appetizer/entree or dessert for the table to share . Hope you can make it!

Thanks to Jerry and Dorothy Hampton who “knocked it out of the Ballpark” with a winetrip through Sonoma as they hosted our October wine tasting. Spending their vacationsin Sonoma over the past 3 years gave them a wonderful insider look at the diversity ofthe region which they shared with us. The wine was great and the voting was close:
