Nobles, Ladies and Family of El Jebel Shrine:
December is a month filled with joy and excitement.
The many Holiday gatherings come to mind and the clo-
sure that the year is ending is always present. Lady Lisa
and I were on the go nonstop all month with El Jebel hav-
ing fun and fellowship. The RV Roamers comingled
many units together and had a great Christmas party at
Mt. Vernon. A great time was had by all without excep-
tion. El Jebel’s participation is up and the sky is the limit!
For the first time since moving in “The Offices of El
Jebel Shrine” were holiday decorated. What a great job
done by the decorating team! If you would like to help
out next year, contact Ken Jones to get involved.
The annual Children’s Christmas party at Highlands
Lodge was very well attended. Assistant Rabban Ron and
his lady Robyn had a team of dedicated holiday helpers in
place that did not disappoint! Santa and his Elves made
everyone big or small smile with excitement! Thanks to
all, you did a great job!
The El Jebel Shrine annual elections were held and the
2020 officers were elected. Potentate- Joe (Tater Tot)
Kent, Chief Rabban- Ron (Mashed Taters) Williamson,
Assistant Rabban- Ken (I’ll see what I can do) Jones,
High Priest and Prophet- Grady (Well OK then) Carter,
Oriental Guide- Jim (If you need me then I’m there) Daw-
kins, Treasurer- P.P. Jim (Checks and Balances*) Stewart
and Recorder- Jay (You got it) Bobick. You have a team
in place that will offer clarity for all, where questions are
always welcomed and answers are always found. The ap-
pointed officers will be announced at the stated meeting.
Moving into January you have the Presidents and Secre-
tary’s meeting on the 11th. This meeting outlines a lot of
next year’s planning and is considered very important.
The 2020 “Potentate’s Trip” presentation is also sched-
uled to follow later on this day. The 13th will be the In-
stallation of officers and stated meeting. National Western
Stock Show “Shriners” night is on the 17th and tickets are
still available at the office call 303-455-3470 for more
information.
The Panorama Management Company is doing a great
job for us managing our building. We now have an Oper-
ations Summary including Banking, Financial Statements,
Accounts Receivable Activity and Accounts Payable Ac-
tivity report. Clarity and accountability is a very wel-
comed addition to El Jebel Shrine.
The Building Trustees did a great job for us on this en-
deavor. Many hands have made for great work here!
1st Lady Lisa and I have enjoyed this year with all of
you. You participated with us and showed us support sec-
ond to none. Hopefully you feel more in tune with El Jeb-
el (as this was our intent). Remember “Memories remind
us that nothing lasts forever. Time is precious and should
not be wasted. Enjoy life and remember, don’t count the
days, make the days count.” Amen

THE NEW YEAR IS HERE
Welcome Nobles and families to the 2020 El Jebel Shrine! It
is a new year, new leadership, and a new outlook for your El
Jebel under the leadership of Illustrious Potentate Elect Joe
Kent. We had a great, no a magnificent 2019 with our immedi-
ate Illustrious Past Potentate Bobby Marner leading a multitude
of accomplishments that improved our Temple and our mem-
bership. Now, soon to be Illustrious Joe has paved the way for
and set our sights to not only continuing but raising the bar for a
great El Jebel 2020. This is our 2020 leadership elected and
appointed:
The above elections and appointments were accomplished at
our Monday, 9 December Stated Meeting that began at 6
o’clock with a lasagna dinner. Sixty-five Nobles were there
with ladies and family members. Potentate Bobby Marner
opened the evening with a welcome to all and asked our Chap-
lain Jim Oliver to give an opening prayer. After dinner, Joe
Kent introduced our dignitaries attending beginning with the
Illustrious Past Potentates; Dick Williams, Amer Plaisted, Jim
Fitzpatrick, Ron Cosens, Tony Dattilo, Dennis Proctor, Matt
Raia and Rich Silver. Also there were; Past Imperial Chaplain
Greg Rindone, Denver Scottish Rite Secretary Matt Raia, York
Rite Bodies Treasurer Steve Hubbard, Tom Leahy from India
Temple and one of our new members Lee M. (Hoss) Monse-
broten.
