A staggering £13,000 raised from thisyear's Kesgrave Music Festival will help

fund a nurse for six months at St ElizabethHospice.

The amount raised from the event, which washeld in August, has just been announced. It wasthe fourth year friends and family of Kate Moyeshad organised the festival in her memory and

brings the total raised for her St Elizabeth Hospice tribute fund to over £50,000.Kate died from cancer in 2005 at the Hospice. She was 29.

Debbie McCallum, who came up with the idea originally, and the committee ofdedicated fundraisers recently handed over the cheque to Hospice communityfundraiser Laura Backhouse (see picture).

Debbie, of Kesgrave, said;"We are overwhelmed by the support we have had over the four years from

businesses and the local community which allows us to make such an importantdonation to the Hospice.

"It is great that we can donate this money in the knowledge that it is directlyhelping to support the fantastic nursing care the Hospice provides."

Janice Hulett, the Hospice'scommunity and corporatefundraising manager, said: "Weare very grateful to the organisers of the music festivalfor their hard work throughoutthe year and the amazingamount they have raised tohelp patients, their carers andfamilies.

"This year's donation will helpfund a nurse in the in-patientunit for six months. The nurses play a vital role providing specialist care for painrelief and other symptoms, whilst striving to maintain the patient's wishes and dignity. This donation will really make a difference."

Around 4,500 people attended this year's festival which featured live music from22 bands on two stages at the Kesgrave Community Centre fields. The Hospice, which is based in Foxhall Road, Ipswich, costs £11 a minute to run, that's £5.9million a year.

Living with ADHD

The Devil WithinA true account of living with ADHD

If you've looked at a child supposedly suffering from ADHD(Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) and thought they justneed a firm hand read on…. 'Can't you control your child?'tells the harrowing true story of Suffolk parents who've battledagainst the odds to keep their son from harming himself andthose around him. From birth, Daniel Collins had a verysevere form of ADHD coupled with Autism and learning andspeech difficulties. This book tells what its like to be a parentof a child, with a mental illness which is still misunderstood.

Richard and his wife Rosemary have two other childrenwho've experienced first hand what its like to be shunned byfriends and family because of their brother's extraordinarybehaviour. This month Daniel turns 22, he's learnt to cope farbetter with his ADHD and he's accomplished so much morethan was ever hoped and his father has written an accountof the past 22 years since Daniels birth, not only to help todemystify this mental illness for which there are a great manyprejudices but also to celebrate a life the family scarcelydared hope for in the very beginning.

'The teenage years were the worst times of all, there weremany occasions he went missing and when I found him hewould have blood pouring from open head wounds, dueto his self harming and from assaults inflicted by others

who disliked him because he was different'

ADHD sufferers still face stigma from a large section of thecommunity, despite massive research and medical recordsof this illness dating back to the 1840's there are still thosewho bafflingly fail to recognise this as a real mental illness.

‘Can't you control your child?' is available in paperback £5.99+ £1.60 p&p ISBN 9780955483639. Available from PO Box921, Ipswich, IP1 9QF. Call 01473 658564 or email [email protected].

Quit Smoking

www.flyeronline.co.uk Please mention The Flyer when responding to advertisements6

Quit Smoking This ChristmasWith Christmas fast approachingthere are many reasons why it'sthe perfect time to give upsmoking. For forty seven year oldAndrew Rackham it was his

health which prompted him to quit. Andrew is a groundworkerfrom Ipswich and has smoked for over thirty years.

Andrew had given up once before for six years but one nightwhen he was out having a beer and someone offered him acigarette and he was hooked again. 'I wanted to give upbecause I had started to wheeze a lot in the mornings. It gotso bad I couldn't play football any more.'

It was an ad in the back of the Match Programme at anIpswich Town game that got him thinking he could quit forgood. 'It was for a special stop smoking sessions at the football ground and I just thought that's for me'.

'It was somewhere I could go every week and prove I couldgive up smoking. Andy who runs the group is very supportiveand the group is just so friendly. You feel the other blokesunderstand the problems you are going through.

'They do this CO monitoring where they can test how muchcarbon monoxide is in your lungs. When I saw the machinego red that was the kick up the backside I really needed!' 'I'm so pleased I have finally quit. The wheezing has

completely stopped and I have never felt tempted to startsmoking again even when I go for a beer after work!'

Like Andrew many people quit for health reasons but thereare lots of good reasons to quit for the festive season. Hereare just five:

Save money. If you smoke 20 cigarettes a day quittingjust two weeks before Christmas will save you a staggering£77. Just think what you could buy your loved ones with thatsort of money?

Everything smells and tastes better. Within just two days ofquitting your sense of smell and taste will improve as all thosenasty chemicals leave the body. Just think how much betteryour Christmas dinner will taste once you quit!

Keep warm! It's now no longer legal to smoke in publicspaces so no more standing around in the cold getting frostbitten fingers!

More kisses under the mistletoe! No more smoky smellingclothing and hair and fresher breath.

So this Christmas look forward to more gifts, tastier Christmasroasts, lots more kisses and smiles all round! Have a greatChristmas.

Mid Suffolk District Council launchessecond annual energy survey

On an annual basis the Department of Energy and ClimateChange asks councils to carry out a survey of energy efficiency in their area.

For the second year running, Mid Suffolk District Council is participating in this survey project with 35 other councilsacross the Eastern Region, supported by Carbon ActionNetwork - Eastern (CAN-E).

The results of the survey will be used not only to map the incidence of fuel poverty in the area, to measure progressfrom the previous year, but also to offer specific energyadvice to householders.

Julia Blackwell, chair of CAN-E says, 'Anybody returning a fullycompleted energy survey form will be entered into a draw towin one of four £300 cash prizes. One of the benefits of alarge partnership is that we are able to provide a really worthwhile prize for the prize draw at a small cost to theCouncil.'

We plan to deliver the prizes to the winners in the lead-up toChristmas, helping make a very merry Christmas for four luckyfamilies in the Eastern Region.

Councillor Roy Barker, Portfolio Holder for Environment adds:'Annually the Council makes returns to central governmentand these figures are used to show how well we are doing asa council against central government targets. It is important

that we carry out this survey and we ask all householders, nomatter whether you live in your own property or rent fromsomeone else to complete the form that you will be receiving over the next few days.'

The survey package also contains a section that allows anyone returning a form who qualifies for the national government grant scheme for energy efficiency to bepassed to Warm Front for them to carry out a free survey andbenefits check for any householder.

Warm Front local co-ordinator Gale Marriott confirms, 'we willfollow up on all people who are able to take advantage of aWarm Front grant and ask if we may carry out a free surveyand benefits check on their behalf: this service is offered inassociation with the Council. Any owner occupier or privatelyrented householder may be able to receive a grant up to£3,500 - and up to £6,000 if they are off the mains gas network - towards the cost of energy efficiency works.'

There will also be an opportunity for anyone completing aform to find out more about how they may have their homesinsulated at low cost or in some cases with grant aid by completing a section asking for more information aboutEastern CRI, a region-wide initiative developed by CAN-E forall the councils in the region

A random sample of households has been selected this yearto receive this survey, so lookout for your pack comingthrough the door in the next few days. If you wish to participate in the survey but do not receive a package, please come along to the Council Offices where they will bepleased to provide one.
