The SZABIST Model United Nations organization hosted the ZABMUN 7.5 conference on 14th March 2015 at the SZABIST Karachi campus. The two day conference aimed to inculcate within the students the ideals of diplomacy and public speaking.“Inculcating change, Fostering diplomacy” was adopted as the theme for this occasion. At ZABMUN 7.5, the delegates comprising of, freshmen year students were introduced to the world of public speaking and oration. They were given guidance in accordance to the Approach adopted by Aristotle while public speaking, which was “ethos, pathos and logos”.There were eight committees simulated at ZABMUN 7.5 which comprised of DISEC, SOCHUM, SPECPOL, ECOFIN, UNHRC, UNHCR, IAEA and PNA. Each committee aimed to raise awareness in the students regarding issues of global and national importance. On the first day of the conference the students learned how to debate in the UN environment which was simulated here for them. Emphasis was laid on approaching their problems diplomatically. There can be no better way to end the first day of a heated debate session then by relaxing around a fire on a cool night amongst friends, while being mesmerized by the musical talents of the student body. The BONFIRE was the perfect release of the diplomatic tension which had built up, while it served as an ice breaker for the opposing sides of the international world.Sessions closed with the tactical approach being adopted by each individual for their roles as diplomats. The improvement witnessed from the show on the previous day was proof of how when motivated, individuals from diverse cultures through a little guidance can work together for a common goal. Before debate in each committee was suspended, ZABMUN 7.5 played host to representative of US Consulate General in Karachi. They visited each committee and were given a synopsis regarding the progress of the committee on their issues. The Closing ceremony of ZABMUN 7.5 took place in the Auditorium at the SZABIST 90 Campus. The US Consulate General representatives entertained questions from the audience after which the winners were given the certificates and shields. To close the conference ZABMUN in collaboration with the students from BBA 8D entertained their guests with the soulful tunes of the Qawwal’s Farid Ayaz and Abu Muhummad at the Dastaan e Suroor. The aim of ZABMUN 7.5 was to address the decline in the debate culture on campus, in the end it was a step in the right direction one which shall be continued until we achieve our goal.