Illustrious Sir Bobby asked our Chaplain Jim Oliver to come
forward for our annual “In Challa.” This Ceremony is the time
we have a Memorial Service to Honor our deceased Nobility.
Thirty-nine names were read and prayers said for them and
their families. It is always proper and needed to keep the mem-
ories of our departed brethren ever in our hearts as, with all, a
time will come for us to join them.
After dinner, the ladies adjourned to their meeting that was
highlighted by a “Sock Exchange.” Each lady
brought a pair of socks filled with a wide variety of goodies
that were exchanged with all attending. The ladies had a fun
time and all went home with their goodies. The formal part of
the evening for the nobles opened at 7:45 pm in due form pre-
sided by our Potentate. Noble Ed Richards, Legion of Honor
Commander, led in our Pledge of Allegiance followed by the
Chanters singing the National Anthem. Chaplain Jim Oliver
gave the invocation.
The Treasurer’s Report was given by Joe Kent, Chief Rab-
ban, who also gave a brief comment concerning the 2020
Budget that will be presented for approval at the 13 January
2020 Annual Meeting. The Potentate then called Illustrious
Tony Dattilo to conduct the 2020 Officers’ Election. Before
the election, Tony thanked Potentate Bobby for all that he had
accomplished in 2019 and also thanked all who attended the
Children’s Christmas Party where he again represented Santa
Claus. The election process progressed without any concerns
electing those officers listed above. The newly elected Poten-
tate then nominated and those elected for Imperial Representa-
tives and CSSA Representatives were Joe Kent, Ron William-
son and Ken Jones.
At this point, while there was no old business, there were two
items that required Noble approval. They were the 2020 Poten-
tate’s Jamaica Trip and the 2020 Sportsmen’s Raffle that will
be held on 3 October 2020 at Highlands Lodge. Both items
were heartedly approved without discussion.
Our new Potentate Elect said that it was an absolute pleasure
serving as Chief Rabban and thanked the Potentate for a great
team effort. He commended the Divan for their continued ef-
forts to make our Temple great. Joe said we are heading to a
bright future and wants all nobles to get active and asked all to
bring in new members. Then, our Potentate Elect thanked
again all Nobles and their families.
In closing, the Potentate said it was a fast year and the in-
volvement of all was fantastic. It was a real team effort. There
are a few clouds out there but, we will prevail. Bobby then
thanked his Chief Aide Steve Hubbard and thanked the Cabiri,
Past Potentates for their guidance throughout the year. He stat-
ed that the best was being out there and having fun. Then he
thanked Wayne Livermore for making the long journey from
Kansas to be with us for the elections and celebrations. With
that Illustrious Bobby closed his final meeting at 8:50 pm,
peace and harmony, in deed, prevailing.

TO: TEMPLE DIVAN LEADERS
You may have recently received an email communica-
tion from Masonic Medical Research Institute (“MMRI”).
As Shrine Masons, we are aware of and proud of the
charitable work performed by Grand Lodges and appen-
dant bodies. As related to research, Masonic organiza-
tions also make tremendous contributions in that area as
well, specifically including the Knights Templar Eye
Foundation, Inc.
As part owner of Shriners Hospitals for Children, you
should know that Shriners research has already had a tre-
mendous impact on the provision of care throughout the
world. That research footprint continues to expand both
in terms of breadth and depth of unique, cutting edge re-
search projects.
Shriners International is currently involved in an un-
precedented number of collaborative partnerships with
Grand Lodges and appendant bodies. We recognize that
more can be done by working cooperatively, than through
more limited unilateral efforts. While we are pleased that
the Masonic MMRI, the Knights Templar Eye Founda-
tion, and other Masonic groups are involved in funding
research, Shrine temples should be extraordinarily proud
to fund Shriners Hospitals for Children research projects
exclusively.
General Order No. 1, Series of 2019-2020, states on pag-
es 42 and 43:
“2. Fundraising for Charitable Purposes:
No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club,
unit,
organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant
corporations shall engage in any charitable fun
raising activity other than for Shriners Hospitals
for Children.”
