Facebook’s COO gives$ 31mn in charity
Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg has decided to donate $ 31 million in Facebook stock to charity.
Sanderberg (46) donated 290,000 shares of Facebook stock at "a market value of roughly $ 31 million" to various charities.
RBI infuses 1,000 crore of additional capital in
NHB
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has infused 1,000 crore of additional capital in National Housing Bank (NHB), a wholly owned entity of the central bank.
The infusion increases RBI’s shareholding in NHB from 450 crore to 1,450 crore.

The Hindu Prize for 2015 goes to Easterine Kire
Easterine Kire, poet, novelist and children’s writer from Nagaland, won The Hindu Prize, 2015, for her novel When the River Sleeps, a book about a lone hunter seeking a faraway river, to take from it a stone that will give him untold powers.
The award a citation and a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh was given away by author Alexander McCall Smith.

Taiwan’s independence-leaning opposition leader Tsai Ing-wen won a convincing victory in presidential election
Ms. Tsai said she would establish “consistent, predictable and sustainable” relations with China and not be provocative, to ensure the status quo.
Anuradha Roy wins DSC Prize
Author Anuradha Roy won the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature, 2016, for her novel sleeping on Jupiter, which deals with violence against women.
The award cash prize of $50,000 and a trophy.

Opening of AIIB part of global financial revamp
The China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) was formally opened for business.
It will soon incorporate the New Development Bank of the Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) grouping.
AIIB is likely to lend anywhere between $10-15 billion a year during the first five or six years of its existence.
Chinese Finance Minister Lou Jiwei—the first Chairman of its council—described the AIIB as a milestone in the reform of the global economic governance system.
SBI partners Snapdeal to offer loans
State Bank of India announced the introduction of SBI e-Smart SME to offer easy working capital to online e-commerce players.
It has initially tied up with e-commerce major Snapdeal to offer instant loans to its sellers.
SBI e-Smart SME will use data analytics gathered by Snapdeal to assess the seller’s credit worthiness, instead of traditional lending based on financial statements like balance sheet and income tax returns.

18th- 19th January Air India changes stand on 5/20 rule to allow
private airlines to fly abroad
Air India has dropped its resistance to abolish five years and 20 aircraft norms, also known as 5/20 rule, for Indian carriers to be able to fly abroad.
According to the ‘5/20 rule’, all airlines in India are permitted to fly abroad only if it has five years of domestic flying experience and at least 20 aircraft in its fleet.

Delhi Acers’ calculated gamble paid off as its British-import Rajiv Ouseph pulled off his ‘trump’ match against a desperate R.M.V. Gurusaidutt of Mumbai Rockets in the tie-decider of the Premier Badminton League final.
The 4-3 triumph for Delhi was worth Rs. 3 crore.

Tata Motors, India’s leading auto maker, has announced the appointment of Guenter Butschek, formerly with Airbus Group and Daimler, as its Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director.

20th January IMF cuts global growth forecast as China slows
India
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) cut its global growth forecasts for the third time in less than a year.
To back its forecasts, the IMF cited a sharp slowdown in China trade and weak commodity prices that are hammering Brazil and other emerging markets.
The Fund forecast that the world economy would grow at 3.4 per cent in 2016 and 3.6 per cent in 2017.
The IMF projected 7.3 per cent GDP growth for India in 2015-16 and 7.5 per cent in 2016-17.

Air India plans to induct 30 Airbus A320 aircraft
National carrier Air India is planning to induct 30 Airbus A320 aircraft, due to a robust growth in domestic air traffic, taking its total fleet size to around 150 planes in the next three financial years.
A substantial decline in jet fuel prices, which constitutes around 40 per cent of the total operational cost of an airline, allowed the domestic airlines to offer tickets at lower prices attracting air traffic.

Global tourists flying to India could be in for a surprise gift on arrival — a pre-
activated local SIM card.
The NDA government has set up a committee to finalise the plan to help tourists arriving on e-visas gain immediate access to mobile connectivity.

21st January EPFO bags e-Governance award
EPFO has been awarded the national award on e-Governance for the year 2015-16.
The award, which carries a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh along with a citation, will be presented to the organisation as well as to the individual members namely Central Provident Fund Commissioner K.K. Jalan, Regional PF Commissioners V. Ranganath, Ravi Kant and Pramod Singh, Deputy Directors K. Srinivas and Harsh Vardhan Kaushik and Assistant Director Ajay Kumar during the 19th national conference on e-Governance to be held on January 21-22, 2016 at Nagpur.

ISRO puts fifth GPS satellite in orbit
In yet another textbook launch, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched IRNSS-1E, the fifth of the seven-satellite Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) into space.
ISRO’s workhorse PSLV C-31 rocket lifted the 1,425 kg satellite from the second launchpad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre here at 9.31 a.m. and placed it in the intended orbit some 19 minutes later.
This is ISRO’s first launch for this year.

The Finance and Investment Panel of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) board has proposed an 8.95 per cent rate of return on retirement savings under its watch for 2015-16 as it is ‘feasible'
The proposed rate, the highest in five years, may face resistance from the Finance Ministry which is looking to cut interest rates on small savings instruments.
At present, EPFO gives 8.75 per cent as the rate of return.

Senior Indian Revenue Service official Atulesh Jindal has been appointed the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), India’s apex tax body.
International Solar Alliance set to be operational
in 6 months
An International Solar Alliance (ISA) is likely to be operational by the middle of 2016.
The initiative was announced by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, at the Conference of Parties in (COP 21) in Paris.
Mr. Modi and French President Francois Hollande would lay the foundation stone of the alliance at the National Institute of Solar Energy in Gurgaon, Haryana on January 25.
The international alliance is expected to have 121 members.
It comprises of countries with land between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer which typically have 300 or more days of sunshine a year.
One of the objectives of the alliance is to get $1 trillion investments in the solar sector worldwide by 2030.

Modi flags off hi-tech Varanasi-Delhi train
In his fifth visit to his constituency, Varanasi, after assuming power, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off a new train, Mahamana Express, connecting the city and New Delhi through Lucknow in 14 hours.
The train, named after Pundit Madan Mohan Malviya, the founder of Banaras Hindu University, is equipped with modern facilities such as bio-toilets in every coach and LED screens in air-conditioned compartments.
The train will run thrice a week.
