CHS Money Management Classes Team Up With Elementary Students

Capital High School’s Money Management classes, under the direction of Ms. Hailey Selch and Mr. Kent Haab, have been working on learning how to balance checking accounts. In addition to writing checks and reconciling bank statements, students each “adopted” a kindergartener from Jim Darcy, Ray Bjork, and Smith schools and made a piggy bank for each of them to teach the concept of saving money.

Students decorated piggy banks, bags, wrote introductory letters, and started the savings for the elementary students by contributing a few cents to each bank. The students really stepped it up and created amazing gifts to present to the kindergar-ten classes.

In one particular instance, senior Kinzie Quintana took on the mission of making a special piggy for a blind student. Knowing the student wouldn’t be able to see the decorations or read her handwritten letter, Kinzie reached out to Beth Heiser, Cap-ital’s specialist of working with blind and deaf students, who helped create a spe-cial braille note and a piggy bank with various textures so the student could feel the bank. Braille lettering was also added directly to the piggy bank. Ms. Heiser then offered to deliver the bank to the student and ensure it was received since the student was out on medical leave.

We will hold a community event on Thurs-day, Jan. 31. The event is scheduled to be held at Carroll College at 7:00 pm A reminder as well as more details will be distributed to parents/guardians as this date approaches.