While temples are generally not able to solicit charitable
gifts with restricted purposes, Shrine temples, clubs and
units are able to do so with regard to funds designated for
research. See Special Purpose Funds for Research on
page 46 of General Order No. 1. Therefore, Shrine or-
ganizations should be particularly proud of, and encour-
aged to support, their own charitable research efforts.
Unfortunately, it has come to our attention that, from
time to time, Shrine entities are making charitable contri-
butions to organizations other than Shriners Hospitals for
Children. Due to the tremendous impact our charity con-
tinues to have, it is difficult to understand why Shrine
organizations would choose to support a charity other
than our own, particularly when doing so violates Gen-
eral Order No. 1 and our covenant with one another to
support Shriners Hospitals for Children. See Shriners
Creed, 210.2 of the 2019 bylaws of Shriners Internation-
al. Please understand that this letter is not sent in opposi-
tion to the research efforts of MMRI, Knights Templar,
or any other Masonic organization. Rather, it is intended
to remind and encourage Shrine temples to support solely
the research efforts of the “World’s Greatest Philanthro-
py,” Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Fraternal Communications boardroom at Shriners Vil-
lage.

Tri-County: At our November meeting at Viva Mexico
in Montrose we had our election of officers for 2020. Our
President will be Scott Krebs, VP Fred Carson, Steve Isle
stepped down as Sec.- Treas. as he has a full load to carry
with all his other stuff going on so we elected Gary
Weiszbrod to the office and Sky Fairlamb is our Captain
for 2020. Fred Carson also won the 50/50 cash prize
which he is going to invest in food futures.
We will be dark in Dec. as there is lots going on with
lodges and holidays and all. We meet again Jan. 25th at
Daveto's at 1pm in beautiful downtown Delta.
Hope y'all had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Western Colorado Shrine Club had their annual Christ-
mas party at Grand Vista Hotel Saturday Dec. 14th and
Michael Briscoe and his lady Janine did another great job
lining this up and Michael doing the MC work. It was a
great meal and then entertained by a 6th grade choir
group to top it all off.
Western Colorado Shrine club
By Steve Thomas
Western Colorado Shrine Club's December meeting was
called to order by President Gary Weiszbrod at 11:45am.
Blessing by Roger Phillips and Pledge was led by Bill
Hirt. Minutes were approved and mailed.
Secretary Andrew BE had questions about turning in
points for things other than meetings. Discussion fol-
lowed and it was noted that El Jebel, a few years ago had
the unit members elect a points chairman, each appointed
Chairman (as Parade, Christmas party, activities director
Etc.) register with El Jebel points chairman and turn in
their points earned.
Andrew would also like to have your e-mail address so
he can maybe save the club a little on mailing and it is
much faster than snail-mail.
Yearly dues are now to be paid $20.00 for WCSC.
Petitions: I understand we may have at least one and
maybe 2 petitions. I have a Mason in Montrose who has
asked for one but then he has come down sick. New fees
from El Jebel are:
New Shriner- $400.00 first years dues, Initiation, new
Fez and WCSC dinner for 2 and $350.00 for
a gently used preowned Fez.
They have used Fez cases for $20.00, new ones for
$30.00 and Fez stiffeners for $6.00 El Jebel yearly dues
are $135.00
Old business: Michael Briscoe has all under control for
our annual Christmas Party and is working on the Instal-
lation Party in Feb.
Hospital Coordinator: Gary Brown has some can tabs
he'd like to get to Salt Lake Hospital if anyone wants to
go and see the hospital.
Ceremonial Team are working hard for the Installation
and induction of new Shriners Feb. 15th
Sickness and Distress: We've had the Black Camel
come around again. WB Ron "Sparky" O'Hair has passed.
He was past president of the Clowns, very active until his
health started going down and will be missed by all.
Sparky helped me a lot all though my WCSC clown expe-
rience. Ron was Past Master of Gunnison Masonic Lodge
he was also Western Colorado Shriner of the Year in
2004.
He was a state electrical inspector and had a electrical
business of his own at one time. Ron was an Air Force
veteran, enlisting in 1956.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Doni and his family.
Clowns: entertained a lot of Scottish Rite Kids with
Santa in Grand Junction and Montrose.
Scooters: plan a party in January. Contact Linn Arm-
strong for details.

The V.I.P.’s had a great December Meeting / Social at
Mickey’s Steakhouse. The holiday spirit was alive and
well. Phil Covarrubias and Lady Gloria did a fantastic job
organizing the team for the day’s events.
Wayne Covert along with Lady Vivian graced us with
their attendance. In case you didn’t know Wayne has been
laid up for quite a while with leg surgeries (plural).
On January 11th El Jebel will have its annual President’s
and Secretary’s meeting. This meeting outlines the 2020
year’s Parades and protocols. Stay tuned for all the up-
dates!
The annual Installation of officers meeting is on January
13th. You should plan on attending and supporting the
new 2020 El Jebel Shrine Divan.
Membership is the key so remember to be on the
“lookout” for new members! What qualifies? You have to
be: Light hearted, Fun loving, Motivated, Auto Enthusi-
asts!

Pipe Band
By Kent Burns
The holidays are over. I hope everyone had the best of
the holiday season. Now we get to settle down to the
long, cold, dark days of winter. Brrrrrr!
For the Pipe Band thus starts the season of road trips,
mostly to or through the mountains. The second Saturday
in January we will be “appearing” with the cadets from
the Air Force Academy at the annual Winterskól celebra-
tion in Aspen. This is one of our most looked-forward-to
performances every year. Now that Bill Smith is no long-
er the director of the Drum and Bugle Corps down south
of us we have only one chance to play with the cadets as
Red, Plaid, and Blue – and this is it. (When Bill was
around we had ample opportunities to perform and we
took advantage of everyone we could.) Then in February
we will be heading to Cheyenne for a table lodge, to
Snowmass for Mardi Gras, and to Grand Junction to make
sure the officers of the Western Slope Shrine Club are
installed with proper ceremony. (More about these expe-
ditions right here in next month’s installment of the Fez.)
Ceremony and tradition are important to all organiza-
tions, especially these of ours. While we may not
“officially” call some things “protocol,” nonetheless that
is what we follow. Generally. The Pipe Band broke said
protocol this last month and had our annual Christmas
party at the home of one of our members. Of course, it
was not the usual home with living room, dining room,
and kitchen. Rather it is the domicile of Cindy and John
Harris and is somewhat reminiscent of something one
would expect in Casablanca. First of all it faces Wash-
ington Park. And you expect Allan Quartermain to come
strolling through, complete with jodhpurs, safari hat, and
pipe. It is a virtual forest of palms and ferns and plants all
from the savannah and/or jungle. The floors are covered
with animal skins of all kinds and the expected African
art is everywhere. (Cindy’s father was a missionary in
Africa for many years and provided them with a few
[wink, wink] objets d’arts over the years.) And to com-
plete the illusion, you will occasionally hear the screech
of a bird – they have a wonderful pet cockatoo named
Tattoo who thinks the sun rises and sets on John. She is a
beautiful bird, albeit a bit of a recluse when confronted
with a whole bunch of strangers! So the Harris’s played
host and hostess for our annual mistletoe meal which was
followed by the usual toasting line. But instead of imbib-
ing and retiring, the Band had another “first” with a white
elephant gift exchange, much to the delight of all. The
whole thing was such a success that this may become our
new “normal” for a few years to come. Or at least one
more time next year.
If anyone is interested in all this fun, we are looking for
a few good men. So come on down almost any Thursday
evening at the Shrine at 1900 (or 7:00pm for the uninitiat-
ed) for the fun!

Caring Ladies
By Jeanne Thompson
The Caring Ladies of El Jebel held their social-only
meeting at the Chalet Restaurant on December 11. We
were graced by the presence of El Jebel Chaplain Jim
Oliver and Most Illustrious Grand Commander John
Zeaphey and his lady Margaret. Since there was no busi-
ness conducted, the time was spent in conversation,
laughter, and enjoying good food.
We are the widows of Shriners and Blue Lodge Masons
who meet the second Wednesday of each month for ca-
maraderie and good times. Our meetings are open to all
widows of Free Masons and we encourage these ladies to
join us. If you desire to come, please call Kay Bell at
303-430-9001 for a reservation, or just come on about
11:30 am and pull up a chair. We meet at the Chalet
Restaurant, 7340 West 38th Avenue, Wheat
Ridge. Dress is casual. Order from the menu for good
food and excellent service, share your news and observa-
tions with us. There is a lot of laughter and good times,
so please join us.
Sandblasters of El Jebel
by Matthew Madrid
The Sandblasters held their Annual Meeting on No-
vember 27th, 2019 at the Golden Corral Restaurant and
10 members and guest Grady Carter were in attendance.
Discussions for the yearly winter trip continued. The
winter trip is still planned for February 19th thru Febru-
ary 26th at the San Marcos Golf Club in Chandler, Ari-
zona. The winter trip has always been a nice get-away
when the weather in Colorado is cold and miserable.
There is still space available for any Sandblasters, their
family, or guests. If you have interest in the trip please
contact President elect Larry Bangert (303-947-9600) or
Vice President elect Matthew Madrid (915-760-7446)
for more information.
In regards to health please keep our brother Claude
Akridge’s wife Shirley in your thoughts. Shirley passed
away earlier this month and prayers during this difficult
time for Claude and his family are most appreciated.
The Sandblasters meet on the last Wednesday of each
month at the Golden Corral at 11:30 AM on West Hamp-
den Ave. (River Point shopping complex). If you have
any interest in golfing or joining our group, please come
visit us. Guests are always welcome.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!
Hope all of you enjoyed the holidays with family and
friends and are now ready to begin a New Year!
In December, lots of holiday parties filled the month
and kept us busy; many people out of town enjoying a
cruise or just visiting relatives for the holidays.
This month, El Mejdel Temple celebrates its birthday
with a luncheon, Unit performances and a Ceremonial.
We always welcome new members and are looking for-
ward to our candidate’s initiation.
We do have some important events coming up the first
part of this year. At our February Session, a Memorial

December 2019 meeting of the December 2019
Northeast Colorado S. C. Meeting of Colorado Outpost #1
NORTHEAST Colorado Shrine Club
by Jerry Wardrip, Secretary
We started our meeting with a prayer and the Pledge, and then
moved on to report on some of the community projects we are
working on with our other Masonic bodies. We had our first
weekend of assisting Santa with the workshop and pictures at
Home Depot on the 7th and 8th. We had about “
one hundred and fifty kids participate building some Christmas
toys and getting a picture with Santa. We will do it again on
the 14th and 15th. It only takes up 4 or 5 hours and is a lot of
fun helping kids build simple little toys. We had a good turnout
at the Sterling Parade of Lights, we had about 20 men women
and children assist us with the float. We had riders and walkers
(we cannot throw candy from the float) handing out candy
along the parade route. We only go about 8 blocks all lined
with people and lots of kids. We made short work of about 200
lbs of candy.
We have more projects coming in the first months of 2020,
such as the Burns Night in January and Sweetheart dinner and
gathering in February and our big Chili Cook-off in March. We
have a lot of projects in the works and it takes all of our Mason-
ic Brothers help to pull them off, so out here in Northeast Colo-
rado Masonry is a multi body cooperation to get things done.
We will also be doing some degree work as we have some
Brothers ready to move on gathering more light.
As you can see Masonry is alive and well out here in North-
east Colorado. You are welcome to meet with us at 6:00 AM
and have a hearty breakfast the 2nd Monday of each month at
the Overland Trail Café at the Atwood interchange on I 76 and
State highway 63.

OPTARS
By J & J Taylor
On Tuesday, December 3, 2019, the Optars did not
hold their annual Christmas dinner at the Homestead
Grille in Lakewood. Instead, the Optars accepted the RV
Roamers invitation to enjoy the Brunch at Mt. Vernon
Canyon Club on Sunday, December 1.
There were eight Members present. There was no Optars
business.
Divan – With six Divan members present, Joe Kent
reported the 2020 Potentate’s trip will be to Jamaica on
April 4-11 and Ron Williamson talked about IHOP Pan-
cake Day on February 25th, 2020.
The Computer Club and Optars Units took and print-
ed pictures at the Children’s Christmas Party on Decem-
ber 7. We had five people and the Computer Club equip-
ment. $54.00 has been deposited in each club’s accounts.
Optars will be taking pictures of the Divan on January
13th before the dinner and installation of new officers.
We will be using a backdrop and Ed Hamm will be using
his camera.
The next Optars meeting will be held on January 7th,
starting at 5:30 at the Citron. The program around 7:00
at the Shrine, will be looking at making a book cover or
some kind of advertising brochure for the zoo, restaurant,
wildlife magazine, etc. Come and join us! Guests are
always welcome.

For RV Roamers
by J. & J. Taylor
Wow! 2019 sure flew by fast! We hope you have had a
good healthy one, and will have a healthy 2020. Other
than a few blips along the way, ours turned out pretty
good!
On December 1st, Roamers’ “Inning” met at Mt.
Vernon; Talkingtons were the “hosts”. They invited other
units and “dignitaries” (Bobby and his bunch) to join
them in a most delicious brunch. There were 54 Shriners
and their guests; they met upstairs for the meal and got to
see new beautiful and interesting views of the hills, val-
leys and city.
President Jim first announced that Judy was in the
hospital with a kidney problem (now recovering) then
called the meeting to order after they were done grazing
and eating the brunch. Introductions of the Past Poten-
tates, Tony Dattilo and Larry Clark, were made, along
with Ill Sir Bobby Marner and one Roamers Past Presi-
dent, Kent Eckley. The minutes were approved as pub-
lished via email. Richard (thanks, Heidi!) gave a Treasur-
er’s report.
On the “Not Well” list, are Marylyn Hepp, Judy
Taylor and Nicole Potter. Also, the Kohlweys’ daughter
was in the hospital, and neither Dave nor Arlene felt well
enough to attend the Roamer’s “Inning”.
Old Business – Dues are due ($25)
New Business – Next meeting, Jan 19 – Malone’s
– Tony & Ellen Dattilo will be our hosts. The 2020 ros-
ters for Roamers were handed out.
Future Events – May 17 – Candlelight Dinner
Playhouse – “Curtains” – Jim is taking names anytime up
to April 15, 2020. June 26, 27 – Chatfield – Sign up for
loop D Starting 12/25 or 26.
Introduction of Guests – Because we had a total
of 54 people attend our Brunch and Meeting, Jim elected
to have each table’s diners stand up separately and intro-
duce themselves.
Good of the Order – Drive safely going home.
Divan Rep – Ron Williamson
12/7 – Children’s Christmas Party.
12/ 9 – El Jebel Elections.
III Sir Bobby Marner – A wonderful year with
great activities. He totally enjoyed his term as Potentate.
Thanks to all who joined the Roamers this year
for a fun and memorable occasion. You’re welcome to
join us in 2020 on December 6th – we hope to be here
again at Mt. Vernon!
DUNE BUGGY BLAST
By Don Weiser
December has come and gone, and the New Year has started.
Here’s hoping that you have survived the holidays and are
ready to begin a new year with El Jebel Shrine and your
Dune Buggy Patrol.
Since it’s winter, and we haven’t any parades for a while, I
suspect that all our buggy’s are in hibernation for the winter.
Hopefully we are resting up and thinking about the improve-
ments we will make to our beloved rides before next parade
season. I’m also hoping that we are giving serious thought to
doing some traveling in 2020.
Imperial session is in July, in Kansas City. Since its so close,
it would be a shame to not have a good representation for
competition from the Dune Buggy’s. Competition is on Sat-
urday, July 4th, at Arrowhead Stadium. CSSA is in Spring-
field, Mo., from September 2nd to 5th. It would be wonder-
ful to have our Dune Buggy’s well represented in competi-
tion also. If you haven’t been to CSSA, it’s a great time, with
lots of Shrine fellowship. Please think about these events,
and let Don Weiser know so he can do the planning for hous-
ing.

Elect
Nobles:
I am the Chief Rabban
elect for the year 2020.
I have been a Shriner for
27 years and I am extremely
proud of the work we do as
Shriners in our Hospitals.
My goal for the coming years is to share the amazing life-
changing work we do as Shriners and encourage others to
join us.
My wife, Robyn, and I have been married for 51 years.
We have 2 children. Our daughter Michele and her hus-
band Phil have 2 children Sydney and Austin and our son
Bryan and his wife Colleen have 1 child Finley. When
we are not busy with Shrine activities we are busy going
to hockey games, soccer games or school activities.
When I joined the Shrine, I wanted to be involved in the
Jeep Patrol. Since then we have been in the Shabab Unit,
the Dune Buggy Patrol, Directors Staff and both Robyn
and I are involved with the Medical Staff. We enjoy
working with and visiting with all the units.
I retired from Xcel Energy after 38 years in the power
plants and retired as Maintenance Unit Manager at Chero-
kee Power Plant in Denver.
As we leave behind the old year and welcome in the
new, we would like to wish everyone a Wonderful Holi-
day and a Happy New Year.

Illustrious Sir Tony Dattilo
Christmas Eve was quiet at our home. I watched
Ralphie in "A Christmas Story" for the umpteenth time,
now a personal tradition not to be missed.
This movie best recalls with vivid accuracy, many of my
childhood memories of the 40's - almost like someone
closely followed our family and recorded our lives as the
script for the movie.
I remember well, the cold winters of Ohio that brought
its long standing ice and snow with temperatures that
chilled to the bone despite the best efforts of our furnace
that belched black smoke from our attempts to keep its
hungry maw filled with coal.
My "job" was to transfer the coal when the "Coal Man"
dumped a new load of coal at the street side curb. I
moved the black rocks of coal, shovel by shovel from the
curbside through the open window of the basement coal
bin. Each day, the same coal shovel was used to remove
the burnt coal ashes and "clinkers" from the furnace until
the wooden bushel baskets in the basement were filled and
then carried them up the stairs to be placed back at
curbside in time for the "Ash Man" to collect the ashes
and leave the "empties" for refilling for his next collection
day. The dust, smoke and smell of those duties still linger
in my senses, refreshed by Ralphie's Dad in the movie's
"furnace" scene.
The relief of Christmas time off from school was wel-
comed as the bully from another school would not be pre-
sent along the way as I walked to our church each morn-
ing to serve as an altar boy for the daily 6 o'clock Mass, or
to sing in the boy's choir on Sunday mornings.
The "bully" was a 'big' seventh grade kid, completely
replicated in the movie with the taunting voice, coonskin
"Davey Crockett" hat, and braces on his yellow teeth. He
loved taking our lunch boxes and books away and throw-
ing them into the curbside openings of the sewer. My new
"Lone Ranger" lunch box met that fate, as did those that
belonged to my third grade friends.
My family in Ohio may remember the visits to the
downtown Lazarus "department store" that beautifully
decorated their windows with stunning displays of Christ-
mas lights and scenes of interest to all, always including
the Nativity setting which brought "life" and reverence to
the birth of Christ with no hesitation of violating the
"political correctness" nonsense of today.
Real Christmas trees were purchased from one of vari-
ous vendors, carried home on the roof of our car and deco-
rated by our family, each of us having specific tasks that
changed each year as we kids grew older and more
"responsible". It was exciting to graduate from carefully
placing tinsel on the tree to placing the fragile glass orna-
ments and later "bubbling" candlelight's on the tree.
My folks were adamantly against my wishes to augment
my Lone Ranger cap pistols with a new Red Ryder lever
action rifle that actually fired bb's with enough power to
"put your eye out".
That wish was satisfied by our next door neighbor who
convinced my folks that he would buy one and let me be
his "pigeon exterminator" of the dozens of birds that
sought his attic as their home. Our neighbor, Mr.
Ramey, was an assistant warden for the Ohio State Pris-
on, but to me he was Santa in disguise as I received his
gift of the Red Ryder special. Many pigeons were
"harvested" to be repurposed as "squab" - a table delica-
cy savored by those who enjoyed the esoteric fare of
baked or roasted "gutter chickens".
We didn't visit the "Store Santa's", but as young chil-
dren, we were treated to the appearance of "Santa" at our
family's gatherings, usually at my grandparents' home on
"Cleveland Avenue" (as consequentially referred to in
the movie), and portrayed by either my Dad, or my Uncle
Joe, in homemade costumes of a red bathrobe (courtesy
of my Aunt Rose), and white beards fashioned from cot-
ton.
For us kids, Santa was real but somehow "familiar", but
for the adults, 'Santa' was received by continuous shrieks
of hysterical laughter. We little ones just assumed that
laughter was happiness that was appropriately attributed
to Santa's presence. I can still hear my Aunt Rose's
laughter as she wiped the joyous tears from her eyes. My
serious grandmother was also caught up in the fun with
her rarely heard giggles.
The era depicted in the "Christmas Story" movie was in
great part, my childhood - the 1940's..so long ago, so
vivid in it's street scenes, vehicles and their problems, the
modes of dress, hair styles, and situations of life back
then. My recall of those days bring with them the shock-
ing reality that most everyone in our family who lived
those days are now gone from this life, but stay present
in the thoughts and hearts of we few who remain here to
carry on some of those traditions with much love and
reverence.

To begin with I feel deeply honored
and humbled by the Nobility for
electing me to the Divan for 2020. I
pledge to do my best for El Jebel
Shrine and all its Nobility. Lady
Kim and I look forward to interact-

braced us.
We encourage everyone to participate with Potentate

Attached is the year-end letter of Salt Lake City's
Chief of Medical Staff Dr Kristen Carroll. This report
is a few of our Hospital's 2019 activities.
Submitted by John Seebeck,
Board of Governors SLC
Happy Holidays 2019
and Joyous Wishes for the New Decade~202o!
Greetings SHC-SLC!
This year I had the pleasure of being invited to a number
of fund raising dinners, and our patient ambassador cele-
bration. When I talked with patients and their families,
the love and appreciation for our hospital and staff was
overwhelming. Over and over again, I heard how much
our families appreciate that they are ‘seen’ and ‘known’
by the staff. It means the world to them that folks know
their names and welcome them to our hospital at each
visit. Many families said it felt like a second home to
their kids; not scary, but nurturing. This is thanks to all
of you-every single one.
Surgery:
This year we did nearly 900 cases in the OR, for a total
of 1,985 procedures. Our staff did 61 Spine surgeries-
five for the Pasadena Unit for their Mexico population.
Pharmacy:
As noted above with the Epidural use by 131 patients (all
solutions mixed by our pharmacy staff), our Pharmacy
was busy this year! They verified over 19,500 orders
for accuracy, 620 done afterhours by our on call
pharmacist.
Wheelchair and Seating:
Matt Lowell and his group once again worked their mag-
ic this year. Nearly 230 donated wheelchairs were re-
furbished with over 1400 repairs and growth adjust-
ments- for a donation of nearly $420,000.
Research/Outcomes:
Speaking of Research, this year has been one of our most
productive ever. We hosted two medical students this
year-both funded- for summer research appointments.
Education:
SHC-SLC hosts a LOT of students, from many different
disciplines. This takes an incredible amount of coordina-
tion to stay safe and compliant for the patients we treat.
Outpatient Clinic, Radiology and Dietary Services:
This year our clinic saw over 9,300 clinic visits. We
saw over 1,700 new patients and helped our clubfoot
population have expanded services; We ran a total of
412 clinics, and booked over 760 surgeries.
Language Services/Care Coordination:
All these kids need coordination-and a place to stay! In
addition, as we have so many Spanish speaking patients,
interpretation is integral to our care. The Ronald
McDonald house provided housing for over 325 fami-
lies.
Therapy Services:
In addition to helping with the Halloween WC clinic-
therapy was busy on its own. They saw over 5,180 vis-
its combined. Speech saw 550 visits, Occupational
Therapy had 914 visits and Physical therapy had 3710
visits. Over 1,200 individual children were assisted in
all.
Revenue Cycle:
We will bill over $40 million in charges this year, with
the work done in the OR, clinic, anesthesia and pedi-
atrics all adding in. We are one of the top hospitals in
the system on return, at roughly 21%. Net Revenue
this year should be roughly $8 million which is 1 mil-
lion over our goal. The addition of PA and anesthesia
billing alone accounted got $350,000 of the net total.
This is very helpful in offsetting our draw on the endow-
ment.
